Doug Goodhue will receive the Male Master Road Runner of the Year. The ceremony will be on May 14, 2011 in Fredericksburg, Virginia as part of the RRCA Convention; Doug and his wife Cindy will be on hand for the ceremony. We previously announced that Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, has been named RRCA's "Outstanding State Representative fo 2010. According to RRCA, "The Male and Female Master will be chosen by the selection panel and their criteria includes top performances and accomplishments during the year for a person over 40 years of age. The types of races run and placement in those events is also an important criteria. Participation in RRCA Championship events is encouraged as well as participation in the local running community by being involved with a local club, youth program, or coaching new runners." Previous recipients include Bill Rodgers, Doug Kurtis, Craig Young, and Dennis Simonitis. See the complete list: http://www.rrcahistory.org/rrcahistory/rrcaawardwinners.html. Doug participates in the Michigan running community in many ways; he directs the John Rogucki Memorial Kensington Challenge in Milford each September and he's busy now with the USATF 10K Masters National Championship at the Dexter-Ann Arbor Run on June 5. Ed's 3:25:43 lowered the previous world record by 13 minutes. ================================================================================ Running Fit, Kalamazoo, Rite Aid Clevelad and Mississauga Marathons Provide Great Variety This Spring, by Art McCafferty ================================================================================ For those who have been training for their spring marathon this past winter and early spring, there are four of special note. May 1 -Running Fit Trail Marathon is not only a marathon but a bona fide adventure. The mind of Randy Step when he puts together an event is over the top in cleverness. May 8 -Kalamazoo Marathon, is new, but it is run by those folks from Borgess, who have been providing great running experiences for decades. May 15 -The Rite Aide Cleveland Marathon is a nationally known event that showcases great race management along with a course with enough course eye candy to fatten your eyeballs. We have been videotaping the race for the past five years and can attest to its overall quality. Finally, the Mississauga Marathon (May 15), run in a Toronto suburb, is also a delight to run. Crossing the U.S./Canada border is not as time consuming as it has been in the past and well worth the time spent. The race has been a benefit program for the American Cancer Society Leelanau County unit. Over the years the entire race fees have gone to The Cancer Society which conservatively amounts to over $70,000. Scott Walker and Kent Van Emst will be the new co-race directors . Scott and Kent have been active in this event during the last few years and are looking forword to keeping the event one of the highlights of the Northport summer activities." -- Runfor Funds News Release Of course, we have a video of this wonderful 4th of July race: http://michiganrunner.tv/2009northport/ P. 4

We met Chris at the sunrise meeting of the Grosse Pointe Rotary a month or so ago. The Grosse Pointe Rotary has been putting on the Grosse Pointe Run for over 30 years and has one of Michigan's great courses. The beautiful Lake Huron coastline that frames the various Pointe communities, was used in Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino" film. Here was our lead in the 1992 MR. 19th Annual Grosse Pointe Run by Art & Jennie McCafferty "Leaden skies that were clearing for a fast approaching cold front, greeted the over 600 hundred runners who showed up for the 19th Annual Grosse Pointe Run. Well... annual might be streching it a tad. The run did not occur last year, but Chris Flynn and Steve Basile of the Sunrise Rotary club, picked it up, dusted it off and started it all over again. Thanks, fellas. " As you can see, Tug - No - More, co-creator, Chris Flynn has been running for a long time. You will meet Chris and other Grosse Pointe Rotarians this September, when The Running Network Television Channel and Michigan Runner Television cover this storied event. ===================== Adv. ===================

-- Fort Lauderdale
It's been a busy three weeks and three different destinations. America is such a fantastic place as there are so many different places to go to do different things. I was doing something different on every one of these trips, as the adventure continues. I went to Fort Lauderdale to crew a Toni Robbins seminar. I've been to a few of his seminars so it was going to be interesting to volunteer at one of them. I came in a day early and did a long hike up the A1A highway. I have lots of experience on this road as I have run the marathon here as a pacer 4 times. Since it was spring break there was lots of scenery on the beach to keep my eye balls busy and to forget about the 80 plus degree temperatures as I was walking. I remember my spring break days here on the beach back in 1982. It's different world as the retirees are Gary Morgan finds a leprechaun at the Shamrock Shuffle post race party. on the beach with the college kids now. It's a lot more crowded too. A neat place to visit here is the Swimming Hall of Fame. I visited a few years ago and the Hall has history for the swimmer and non-swimmer alike. A lot of National meets are held at the pools here. The Hall is must-do if you visit Fort Lauderdale. I started volunteering the next day and I'm doing a variety of things. The seminar was held at the convention center at the port where the cruise ships dock and load up passengers. Every time we went in the convention center we had to show our ID. It was like crossing the border. The coolest thing we do at this seminar is walk on fire, which really is walking on hot coals. It was done at night and 3000 people walked on the hot coals. It was awesome. A cruise ship had just docked and some of the passengers got a great show of all of us walking on Fire! The rest of the weekend was about healthy living, setting goals and living your dreams-- kind of like running marathons. Ran every day I was there and around the pleasure boat area, not the best area to run but it was a workout. The one thing about running in Florida is you are going to sweat out a lot of water every workout. It does help to get you fit. It was a fun weekend that gets me doing something a little different. On to my next destination. -- New York City
On to my next destination, New York (The Big Apple) for AAC-USOC meetings. I got there on Friday morning and I went to outreach event at a local organization called America Scores which combines soccer with poetry writing. A boys and girls team is put together and they play local soccer teams. We went to a school in Harlem and talked to the girls team. The girls read us some of the poetry they had written. These were girls 10-11 years old and the poetry was very good. The program was started to help at-risk kids who liked soccer and poetry writing. Great idea to help them to do this instead of getting into trouble. During two days of meetings we discussed athletes' rights, programs for elite athletes, and helping with a childhood obesity program. We listened to CEO Scott Blackman give us the state of the USOC (United

