======================================== Michigan Runner TV: Heart of the Hills ======================================== Heart of the Hills in Bloomfield features a delightful course through neighborhoods and a nature trail, then finishes on the Andover High School track. Carter Sherline was there to catch the action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cT48FzGu96w ========================================================= Bette Wade Leads Team USA to Thorpe Cup Heptathlon Sweep =============== ========================================= INDIANAPOLIS - Returning for revenge over Team Germany's three-consecutive wins, Bettie Wade led Team USA in the women's heptathlon to a sweeping victory at the annual Thorpe Cup combined events challenge, held in Marburg, Germany, August 7-8. Added to the Thorpe Cup challenge in 2006, the heptathlon event has seen victory by Team Germany three times in four outings. But led by Bettie Wade's performance of 5,984 points, Team USA swept all three scoring positions to end Germany's winning streak this year. Finishing second and third respectively were UCLA's Ryann Krais, with a lifetime best of 5,779 points, and former West Virginia stand-out Abbie Stechschulte, also with a lifetime best, finishing with 5,755 points. Other American women competing in Germany were Emily Pearson (5,611) and Kasey Hill (5,514). Winning the individual competition in the men's decathlon, USA Outdoors third-place finisher Joe Detmer elevated his lifetime best to 8,090 points by setting new personal bests in seven of the ten events. Following Detmer's lead, Chris Helwick finished runner-up to Detmer with 7,799 points. Even with Team USA finishing one and two, Germany was able to finish three through five and take home the team title. The overall score ended very closely with USA at 38,255 and Germany at 38,268. Team USA still leads with 13 wins in 17 outings. -- ISATF News Release, http://usatf.org ====================================================== Paul Aufdemberge To Throw First Pitch at Tigers' Game ====================================================== Paul Aufdemberge wonn something beside a medal or a trophy when he won the River Days Run. He won the opportunity to throw the first pitch at a Tigers baseball game. A group of fams, Paul Aufdemberge fans, will be at the game to help celebrate: Friday evening, September 24, Minnesota Twins. We expect Paul to bring good luck to our Tigers.

NEWS - AUGUST 11, 2010

========================================================== August 21st is "Run for the Hills" Day in Farmington Hills ========================================================== Ed Anderson, Race Director for Farmington Runn for the Hills, alerted us to this news: "Jerry Ellis, Mayor of Farmington Hills proclaimed that August 21, 2010, is, "Run for the Hills" Day ... encouraging all the citizens to participate in the race and support the good work of Special Olympics Oakland County." http://www.farmingtonrunforthehills.com =============================================== Ann Arbor Track Club's Carol Swaney Passes Away =============================================== Hi Jennie, In case you hadn't heard, long-time AA Track Club member Carol Swaney passed away early Monday morning. She'd been in ill health since spring. She wasn't the fastest woman on the road but she'd still be plugging away long after everyone else went home (or had passed out). Her obituary (http://www.niefuneralhomes.com) states, in part: "Carol?s career in running included three appearances in the Boston Marathon, as well as many other marathons, over 30 ultra marathons including eleven 50 mile events and one appearance in the Western States 100 Mile Trail Race, where she finished with a time of 29 hours and 42 minutes. She was a member of the Ann Arbor Track Club for 30 years and participated in many running groups. Her running friends were part of her extended family and she cherished every moment she was with them. Carol spent many hours running the Potawatomi Trail with her friends. Carol was a fierce competitor and a mentor to many in the running community." I got to know Carol and her husband Mike in the early 1990s, while running the Great Lakes Relays. She was a terrific competitor with a great sense of humor and one of the nicest people you'd ever meet. Anyway - apologies if you'd already heard the news, but Carol was one of those quiet people primarily out of the limelight but whose presence made the Michigan running community a better place. Laurel Park ======================================================== Nick Willis and Nicole Edwards to Run 2010 Falmouth Mile ======================================================== (Falmouth, Mass. - August 9) New Zealand’s Nick Willis, the 2008 Olympic 1,500 meter Silver Medalist in Beijing will compete in the CIGNA Falmouth, Invitational Mile on Saturday, night at Falmouth High School. High school races begin at 5:50 with the Elite Women at, 6:15 p.m. and the Elite Men at 6:30 p.m. Willis, who was born in New Zealand, attended the University of Michigan where he was a 2 time NCAA Champions and 5 time All-American. In the 2004 Athens Olympic Games he advanced to the semi-finals of the 1,500 meters. He won the 2006 Commonwealth Games 1,500 meters, and established a New Zealand record while breaking the famous John Walker’s

