Tahquamenon's frozen waterfalls together with generous snowfall create an ideal venue for snowshoe racing." Snowshoe races of 20K, 10K, and a 5K begin at 11:00 am, Sunday, February 20. It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow! December 12 - We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life. December 13 - The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor. December 14 - Snow lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. December 15 - 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer.Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all. December 16 - Ice storm this morning. Fell on my butt on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel. December 17 - Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room December 20 - Electricity's back on, but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night.. More shoveling. Took all day. Damn snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying. December 22 - Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white crap fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go F E B R U A R Y 2, 2 0 1 1 - M I C H I G A N R U N N I N G

out to shovel and then I had to poop. By the time I got undressed, pooped and dressed again, I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a snow plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy. I think the jerk is lying December 23 - Only 2 inches of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she nuts!!! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying. December 24 - 6 inches;. Snow packed so hard by snowplow, I broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a bitch who drives that snowplow I'll drag him through the snow by his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow. December 25 - Merry -bleeping- Christmas! 20 more inches of the damn slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's a fricking idiot. If I have to watch "It's A Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave. December 26 - Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves. December 27 - Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze, plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes. December 28 - Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. The wife is driving me crazy!!! January 2 - 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am? Janurary 15, - Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plow driver he is now suing me for a million dollars, not only for the beating I gave him but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his butt. The wife went home to her mother. 9 inches predicted. January 24 - I set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling. February 2 - Feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed? ================================================================================= Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - HOUSTON (JAN 27-30); PHOENIX (Jan. 20-24, 2011) ================================================================================= Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports: HOUSTON (JAN 27-30)

FEBRUARY 2, 2011
Home for 2 days and back on the road again on Thursday to Houston for the big marathon events over the weekend. Flew to Houston with Art and Jennie, the two main operators of the Michigan Runner. Without them there wouldn't be a Michigan runner. They put their heart and sole into that publication and everything that goes with it. We get into Houston and off to the Space Center there. We took a tour of the old control station, training center for the Astronauts and one of the rockets they used to send men to the moon. Our other tour consisted of a movie on the space program to the moon and then a guided tour by a former engineer-scientist who used to work there. He told us all the moon landings, the rocks from the moon and the shuttle expeditions. He was like a walking encyclopedia. There were a variety of other exhibits but the end of the day was coming and I'll have to come back next year to see everything I didn't see. We go to the Hyatt where we were staying and I go out running at Bayou Park. There's a nice 6 mile loop that goes around the park and it has a varitey of terrain with a few little hills on it. Plus, it turns into a paved riverwalk under the freeways that makes a good extension of another mile out, so it can be a solid 8 mile run. Since I've been to Houston for other running events I knew about this park, and it's good information for all of you who are coming to the Olympic Trials next year. After the run I join Larry Eder who is the head of Running Network and other compatriots of this organization for dinner at Mia Bellas. Nice italian food there. Next morning do the same run; we runners are creatures of habit. Then we all go to the Press conference with Race Director, Mayor and elite athletes. We get a few interviews and see what the schedule is for the weekend. Ryan Hall had a different appearance with a full grown beard and a laid back attitude. Two running events went on this weekend. Saturday was the USATF Half Marathon Championships for elite USA men and women. This was a preview for the Olympic Marathon trials for next year. Sunday was the 5k, half marathon, and marathon for everyone else. The rest of the day was spent in meetings with the Running Network organization on a varitey of subjects. The Running Network is a collection of about 20 different publications that, as a group, have more advertising and distribution power together. The publishing world is changing on a daily basis, and everyone is working super hard to get ahead. Saturday is here and so is the big event everyone has been