This week's entry is "Into the Wind", directed by Steve Nash and Ezra Holland. Yes, the director is that Steve Nash, the National Basketball Association MVP. The first showing aired last night; additional shows are Friday, October 1, 12am, ESPN Classic Monday, October 4, 11pm, ESPN2 Saturday, October 9, 1pm, ESPN Classic Sunday, October 10, 6pm, ESPN Classic "Into the Wind" is also available at the iTunes Store for $4.99. We highly recommend this very well done show (duration is 56:25) as an insight into just who Terry Fox is and why he is a Canadian icon. The show could also provide significant inspiration when you hit the wall in your next marathon. Web: http://30for30.espn.com/film/into-the-wind.html ========================================================== Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon Enjoys Huge Success ========================================================== Watch out Berlin. This year's Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon boasted world-class, recordsetting times, an exciting women's finish and more than 10,000 finishers in both the marathon and halfmarathon. Former Central Michigan distance Runner Matt Loiselle clocked a 2:19:02 for 17th place. Ed Whitlock, age 79, continued his legendary ways with a 1:34:26 half marathon. http://torontowaterfrontmarathon.com/en/news/2010_09_26.htm ========================================================== Liam Boylan-Pett Has joined Frank Gagliano's Training Group ========================================================== Larry Eder's Run Blog Run alerted us to some interesting news about Coach Frank Gagliano's new training group. Among the athletes training with Coach Gags is Bath, Michigan's Liam Boylan-Pett, a seven-time Michigan state cross country and track champion in high school. Boylan-Pett, who competed for Columbia and Georgetown, is a sub-4:00 miler. http://www.runblogrun.com/2010/09/frank-gagliano--one-more-training-group-by-walt-murphy-noteby-larry-eder.html

================================================== Gabrielle Anzalone Named "Harrier XC All American" ================================================== Marc Bloom's must-read publication, "Harrier XC" named seven girls and nine boys "Harrier XC All Americans, 2010". Grand Blanc senior Gabrielle Anzalone (Gabi) got the honor and a new target on her back. Bloom writes, "Anzalone showed she could be a national threat this fall as well with a courserecord 17:31 5K victory at the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing." See Gabi's Spartan Invitational performance and interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_aRvKG9aMk ========================================================== Harbor Springs Half Marathon, 10K and 5K, Saturday, Oct. 9 ========================================================== "Get your running shoes ready! The Outfitter in Harbor Springs is sponsoring the first annual half marathon. To better fit the interests of the community, the marathon has been replaced with a 10K, 5K and (by popular demand) a free Kids Fun Run. All runs will begin and end in beauitful downtown Harbor Springs at Zorn Park (on the grassy area next to the public beach)." http://www.outfitterharborsprings.com ================================== MRN On The Road: St. Augustine, FL ================================== A McCafferty family reunion took us to St. Augustine, Florida last week where we enjoyed seafood, wonderful family company and opportunities to tell marathon war-stories with cousin Dennis McCafferty. The hot, humid air helped us appreciate Michigan's year around running weather. Although the temperature may hit 90 here once in a while, we know it won't last very long. ============================================================================ Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - COLORADO SPRINGS (SEPT. 23-28, 2010) - U.S. Olympic Committee's Olympic Assembly ============================================================================ Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports: "My weekend trip started on Thursday morning as I flew out to Colorado Springs to attend the Olympic Assembly. It's a yearly convention hosted by the US Olympic Committee that invites NGB's( National Governing Bodies) of all sports, Sponsors, Athletes, USOC Board and personal. There are meetings to discuss what has happened in the Olympic movement and where USA Olympic sports are going. At the Awards dinner, Steve Pupel, a table tennis player from Grand Rapids. won the Jack Kelly fair play award. He received it because a competitor had his score card read incorrectly. Steve knew that and let him replay his match. The competitor won his round so Steve didn't make it to the final match. Steve didn't finish first or second like he could have. His honesty is what counts in life and sports. I congratulated him on being a true role model for all sports people. This was a great assembly to be at and to see the turn-around at the US Olympic Committee after the Olympic bid defeat with Chicago. I believe that there is a new era at the USOC. I ran over to the Training center to check it out. It's a far cry from what it used to be. I went there in 1981 for a race walk training camp. Then it was just army barracks, a track, dinning hall, a medical clinic and office buildings. How times have changed. No track, but theres a swimming pool, gymnastics center,

