Flat, fast courses, terrific raffle prizes, and a post-race feast all contribute to the event. Michigan Runner TV cameras capture the 10K, 5K and 1 Mile Junior October: http://michiganrunner.tv/2010redoctober/ ================================ Michigan Runner TV: Brooksie Way ================================= Perfect running weather, a varied and interesting course along scenic trails and the streets of Rochester, and a finish line at Meadowbrook Hall brought out the crowds for the third Brooksie Way Half Marathon. A 5K through the Oakland University Campus was scenic, too. Michigan Runner TV captured the half-marathon, 5K, and 1 Mile. Race founder and Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and running legend Frank Shorter provide a great post-race wrap-up. http://michiganrunner.tv/2010brooksie_way/ ======================================== And We Thought a Decathlon was Demanding ======================================== "Detmer named Athlete of the Week INDIANAPOLIS – Joe Detmer has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting the double decathlon world record over the weekend at the 2010 World Championships for Ultra Multi Events, hosted by Liberty University at the Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex in Lynchburg, Va. A former All-American from Wisconsin, Detmer tallied 14,571 points in 20 events, shattering Kip Janvrin's world double decathlon record by 386 points. Janvrin, a 2000 U.S. Olympian in the decathlon, had set the mark of 14,185 at the 2002 World Championships in Finland. Detmer opened the competition Friday morning, clocking 10.93 seconds for the 100-meter dash and long jumping 23-11.5. Both marks were the best ever posted in a double decathlon. Some of Detmer's other exceptional performances included a 2:02.23 in the 800, a 6-6 high jump, a 50.43 in the 400, a 15-11 pole vault, a 53.83 in the 400 hurdles and a 4:26.66 in the 1,500. Detmer also set a world record for the highest decathlon score ever posted as part of a double decathlon competition. He racked up an incredible 7,741 points in the 10 traditional decathlon disciplines on Friday and Saturday."

It was fantastic as there were people involved with sports from around the world. There were coaches, athletes, CEO's, IOC Representatives, USOC representatives, Philanthropist marketers, professional sports representatives, and sport promoters. The Summit centered on social change through sports with panel discussions on stage with some of the attendees, awards given out over the two days to people who started community programs such as soccer clubs, rugby clubs, and environmental recycling programs. Daniel Varner who is from Detroit and is the Co-Founder of Think Detroit PAL and Program Officer was on a panel on tackling youth violence in urban communities. Michiganders once again are working to make a positive impact in this world. Next year this summit is in Denver and Johannesburg South Africa. I'm sure we all will be hearing a lot more about these summits on social change through sports. Drove up to Milwaukee Saturday for the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon. I'm finally going back to Milwaukee 30 years after my first visit at a music festival called Summer Fest. I don't remember much from then. I know that this is called the beer capital of America as there are a few brewery's around. Just driving in it looks like a beautiful city on Lake Michigan, just 90 miles north of Chicago. I get to the Expo and it's a small show but still lots of excitement for the marathon. I worked at the Pacer booth signing runners up who want to be paced for a certain time. I'm pacing the 4:20 group that's 9:55 a mile. I'm there for 4 hours, then I drove back to Chicago for a 2016 one year anniversary of not getting the Olympic bid. Truthfully it became a fundraiser for two athletes who worked on the bid with us that are trying to make the London 2012 team. It was great seeing people who worked on that bid again. A lot of great friendships developed during the bid time and that's what the Olympics truly are about. Marathon Sunday is here again only in Milwaukee this time. We all hoped on busses and they drove us 20 miles out of town and dropped us of at a high school where we could stay warm until the race started. 8am came around pretty quick as all 2800 runners got to the starting line and the gun went off. It was a beautiful sunny morning and 50 degrees, perfect for running. About 30 runners with me who were aiming for that 4:20 mark. Many were first timers, excited and nervous at the same time. After some introductions between a few of us, off we went. The course is out in corn fields and the P. 4

smell of a few cows is distinctive. A big plus is that it's downhill and very few uphills on this course. The country scenery goes for miles with occasional spectators, then moves into suburban settings with more life as we get closer to the city. We hit the half way point and I still have most of my pacees with me. The course narrows down to just half a lane wide as the city streets are not closed during the race. We hit the 20 mile mark and were right next to Lake Michigan the rest of the way to the finish. We see beautiful homes along the lake, then park land the last 3 miles of the race as we can see the Milwaukee sky line. The last mile we are running through the park and I'm down to just 3 young ladies running in my group. I tell them to go ahead a finish strong. I'm thinking this is a top 10 race of my world travels. Now I know why this was selected the RRCA 2008 race of the year. I cross the finish line thankful that I ran such a cool race. To top it all off, they served me a beer-- iving up to the reputation of the beer capital of America. Come to Milwaukee and run a fantastic race with scenery to die for, PR potential, and a beverage of your choice." -- On the road again with Gary Morgan ================================== Walk to School Day In Flint Today ================================== "Leaders at Durant-Tuuri-Mott Elementary are joining a national movement designed to reduce childhood obesity rates and give students the tools they need to lead happy, healthy lives. To build excitement and begin educating children, parents and the community about Safe Routes to School, DTM school officials will lead a Walk & Roll to School Day 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6 beginning at Third Avenue Baptist Church parking lot at the corner of University Drive and Stevenson Street. The walk will begin at the church and take students along University Avenue for about half a mile. It will end about 8 a.m. at Durant-Tuuri-Mott Elementary, 1518 University Ave. Through the collaborative efforts of the Durant-Tuuri-Mott Elementary, the Crim Fitness Foundation, Safe & Active Genesee County for Everyone and the Disability Network, students at DTM are starting the Safe Routes to School program by participating in international Walk to School Day. This program aimed at making it safe, convenient and fun for children to be physically active and travel to school by foot, wheelchair, bike or other non-motorized transportation. Safe Routes to School programs provide children with the opportunity to safely participate in an active lifestyle that can help improve weight control, reduce risk of chronic diseases, and lower stress. Students that walk to school often feel more energized and ready to learn! Walk to School Day is a great way to celebrate the benefits of walking and to kick off SR2S. Walk to School Day is not only an effective way to identify people who have a passion for safety and the health of young people, but is also a great way for students and parents to build strong relationships with their school community. This event was established in the United States in 1997 by Partnership for a Walkable America, a national alliance of public and private organizations committed to making walking safe, easier, and more enjoyable. Since then, millions of walkers worldwide have celebrated Walk to School Day. For more information about Safe Routes to School in Michigan, visit http://saferoutesmichigan.org.
