Among the highlights: Nick Willis chases Aaron Simmoneau to the line and almost catches the Spartan senior (College Men), Gabrielle Anzalone is shocked to win (Girls Elite), and Junior Varsity athletes run hard to earn one of those varsity spots (Boys JV). http://michiganrunner.tv/2010spartan_invite/ ============================================================================== Michigan Runner TV: John Rogucki Memorial Kensington Challenge, Sat. Decades of toil alive under the hood; it leisurely glistens. Created for conquest; its work weary engine has endured where others have not. own 5k race. Closely nurtured from its onset, this race silently roars with earth shaking vigour. The awesome power garnered, smoke screened by scores of dedicated smiles chewing up tireless chores. Painting my annual strokes onto this iconic Michigan masterpiece, I had yet to achieve my greatest treasure quest; the little red tractor. This slick replica of the Diemer original, resting humbly on a sturdy foundation of simple wood, entranced me from the first of numerous times finishing just shy of championship ownership. A childhood ago, I became estranged from my original mold; my father. Mental illness proved impenetrable to customary family survival; yet internal connection persevered. Though our door of communication became weighted with a plethora of rusty locks, my lifetime exhaled experience through him. Whatever I did, he remained, as did hope for recovery and reunion. A week preceding this summer’s Diemer trek, I was shocked into paralytic submission; my father had died. The ever present white noise backing my existence was squelched and it was strangely silent, as misshaped thoughts fruitlessly struggled for fulfillment. Outside I floated, while inside I flailed. My bottom of being plummeted, leaving me to desperately dangle. Returning to my car after straining the final straightaway, euphoric elation pumped throughout; the tractor was finally joining me for the journey home. In the torrid heat of a Diemer morning, I was soaked with happiness. Strolling triumphantly, my body suddenly shuddered and my vision blurred. In that moment of unencumbered joy, I landed, my world realigned. My only father was gone and I cried. Alone in a parking lot, I cried. My girls said goodbye to their grandfather, but their father remains. Many glorious Diemers await and we will be there to enjoy them. -- Ian Forsyth =========================== Race Services "Now Results" =========================== We saw something new at the Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo on Sunday: Race Services "Now Results". Four computers, set up under a tent, gave runners a fast, convenient way to see their results. It appears that Race Services' owners, Tony and Debbie Newton, have a hit. Their Website promises that "Now! Results" are Immediate, searchable, & paperless. Check out the comments on their Website: http://raceservices.com/. ===================================================================== E2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitness: For the Ladies ===================================================================== Have you ever been at a party, girl’s night out, or shopping with friends, when the topic doesn’t turn to “weight”? It seems I rarely encounter this phenomenon, yet maybe it’s because I am a dietitian. Sometimes people treat our conversations like we’re in a confession booth, and I’m the priest who absolves them of their caloric sins. Comments vary from, “I shouldn’t have eaten that” to ”I might as well slap this on my hips” or “I skipped lunch in preparation for tonight!” My favorite is “I bet you don’t every eat these” because people who really know me, have seen me appreciate everything from nachos to the candy bowl, in moderation. While I realize much of the conversation is friendly female camaraderie, I cringe especially when there are children within hearing distance. Fat talk has no place at the table. Good health is more than just a scale number. Thighs rub together on the average woman, and most people don’t have more than a couple of packs when it comes to abs. Let all good foods in moderation become the topic of discussion. Restrictive eating and negative food associations between body image and so-called sin foods should not

be inserted into a child’s memory bank for future use. Conversation about what tunes you are listening to while you workout, or what types of hobbies you are doing these days to stay active are excellent discussions, and positive role modeling. Healthy bodies come in all shapes and sizes. What appears in the media, magazines and MTV represent .05% of the population, not the norm. The average model is 6’0” and weighs 120 pounds. The average female is only 5’4” and weighs 140 pounds. “Fat Talk” benefits no one, “Fit Talk” recognizes that we all work at becoming healthier, through regular physical exercise and good eating habits, most of the time. This quick video is a great synopsis on how fat talk is detrimental. