Herb Squires? by Art McCafferty ================================================================= "Emily and Pooh and Detroit Too" was one of the slogans for one of Michigan's most electric couples, Emily Gail and Herb Squires who put on some mega races in the late 70's and early 80's in Detroit. They rubbed elbows with the city's VIPs and enjoyed some serious power with their tag line, "Say Something Nice About Detroit". "They also participated in a "Lap Around America", did a film with Charlie Blanchard of Total Runner about their "Death Valley Run", and headed up the triathlon movement with their participation in the Ironman. "They left town in the mid 80's, Emily to work with the Ironman Triathlon folks and to also get her golf game back. She now has her own golf radio show in Hawaii: http://emilygail.point2agent.com/Emilys_Talk_Radio/page_1924536.html. I met her on a couple of occasions, once about eight years ago, when she was trying to catch on with the Futures Tour at a tournament in Milford and two years ago at the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills. "Both Herb and Emily were together in Hawaii, but gradually separated due to their careers going in different directions. Herb became a movie producer; "Race the Sun" and film and other promotional events sent him around the world for a number of years. He is now in California and was a recent victim of one of those horrid brush fires that are so prevalent in California. In escaping the fire, he injured his back and is now in treatment.

"Herb has led a pretty exciting life and there is a company that would like to develop a movie that chronicled his exploits. Squires called me to see if I could send him some information about his life in Detroit, as he lost all his memorabilia in the fire. I pulled out some back issues of the MR, going back to 1979 and 1980 and sent him some of his Detroit memories. "Race the Sun http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117427/ Plot Summary for, Race the Sun (1996) A bunch of high school misfits in Hawaii, introduced by their new teacher, attend a science fair in which they draw up inspiration to build their own solar car and win a trip to compete in the 1990 World Solar Challenge in Australia. "Note: There had been some talk and even an article in MR that indicated that Herb Squires was expelled from the states for some questionable business practices. He indicated that it was all a misunderstanding and that he has his green card." ========================================================== E2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitness: Building Muscles ========================================================== Are you looking for ways to increase your muscle mass? A diet moderate in protein will help, but scientific research shows that a high protein diet will not build bigger muscles. While muscles are made of protein, eating more than you need of this nutrient will not result in greater muscle growth. How much daily protein do I need? The American Dietetic Association and the American College of Sports Medicine recommend 0.5-0.8 grams protein/pound body weight. For example, a 160 pound male should consume 80 – 128 grams of protein/day (160 x 0.5-0.8). Ultra endurance athletes who compete for several hours or on consecutive days should maintain a protein intake at the higher end of the range, or slightly above. Most protein requirements can be met through real food and beverages. Athletes should make sure that they maintain an adequate calorie intake as well so that protein can be used for muscle repair and growth instead of being siphoned off and used as energy.