basketball courts, indoor shooting range, modern dorm rooms for athletes, visitor center with a hall of fame museum. Plus they just built a new headquarters in Downtown Colorado Springs. This is why the USA is winning the medal count at the Olympics. On Sunday I ran the 15k race against suicide at a El Pomar Youth park. It was a nice race that was run on a shaded bike-hike trail on an out and back course. After the race relatives and friends of suicide victims released balloons in remembrance for them. There were quite a few military families there also. The wars are taking a toll. It was somber moment on a beautiful day. in the afternoon I drove over to Manitou Springs which is at the base of Pikes Peak. You can see that monolithic mountain anywhere in the Colorado Springs area. At 14,100 feet it's one of Colorado's many 14,000 foot peaks. This one just stands out because it's on the front range. I started hiking up at two o'clock, a little late in the day. I figured no matter how far I went up, It's always a treat to do some mountain hiking. The 12.6 mile hike to the top is called Barr trail. I don't know where the name came from. Back in 1990 I did the Ascent race up the mountain. I can't remember my time, I just know I got a ride down from someone. Didn't want to kill my legs for weeks coming down. The ascent race and a full marathon have been put on for years. I'm sure lot's of Michiganders have done it. I remember seeing Michigan legend Ralph Judd running it that year. It was a sunny warm day and I stopped every now and then to take in thefantastic views along the way. Getting away from the city presents a whole different world. A lot of hikers were coming down the mountain. They took the Cog rail way up to the top and walked down-- a little easier way to do it. Plus a bunch of mountain bikers came by me and they had done the same thing. Adventurous souls with the bikes. I just kept on hiking, observing and taking pictures. I could tell fall is on it's way as I saw the leaves changing color in the meadows. I finally got to Barr Camp, the half way point. There's a lodge there that hikers stay the night and get breakfast for $28 a night-- a bargain. Next time I'm staying longer and making reservations. It's a fantastic spot. I hiked up two more miles and I was just shy of tree line at 11,500 feet. The sun was going down at 5:15 pm so I started my descent. Hiking in the dark without a flashlight isn't my cup of tea. Maybe if had night vision goggles like the US Army, I might have gone for the top. Better safe than sorry. At least going down it's faster, even though I fell twice. My big feet like to trip on rocks. I hit the trail head at the bottom just as it was getting dark at 7 pm. I love Colorado Springs. There's so much to do there and this is just the tip of the iceberg. It's a fantastic spot for all outdoor enthusiast people. You'll have the time of your life there. Keep on living your dreams." ========================================================= Miss Michigan Set to Run Detroit Free Press Half Marathon ========================================================= "DETROIT, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Organizers of the Detroit Free Press Marathon announced today that Katie Lynn LaRoche, the reigning Miss Michigan will run this year's half marathon on Sunday, October 17, 2010. Miss Michigan has entered the race to raise awareness for the One World. One Future. organization she founded to fight human trafficking in the United States and around the world. "Every year nearly 20,000 men, women and children are dehumanized and forced into barbaric situations. I want to use the Miss Michigan platform to draw attention to this horrific crime," LaRoche said. "The Detroit Free Press Marathon is an international race with runners from all over the world. I couldn't think of a more appropriate race to be at to help spread this message," she said. The Detroit Free Press Marathon is a three-day event beginning with a health and fitness expo on October 15 and 16 at Cobo Hall in downtown Detroit. October 17 is race day and includes a 5k fun P. 4
