===================================================== Running Network TV: Master Runner of the Year: Doug Goodhue ===================================================== Milford's Doug Goodhue took the Master's Runner of the Year award at last week's RRCA Convention. Gary Morgan records the interview. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXhw2SNDehQ ==================================================== ING New York City Marathon named Sports Event of the Year ==================================================== The ING New York City Marathon 2010 took top honors at the Sports Business Awards in New York Wednesday, May 18, as the New York Road Runners’ premier event was named the Sports Event of the Year. The ING NYC Marathon 2010 was chosen from a stellar list of nominees including the 2011 NBA All-Star game, the 2010 NCAA Final Four, and the 2011 Winter X Games. Presented by Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily, the awards recognize the best events, leagues, teams, agencies, and individuals from across the sports industry. The prestigious Sports Event of the Year award, which honors “best-in-class entertainment, improving market and brand strength, generating new revenue and growth, and initiating projects that give back to the community,” has been given to the Super Bowl and NHL Winter Classic in past years. The 2010 ING New York City Marathon broke numerous records, including its 45,000 runners, the $340 million it generated for the City of New York, and the $30 million it raised for 191 charities ($24.3 million of which went to organizations based in New York City). -- New York Road Runners News Release ======================================================================== Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - Fargo, North Dakota and Beyond (May 20-25, 2011) ======================================================================== Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports: Fargo and Beyond On Friday, I flew to Minneapolis then drove 250 miles to Fargo, North Dakota. As they say, “How far will you go to Fargo?” It’s a long way from anywhere. The expo was at the Fargo Dome, a 25,000 seat covered stadium where the North Dakota State University Bison play football. It was a great place for the expo and is also where all the races on Saturday finish. I went to a 50 State Marathon Club meeting and they were handing out awards for runners who had run marathons in every state. It was fun to watch and they are a very passionate group. At 6 pm they had a 5K with over 6000 runners. Runners just kept on coming. It was amazing they had that many runners. From there I went to the pasta dinner. The guest speaker was Matt Long, a New York City Fireman who was run over by a bus. He was given a one percent chance to live. Before this he was an accomplished 3:13 marathoner and triathlete. He had 42 surgeries and recovered to finish an Ironman race again. Matt gave a very inspirational speech and is an inspiring individual. The marathon start was 7:30 am Central time-- a good start since all I had to do was walk a block to get there. I stayed at the college dorms for the night which was part of the deal of being a pacer. The 10K runners took off at 7 am and there were over 6,000 of them. The playing of the USA National P. 4

Anthem was cool. A Canadian performer sang the Canadian National Anthem, then one of the local rock musicians played the USA National Anthem on his guitar. The gun went off and I was pacing the 4:45 runners today. I was going to have plenty of time to get to know my fellow runners. The course was flat; other than two bridges and underpasses there isn’t a hill in Fargo. Certain spots were smelly and slippery from flooding of the Red River. What impressed me about this race was all the crowd support. For a city of only 100,000 residents, there were lots of bands, DJ’s playing music, and spectators cheering us on and offering us an occasional beer. The race went by pretty fast with all that going on. The big storm that was supposed to hit the city didn’t happen so it just stayed cloudy and about 60 degrees-- great running weather. Finishing in the Dome was great. I felt a little lonely as I finished because all the runners that started with me disappeared at the 18 to 20 mile mark. As I keep pacing races I’m getting fewer people finishing with me. I’m sure that most of these runners are not training enough. It’s tough to run marathons on 20 and 30 mile weeks. Plus, when you are running slower times, the human body is making a lot of adjustments to be out there that long. Post-race food was fantastic with pizza, fruit, cookies and drinks. You didn’t leave hungry. After the race I went to Scheels, the sporting goods store that sponsored the race. It was a phenomenal place with a ferris wheel inside the store, US president figures with accompanying history, and every type of outdoor gear for anything you liked doing outside. I had a fun time stopping in Scheels. The post race concert was at the fairgrounds that evening. In the true spirit of North Dakota, the concert was held inside the coliseum where they have rodeos on a dirt floor. The coliseum required a major cleanup, because it was the first time a concert had been held there. The concert was held inside because they were worried about the storms that were headed towards Fargo. It was an awesome concert; a band called Hairball played 1980’s music and they were great. The concert topped off an incredible race weekend in Fargo. Over 19,000 runners participated in all the events including a 5k, 10k, marathon relay, half and full marathon. If you ever want to run a marathon in North Dakota, run Fargo-- even though it’s far to go. Sunday I headed West on I94 to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The park is named for Theodore Roosevelt because he spent his younger years ranching and hunting there. Roosevelt said living in North Dakota gave him the life skills to become president. The area is called the Badlands because of the different colored rock formations. It was a 300 mile drive there. As I drove the 300 miles there I saw lots of flooded farmland and the two sections of I 94 which had to be closed the previous week because of flooding. I couldn’t believe it because it’s usually bone dry out there. When I got to the park in late afternoon it raining off and on. The drive through the park is 36 miles. I stopped for a quick half-mile hike and saw a small canyon, but it was muddy. I was planning on camping for the night, but with the Little Missouri River about ready to flood and the rain I decided no camping. I saw buffalo, wild horses, mule deer, and prairie dogs. When the sun did come out the different colored rocks really stood out. It was a nice park and I’m sure better weather would have made it a much better place to visit. The town of Madora right outside of the park was kind of dead. They told me this tourist town comes to life Memorial Day weekend and keeps on going all the way through September. So really I came a week too early. Rain and storms are just a part of nature, a part of the Earth’s ever changing ways. I drive back to the capital city, Bismark, that evening and stay in a hotel where it’s dry and warm. Monday morning I drive over to the capitol building and take a tour. The capitol is an 18 story straight up building with two winged sections which was built in 1931 for 2 million dollars. That was cheap even during the depression. Inside it’s beautiful with marble from New Hampshere, Montana, and Belguim, From the 18th story you can see for 30 miles on a clear day. On the ground floor the Theodore Roosevelt wall honors famous and distinguished people from North Dakota. The people from North P. 6

