"On Saturday, August 28, 2010 Megan Eekhoff (16), her mom, Karen Eekhoff (39), and Karen's dad, Paul Warmbier (63), all completed the fifth annual Somerset Stampede Half Marathon. What's unique about this family finish is that Megan had never ran the complete distance before, and her mom and grandfather weren't sure she could make it through the challenging 13.1 mile course in rural Hillsdale County, Michigan. The family are not strangers to the Stampede, with Paul and Karen having run in three of the halfmarathons since the race began in 2006. However, this was the first time for Megan and she was determined to finish with them. To be ready to do their best Megan and Karen, from Dexter, and Paul, from Plymouth trained on similar terrain - hilly, dirt roads with farms scattered along the way. "We practiced and got a good night's rest" said Karen "and it turned out to be a great day for running!" The Stampede traditionally is held the same day as one of the largest running events in the state, but in 2011 it will be on Saturday, August 20, a week earlier than past years. This race always draws a diverse cross section of runners. Some looking to take the 'road less traveled" and enjoy the varied terrain. Others looking to enjoy the one-on-one care and compassion a small race can offer. While some just want to see what the legendary "tough" Somerset Stampede courses are all about. Daughter, mom, and grandfather all finished the half marathon together, with Megan completing her first half at 2:08:32, Karen coming in at 2:08:37, and Paul, a veteran running with the clan finishing at 2:08:38 (yes, they let Megan finish first by design). To say half-marathoners run in the family is totally correct, and totally awesome, for the Eekhoff/Warmbier family who plan to keep coming back to the Somerset Stampede. "We love this setting and the course, it is just right for us and we always have a wonderful experience here!" -- Dave Parham ================================================= Nick Willis Heads Home to New Zealand with Changed Plans ================================================= Track and field fans in Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand were looking forward to a starstudded International Track Meet at QEII Stadium on Saturday, February 26. (http://internationaltrackmeet.co.nz/ITM/) Nick Willis would be presented with the Olympic Silver P. 2

Medal from the Beijing Olympics, Galen Rupp planned an assault on the American 10,000 meter run, Alan Webb planned to run the 800, and Alberto Salazar had planned to present a clinic. Instead, the meet has been postponed due to the Christchurch earthquake on Feb. 22 and Nick Willis and the New Zealand Olympic Committee are holding a charity track meet in Wellington, near Willis' childhood home of Lower Hutt. Funds raised will help the people of Christchurch. http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/other-sports/4693798/Nick-Willis-NZOC-plan-charity-athletics-meet On a visit to New Zealand and Christchurch in 2000, we disovered that it's not easy to reach Christchurch and the South Island from New Zealand's North Islande. Christchurch is the South Island's largest city, but it's reachable only by air or by a ferry ride of several hours from Wellington. The highlights of the trip to Christchurch were the scenic drives along the Kaikoura Coast from the ferry dock and a visit to the International Antarctic Centre. The port of Christchurch is the starting point for most Antarctic expeditions. http://www.iceberg.co.nz/ ============================================================== Playmakers Customer Appreciation Week Continues Through Sunday, Feb. 27 ============================================================== Playmakers' Appreciation Week continues through Sunday with discounts, deals and events: Wed., Feb. 23
