=============================================================== Pre-Crim Party, Friday, August 27 Will Be "Return to the '80's" =============================================================== Partying will begin at the Crim Festival of Races, Friday evening, but it's early enough to allow runners plenty of sleep before Saturday's races. 4pm - 9pm Saginaw and 1st Street, downtown Flint 4:00 D.J. Music by Black Tie Productions 6:00 - Break Dance Demo 6:45 - Big Hair Contest 7:00 - Rock Show - 80's Tribute Band 7:45 - Air Guitar Contest 8:15 - Rock Show - 80's Tribute Band http://crim.org ====================================================== Grant Alert: Funding for Female Athletes Now Available ====================================================== "The Women's Sports Foundation is re-establishing its Travel & Training Fund. The Travel & Training Fund provides assistance to aspiring female athletes with successful competitive records who have the potential to achieve even higher performance levels and rankings. Sets Record for Speed ================================================================= Jeff Overton, one of eight automatic qualifiers for the Ryder Cup team, took advantage of two conditions during Sunday's final round at the PGA Championship to play a speedy round of golf. Overton was first off the tee and his partner, Ian Poulter, withdrew because of illness. Overton finished

his round in 2 hours, 9 minutes, breaking the 2 hours 10 minutes set in 1991. The Whistling Straits course seems an unlikely candidate for a speed golf record with a minimum of five miles up and down steep hills. According to a PGA Tour news release, Andy Landenberger, a PGA pro, served as Overton’s official walking scorer. “I can confirm, there was some sprinting,” Landenberger told PGA.com. “Quite a bit actually. “He would tee off, then run. Whistling Straits is not really conducive to even walking fast, so that was quite a challenge. I remember saying to the standard bearer, ‘Hey, I guess we need to keep up,’ and we’d both take off. We’re both young, in pretty good shape. But he’d still leave us in the dust." ======================= Tina Hayward, 1940-2010 ======================= Michigan Runner Editor Emeritus, Dave Foley sent us this news about Tina Hayward: "Thought you might want to know this. Tina was an amazingly talented runner and a great person. Dave" Long time WMCKA Member Tina Haward passed away Sunday, August 8. You can visit http://www.lifestorynet.com for any additional information and to read Tina`s story. Kalamazoo Gazette Obituary: http://www.mlive.com/sports/kalamazoo/index.ssf/2010/08/boston_marathon_win_one_among.html Tina Hayward was Michigan Runner of the Year, 1987 ========================================== Ron Warhurst Starts "Very Nice Track Club" ========================================== Ron Warhurst is retired from the University of Michigan, but he hasn't retired from coaching. Warhurst has begun a new professional training group in Ann Arbor which will include Nick Willis, Nate Brannen, Lee Emanuel and Brandon Bethke. The new group is called the "Very Nice Track Club." Chris Lotsbom of Race Results Weekly reports: http://running.competitor.com/2010/08/features/nick-willis-getting-back-on-track_12265 ============================================================================ Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - THE BRONX, NYC, NY (AUGUST 15, 2010) - Bronx Half Marathon ============================================================================ Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports: " I ran the Bronx Half Marathon Sunday and it was a treat. It's part of the New York Road Runners five boroughs half marathon series. Its number four with Staten Island next before the New York City Marathon in November. A very interesting fact about this race is that it is the only half marathon in this series run on mainland USA. The other four half marathons in this series are run on islands. Queens and Brooklyn are run on Long Island, Manhattan is an Island and Staten Island.

When you think about the Bronx, you think about the Yankees and the Bronx Bombers but there's so much more to the Bronx. As I ran this race with 5000 other runners. We ran through Lehman college where it started and finished. There was a residential area, a boulevard with beautiful trees and a business district. It had some hills which I didn't expect but that always keeps you honest. A little bit of everything. Water stops every one and a half miles. Plus lots of music at the start-finish area. My hat goes off to the New York Road Runners which puts on a race almost every weekend in the New York area and they did a great job of hosting this race with 5000 runners. If you're in New York and want to run a race check out the New York Road Runners web site and sign up. Happy running on the road." ================================================================================ MRN on The Road: Kohler, Wisconsin; Harris/Escanaba, Michigan; Porcupine Mountain State Park ================================================================================= KOHLER, WISCONSIN (AUGUST 11-12) - The PGA of America joined with First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move!" initiative to hold a contest for media at the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits last week. We were issued pedometers and official cards on which to record our steps. Competitors won daily and overall prizes. No question that we got a pretty good workout scrambling up and down the hilly Whistling Straits course. Television can't do justice to the elevation changes. Among the gallery at Whistling Straits were Playmakers' Brian Jones, who was there to follow his brother-in-law, Scott Hebert, Michigan's only representative at the 2010 Championship. Scott Hebert at the PGA Championship: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-B_2Y2PGJM HARRIS/ ESCANABA (AUGUST 11-14) - We enjoyed staying at the Island Resort and Casino hotel and playing the beautiful Sweetgrass Golf Club course in Harris. After golf, we headed to the Escanaba Waterfront, which has become a very visitor-friendly place. The Escanaba Harbor-master has a new building and many new services: rent a bicycle, find a laundry mat, and use free Wi-Fi. PORCUPINE MOUNTAIN STATE PARK (AUGUST 14) - The Porcupine Mountain State Park, Michigan's Wilderness Park, in the far west of the Upper Peninsula, was a new stop for Michigan Golfer publisher Art McCafferty and I. We took in Lake of the Clouds, the waterfalls on the Presque Isle River, and the panoramic views from Summit Peak. We could hear waves crashing from our lodging, right on Lake Superior.