time in the 1,500 (3:32.17). Willis has a best one mile run of 3:50.77. Willis was twice voted “Top Male Athlete at the Penn Relays.” In 2008 Willis also won the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York City, beating out twice-world champion Bernard Lagat of the United States. “This is our first Olympic Games medalist in the mile,” said race director John Carroll. “We are extremely honored he will run here.” Willis will join Nicole Edwards, a 2008 Michigan grad and last years women’s mile runner-up as favorite in their respective races.” So Saturday could be a blue and maize day at the Falmouth track." -- Falmouth Road Race News Release ===================================================================== E2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitness: Quercetin Ergogenic or Not? ===================================================================== Quercetin is a phytochemical, a naturally occurring plant compound that protects plants from insect damage, disease and infection. Phytochemicals also give plants color, odor and taste. When we consume phytochemicals we gain many of the same plant benefits. Quercetin belongs to a subclass of phytochemicals called flavonoids. Plants containing the highest concentrations of quercetin include: capers, onions, cocoa powder, apples, cranberries, lingonberries, cherries, red grapes, broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, and green or black tea. While commercial supplements of quercetin are advertised to help treat everything from gout to allergies, controlled scientific studies are limited. Furthermore, supplements of this type are unregulated by the FDA and safety is a concern in individuals with bleeding disorders or who are on anticoagulant medications. It was held at Norfolk State University from July 31 to August 7. It was a great event that gives young people 8-18 a chance to compete against others in their own age groups on a National level in all the disciplines of track and field. "Michigan had a big contingent of athletes there as Motor City Track Club led the way with 89 athletes. I heard their name often on the loud speaker winning or placing in a variety of events. Ron Beasley from the Ann Arbor track club was there with his athletes. I also met a lot of other athletes from Michigan or with Michigan origins.

"I officiated at the Shot Put, Discus, and Pole Vault. It was a lot of work it the 100 degree heat pulling tape, measuring the shot and discus throws along with putting the bar up on the pole vault stands. The effort was well worth it as I watched possible future Olympians going for their dreams. Jerry and Jeannie Bocci-- long time Michigan road warriors were there also officiating as umpires for track events. "This is a great program for young people as I got my start in race walking in it and racewalking got me into the Olympics. Parents and coaches, bring your kids to the AAU Junior Olympics and let them dream big." Among the topics we discussed with host Gary Baker were how technology has changed running and golf. You can listen to the podcadst: http://internetadvisor.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/IA-080710-HR1.mp3. BENTON HARBOR / ST. JOSEPH (AUGUST 10) - The occasion was The Champions Challenge which featured a golf game with Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller and Tom Watson on the new Harbor Shores Golf Course. We were reminded of the wonderful runs we've had along the Lake Michigan waterfront in St. Joseph. As the day was hot and muggy, we thought about jumping in the Lake. In fact Jean Klock Park, which adjoins Harbor Shores, was the site of the huge Ironman Steelhead Triathlon held just last week. 1859 people finished. ================================================ Running USA's State of the Sport 2010 - Part III ================================================ "U.S. Road Race Trends Road Running reaches new heights with more than 10 million finishers, 17,000 events in U.S. for 2009; Half-Marathon, Marathon and 5K lead the charge/ "COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - (August 4, 2010) - Road Running continued its "boom" in 2009 with another record year of participation. Despite the lingering recession, the sport grew to an estimated 10,290,000 finishers in U.S. road races, a record high. By contrast, according to Running USA, there were just over 3.9 million finishers in U.S. road races twenty years earlier (1989). The 2009 record increase also marks the first time that finisher totals exceeded 10 million and represents the largest percentage increase (9%) in U.S. finisher totals annually since 1992. The 5K, 10K and Half-Marathon accounted for 62.3% of all finishers and 68.7% of all events nationwide in 2009. "2009 Road Running Snapshot: * In the past decade (2000 - 2009) U.S. road running finishers have grown from 7,502,000 to 10,290,000, a 37% increase. In 2009 finisher totals exceeded the 10 million mark for the first time. * 2009 is the 2nd highest percent increase in overall finisher totals (9%). Growth such as this hasn't been seen since the early stages of the Second Running Boom: 1992 (9.2%) and 1993 (7.9%), and based

on preliminary totals, 2010 should also show above average growth. * Females now account for over 5.4 million finishers nationwide and represent 53% of race fields compared to only 23% in 1989. * Total U.S. running events exceeded 17,000, an all-time record high. * A record annual increase in total finishers for the Half-Marathon (24%) and an astounding 10% increase in the Marathon, which is the largest percent increase for the distance in the last 25 years. * The 5K and 10K - the #1 and #2 most popular racing distances - also experienced higher annual increases than seen in previous years and exhibited growth patterns similar to trends seen in the early 1990s. In addition, the 5K surpassed the 4 million finisher total for the first time in 2009. * A trend toward a slightly younger race field - based on average age - suggests that road racing will continue to grow as more Baby Boomers' children, the so-called Echo Babies, enter the sport as young adults in the coming years." -- Running USA News Release http://runningusa.org/node/57770#58551 ================================ Great Performances - Road Racing ================================ -- Kayla O’Mara Memorial Run, Goodrich, Saturday, August 7, 2010 1st) Leah Scharl, 18:32 1st) Alex Ralston, 15:48 1st Master) Marybeth Reader, 19:24 1st Master) Michael Leduc, 18:28 ==================================== Great Performances - Track and Field ==================================== -- AAU Junior Olympic Games, Norfolk, Virginia, July 31- August 7, 2010 Michigan Athletes won 15 National titles and Kendail Baisden set national records in the 200m and 400m dashs.
