The expo started Friday at Cobo Hall and I was manning the Pacer Booth. I had an interesting pacer assignment Sunday as I was the "Last Chance to the Tunnel Pacer." As I was signing runners and walkers up for various paces, every now and then someone would ask about the cutoff time at the tunnel. Then I would tell them the time and they would say, "I'm making sure I'm ahead of you." There was a lot of excitement and action at the packet pickup area as everyone had to show passports or enhanced drivers licenses. Border Patrol officers were there to help with any problems. The border crossings between Canada and the USA make this marathon unique. Nowhere else do you go over a bridge and back through a tunnel in two different countries in a Marathon. Another cool thing about this marathon is all the different races. Wheelchair, hand cycles, half marathon run and walk divisions, marathon and 5k offer something for everyone. Saturday I was back working the expo booth. One of the requirements of being a pacer is helping sign runners up and tell them about pacing at the expo. There are a lot of responsibilitys being a pacer but there are also a lot of rewards, like helping runners achieve their goals. Talked to Doug Kurtis about running his 200th marathon. That's a fantastic achievement because marathon running is hard on the body. He's an inspiration to runners everywhere. After the Expo all of the pacers went to the Fort Street Presbyterian Church, right at the start line of the race and for our pasta dinner. The church volunteers served us a nice dinner and the proceeds helped the homeless in the area. It's great to see the local churches wanting to be a part of the Marathon. Sunday morning comes early with a 5 am wake up call. Pacers get together in the lobby of the Westin at 6 am with our pacer signs before heading out to the start. It's neat to watch everyone checking out the pacer signs and following them to their pace spot. As walkers got by my sign they wanted to take pictures and said "I'm staying ahead of you." It was a and I'm encouraging everyone-telling them that they will make it to the tunnel before me. The starting line area was exciting with all the lights and music. Nothing like marathon Sunday! The gun goes off at 7am and 27 minutes later I crossed the start line with the last wave. I let everyone go ahead of me just make sure they stay ahead. I had to be a big cheerleader along with the weary-wagon ladies behind me to pickup any one who couldn't make it. The first 3 miles are a little slow as the bridge wore the walkers down. When we got to the top I told them they had just a little over an hour to do a little less than 4 miles. Even at the porta johns I encouraged them to speed it up. My motto became "It's me or the bus." They picked it up along Oulette drive as there were great views of Detroit, the River and the gardens along the way. Windsor has a beautiful river front park. Everyone has stayed ahead of the bus as we get to the Tunnel entrance and we are headed for Detroit. At the halfway point walkers stop and take pictures of the American-Canadian flags that are painted on the wall. Definitely a Kodak moment. As we get to the

USA Border Patrol agents are there to greet us. It's great to be back in the USA again. We get on Jefferson and I start running and let the walkers finish on their own as I'm done pacing. I want to finish the half, see my friends finish the marathon and cheer everyone in. The medal is really cool this year with a car on it to represent the Motor City. I went to the Conquered post race party and had a post race beverage to celebrate completing another Detroit Free Press International Marathon. I've done this race 20 times and it's always a thrill to do it. This is truly a unique race that everyone should do at least once. I salute the Americans and Canadians who help put this race on every year. Keep on running." -- Gary Morgan ================================ Great Performances - Road Racing ================================ -- Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon, October 17, 2010 1st) Nick Zendler, 2:42:27 1st & 5th overall) Katie Jazwinski, 2:44:59, PB, CR, Qualified Olympic Trials 2nd) Janet Becker, 2:56:32 3rd) Hannah Norton, 2:57:17 -- Metro Health Grand Rapids Half Marathon, October 17, 2010 3rd) Josh Miller, 1:10:54 2nd) Megan James, 1:25:36 3rd) Mackenzie Adams, 1:28:07 -- Detroit Free Press Marathon, October 17, 2010 See Michigan Runner Race Series Results below -- Detroit Free Press Half Marathon, October 17, 2010 1st) Nick Stanko, 1:06:17 3rd) Josh Perrin, 1:09:24 2nd) Lanni Marchant, 1:15:04 3rd) Angela Matthews, 1:19:06 ================================== Great Performances - Cross Country ================================== -- Greater Lansing Cross Country Cross Country Championships, October 16, 2010 1st) Robbie Glew, East Lansing, 16:11 2nd) Connor Montgomery, Ionia, 16:13 3rd) Don Blight, Ionia, 16:14 1st) Megan Heeder, Lansing Catholic, 18:37 2nd) Audrey Tremaine, Leslie, 19:16 3rd) Brianne Feldpausch, 19:19 Teams 1st Men) Ionia, 55 2nd Men) Mason, 68 3rd Men) Haslett, 131 P. 4