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKPaxD61lwo Share the difference with your female friends! This race has a very specific goal – to raise enough funds to purchase a wheelchair assessable minivan to enable Dolores and Harrison Hensley, icons of the Michigan running community and responsible parties for the formerly infamous Run Thru Hell competition, to return to the racing scene. Few if any have given more to the running community than Harrison and Dolores. “As a race organizer,” David Howell, race director and owner of the Total Runner running stores, explained, “it was always great to see an entry form come in with Harrison’s name on it. That meant that Dolores would come along and help with the race.” She did more than help. Dolores brought and extended to all, her aura of love, kinship, kindness and strength. As Howell said, “You always knew the finish line was in good hands if Dolores was there,” but not simply because she did her job well. Dolores greeted each and every finisher with her bona fide hugs, kisses, smiles and praise. Her sidekick, Harrison, tried to come off as a gruff, cranky, old man but could never quite pull it off to conceal his gentle heart. Greg and Jenni Everal of Everal Race Management met Harrison and Dolores “through the local road races.” They most remembered “Harrison running the race” and upon completion of their own races, receiving “a big kiss from Dolores” at the finish chute. “They were everywhere!” the Everals continued. “The Hensleys volunteered a lot of their time at races, Dolores at registration and the finish line and Harrison hauling around race applications from race directors trying to promote their race.” The Hensleys have been sorely missed since November 2008 when Dolores suffered a stroke. Block has taken it upon himself to do something about it though he is not without the help of others. The response from the running community has been huge. Total Runner will provide the water; Gault and Everal Race Management is going to time the race, free of charge, using disposable D-tags, mats at the start and finish; Running Fit will provide the porta potties, Hansons’ got the refreshments, Bauman’s Running & Walking will take care of the awards and screen printing of the shirts which Playmakers will help to underwrite. Countless others are committed to volunteering their time come race day, yet hands are always needed, and while donations continue to soar, the intended goal is still quite far. Harrison, a proud man, proclaims, “Dolores does not have a lazy bone in her body. She loves runners and people and getting out to the races is the love of her life.” Don’t be fooled. This race is as much for the running community, if not more, as it is meant to help the Hensleys. Howell has said it best as he surmised, “I hope the Michigan running community will come out in great numbers on October 31, not just to help raise funds, but to show Dolores and Harrison how much we all appreciate what they have done for our sport.” Run, walk, donate, volunteer, spread the word. History is in the making – we hope to see you in Hell. It started off early Saturday morning at Kensington Metro park in Milford. I was video taping the Kensington Challenge with world famous photographer Carter Sherline. This was the 27Th edition of this race and the proceeds were benefiting the Wounded Warrior fund which helps military families in a variety of ways. It became a challenge to video this race as it started out as a cloudy morning that soon turned into a torrential downpour during the 15k race. Getting good pics and keeping the camera dry becomes tricky when it rains. When the race was over the sun came out and it was a great day for football. The runners seemingly liked the rain as it kept them cool and the post race food and music had everyone smiling as they left this Michigan classic race-- a must race for every runner here in Michigan. I headed off to Chicago to the Family Sport Festival at the Midway Palainance Park next to the University Of Chicago. This was a chance for families and children to see Olympic and pro Chicago team athletes demonstrate their sports to them; then they could try them also. I showed everyone how to race walk and I took my Olympic torch from the 1996 Olympics for them to see. It was a fun event but the numbers were low because of heavy rains-- just like Michigan. This event was put on by World Sport Chicago, the legacy sports organization from the Chicago 2016 Olympic bid. This organization helps bring sports to the children of Chicago, keep them in school and gives scholarships for college. Sunday morning I got up early and drove up to Foster beach to be a pacer for the CARA (Chicago Area Runners Association) 20 mile training run. It was run on the lake shore trail from Foster Beach-- one of the northernmost beaches-- all the way to the Cultural Center on the very south end of Chicago. It's right along side Lake Michigan almost the entire way. There were over 4000 runners there. The run had aid stations, pacers from 6 minutes a mile to 14 minute per mile, and a huge party with a band on the

grounds of the Cultural Center. Some of the runners even took a dip in the lake as there was a beach, too. To top it off the weather was fantastic. You can't get a better training run than that. Hopefully we'll get that type of day for the marathon. It was a fun filled weekend of running and sports that we runners love. Until next time, keep on moving." ================================ Great Performances - Road Racing ================================ -- Playmakers Autumn Classic 8K, Haslett, Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010 1st) Simon Ripis, 24:28 1st) Lanni Marchant, 27:35 -- Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo 5K, Royal Oak, Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010 1st) Vince Bechard, 16:19 in a 5K/10K double. 1st) Stephanie Kern, 19:14 -- Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo 10K, Royal Oak, Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010 1st) Vince Bechard, 34:26 in a 5K/10K double. 1st) Dorsey Dobry, 40:23 -- John Rogucki Memorial Kensington Challenge 15K, Sat.
