And while our readers should be pleased, the new format will also be welcomed by our writers and more importantly, our photographers. For those that have been with us the past 33 years, you know we started the Michigan Runner as a tabloid publication in 1979 and then a decade later began to publish it in a magazine format with glossy cover and newsprint on the inside. A recent change of printers has allowed us the opportunity to make this move and we seized it.

During the past 33 years we have have brought our readership thousands of stories in print and, starting in 1995, online. A decade ago, we initiated our Michigan Runner Television Channel and the Michigan Runner Newsletter. Eight years ago we launched two international television channels that feature running; Running Canada and the Running Network. Through our various content vehicles, Michigan runners can now follow our sport online, with weekly newsletters, timely television shows and now a beautiful magazine. Cheers, and thanks for your interest in us all these years. =============================== Michigan Runner March / April 2011 =============================== http://issuu.com/michiganrunner/docs/mr0311 In This Issue: -- 2011 Event Calendar -- Spring Shoe Review -- Editor's Notes: Broken Family, by Scott Sullivan -- Aquarium, by Rachel Steil -- Running Shorts with Scott Hubbard -- Beyond the Chip: What You Wish For, by Paul Aufdemberge -- Notes on the Run: Walking, by Daniel G. Sunny and 75 degrees in the middle of February can't be beat. This is my yearly winter trek to South Florida where I run the Miami or A1A marathon. This year I'm pacing the A1A marathon. I head to Virginia Key which is just south of downtown Miami over the Rickenbacker Causeway to checkout Biscayne Bay and do a little hill training as this is about the only hill in Miami. The view of Miami and the bay is fantastic. At 4:30 pm I'm at Miami beach and meet Raven, the legend of Miami beach. He's run on the beach everyday for 36 years and logged over 100,000 miles. Raven sees me and he calls me Pontiac because I grew up in Pontiac, went to Pontiac Central P. 4

High School, worked at Pontiac Motor division, and drive a Pontiac G6. Plus, he remembers my birthday, January, 7th. I met him 3 years ago running on the beach so I always run with him and the group when I'm in Miami. Over 800 different runners have run with him over the years and he always gives them a nickname. He remembers their names and birthdays. He also carries a sheet and records who runs with him everyday. We ran 8 miles on the beach with 10 other runners and we get done just before dark. It's always special to run on Miami Beach. Thursday and Friday I hit a Bikram yoga class to keep my flexibility and body together before running every afternoon. Bikram yoga is in a 105 degree room and we do yoga stretches for 90 minutes. It definitely helps to keep you limbered up for your daily run. Friday afternoon I drove to Fort Lauderdale for the A1A Marathon expo at a local mall. This is a relatively new marathon-- currently in it's 6th year. They get some good sponsors for a medium size marathon and half marathon. The numbers for the race have stayed around 3500 runners total, including a 5k and a kids run. With Publix, the southern supermarket store, as the main sponsor there are lots of food give aways. Saturday morning went to Biscayne National Park which is about 20 miles south of Miami by Homestead. It's mostly a marine sanctuary with 2 key islands in it. I went snorkeling at one of the reefs. It was fascinating seeing all the marine life in the reef; plus, the boat ride out was great as you see the south Florida coast. There's canoeing-kayaking along the mangrove coast and you can camp on the islands, too. There's a power plant just outside of the park boundaries and the ranger told us that he had a tour of some of the plant's cooling canal; over 400 crocodiles back in the canals are the largest concentration of crocodiles in North America. The Nature Center shows a movie on the history of this park; only by concerned citizens did it happen or it would have been an extension of Miami. This is a great park and if you have the time I would highly recommend seeing it. Marathon Sunday is here again, only a little earlier than usual as Florida races start early to beat the heat. My alarm went off at 3am. I'm up and at em for that drive to downtown Fort Lauderdale. It's a warm morning at over 60 degrees and the high was forecast to be 80 and sunny. Today I'm 4:15:00 pacer. I'm excited about pacing today. I know it's going to be tough for a lot of runners today with the heat. I pull into the parking lot and the party people are just starting to go home at 4:30 am and the runners are coming in. Two totally different lifestyles. As the runners start filling the starting area I get my pace sign and tank top with my pace time on it so the runners can stay with me if they want to run that time. We have pacers that go from 3:10 to 5:30 today. Music and lights at the start area get everyone pumped up for the 6 am start. I get close to the 10 minute per mile sign as my pace per mile is 9:43 a mile. About 10 runners get around me and ask how I plan on pacing and tell me about their marathon experiences. It's really pretty cool to be in the crowd finding out about the runners and knowing take off at 6am. I ran a half mile and could feel sweat running down my face and I knew it was going to be a long hot day. The race goes through the downtown area for the first 2 to 3 miles and then gets on the A1A road, the coastal road through south Florida. At mile 4 and and 5 we go through a park next to the road. I started out at over 10 minutes a mile so the pacees could work into the race. After mile 5 it was on the coastal road going north of Fort Lauderdale. The half marathoners turned around at 7 miles and then I had just 5 runners with me. After a turn around at mile 16 to head south to Fort Lauderdale I was down to one runner at mile 18. We ran together or she would get 50 yards ahead. With 4 miles to go we are next to the beach and it is hot with the sun shining off the beach. I'm even starting to feel a little P. 6

