================= Quote of the Week ================= "Another thingt that got me through these last couple of months was working out and writing. I love to run and bike, and sometimes for me there is nothing more therapeutic than to go out for a long run." -- Elin Nordegren (the former Mrs. Tiger Woods), People magazine, Sept. 6, 2010.
============================================== Running Network TV: Marathon Oasis de Montreal ============================================== More than 21,000 runners in marathon, half-marathon, 10K, 5K and kids events participated in the 20th running of the Marathon Oasis de Montreal. Participants from more than 40 countries enjoyed ideal temperatures-- a relief after days of 90 degree weather, but strong winds did affect runner's times. http://michiganrunner.tv/2010montreal/

====================================================== E2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitness: Supplements: Will Monsters, Bulls and Rockstars Make You Run Faster? ====================================================== Energy drinks tout that they will increase your physical performance, concentration, reaction time and metabolism. Should you substitute, or add these, to your sports drink regimen? The chart below compares 8 ounces servings, of three leading energy drinks, to Gatorade.

Energy is measured by the amount of calories in a product. While it appears the 3 leading energy drinks would provide more energy per cup, it won’t be absorbed as well. Research shows that the optimal carbohydrate content for a sports drink ranges between 6-8% of total calories. When beverages exceed 8%, absorption slows. Brand A, B and C contain an 11%, 11% and 14% carbohydrate solution, while Gatorade provides 6%. Actually, brand A, B and C compare more closely to an 8 ounce serving of Coca Cola at 26 grams of sugar! The optimal sports drink contains a blend of sucrose, glucose and fructose carbohydrates. These take only 20-30 minutes for the body to convert them into energy for use by muscle cells. High levels of fructose should be avoided because they can cause cramping, are not absorbed as fast as their counterparts, and some people don’t tolerate them well. Gatorade contains sucrose and glucosefructose sugars. Simplicity has its value when it comes to improving absorption as well! Two out of the three brands contain double the number, or more than 20 ingredients. Food science has long taught us that vitamins do not provide energy. B vitamins in particular help with the creation of energy but adding more B vitamins won’t add more energy. B vitamins are plentiful in the American diet, and are found in grains (bread, cereal, rice and pasta), meat, fish and poultry, milk and other dairy products. B vitamins are cheap to add in the manufacturing process, and are watersoluble which is why you see the popping up in everything from fortified cereals, to gourmet waters and energy drinks. Does adding more gas to a tank that’s already fully loaded result in more miles? No, it spills out of the car. Get the picture, excess B vitamins spill out into your urine, a wasted addition. Even if you were deficient, a can of energy drink isn’t going to remedy your bad carburetor! The bottom line: Energy drinks are stimulants. The caffeine and herbals provide the bang and sugar provides the energy, once the overly concentrated solution gets absorbed. They can be dehydrating, may raise both blood pressure and heart rate, and are definitely not the charge you need going into an athletic event. A caffeine and herbal induced high may make you more nervous, unable to focus, and jittery. Compound these effects with the incorrect combination of sodium and potassium, (electrolytes lost in sweat that regulate heart rate and muscle contraction) and you have the perfect liquid concoction for a poor athletic performance! This is 17 year tradition of this race and $14,000 was raised for the organization called 211 on the Go, which helps the homeless and others in Detroit. What was really cool that evening was a guest appearance of Mayor Dave Bing. That was a treat to see him as he looks fit and still ready to play a little basketball. He greeted the runners and was the starter of the race. There were a couple hundred runners and walkers for the one mile and eight kilometer races. Belle Isle is a great place to run with no hills and very little traffic. There's been a ton of races run on that island over the years because it's such a great place. There was pizza, beer and raffle prizes for the runners and walkers. I would recommend running this as an end-of-summer treat next year. On Saturday I was video tapping the Milford Labor Day 30k. This was the 10Th anniversary of this race. It started with just 50 runners with Doug klingensmith as Race Director. Now it has grown to over 800 finishers in 4 different races. It has a kids race, 10k, 30k and a 30k mountain bike event. It was the RRCA 30k regional championship. As I interviewed the runners they all talked about how pretty the course is. They also commented on how hilly and challenging it is. Every finisher of every race got a medal as a memento of the big 10th anniversary. For replenishment, the athletes got a burger and brew; what a great combo. If you want to run long, eat well and be ready for a fall marathon come to the Milford labor day 30k. Keep on running." ================================================== Legendary Coach Bob Parks Celebrates 80th Birthday ================================================== "YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Long-time Eastern Michigan University men's track and field Head Coach Bob Parks celebrated his 80th birthday in grand style, Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, as he was honored during the football team's home opener at Rynearson Stadium. "I know how much the history of EMU Track and Field means to Bob so this poster gives us an opportunity to link Bob with all the men of Eastern who have contributed to the EMU Tradition and the Bob Parks legacy," Goodridge said." -- Eastern Michigan Sports Information news release, Sept. 7, 2010 Link to photo with news release: http://www.emueagles.com/news/2010/9/7/MTRACK_0907104221.aspx ========================================================================== MRN on the Road: 2760 miles - New Brunswick, Quebec, Montreal, Lake Placid ========================================================================== SAINT JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK (SEPTEMBER 1-2) - First stop in the Atlantic Time Zone was a place called Bannon, birthplace of Herschel McCafferty, father of Michigan Runner publisher Art McCafferty. Hotel in the old, walled city was close to history, restaurants, shops, hills, and the harbor. Looking forward to a return. MONTREAL, QUEBEC (SEPTEMBER 3-6) - This is our 4th year covering the Marathon Oasis de Montreal. Participants from 40 countries included Terry Carella, Race Director for the Cooley Law School 5K Race for Education. Enjoyed coversations with Kenyans. Lamech Mokono and Francis Kipkiter as well as Montreal's version of Paul Aufdemberge, Louis-Philipe Garnier (age 45), who finished the marathon in 2:39.21-- just a week after winning the aforementioned SSQ Quebec City Marathon in 2:39:29. Sales in athletic footwear stores rose to $8.4 billion in 2007 versus $7.1 billion in 2002. The 18% growth was stronger than the 4.4% U.S. population growth in the same timeframe. According to NSGA Sporting Goods Market reports, the size of athletic and sport market grew 24% between 2002 and 2007. According to Census of Retail data, sporting goods stores, which includes both full line and specialty, grew 38.1% to $34.1 billion in that same 5-year period.
The total number of athletic footwear stores rose 7% in the United States during the five-year period, according to the same U.S. Census of Retail data. There were 6,525 stores in 2007 versus 6,084 in 2002.
NSGA Research has extracted data on full-line sporting goods stores, specialty sport shops and athletic footwear stores into a 58-page report. For these three categories of stores, the report provides sales, number of stores, number of employees, sales per store, sales per employee and number of employees per store. This data is provided for the U.S., for the nine census regions and for all 50 states. Data from the current Census (2007) is compared with previous Censuses. Cost of the report (Sporting Goods Stores: Sales, Number & Distribution) is $140 to NSGA members, $190 to non-members.
The U.S. Bureau of the Census conducts the Census of Retail Trade once every five years. Data already released and a schedule of when additional data will be released may be found at http://www.factfinder.census.gov/." -- NSGA Research Newsletter
