The Shiver is a great opportunity to see all the wonders of our great island park. Don't miss it!" -- from the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy Website: http://www.detroitriverfront.org/events/ ================================= No More Tuuri Race Day After 30 Years ================================== Every year at the Crim Festival of Races Expo, we notice the most colorful T-Shirts are from the Tuuri Race in late July. Those shirts are collectors items now as Michigan Runner's publisher and editor received the following note: "Hello Art and Scott, "The Hurley Foundation President, Rick Warmbold asked me to inform you that we will no longer be hosting a Tuuri Race Day. "For 31 years, Hurley Medical Center has proudly presented the Tuuri Race Day. The event was named after Flint's beloved pediatrician, the late Dr. Arthur Tuuri. His dream was to raise funds for children’s health care at Hurley while encouraging people of all ages to stay fit. Over time, the race day grew to include not only the 5K and 10K walks and runs, but also the Children’s Challenge and a One Mile Celebration Walk. The decision to discontinue the Tuuri Race Day was based on declining attendance— and, less runners and less revenue did not make this a feasible venture from a financial standpoint. We wish to tell the the Genesee County and Michigan community how difficult a process this has been for all of us. We thank you for your dedication, participation, and understanding during this time. "If you have any questions for Rick, please contact the Hurley Foundation at 810-262-9428. "Thank you, "Ilene Cantor "Director, Communications & Public Relations "Hurley Medical Center" ======================================================= Dolores Hensley Recovering from Broken Hip; Would Love Visitors ======================================================= Harrison Hensley called and said Dolores has broken her hip. ================================================================================ Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO; NEW YORK CITY; PHOENIX (Jan. 1-19, 2011) ================================================================================ Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports: It's been a busy three weeks into 2011 and life keeps moving faster all the time. Flew from Sun Valley to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for a New Year’s celebration. Running on the beach is a little better than running in the snow. With fireworks going off in the bay at midnight it was a great way to start the New Year. Running and walking on the beach is the best place to get a workout in because there are no parks and running on the road is like playing Russian roulette. It's a fantastic place at the tip of the Baja peninsula where the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez meet. Went snorkeling in the bay, horseback riding on a secluded beach an hour north of Cabo and took a zip line adventure tour at a huge canyon a long way from the beach to make it a triple delight. The adventure tour included repelling with some rock climbing. What a blast. I'm sure there are some running races but racing in Mexico is always iffy. You don't know how well the course is marked and if they're going to close the roads to traffic. Adventure travel there is great and it's as safe as most places in the USA. Have Fun in Mexico!!!! On the weekend of January 8th and 9th, I was in The Big Apple, aka New York City, and I ran the Fred Lebow 5 Mile Classic in Central Park. The race was run on Sunday January 9th instead of Saturday, January 8th because they were worried about a snowstorm that didn't happen that weekend. After the Christmas holiday snowstorm mess, the city is being overly cautious about the weather and its implications. I've run lot's of races in Central Park but what was cool about running it this time was that the Park is still covered in white from the big snowstorm at Christmas time. It's a beautiful thing to see Central Park covered in a blanket of snow. Snow gives the park a different perspective and that’s a good thing. It's like a clean white sheet. The city has returned to normal after the Christmas holidays, all the decorations are put away and everyone is ready for a vibrant 2011. The New York Road Runners have a full slate of races for the year in every borough. You don't have to wait to run the New York City Marathon to run a race here. Come to the big city and run a race and experience New York. This weekend I made my annual pilgrimage to Phoenix to run the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Half Marathon. This is my 5th time running this race and it's always a fantastic event. This was the 8th edition of this race and the entire valley and all the other cities really embrace it. Friday the expo was at the convention center. P.F. Chang’s and Brooks had some fun contests and giveaways. Expos are a great kickoff at major races as runners pickup their packets and see the sponsor’s products first hand. Gets everyone in the mood for the race. On Saturday there was the Kids Rock race where kids ran a mile at the ASU Sun Devil stadium parking lot. Over 3000 kids came and ran. World famous miler, Olympian and USATF Hall of Famer Steve Scott was there giving tips to the kids and helping them to get to the starting line. All of the kids got a medal and an experience of the joy of running a race and having fun doing it. On Sunday over 27,000 ran the half or the full marathon. Josh Cox ran an extra 5 miles to set a new American record in the 50k. Plus, he was the winner in the marathon. Congratulations Josh. The weather was perfect as it was around 50 degrees at the start and close to 70 at the finish. The marathon race starts in downtown Phoenix and goes through Phoenix, Scottsdale and finishes at Arizona State University's Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe. The half has a different course as it starts in downtown Phoenix and stays in the city and finishes at the stadium also. Both courses are mostly flat with bands and spectators along the way to make it an enjoyable experience. Lot's of cheerleaders along the way compete for who has the best cheer crowd along the course. was great. Listening to live music on a Sunday afternoon after a race in 70 degree weather can't be beat. This is one of my favorite destination races. This race is a great experience and there's lots to do in the Phoenix area as I'll tell you now. I climbed Camel Back Mountain in the center of the valley. The fantastic view of the valley can't be beat plus it's an awesome hike. Went out to Tortilla Flats, an old stage coach stop out on the Apache Trail. At the restaurant there, you can sign a dollar bill and they hang it on the wall. They say there's as many as 100,000 dollar bills on the walls. There was a country music band playing on the patio. It's like going back in time. Went on a Gold mine tour at Goldfield. It's an old gold mining town from 1893. A shoot out reenacted in the streets was hilarious. Hiked up to Flat Iron peak in the Superstition Mountains. Started at Lost Dutchman State Park which is at the base of the mountains. This is a very challenging hike but the view from the top is incredible. You can see the entire valley along with mountains all around. There's a story about the Lost Dutchman and the gold in these mountains. The view is golden. Went to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park in Superior. What a cool park with plants from around the world with fantastic trails to see them on. This is all on the Apache Trail east of Phoenix. Then I headed up to Sedona, an artist and tourist mecca because of all the red rocks and the really cool formations that they look like. The sunset by the airport there was phenomenal. Sedona has lot's of hiking trails too. Hiking is a great way to keep fit when you're not running all the time. Plus it's a time to re connect with nature. It's real-- not virtual-- like many of the things we are doing with our lives now. I've been out here for a week and there's never a shortage of things to do in Phoenix, Arizona. Still on the Road, Gary Morgan =========================================== Wayne Roberts: 30 Years, 63,916+ Miles and Counting =========================================== Reader Wayne Roberts tells us about his streak of 30 years: "I started by running on 1-1-1980 with the idea I would see how many days I could go out and not miss a day. I planned to use 3 miles as a starting point in order for the run to count. Following is what has happen since that day. 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995

Total 63,917.6 miles. If I typed them in correctly...

So I have made it 31 years without missing a day, with at least 3 miles per day. My average is 5.6389 miles per day. 171.8215 miles per months. 2061.858 miles per year. That is 11,335 days or 372 months or 3l years. It has been one great experience. Thanks for your time. Yours in Running, Wayne B. Roberts" We asked Wayne where he ran those miles. He replied: " Hi Jennie, the majority of these miles were done in the Sandusky, Mich. area. The rest of the miles are when I travel in the US and when I go to Europe. Many miles were also run in the UP of Mich. where my home was until I moved to Sandusky, Mi. 40 years ago to teach and coach. I have been retired now going on 11 years. At the present time I am in Cape Coral, Fl enjoying the warmer weather. Where ever I go I run, to do my sight seeing. Thanks, for your interest. Yours in Running, Coach Wayne B.