Dakota are very proud of this capitol building. I also visited the excellent Heritage Museum which features North Dakota history from prehistoric times to the present. If you ever go to North Dakota, visit Fargo, Bismark and the National Park because they are impressive for a state you think of only having wheat fields and a long winter. Its 2pm and I start my 450 mile drive to International Falls, Minnesota. the self proclaimed Ice Box of the Lower 48 and the gateway to Voyaguers National Park. It’s a long drive as I go through Fargo, over the Red River, then stop at the Minnesota Visitors Center and get some travel information. An hour and a half later I come to Detroit Lakes. I stop and take a picture of the “Welcome” sign because as I remember Dick Beardsley lives here. Doug Kurtis told me he did a race here. With all that running stuff behind it and having Detroit in it, I thought it would be cool to take a picture. I keep on driving and I go by the Misissippi River Head Waters Park where the river actually starts. I didn’t see a sign so I went by it. I found this out about 50 miles up the road. If you are ever up that way, the Head Waters Park is by the town of Bemidji. I finally get to the city of International Falls, Minnesota, the top of the lower 48 and at the MinnesotaCanadian border. With a population of just over 6,000, it’s not bursting at the seams. The paper mill is the main gig in town. I check into my hotel. The hotel owners tell me about the winter ultra race. The Arrowhead 135 Winter Ultra Marathon is held during the middle of winter; some Brazilians have stayed at the hotel for the race. The hotel owners didn’t know the name of it. Any of you who want extreme adventure can check out that one. Border crossing here is one of the toughest in North America, especially on the American side, because this is the training site for all the new border crossing police. You can find out a lot talking to the locals when you go places. I finally called it a night. Tuesday morning, I’m finally going to Voyageurs National Park. I heard about this place when I was in Boy Scouts back in 1974. Some of the scouts I knew went to Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness which is a canoe mecca right next to Voyageurs and is part of the US Forest Service. Voyageurs became a National Park in 1971. It’s named for the hunters, trappers and beaver fur traders who opened up exploration of the rest of America. Voyageurs is a chain of lakes that eventually lead into Lake Superior. This park has more water area than land. I go to the brand new headquarters and get a map of the park and information about the area, check out the Rainy Lake Visitor Center and see a movie about the park. That’s how I learn about the park. I do a short hike there and hit another visitor center. Then I go to the rustic part of the park called Ash River. I have finally found the peacefulness of this place. As I look out over the lakes I don’t hear anything but an occasional loon. I go on a three mile hike that has a fantastic overlook and the sun came out. What a view! At this time of year you’re beating the mosquito rush. The park was pretty empty. This weekend will get busy because of Memorial Day. It was great coming here and seeing this awesome park. It’s a long way from anywhere; that’s why not a lot of people are here but if you decide to come here you won’t be disappointed. I get on the road and drive 130 miles to Duluth, home of Grandmas Marathon, iron ore and wheat exports. Duluth is the last stop on the Great Lakes shipping channel-- over 3200 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. It’s also a place where I did some cross country ski training with a Russian family here 15 years ago. I still keep in touch with even though I haven’t seen them in years. Get there about 10 pm and call it a night. Next morning takes me a bit to get going. I head into town, get on Skyline drive which is 600 feet above the city and find the park called Chester Bowl. This is where I did the cross country ski training 15 years ago. I started hiking the ski trails in the park and it was great. I climbed some old ski jumping hills that aren’t used anymore and got a fantastic view of the city. This city is filled with trails and I followed one along a river all the way to Lake Superior, then walked along the lake front path. It

was awesome. Eventually I get back to my car and call my Russian friends. One of them tells me about a 5K at the park where I had been hiking. This was a cross country race on the ski trails, so I knew what to expect. Here’s the great thing about it: it was a dollar to race. No numbers or awards-- just cookies and soda afterwards. It was a riot. 126 runners ran and it was part of a series they have in the spring and the fall. The Northland Runners put it on. My hats off to them. After the race I drove some of Skyline drive and took pictures of Duluth and the regatta in the Bay. We met for dinner and my friend offered a place to sleep on his couch. I accepted and called it a night after writing my article for Michigan Runner. --Still on the road in Duluth Minnesota-- a beautiful city, and a great outdoor sports haven that you can visit at any time of the year.
