Kurtis ran his 200th marathon in 2:54:43, easily under 3 hours. ========================================================================= Get Your Costume Ready for Run Thru Hell on Halloween, Sunday, October 31 ========================================================================= It's almost here: the Run Thru Hell on Halloween in Honor of Dolores Hensley. We'll be joining the Michigan Running community with our video cameras for this very special event at Hell Ranch in Pinckney. As Chuck Block writes on the race website: "If you have been a runner in Michigan for the last several years then you undoubtedly know or have seen Dolores and Harrison Hensley. They put on the Run Thru Hell Race for many years which was a quality event that thousand of runners competed in. They would also travel to races every weekend and even go to mid week races. Dolores would help with registration and work the finish chute and Harrison would take with him entry forms from hundreds of races so runners could look through them and take the forms home. They were very active and important people in the Michigan running community. This all came to end in November of 2008 when Dolores suffered a stroke. Now these once active and vibrant people are confined to their house. They miss seeing all the runners every weekend and we miss seeing their smiles and all the help they brought to the race. "This race is for them. This is a one time race that will not be held again. The entire entry fee will go to the purchase of a wheelchair assessable minivan so Dolores and Harrison can once again go to the races." http://runningfoundation.com/Run_Thru_Hell_Halloween.html =============================================================== Michigan Runner TV: Manistee National Cross Country Invitational =============================================================== Put together a beautiful, fast and scenic, three-leaf clover course, powerhouse Division 3 and 4 teams, and flawless event management and you have a terrific first-time event: The Manistee National Cross Country Invitational. At the pasta dinner Friday evening, speaker Paul McMullen nailed it. Listen to Jaylee Brown in the Varsity Girls interview and you'll hear what I mean. We congratulate the race committee: Eric Ross, Bill Shriver, Doug Bell, Ian Ziske and Amanda Harthun. Aracadia Bluffs head golf professional, Greg Babinec, rode a mean bicycle lead vehicle. http://michiganrunner.tv/2010manistee_xc/

============================================================================ Save that Costume for the Fifth Third Turkey Trot, Detroit, Thanksgiving Day ============================================================================ Doug Kurtis is planning his costume for the Fifth Third Turkey Trot in Detroit on Thanksgiving Day. He's encouraging runners to plan ahead, get their costumes ready for the Thanksgiving Day races. Think the parade before the parade. There'll be awards for costumes in several categories, including an award for best float. Not sure what a runner's float is? Neither were we, but you can see some at the end of this Marathon du Medoc video which Doug Kurtis supplied: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=734ihjuMwUg Web: http://www.theparade.org/turkeytrot/index.php ============================================================================ Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - MACKINAC ISLAND & LAKE MICHIGAN CIRCLE TOUR (OCT 23, 2010) - Great Turtle Half Marathon, Lambeau Field and more ============================================================================ Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports: "Thursday afternoon I decided I was going to run a Michigan classic, the Great Turtle Trail Half Marathon on Mackinaw Island. I haven't been on that Island in 25-30 years. Time to go back to Michigan's most famous Island. Got up at 3:30 am Saturday Morning and was on the road by 4 am. I like driving at night and early morning, when there's no traffic-- just gotta stay awake. I hit the Arnold's Ferry lot by 8 am and was on the 8:30 ferry boat ride to the Island. It's a beautiful day as the sun is coming up over Lake Huron. As the ferry boat gets close to the Island you can see the world famous Grand Hotel and Mackinaw Bridge on the back side of the boat-- fantastic scenery to start a Saturday morning. Once the boat docks, everyone heads over to Mission Point Resort for packet pickup. On the way we go by Fort Mackinaw on top of the hill, a major fort during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. All the Victorian-era buildings are fantastic. This Island barely changes over time. Time on islands goes a little slower and life is a little different. I always see and can feel that on any island