States Olympic Committee. Saturday evening we went to The New York Athletic Club for a program by a group called Right To Play which helps children, especially young girls, have a chance to play sports in third world nations. In the USA playing sports is a choice for us but in other countries economics and culture prevent people from playing sports. It's a great organization started by the great Norwegian skater Olan Kloss after the 1994 Olympics. I stayed a couple of extra days in New York and ran around Central Park every day. It's such a cool place. I got caught in a rain storm and as I was running north towards Harlem and a cold front came in with rain. It was really cool to see the rain hitting the lake and I thought, "This is why I'm outside every day doing something so I can see and feel nature change right in front of me." There's nothing like it even when you're in the middle of the Big Apple. -- Chicago
This weekend I was in Chicago for the Shamrock Shuffle 8k. Did the usual 5 hour drive early Saturday morning. I got to the expo at Navy Pier around 11 am because I was volunteering at bib-number pickup. It was interesting doing this as there was no packet-- just a number stapled to a hard piece of paper. The number had a D tag on it. In order for the runners to pick it up the had to give us the email confirmation or get one from the computer print out volunteers next to us. Then we had to put them in the box when we gave out the numbers. I guess they can keep track of it better. I worked there for three hours then got my number and checked out the expo. Expo's are always fun and an interesting place to hang out. There was a variety of charity booths, food displays, future races, and merchandise for sale. Guest speakers were over by the time I got to the stage area. I interviewed runners and race directors. The Navy Pier is a fun and interesting place as it goes almost 3/4 of a mile out into Lake Michigan. The

Pier has a theater, cinema, Ferris wheel, botanical garden, ballroom, one of the largest stained glass museums in the world, and a variety of shops. Great views of the Chicago skyline and Lake Michigan are in front of you. I've been there many times and I never get bored. I headed for the hotel, got some dinner, checked out the city for a bit and called it a night. Race morning doesn't come as early here as the race started at 9 am. Got up at 7 am excited about running today because it was going to be an 80 degree, sunny Start: Shamrock Shuffle 8K, Chicago day, a great recipe for a short race and a party. With 40,000 runners, it was going to be a big party. This is billed as the world's largest 8k race. The race starts and finishes in Grant Park-- the same as the Marathon start and finish. Runners were all over the place like the marathon. This race used to be held around March 20Th but the last few years the weather has been horrible, so they moved it back two weeks into April,a wise choice. I drop off my bag and head into the A corral. I don't know how I got put into the A corral, maybe because I pace the marathon. Everyday and every race is different. I've been racing forever and I don't try to understand how they place runners. I'm here to have fun. They play the National Anthem with a celebrity singer and the gun goes off. We run up Columbus drive and follow the marathon route the first two miles then we head back towards Grant Park. 8k goes by pretty quickly when you're used to marathons. It was awesome just like the marathon with lots of spectators, huge water stops, and a beautiful sunny day. We come to the 4.5 mile mark on Michigan Avenue, turn up Roosevelt and the dreaded uphill, take a quick left and downhill on Columbus to the finish line. What an awesome race and I'm not beat up like the marathon. That's the difference. This is a totally different crowd than the marathon. These are the fun runners, not the serious marathon type. Everyone is smiling after they finish. Party time is at Buckingham Fountain. Just one thing was missing, the fountain wasn't turned on yet. After drinking a couple of beers and listening to the band play. I pulled out the video cam and got some interviews with runners who dressed up in costumes and were having fun. This is the 5th time I've run this race and it doesn't disappoint me. It's one of my favorite races and it kicks off the Chicago running season. Come run this race and have a blast doing it. You can do some sightseeing here in the windy city where this is always something going on around town. Headed to Boston for the Grand Daddy of them all, the Boston Marathon. -- On the Road, Gary Morgan
