Since she last won her 6th Crim in 2002, Catherine has won two World Marathon Championships, two Olympic Silver Medals, three Boston Marathon Championships in addition to the one she won in 2001 and more. Either Catherine, her sister Anastasia or her brother Samuel have run every Crim 10 Mile since 1998. This year, both Catherine and Samuel will hit the bricks. BATH (AUGUST 25) - The Eagle Eye Golf Course, this week hosting the Michigan Section PGA Championship, also hosted the very successful Dan Langdon Memorial 5K back in April. Race Director Alex Coss is the golf course general manager and expects the race will continue in 2011. Dan Langdon passed away during the Detroit Free Press Marathon in October 2009. http://danlangdonmemorialrun.com/ OKEMOS (AUGUST 25) - What are you doing on Halloween? How about Run Thru Hell on Halloween. Chuck Block of the Michigan Running Foundation is putting on a race in Hell, Michigan (near Pinckney) to help Dolores and Harrison Hensley. The race is raising money for a wheelchair accessible van so that Dolores and Harrison can get out of the house and back to the races where they belong. We stopped by Playmakers to pick up flyers which we'll be distributing at the Crim. Five athletes were sent home from the emergency room and the remaining 11 were admitted for IV fluids to prevent dehydration and prevent kidney failure. Three were sent into surgery for compartment syndrome to relieve the pressure caused from soreness and swelling in their arm muscles. All had elevated creatine kinase, an enzyme that released by muscles P. 4

when they are injured. Certainly that is not the successful start to a season any coach wants for their team! What causes elevated creatine kinase? Extreme exercise, certain medications and food supplements are all triggers. The sports camp this football team attended, like most, resulted in a rapid spike in activity levels combined with warm summer temperatures. One has to assume adequate fluid was provided. However, teens are notorious for not drinking adequate fluids, on a schedule during workouts, and what about the power mixes? Blood tests will hopefully demonstrate what role these protein supplements played. While everyone prays for a speedy recovery for this team, we need to use it as a teachable moment. * Conditioning is important all summer long, well before sports camps and the first day of practice. Conditioning allows the body to adapt to physical stress, safely. * Drink on a schedule. o 2 cups fluid 2 hours prior to your workout o 1-2 cups fluid 15 minutes prior to your workout o 6-12 ounces fluid every 15-20 minutes during o 2 cups fluid per pound lost following * Supplements are poorly regulated! Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) the dietary supplement manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that a dietary supplement is safe before it is marketed. The FDA is responsible for taking action against unsafe supplement products after it reaches the market. In general, the makers of supplements do not need to register their products with the FDA or get approval before producing or selling dietary supplements. There is no substitute for proper, progressive training and nourishing your body with real, whole foods! Toronto Waterfront Marathon on September 26th. It is an IAAF Silver Label race. Mungara also won in 2008 and is hoping for a 3-peat performance. Rono returned in 2007 to place second in a dramatic sprint to the line. That day, John Kelai ran 2:09:30 -- with Rono 5 seconds back -- to take out Waldemar Cierpinski’s 31-year-old record for the fastest time ever on Canadian soil, that had stood since the Montreal Olympics [2:09:55]. Last year, Mungara surprised even himself. After winning by two seconds in 2008, in 2:11:01, he ran a huge PR to clock 2:08:32 last Fall, and take another minute off the Canadian All-comers mark. More on this story: http://michiganrunner.net/read_new/mungara-vs-rono-duel-highlights-strongkenyan-challenge-stwm2010 ============================================================================ Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - STONY POINT, NY (AUGUST 24, 2010) - Sebagoman Triathlon ============================================================================ Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports: "I decided to try my hand at a an Olympic Distance Triathlon here in New York. I picked out the Sebagoman Triathlon put on by Genesis Adventures at Harriman State Park. This park is just 35 miles north of New York City on the Palisades along the Hudson River. Beautiful park with seven lakes and miles of open roadway. Great setting for a Triathlon race. It was a cool morning but the water temperature was still 75 degrees–– comfortable for swimming. It was a two loop course that came out to 1500 meters or .9 of a mile. Swimming's not my strong suit as I tell people I'm a land mammal. I hoped on my bike and start pedaling up hill. There were lots of them and they were huge on this 40km (25 mile) course. It was a killer climbing them but the ride down was exhilarating. I fell on one of the downhills on a sharp corner but I got right up and kept on chasing after other racers. Finished the bike ride and had to run the bike over some broken concrete, not the best surface for biking shoes. Got in the transition area and changed into running shoes. I don't have that transition technique worked out yet. I see the winner did it in 19 seconds, it took me almost two minutes. I'm a turtle in the transition zone. Headed out on the run on a hilly 10k out and back course. I didn't get into running mode until the 5k mark. Biking and running are two different sports. I finally crossed the finish line knowing that I gave it my all in a sport that takes endurance, technique and some luck with equipment that doesn't go haywire while you're racing. If you're in New york and you have a chance to do an event at Hariman State Park you'll enjoy the scenery and the facilities. Until next time, keep on keeping on running." =========================================== GLSP Television Network 2010 Event Coverage =========================================== Art McCafferty - Producer Jennie McCafferty - Associate Producer Peter Allen - Reporter MIke Duff - Reporter Gary Morgan - Reporter Tim Hygh - Reporter Brad and Bill Shelton - Reporters David Manwiller - Videographer Carter Sherline - Videographer Scott Sullivan - Videographer
