Left Michigan early Thursday morning to attend the kickoff Mayors press conference for the Chicago marathon. Race director Carey Pinkowski gave Mayor Richard M. Daley a check for $500,000 towards the Mayors foundation to work with inner city Kids. Friday morning was the Elite Athletes press conference with Joan Benoit Samuelson and Steve Jones. Joan set an American record of 2:21:21 here in 1985 and Steve set the world record of 2:07:13 in the same year. Times haven't dropped a lot since then but there are more runners running those times. Our Michigan elite, extraordinary Hanson's Runner, Desiree Davilia was on stage. She talked about her training and only running two races leading up the marathon: the 3k world indoor race she in March and the 10k at the National Track and Field Championships in Des Moines. Sammy Wanjiru, Olympic champion and defending Chicago winner seemed at ease as he talked about his training and life. The Expo stated Friday and I picked up my number as I was getting ready to be a pacer for the 4 hour group. This is the 6th year in a row I've done this. I enjoy helping runners reach their goals.

Back to Michigan Friday afternoon to the Milan Dragway just south of Ann Arbor, where I made a presentation in the evening to the Sauk Trail Boy Scout Council Jamboree. 1000 scouts and family members were there as I talked about becoming an Eagle Scout, how it changed my life and helped give me the perseverance to become an Olympian. It's cool to go back to your roots. Then I hoped back in my car and drove back to Chicago. A few hours sleep and I'm back at the expo checking out all the exhibits. There's always something going on at a big marathon expo. It's all part of the show and a great people watching spot. At 3 pm I signed up people who wanted to run with pacers. Chicago Marathon has the largest pace groups of any race. At 100 strong we pace the runners from 3:10 to 5:45. I headed to the Park Grill at Millennium Park for a good solid pre race meal with friends. I highly rrecommend this rrestaurant's food and cool ambiance. Marathon Sunday is a warm morning for October and great for spectators. All of us pacers line up at 6:50 am for the 7:30 am race. We 4 hour pacers were at the start of the open corral. There were so many runners I could barly see the start and couldn't see the last people who lined up. I try to pump up the runners with some cheering but they were nervous and didn't cheer very much. Plus, there was a lot of first timers in my group. The gun goes off and I hit the start mat 10 minutes after the elites. In a big marathon you have to watch your footing the first mile as runners get rid of clothing and water bottles. I hit the first mile a little slower than pace time but that's normal as you're just trying to get around runners. The first few miles was perfect running as we're shaded from the sun by the buildings and see lot's of spectators-- the most I've ever seen Lot's of water and Gatorade are available at 21 water stops. We hit the half way point in 1:59:38-- a good split for 4 hours. At 15-16 miles it really warmed up. I knew i was going to start losing my pacees, and I did. By 30k-18.6 miles I only had one pacee running with me and it was getting warmer by the minute as the last 7 miles has no shade on the course. Even my fellow pacers started falling off. At 24 miles a fellow pacer dropped off and I was struggling also. No one was running with me and everyone around me was just wanting to finish. Running up Michigan avenue we're just wanting to make that right turn up the killer hill and a left at the top down the hill to the finish. I finally finished on a tough day. After I recovered and had some post race refreshments at the after-race party, I looked around and saw it was all over. I reminisced about how an event has so much buildup then it happens so fast and it's over. Next years Chicago Marathon will be here before we know it. Put it on the calender. Start planning to run it. I stuck around another day and went to the cool Columbus Day Parade. Chicago is a great place to visit and do things because there's always something going on.