over heated. I was just counting down the miles. With one mile left I get along side my lone runner and she's walking. I told her we are almost done. I end up crossing the line at 4:15:02 with no runners next to me. The young lady came in at 4:16:00. She was happy because she had a 10 minute PR. The finish line was on the beach with lot's of great refreshments and entertainment. Thank goodness Publix was the sponsor as there was no shortage of drinks and food. This is a fun race to do in Febuary to get away from Michigan during the middle of winter. After I recovered a few hours later, a friend and I drove to Key West. Monday morning got up early and caught the boat to Dry Tortugas National Park. It's a 70 mile due east trip from Key West. This is a very special place. Back in the mid 1800's the US Government built a huge brick fort out on this key island to protect the gulf shipping lanes. Fort Jefferson is a six-sided building that took 16 million bricks to build. It's the largest brick building in North America. There's a lot of history here. There's also a lot of nature here, too-- lot's of birds, sea turtles and exotic fish. I went snorkeling in the crystal blue waters outside the fort. It was spectacular. This is a long way from anywhere and it's pristine. If you ever get a chance to visit here, do it because it's a place like no other. I was only there for 5 hours but I'll remember it for some time. We hopped back on the boat for the 2 and a half hour ride back to Key West. Then saw the sunset and drove back to Miami. It was a whirlwind trip but it was cool. If you want to have a special trip come to south Florida and enjoy all it has to offer. See Ya, Gary Morgan"

====================================================== Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - ALBUQUERQUE (Feb 25-28) ====================================================== Friday morning I get up and there's another snow storm here in Detroit. Luckily I make it to the airport and my flight takes off for Albuquerque, New Mexico, the site of the USA Track & Field Indoor Championships. I was there for some meeting swith Athlete Advisory CCommittee (AAC) and to do some filming for Michigan Runner. This is the second year the Championships have been held here and the athletes seem to like it here. I get off the plane and it's a nice sunny 65 degree day here. I go out for a run around the city. Some nice running paths along the Rio Grande River connect with other paths throughout the city. I meet up with my track and field friends for our AAC meeting and I call it an early night because I was going to Roswell to run a half marathon. Next I would check out the Alien capital of the world. 4 am on a Saturday morning comes early and I had a 200 mile drive ahead of me. As the sun starts coming up and the rays are beaming off the mountains are a beautiful sight. I love driving out here in the American West because the scenery is just spectacular and it never gets old. I started a little late out of Albuquerque, so I knew I was going to be late. I called the race director and he said, "That's ok. Just start your watch and let me know your time." I get there and register. It's only $20 to run and a cool long sleeve tee shirt is included. Put on my number and I start the race 20 minutes late. When you drive long distances to races and you aren't sure of where you're going early in the morning sometimes you can take the wrong way. I started my watch at the so called starting line on the bike path and I was told just follow it you'll catch some runners. There was only 35-40 runners in the race. The bike path lasted for about 2 miles then we just ran along side of the road. When I started catching some runners and walkers about 3 miles into the race I did'nt feel so lonely. At 3 miles we turned onto the highway and ran alongside trucks for the next 3.5 mies each way. It was basically an out and back course. It was interesting running in the Roswell country side, I saw a large pecan farm but no aliens. At the 6.55 mile turn around, there was an aid station-- only the second one. (The first one was at 2.5 miles.) For the whole 13 miles there were 3 aid stations. It was like running a race back in the 1980's. You sucked it up and made it hurt. There was a strong head wind coming back but I felt better coming back than going out because I finally got my legs going after the long drive. I see the finish line and pick it up just a little to get accross the line. They handed out nice awards and raffle prizes. There was over 200 runners and walkers in all the events, including a 10k and 2 mile with run and walk divisions in both races. This was the 30th edition of this race, officially named the Roawell Stampede. Race Director Bob Edwards loves to have out-oftowners come and run. Another example of how small the world is: I walked into a race walker that I gave a ride to the Kingsprot, Tennessee airport after a National Race Walk Championship 12 years ago.

She lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. There's only 6 degrees of seperation between all of us. Since I was in Roswell, and this is the Alien Capital of the World, I had to go to the UFO Museum and Reseach center. Truthfully, it was a very interesting and fun place to go. All over town there are lots of little blowup aliens like Randy Step has in his Martian races. Roswell is in the middle of nowhere but if you're not too far away, come and visit the Alien Capital of the world. I drove back to Albuquerque and went to the USATF Championships at the convention center. I got back in time to see a couple of Masters events-- a prelude to the Masters Championships going on this week. The two big events Saturday night were the men's and women's 3000 meter runs. Jennie Simpson outdueled Sara Hall for the women and Bernard Lagat turned on his super kick to pull away from Galan Rupp. There were lots of other events and more to come on Sunday. Sunday's track meet had some super performances: American records in the women's Shot Put by Jillian Cameron and in the Pole Vault by Jenn Suhr. Mike Rodgers won the 60 meter dash and the $25,000 Visa Championship for the most points in the indoor series. Jenn Suhr won it for the women. It was an exciting track meet to watch and do some interviews with athletes for the Michigan Runner. It's going to be a great year as athletes are getting ready for the World Championships in Korea. Albuquerque and New Mexico have some awesome scenery, great parks, interesting culture and lot's of recreational activities. I've been here many times and it's always fun to come back. A summer vacation would be a home run. I'm staying out here in the wild west to visit some of our fantastic National Parks and find some fun races to do. Love to be on the open road, Gary Morgan