sSample 100 gram Protein Menu Breakfast: 6 ounces orange juice, 1 cup whole grain cereal (4) 1 cup milk (8), 1 banana OR 1 egg, 1 ounce cheese omelet (13). Midmorning Snack: 1 ounce low-fat cheese (7), 6 crackers. Lunch: 1 sandwich with 3 ounces meat (21), 1.5 cups salad (3) with 1/8 cup seeds (4), 1 cup low-fat milk (8), 1 cup melon. Midafternoon Snack: 1.5 ounces nuts (12) Dinner: 1 cup long grain rice (3), 3 ounces chicken or seafood (21), 1 cup stir fry vegetables (4), 1 cup berries. Evening Snack: Yogurt smoothie with fresh fruit (8) Bottomline: Athletes do need more protein than non athletes, yet excessive amounts get turned into fat if your calorie intake for the day exceeds the energy you’ve burned. Get strong and improve your performance by growing muscles through good nutrition, progressive training and adequate rest. Plus two more days of the European Championships. ============================================================================ Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - BARCELONA, SPAIN (August 1, 2010) - European T & F Championships, Days 5 & 6 ============================================================================ Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports: Another early start for me as I got up early and headed for the womens marathon. The women started out slow because of the heat and did a negative split. Zivile Balciunaite from LLithuaniawas the winner with a time of 2:31:14. Great race considering the heat. In the afternoon I participated in the Media race of 800 meters. there was about 50 runners and we had 6 heats of 8 people in each heat. It was like a real race. Andreas Thorkildsen from Norway won the gold medal in the Javelin. To round out the evening performances Jessica Ennis From Great Britain won the gold in the Heptathlon. Up and at them again this morning as I headed off to the mens Marathon. Victor Rothlin from Switzerland won gold in a time of 2:15:32 on a hot sticky day here in Barcelona. Jose Manuel from Spain took silver to the delight of the hometown crowd. Dmitrity Safronov from Russia picked up the Bronze. There was a huge crowd watching this race all along the 10k course. The runners repeated it four times plus the one kilometer walk course twice. Got to see from a few different view points. Marathon Sunday in any city is always a festive occasion and Barcelona delivered. In the afternoon I went to the International Press association(AIPS)-Helsinki 2012 Championship Conference. This was to promote Helsinki, which is hosting the 2012 European Championships Plus AIPS which is associated with Laureus. A charity driven sports organization to help promote sports with children around the globe. Olympic and professional athletes are the driving force behind it. Sabastian Coe Olympic 800 meter gold medalist was one of the guest speakers. It was a great experience being there. I´m getting ready to come back to the USA. I´ll miss the last evening session. This was an incredible event. Well beyond my expectations and Barcelona is a dream city. Good bye to the European Championships. =================================================== MRN on The Road: Dowagiac, Marshall, Sylvania, Ohio =================================================== DOWAGIAC (July 31) - Among the many reasons we look forward to Steve's Run is the chance to renew acquaintances and to make some new friends. Last year we met Adele Pitt, who comes to Dowagiac from Cudahy, Wisconsin. Adele followed up our recommendation and joined Kathy Loper's tour to run the Great Wall Half Marathon in China this last May. Adele, who running a half-marathon every month, compared notes with Melissa Bergeron, who is in the process of running a marathon every month. Melissa had a plenty of speed left after her marathon win at Carrollton earlier in the week. Another reason is dinner at the fabulous Woodfire Grill. MARSHALL (July 31) - Marshall's Riverwalk along the Kalamazoo River could win the prize for "Best Riverwalk". Marshall was on our route from Dowagiac to Ypsilanti, so we decided to check out the state of the Kalamazoo River. We discovered the beautiful Riverwalk, a bit upstream from the oil spill. If you enjoy Victorian architecture, Marshall is the place to see. We also stopped for dinner at the renowned Schuler's Restaurant, currently celebrating their 100th anniversary. SYLVANNIA, OH (August 1) - Jim and Joyce Donaldson and their Elite Endeavors staff put on triathlons and duathlons that are all about fun. The Women's Only Triathlon and Dri-Tri took us to a new place, Centennial Terrace and Quarry. Triathletes swam a 400 yard loop with a time-trial start. The Quarry averages 22 ft. deep and features several diving platforms and a sandy beach. For those of us who regret the city ordiances prohibiting diving boards, this is a wonderful find. A large group of athletes, perhaps 30, sported matching Runnin' Gear apparel. Runnin' Gear held successful triathlon clinics and has stores in Waterford, Brighton, and Rochester Hills. We also appreciate Runnin' Gear's support of high school athletes competing in national meets.

================================================================== NSGA Research Newsletter: Competitive Events Attract Trail Runners ================================================================== "An estimated 2.2% of the 4.8 million Americans who participated in trail running in 2009 competed in events, according to The Outdoor Foundation recently released Special Report on Trail Running 2010. The report, published in partnership with Montrail, estimates that 105,600 people participated in competitive trail running events in 2009. "On average, this group competed 15.4 days per year in 2008. In 2009, 60% had participated in a Fun Run, 52% in a 5K, 23% in a 10K, 18% in a half-marathon, 17% in other events and 8% in a marathon. "The Foundation took another look at Trail Running in early 2010. In the 2010 survey, 98% of trail runners participate in another outdoor activity. Among those surveyed, 52% said they participated in day hiking, 51% said they participated in cycling, 44% said they participated in car, backyard or RV camping, 31% in paddling and 25% in climbing. "While participation in the sport dipped slightly in 2009, it is still hovering just below 5 million, or up nearly 17% since 2006. Slightly more than 13% of participants tried trail running for the first time in 2009. "The South Atlantic is home to 24% of the nation's trail runners, by far the largest share of any of nine regions included in the report." http://www.nsga.org. ==================================================================== Michigan Runner Race Series Results: Steve's Run 10K, July 31, 2010 ==================================================================== Open Women Melissa Bergeron, 1st, 42:59, 30 points, (+15 points master), age 45 Peggy Zeeb, 2nd, 44:19, 20 points (+10 master +3 senior), age 52 Madie Rodts, 3rd, 44:49, 10 points, age 18 Open Men Adam Dohm, 1st, 33:38, 30 points, age 27 Eric Green, 2nd, 34:51, 20 points (+15 points master), age 42 Joseph Billian, 3rd, 35:06, 10 points, age 18 Masters Women Melissa Bergeron, 1st, 42:59, 15 points, (+30 points open), age 45 Peggy Zeeb, 2nd, 44:19, 10 points (+20 open +3 senior), age 52 Kelly DeBaar, 3rd, 44:52, 5 points, age 40 Masters Men Eric Green, 1st, 34:51, 15 points (+20 points open), age 42 J.C.