waiting for, the USATF half Marathon Championship. I rode in the press truck just ahead of the women's race. It was fun riding in it and watching the race unfold. Jen Rhines, a three-time Olympian, pulled away from everyone at the 10 mile mark and won with plenty of time to spare. Katie McGregor, former Michigan standout, finshed in 4th. Mohamed Trafeh won it for the men, beating Ryan Hall by a few seconds. This is the course that they will be running the Olympic Trials on next year, and it was a chance for them to try it out. For the marathon trials they will do this course twice. The trials course is not the same course as the Houston Marathon. It was designed so that there will be more spectators on the course and to be TV friendly. Went to the expo at the convention center. It was filled with runners getting their packets and numbers. Everyone was all excited about the race. Waste Management was a major sponsor and was working with the race committee to make it a green-friendly race. Aramco, the sponsor of the half marathon, is a Saudi Arabian energy services company. This is ironic in Texas, since Chevron is the Marathon sponsor. Anything is possible. More Running Network meetings in the afternoon to finish off the day. In the evening I attended a media-VIP dinner and met the first and second race directors of the Houston Marathon. This was the 39th edition of this race, and there have been only four race directors in that time. The stories these two told me about the race were fascinating, and the communitty spirit behind this race is great. F E B R U A R Y 2, 2 0 1 1 - M I C H I G A N R U N N I N G

Sunday morning comes early for everyone with Michigan Runner as we're out there in force to get in place to film all the races. It's exciting to watch all the runners get to the start line and get pumped up by the music for the races. After the start of the 5k, half marathon and marathon, Jennie and I head over to the finish line. First to cross the finish line was the 5k winner. Then the masses started coming all morning long in a light rain that was welcomed with warm temperatures, but not the predicted thunderstorms. It was great weather for running and filming was still good. Bad weather makes fiming a rough endeavor. We were all anticipating the marathon winner and he didn't disapoint as Bekana Daba from Ethiopia set a new course record of 2:07:04, a name to remember as the London Olympics are soon approaching. The top American, finishing second, was a former Brooks-Hanson runner named Nicholas Arciniaga. He had a PR with a time of 2:11:30. Arciniaga started the race as a pacer to get the runners through the first half, and he felt good so he just kept on going. Pacing is a good thing! Stephanie Rothenstein placed third in the womens race with a PR of 2:29:35. Erin Richard from the BrooksHanson team qualified for next year's Olympic marathon trials with a time of 2:44:38. Congratulations to Erin and all the runners who ran there. It was a fun weekend, and Houston is definetely ready to host the trials next year. This is a great event, and next year you can run and watch the trials. I love going to Texas because they are so hospitable and always like to have fun. Houston, here we come for the trials! On the road with Gary Morgan ........ PHOENIX (Jan. 20-24, 2011 "I stayed an extra week out here in the valley of the sun, Phoenix. I went to the Desert Botanical Garden. Just as it states it's a garden and it was beautiful with cactus's and plants from the dessert southwest and Mexico. The Garden was started in 1939 and has grown into a phenomenal park. I went on a walk with the nature guides who showed the internal structure of the Saguaro Cactus. It's all wood inside the structure and they grow very slowly. The tall ones of 10 feet are usually 70 to 100 years old. An arm on a Saguaro cactus won't start to grow until it is 70 years old. Plants grow slowly in the desert. The park also had a garden of flowers that grow in the desert. It's amazing how much life there is in the desert with just a little bit of water. There were some great views of the mountains surrounding the valley that you could see with the telescopes provided. When in Phoenix stop by and check out this park. That evening I went to a Bikram yoga studio and did a 90 minute 105 degree yoga class. Yoga at this temperature is great for sweating out toxins and stretching out the body from head to toe. I've been doing it for the last 3 years and I love it. When I travel I just check out the yoga site and find out where they are. As all my friends know I'm a Bikram Yoga nut. Got up the next day and did a long drive on the backside of the Apache trail. I went over a mountain pass called Top of the Mountain and down into the town of Globe which has a huge copper mine. Arizona is the number 1 producer of copper in the USA. Looking for copper definitely strips down a mountain. Then I came to Roosevelt Lake Recreational Area. This is where people from Phoenix come to cool off during the summer. Over looking the lake is the Tonto National Monument which is Indian cliff dwellings from about 600 years ago. The Indians had built two villages in some over hangs. It was pretty cool to see. As I kept on driving I finally came to the Roosevelt Dam. This is one whopper dam. It was built in 1905 and added onto in 1996. The 357 feet high dam holds back the Salt River from P. 6