I visit, and here is no different. We get to packet pickup before 9:30 and the line gets long. Race Director John Gault barks out, "Be patient, we don't open before 9:30 and all our volunteers aren't here." God bless him; he's Michigan's timing expert and race director. He's done a little bit of everything in Michigan for running. We got a fleece jacket in our packet to keep us warm after the race. I was amazed looking at the straits with all the runners and walkers coming to this race. There were 2200 of us plus all the friends and family members. As I was videotaping and talking to people, it was interesting to meet how many first time racers were there. People came who had never run a road race or just their 2nd or 3rd race in years. I asked them why they picked this race and they said, "Saw it on line and thought it would be a cool race to do." The runners and walkers were from everywhere-- Green Bay, Chicago, Minneapolis and all over Michigan. The race started at 11:30 and there were two races, the half Marathon and the 5.7 mile race. The 5.7 mile race course was the last half of the half marathon route. The race starts and we run the first two miles on the road around the Island then we headed up into the interior and the hills for the next nine miles. It was a combination of dirt trails, paved roads, and bike trails; it had everything. We run by carriage rides with tourists on them, bikers, pedestrians, the fort, airport and a few spectators cheering us on. It was a great tour of the interior of the island. Just before the eleven mile mark we get back on the island circle road and head for the finish. Had to fight a little wind from the east as we

are finishing up and it was turning a little cloudy after the beautiful sunshine we started with. Everyone who crossed the finish line got a Great Turtle Medal-- a souvenir from the race. The runners and walkers were raving about how beautiful the course was and how much fun they had. My hat is off to Anne (John's better half)and John Gault for putting on such a cool race. Hard to believe this race is 14 years old. The cat is out of the bag; there will be thousands more next year. Many of the runners and walkers stuck around and went sightseeing, partying, and enjoying a day on the Island. I stayed until 8 pm and watched some of the Halloween festivities go on. This was the last weekend of the season there as everything closes down for winter. There was going to be a huge all night Halloween party, but since I didn't have a place to stay I left. Many of the runners were staying the night on the island. Next year I'll plan accordingly. I'm sure everyone had fun. On Sunday I got up and decided I would do the Lake Michigan circle drive tour. I headed over the Mighty Mac and headed west on Highway 2 along the lake. Even though it was raining heavily, the scenery was fantastic. The trees, lakes, beaches and tourist attractions keep your eyes busy. At the western edge of the UP you move into Central time and I start going south on Highway 35 through Menominee and cross over into Wisconsin. It's all farm land through Wisconsin. I drive into Green Bay and go to Lambeau Field, the home of the Green Bay Packers. It was 2 pm and the town was getting ready for the big game against the Vikings. I took some pictures of the stadium and the statue of legendary quarterback Bart Starr. I would have stayed for the game but it was raining by the bucketful and the game didn’t begin until 8 pm. That's a long day to be in the rain. I finally made it to Green Bay itself, the town that Vince Lombardi put on the map. From there I headed up into Door County, the peninsula that sticks out into Lake Michigan and see lot's more farmland. I drive along the lake to Mantiwoc, where the Ludington Lake Michigan ferry. Head south to Milwaukee then Chicago. Stopped and had dinner with a friend as it was still raining off and on. Rested up and did the Midnight drive back to Michigan. It was a super tour even though it rained. I highly recommend it when the weather is a little nicer and you can stop and go swimming in Lake Michigan. The best thing about this drive: Michigan is the most beautiful part of the drive. I've traveled all over the world and Michigan is one of the most beautiful places there is. The adventure lives on." -- Gary Morgan ================================ Great Performances - Road Racing ================================ -- Headless Horseman 10K, Howell, October 23, 2010 1st and 1st master) Andrea Osika, 43:09 1st master) Eric Stuber, 37:40 -- Great Turtle Half Marathon, Mackinac Island, October 23, 2010 See Michigan Runner Race Series Results below -- Great Turtle 5.7 Mile, Mackinac Island, October 23, 2010 1st) Justin Noble, 36:02 1st) Robyn Aro, 38:26 P. 4
