======================================= Running Network TV: The Travels of Mr. Ubiquitous ======================================= Hood to Coast Relays http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1a4SZHxb5U The Mt. Hood Coast Relay is one of America's storied running events. This year, over a thousand 12member teams took on the challenge of running almost 200 miles from Timberline ski area to Seaside, Oregon, which is also the end of the Lewis and Clark trail. This was an event that Mr. Ubiquitious, a.k.a. Gary Morgan, could not pass up. Enjoy. AAU Jr. Olympics http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhGz94X69i8 More than three decades ago, Mr. Ubiquitious, a.k.a. Gary Morgan, attended an AAU event to try out his expertise as a race walker. His experience was such, that he continues to work harder on his track specialty, until he was an Olympic athlete at the Seoul Summer Games. Morgan focuses his interviews on many of the Michigan athletes that were in attendance. ====================================== RRCA Will Identify Runner Friendly Communities ====================================== "Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) announces its inaugural Runner Friendly Community designation. Running is one of the most popular and affordable forms of exercise to get and keep people fit and healthy, and many communities support a variety of sports and sporting facilities and at the heart of almost every sport is running. Being a Runner Friendly Community not only supports the running community, but running as the foundation for many other community-based sports (soccer, football, tennis, basketball, etc.). "The goal of this program is to shine a national spotlight on communities that standout as runner friendly and to provide incentive and ideas for communities to work towards becoming runner friendly communities. " "Runner friendly communities can increase the quality of life, can improve physical activity for residents as outlined in the National Physical Activity Plan, and can provide for increased economic impact for the community," explained Jean Knaack, RRCA executive director. "The RRCA will review three primary segments: 1) community infrastructure, 2) community support and 3) local government support. Each segment includes important criteria as part of the designation process. The goal is for applicants to prove that their community works together to promote running as healthy exercise for their community while ensuring runners safety. All applications will be reviewed and scored by a selection panel, and the panel will determine the number of communities that will receive the designation throughout the year. One top city will be selected annually by the review panel and awarded as the Outstanding Runner Friendly Community for the Year. "As part of the Runner Friendly Community Program, the RRCA has also defined what is a Runner Friendly Business. Runner friendly businesses support the running community and are safe places for runners in times of need. Businesses are encouraged to purchase the RRCA Runner Friendly Business static window decals to hang in their places of business." ========================================================================= Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (Dec. 1-4, 2010) - USATF Convention ========================================================================= Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports: "On Wednesday I headed on down to Virginia Beach for the 30th annual USATF Convention. This is where athletes, officials, coaches, volunteers, USATF staff get together and discuss rules for the sport, set the competition schedule for the new year, give out awards and a variety of other things. Track and field is a big sport that encompasses many disciplines and athletes: youth, open-elite, masters, track, road running, and field events. There’s something for everyone. Wednesday evening a meet and greet event with athletes, USATF staff, and a few members of the board of directors was a great way to kick off the convention. Thursday Morning, the sun is shinning off the ocean and into my room on the beach, so I go down and walk on the sandy, cold beach and wade into the ocean water that is maybe 50 degrees. It was cold but exhilarating. Whenever I go to the ocean I always get in the water; there’s nothing like saltwater therapy. Lot's of attendees keep on arriving and a variety of meetings are underway. The convention center in Virginia Beach is an award-winning environmental building as it is mostly self powered by solar. It has a unique look. The convention reves up a notch as it kicks off the opening ceremony and USATF President Stephanie Hightower gives the state of the USATF report. The national Anthem is sung, some awards are given out and then the video on our greatest Icons of sport is shown: Carl Lewis, Joan Benoit, Jackie Joiner Kersee and others on the video which celebrates the last 30 years. Then there was a video on this year’s events and athletes. It always cool to look back on the past year. Then there was a social event for all the attendees to mix and mingle with everyone. This convention is like reunion to see all your track and field friends from around the country. Friday I do the ocean thing again-- nothing like some cold saltwater therapy on the legs and feet. The AAC (Athletes Advisory Committee), of which I’m part, elected our officers and event chairs for the different disciplines in track and field. I am the AAC- USOC alternate rep. I was elected to this position 2 years ago for a 4 year term. I go to AAC-USOC meetings as a USATF rep. I’ll be going to Las Vegas next week for my meeting with this group. Everything here runs on Roberts Rules of Order. Go to law school to learn all about this or come to conventions. I did the later. I went to the Masters LDR (Long Distance Running) and made a presentation for the Ann Arbor Track Club to host the Masters 10K championship for the next two years in conjunction with the Dexter to Ann Arbor Half Marathon. It was accepted and I’m sure there will be a big turn out for this race. At the Youth and Associations meetings I saw Michigan USATF President Jackie Devos and Harry Weaver, long time coach of the Detroit Cheetahs Youth Track Club. Saturday evening comes and it’s time for the big event, the Jesse Owens Awards Dinner. This is USATF’s night to shine. Everyone gets dressed up for it and it’s a festive occasion. The Jesse Owens award goes to the outstanding male and female athletes of the year. David Oliver, a 110 meter hurdler and Allyson Felix, a sprinter from 100 to 400 meters, were the recipients this year. Both of them had a phenomenal year and gave great acceptance speeches. They are a couple of class acts for track and field. Other award winners were Bernard Lagat, the great middle distance runner, who received the Visa Humanitarian award for his gracious monetary gift to charities. Trevor Barron, youth athlete of the year, is a race walker who is a leading candidate to be on the 2012 team and is only 18 years old now. Brooks Johnson is Coach of the Year and Jearl Miles Clark was inducted into the Hall of Fame. She was one of my teammates on the 1988 Olympic team that went to Seoul, South Korea. It’s great seeing a teammate inducted into the Hall of Fame. She was a 5 time Olympian in the 400 and 800

meter runs. Congratulations, Jearl. Detroit’s Ralph Craig, a gold medal sprinter in the early 1900’s, was also inducted into the Hall of Fame. Michigan has always been a running Mecca. There were other award winners and I congratulate them all. It’s always special to be recognized for your talents. 2011 is just around the corner and USATF will be there to keep the sport running and thriving as everyone is looking forward to London. There will be lots of action in the sport and I congratulate this organization for putting on another successful convention.
