The dinner is an annual affair to honor all of the athletes who win championships during the Year. The New York Athletic Club sponsors athletes and teams in a variety of sports, from track and field, water polo, archery, cycling, triathlons, judo, wrestling, boxing and a few others I can't remember. In my previous life I was honored many times at this event but now I'm a recreational athlete-- not a champion athlete. The

guest speaker this year was Bill Walton, the great basketball player who was 3 time college player of the year with UCLA when they were winning 11 championships in a row. Then he led the Portland Trailblazers and Boston Celtics to NBA Championships. I remember watching him play on TV and he was awesome. He talked about the game of life, his basketball career, and his work raising money to help physically challenged people become athletic by cycling and other sports. He compared his injurys and surgerys to the rock stars of the 70's. The most important thing he said (and it pertains to all of us) was, "Through all of the things that have happened to me, I'm still out here playing in the game of life." That's what it's all about. The next evening The club reopened the gym. It had been closed for the summer during a complete overhaul. Over 300 people came out for the ribbon cutting ceremony and it was a festive affair that everyone enjoyed. It's always exciting when any building reopens. The gym has all the latest and greatest equipment for club members to use plus a new basketball court and a refurbished track. On Saturday evening, I volunteered at the Hob Nobble, Gobble fund raising event at Ford Field for The Parade Company. This was the 21st year of this event and it's a carnival party with a music band playing a variety of songs. It's a major social event here in Detroit. For the party goers it was like being a kid again as they took home lots of goodies from the carnival. I was dressed in a tuxedo for my role helping the patrons navigate steps going down to to the field. It was a fabulous party for a great cause-- America's Thanksgiving Parade. The Parade Company keeps people smiling. All of last week was about the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot in Detroit. I'm on the race committee and Race Director Doug Kurtis puts Greg Everall, Mark Kerr, Joe Baldwin, John Scott, John Wehrly and myself to work on Tuesday, driving a truck from The Parade Company headquarters off Mt Elliot in Northwest Detroit to Cobo Hall. The Parade Company Headquarters is where they build and store the floats and Doug Kurtis' race supplies. If you get a chance, go over there for a tour. It's pretty impressive how the floats and costumes are made and taken care of all year round. At Cobo other volunteers are there to help us unload the trucks and start setting up to make it look like a race is going to happen soon. As we unload thousands of shirts we know its going to be a big turkey day. Same scenario on Wednesday, only an earlier start and we were all over the downtown area putting up scaffolding, banners, mile markers and cones. Runners were coming in the afternoon to pickup packets and buy some last minute clothing at the mini-expo. It was getting festive as music was playing and there was a quick step in everyone's walk knowing they were running on Turkey Day. I stayed at the Marriott Ren Cen for the evening. I get up at 4:00 am and it's raining by the bucket full. I meet Doug Kurtis and other volunteers at the start line at 5:00 am. We try to put an inflatable column up in the driving rain with gusty winds of 25 mph. We worked on that for 30 minutes and it was getting ready to knock over the speakers. We decided to let out the air and wrapped it around the scaffolding. I'm thinking this is what race event management is all about. At least it's not a dull endeavor. Then Doug, myself, and 3 other volunteers pushed this fruit basket float that was on a makeshift bicycle from the expo area in the basement of Cobo hall up the hill on the 10k finish area to the start area where they had the costume contest. Doug's intern Carolyn at the Parade company was steering and four of us were pushing it. It was a hoot.

At 7:00 am the rain let up and darkness became a cloudy daylight, I put my video head cam on. This is a new assignment from the Michigan Runner Video Producer, Art McCafferty. I became part of the crowd, interviewed runners with costumes on, had dogs with them, or pushed babys in strollers, first time runners, people in the crowd and the volunteers. I did this as I was run-walking the 5k course. Every runner is a story with a picture. As I was walking all over the place everyone was having a great time. Luckily the rain quit and it turned out to be a great day for a race and America's Thanksgiving Parade. I watched and filmed some of the Parade and it was awesome. Hats off to The Parade Company, Doug Kurtis, and all the volunteers who make the race and the parade happen. You all made Detroit proud for another Thanksgiving. Let's be thankful everyday.
