One of her athletes, Private Joseph Chirlee, was the subject of a New York Times profile when USATF rules prevented his running in the U.S.A. Cross Country Championships. In the profile, Lisa says, "He can take a bullet for us someday in Afghanistan, but he can’t run with his American contemporaries? What purpose does that serve?” http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/04/sports/04runner.html Coach Rainsberger's Website: http://traininggoals.com/ ========================================================================= Running Network TV: Chevron Houston Marathon, and USA Half Marathon Championships ========================================================================= More videos from action in Houston: USA Half Marathon Championships: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vupCnaHep8k 2011 Chevron Houston Marathon Race http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MST4HzZcUc USA Half Marathon Championships Post Race Interviews with Tony Reavis http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOCHYezxA_8 =================== Imported from Detroit =================== For those of us who have enjoyed races in Detroit: the Fifth Third Bank Turkey Trot, St. Patrick's Parade Corktown Race, the Fifth Third Bank New Year's Eve Run, the Detroit Race for the Cure and more, the Chrysler 200 Super Bowl ad with Eminem was a surprise treat. Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports: With last week's heavy snowfall and as I was shoveling snow out of my driveway, I thought to myself, I might as well enjoy this stuff so I decided to do the White Pine Stampede cross country ski race in Mancelona, Michigan. The White Pine stampede is a Michigan Classic as this was the 35th edition of this race. The 40k event is a point to point race from Mancelona High school to Shanty Creek in Bellaire. The 20k goes from Mancelona to Schuss ski resort. Plus, they have a 10k too. The 40k once was a 50k but the race had to go through too much private land, so they changed it to a 40k. Over a period of 35 years things change everywhere. When I talked to the race director, he said that the first race had 92 skiers and only 49 finished the 20k race. They only had one race back then.

Saturday morning I get up at 4am throw the skis, boots, and poles in the car and do the 3 hour I-75 drive north to Gary Morgan with Milan Biac, White Pine Stampede 40K winner. Mancelona. As I get there about an hour before the race and register, I see other skiers I used to race with over the last 25 years. My first white Pine Stampede race was in 1986 and I've done it 3 times since. The last time was in 2001. This is the first time I've done a ski race in 8 years. I knew I was going to be a little rusty-- especially doing the 40k event. I've always done the 50k so I knew what to expect out on the course and with only 144 skiers in the race it wasn't going to be crowded. The weather was great, a little cloudy and 25 degrees. I'm all excited to get my bib put on, take all my equipment to the start and get a picture. The gun goes off and the leaders take off like rockets. I stay towards the back of the pack as I know my goal today is just to finish with a decent time and enjoy skiing 25 miles through northern Michigan with a beautiful white blanket of snow. As I hit 5k, my hip flexers and back were killing me. I knew this was going to be a long race. Cross country skiing is all about technique and time on skis, something I haven't done much of in 8 years. Time to suck it up and hurt. The grooming on the trail was great. I ski through 10k and I'm finally starting to loosen up a little. I hit my split I wanted, so figured I would finish. The course had lots of hills which is a given in northern Michigan. We skied through a couple of golf courses and thick wooded forest with a stream running along side of the course. The beauty of it all can make you forget about how much you're hurting. The hills just kept on coming, up and down. I hit 35k and just kept counting down the kilometers as I keep just gliding along the snow. I fell a few times during the race and it's so hard to get up when you fall on cross country skis. Within 200 meters of the finish, I fell and the volunteers at the finish line encourged me to finish. I get back up, herring bone glide up that last hill and cross the finish line. They put a medal around my neck that has number 9315. That's how many people have done this race over the years. There are a fair amount of repeats. Not too many people have really skied this race. That's pretty cool; they keep track of all the finshers with the medals. It felt great to finish and to do it F E B R U A R Y 9, 2 0 1 1 - M I C H I G A N R U N N I N G

all these years later made it special to be in northern Michigan again. I went to the awards ceremony a couple hours later and it was fun catching up with friends who are still skiing. It was like I hadn't been away all these years. Milan Biac won the 40k. This was his 12th victory here. He's Michigan's greatest cross country skier and he's 51 years old. He's been winning cross country ski races for over 30 years-- a real testament to his training and way of life. The awards ceremony was at Shanty Creek Lodge, which is a nice place to stay for a weekend ski getaway. For all you runners out there, if you want to do something different that's a full workout try some cross country skiing. After staying in Grand Rapids for the evening. I got up early again and drove to Novi, Michigan and ran the Running Fit Super 5K. As I pulled into the Novi town center parking lot, I could see it was going to be a packed house. Runners were everywhere. Good day for running by Michigan winter standards. Lot's of Steelers and Packers jerseys were being worn by the runners. Saw Randy Step just before the race and he was all smiles as he told me he had been in Phoenix the same time I was last month. The Super 5K was a simple 5k course around the shopping center, out and back on 11 Mile Road, then finished in front of the Running fit store. Every finisher got a glass to put their favorite beverage in for the big game. There was lots of food so nobody left hungry from this race. All 1800 runners were now ready to celebrate Super Bowl Sunday, an American Tradition. I celebrated at a party thrown by a couple of Michigan favorites, Gerry and Jeannie Bocci, former National class race walkers and race directors of the Fifth Third Bank New Years Eve race on Belle Isle. They got me into race walking in the early 1980's and helped me become an Olympian. Another way to show how everyone is conected somehow: Gerry and Jeannie skied in the first White Pine Stampede race in 1976. Jeannie won it on the womens side and Gerry finished 12th. I showed them the medal and it brought back some memories of when they did that race. The party was awesome, it was great game, and the Vince Lombardi Trophy goes back to Green Bay where the Super Bowl started. Trying to stay warm, Gary Morgan
