I pass 'em." -- Samantha Hansen's headband at the Run Thru Hell for Halloween. ====================================== Michigan Runner TV: Run Thru Hell on Halloween ====================================== Congratulations to Chuck Block, the mastermind behind the celebration in honor of Dolores Hensley, otherwise known as the Run Thru Hell on Halloween. John and Ann Gault and Greg and Jenny Everal donated timing services; Playmakers, Running Fit, Bauman's, Total Runner and Hansons Running Shops donated shirts, food, water, port-a-potties and several local running clubs supplied volunteers. 3400 runners came out for this one-time-only event. Photos: http://runmichigan.com Video: http://michiganrunner.tv/2010runthruhell/ ===================================================== E2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitness: Rubberbands and Arteries ===================================================== Flexible, malleable rubber bands that hold their shape when stretched. No breaks in the seams, no ties holding them together, no weakened points indicating they have been misused. Old rubber bands stick together. They have limited give, and you have to be extra careful in how you use them or new breaks will occur. Unused rubber bands grow hard and rigid. Exercise keeps your arteries in new rubber band shape. It lowers cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, weight, blood sugar, abdominal fat, and stress. Exercise increases serotonin (mood elevator), metabolism, high density lipoproteins (carries cholesterol away from arteries), lung function, resistance to infection, bone density, muscle tone, hand-eye coordination, spatial reasoning, creativity and how well you sleep. I keep wanting to write about how exercise is like a box of chocolates, quite possibly because I still have buckets of Halloween candy. Yet it’s really like a box of new rubber bands. What do your arteries look like? What are your plans to exercise this beautiful fall morning? Sheryl Lozicki, RD, MBA E2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitness http://www.e2dietitian.com

http://www.e2dietitian.wordpress.com http://www.twitter.com/e2dietitian "E2 Dietitian" Facebook Fan Page http://www.linkedin.com/in/sheryllozicki ========================================================== MHSAA Lower Peninsula Cross Country Finals, Brooklyn, Saturday, Nov. 3 =========================================================== Saturday brings one of Michigan's most exciting racing events, the lower peninsula, high school cross country finals. The MIS Speedway in Brooklyn is the site for races in all four divisions. Check the Great Performances - Cross Country - High School results from last weekend's regional races for a preview of the best teams and best individuals. For example, Gabrielle Anzalone, Footlocker 2009 finalist, Shannon Osika, Hannah Meier, Lindsey Clark, and Erin Finn each ran under 17 minutes to win their regional races in Division I. Powerhouse Dexter Boys have moved from Division II to Division I-dramatically changing the competition for both divisions. For information on the meet, see http://www.mhsaa.com/Sports/GirlsCrossCountry.aspx =========================================================== Sleep Later on Thanksgiving; Pick Up Packet Early for 5/3 Turkey Trot, Detroit =========================================================== The Fifth Third Turkey Trot in Detroit is making it easy to pick up your race packet before race day in Detroit. Times begin Saturday, November 6 and include several Fifth Third Bank locations as well as New Balance stores in Farmington Hills and Troy, Playmakers, Hansons Running Shop in Grosse Pointe Woods, Runnin' Gear in Brighton, and Bauman's in Flint. For list of times and locations, see http://www.theparade.org/turkeytrot/packet.php ======================================== What North American Runners Have Been Watching ======================================== In the past three years, Running Canada, The Running Network and the Michigan Runner television channels have put up 1,545 videos on You Tube, most on running, but a hefty number on golf, skiing, track and field, triathlons and travel as well. When we cover events, we sometimes do multiply videos, in Montreal for example, we did over a dozen. The total impact over those dozen can add up to a sizeable viewership, over 15,000 for the 2009 videos. While the figures below are impressive, they really do not represent the total viewership of each show, as the shows are also on other platforms, The Running Network, The Michigan Runner, Running Canada and as stated, You Tube. However, each of these channels have different software to count the activity and all are labor intensive. For the purposes of our clients, we simply multiply the base figure by 2.5 factor to achieve TOTAL viewership. However, since You Tube is so simple, we tend to use just those figures when getting a feel for who is watching what. Also, while we just started putting up shows three years ago, we did go back further than that to post some earlier shows. All told, the GLSP television network has put up over 4,000 videos since we started a decade ago. Our overall viewing for the 1,545 shows now up, total 832,396 views. Here are some of the running videos we have done from all over the world ANTARCTICA Antarctica Marathon Views 628 NOVEMBER 10, 2010 - MICHIGAN RUNNING

The race organizers invited the pacers to the volunteer party, a nice event that was held in the Sound Room which is a concert venue inside the casino. The food, music and video of the race was great. It's super when the volunteers are thanked for all the work they do to make races happen. Friday evening Marybeth Reader hosted a benefit party to raise money for Delores Hensley. It was packed with runners donating money, bidding on silent auction items and having a fantastic time at Marybeth's house that was totally decked out for Halloween. Saturday morning I ran a 5k cross country race at Concordia University in Ann Arbor put on by the RRCA Youth Volunteer of the Year, Ron Beasley and the Ann Arbor Track Club. There was an 8k collegiate race, 5k open and masters race, 4k and 3k races for the youth runners. The course overlooking the Huron River was challenging, hilly, and picturesque. The race reminded me of my high school and college cross country days. Unlike a road race, the numbers are small for open and masters runners. I would highly recommend runners trying more cross country races as they are different and fun to do. I stuck around to watch some of the youth runners tackle the course and it was so cool seeing them go up and down the hills. There is nothing like cross country running. Halloween Sunday and the big event for the weekend is here. As I know many of you were there for a truly special, one-time event, the Run Thru Hell on Halloween race for Dolores Hensley, held in Hell, Michigan. This event was held to raise money to buy a wheelchair accessible van so Delores and Harrison can start coming to races again. Dolores has been sidelined since she had a stroke. So many of us have great memories of seeing Delores and Harrison Hensley at races. They are the true Michigan Volunteers of Running. It was a cool crisp morning with jack frost lurking around at Hell creek ranch, with the sounds of Halloween in the background. Even with a traffic jam to get

there I saw nothing but smiles and laughs as everyone was eager to run. It was a sight to behold over 3000 people at the starting line, first in silence for the National Anthem, then everyone singing Happy Birthday for Dolores as she will be turning 80 in November. Over the loudspeaker, Dolores thanked all the runners for coming to the race and wishing her a Happy Birthday. The gun went off and everyone started to run either a 5k or 10k up that huge hill, then the races separated at the top of it. It didn't matter which race you did because it's nothing but hills there. Lot's of runners wore costumes and rand with their dogs. It was a fun run to say the least. After everyone was done and the awards had been given there was a costume contest. Lot's of unique costume were on parade at the contest. The winners got prizes and applause. Then to end the day, Dolores, close friends and family stuck around to sing Happy Birthday again and eat birthday cake. Dolores was all smiles. This is a day that will go down in Michigan running history. I'm sure that we will see Dolores and Harrison at the races in the near future after they get their van. A big salute goes to Chuck Block for organizing this race and being the race director, Ann and John Gault for donating their timing services, Running Fit for picking up the tab for the Port a potty’s and anyone else who volunteered or provided services so everything could go to Dolores and Harrison for the van. Plus, thanks go to all the runners and walkers who came and supported this event. Without you it wouldn't have been an event. Thanks to everyone for a truly memorable day.