flooding Phoenix and provides water as a reservoir. The bridge they built in front on the dam is really cool to look at with boats in the back drop. I drove a little ways into the canyon and 4 F16 fighter jets flew overhead. The jets created a deafening roar through out the Canyon. I drove the rest of the length of the lake and back into Phoenix. You can do a lot of driving out here in Arizona. The next day I hiked up Camel Back Mountain again. There're always people hiking up this famous Phoenix landmark. Then I went across town to Scottsdale and hiked up Pinnacle peak. It doesn't go to the top of the peak but it goes around a couple Desert Botanical Garden of peaks. Still, there are great views and a good workout hiking or running here. Phoenix and Detroit have something big in common. They both like like car shows. That evening I went to a vintage car show auction. What a hoot! Men with large sums of money bidding on cars, attractive girlfriends and wives, alcohol being served and looser gun laws than other states made for an interesting evening. One car sold for 1.6 million dollars. It was a 1970 Chrysler-Dodge Cuda. Only 8 were made or left in the world. The show was entertainment at it's best. I was back in racing mode Saturday morning as I drove out to Estrella Regional Park and run-walked a 32k trail run. There were 9k, 18k, 32k, and 50k races. Aravipa Running put on the race and it was called the Cold Water Ramble. The race director is Nick Coury and he ran the 24 hour national championship race last year. Its a family-run race team with Nick's mom cooking chili and serving us food after the race. Desert trail races are tough. There were only two aid stations-- one at 6.5 miles and the other at 14 miles. There were 165 runners total, completely different than the PF Changs Marathon the week before. It was a tough course, with very rocky, hilly terrain at the beginning, washed out river beds, and lots of solitude. I loved it though. It was right up my alley as I'm walking more than running because I'm cooked from last week's half marathon. It was a sunny 60 degree day and the scenery was awesome. The race was a total desert delight and I even crossed paths with people riding horses. It was cool. If you like trail running come to Arizona and do a race here in the winter. Sunday I hadn't had enough running so I got up early and did a 4 mile fun run at Runners Den, the big running store here in Phoenix. We ran along the canals, then enjoyed a pancake breakfast. The Brooks Cavalcade of Oddities bus there doing gait analysis and giving away prizes. Brooks shoes are everywhere. It's easy to get into the Phoenix running scene as there are lots of events during the winter months. On Monday drove the dirt road section of the Apache Trail from Tortilla flats to Roosevelt dam as they finally reopened it. The 17 mile dirt road along the Salt River Canyon is listed as one of Americas most scenic roads. It was a spectacular drive although a little dusty. It felt like I was back in the West when it really was a wild place. Then I stopped to have lunch at a bar/restaurant called Jakes Corner Bar. This is an old stage coach stop and a guy comes in there who says he was prospecting in the hills. He told me, "There are all kinds of people up there prospecting for gold because its selling for $1500 an ounce." I guess the wild west is still alive. I stopped at McDowell Regional Park in Scottsdale for my last hike in another nice place. Just before I finish I walk into a fellow race walker and her son that I knew, but didn't know she lived here. I always run into people I know no matter where I go. Six degrees of separation, one out of every six people you may know. What a great way to say goodbye to Phoenix." Gary Morgan ========================= MRN on the Road, Houston ========================= We enjoyed southern hospitality and weather in the 70's last weekend during the Chevron Houston Marathon and Aramco USA Half Marathon Championships. This year the Half Marathon Championships were held on Saturday, on a different course than Sunday's half marathon. Athletes in the championships tried out the course planned for next year's U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Men's & Women's Marathon. The criterion-style course is features a number of hairpin turns, so we don't expect to see records next year. The possibility of thunderstorms was a worry for race officials on Sunday, but trouble held off and the intermittent warm rain didn't interfere with the races. Some of us from colder climates did chuckle at the "Cold Weather Alert", part of the Event Alert System Table issued to race participants, volunteers and media. In case of <50 degrees F, we are advised to "cover hands, feet and top of head". We were impressed that race director Steve Karpas pulled up plastic logo mats just before Sunday's half marathon finish. Karpas helped runners avoid the kind of slippery-mat fall that happened at the Chicago Marathon a couple of years ago. Among the highlights of the trip: a fabulous dinner at Don Shula's Steakhouse and a visit to the Johnson Space Center where we saw a Saturn 5 rocket intended for the never-flown Apollo 18 mission and heard audio tours by astronauts Alan Bean, Gene Cernan and Mark Kelly. ============================== Great Performances - Road Racing ============================== -- Chevron Houston Marathon, Houston, TX, Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011 11th) Erin Richard, 2:44:35, Olympic Trials Qualifying time 4th age group) Steve Menovcik, 2:47:31, 11th straight sub-2:50 marathon 2nd age group) John Brabbs, 2:54:35 -- USA Half Marathon Championships, Houston, TX, Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011 4th) Katie McGregor, 1:12:13 10th) Melissa White, 1:14:50 -- 3M Half Marathon, Austin, TX, Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011 2nd master, 8th female) Lori Stich, 1:22:17 -- ING Miami Half Marathon, Miami, FL, Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011 2nd) Boaz Cheboiywo, 1:07:33
