Martin Gore-Depeche Mode “It's a little weird.” Prefacing my request with, “It's nothing weird,” I must have foreseen this obvious response. Impulsively contacting an old friend in search of an ex-high school girlfriend's email is strange at best, devious at worst; regardless of innocent intentions. Attempting to passively reconnect with someone I no longer knew, but with whom I had once traveled the tumultuous teenage life, was prompted by a tragic reminder of the finality of being. In the end, I regained current perspective and opted to leave those memories silently lounging in the land of long ago. These remembrances of past friendships, long ignored, came bursting back to prominence upon one's permanent loss. He was a family friend, familiar enough to enjoy his subtle humour and gentle demeanour; certainly close enough to miss. Peering back through the dimly lit window of the past, a theoretical sketch of his disposition may be drawn. Extended disappointment and fruitless struggle turned to helpless depression and a numb disconnect with the reality surrounding him. Unable to solidify his position in the living world he decided to let go; forever. I imagine the heavy sadness spawned through his sudden passing would have surprised him. Warm sun shining through a grey outlook cannot help but seem cold. Near the end, his light must have been all but frozen. Covers strewn to the chill of sunless morning, I slowly stumble from comfort. Head floating with lingering strands of woven subconscious aspirations and fears, I rise. Daily reacquaintance with the light is often tricky. Thoughts from blurry midnight slumber can be difficult to reconcile with waking

consciousness. Ready running shoes donned, rolling out the walkway, linking synapses fire and all is clear. I know where I am and where I'm headed; at least for the moment. He also takes on a stroll on the River Walk, in one of America's great cities. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzaKq5jioOw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiXjbI3kRus " -- Art McCafferty ============================================================================ Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - LAS VEGAS, NV (Dec. 11-12, 2010) - USOC Athletes Advisory Committee; OCEANSIDE, CA ( Dec. 13, 2010) ============================================================================ Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports: "I was in sin city-Las Vegas for Olympic Meetings with the Athletes Advisory Committee Saturday and Sunday. I arrived on Friday and went hiking at Red Rocks Canyon. What a cool place! Just 15 miles from the city, it's an absolutely fantastic place for recreational use. Great place to hike, mountain bike, rock climb and get an exceptional view of the Las Vegas valley. There are even running races during the summer put on by Calico Racing. A few thousand feet higher than the valley makes it a truly different place. Red Rocks Canyon is a must for all you outdoor enthusiasts who visit Vegas. Another recreational area is Mt Charleston with snow skiing in the winter months and hiking to the top of the mountain during the summer. There's lot's more to do in Vegas than just hanging out on the strip. The Athlete's Advisory committee consisted of athlete representatives from all 45 different Olympic Sports discussing elite athlete issues such as drugs in sports, health insurance, training centers, ath-

lete stipends for training use and Paralympians concerns on their inclusion into the Olympic movement. It was a full table of discussions and ideas over a weekend. Monday I drove to Oceanside, California to see my old high school buddy. Oceanside is a famous Triathlon town. They host a big half Ironman in March. I was there to see a friend of mine to compete, and it was a great event. If you ever get a chance to do that race I would highly recommend it. Plus, Oceanside features the longest pier on the west coastat-- over 1500 feet to to walk out on and watch all the surfers. Come visit Oceanside. Gotta keep moving, Gary Morgan" ================================================================ Great Performances: Michigan Runners Ahead of the Curve at Footlocker Nationals ================================================================ Michigan's four girls led the Midwest team to a dominant victory in the Footlocker Cross Country Nationals, Saturday, December 11. Steve Underwood describes the team race on ESPN RISE: "From a team perspective, the race was owned by the Midwest, which went 4-6-7-8-11-12-13 for its first seven. After Lakowske and Woodward, there was Michigan's Erin Finn (West Bloomfield soph, the first non-senior in the race) and Shannon Osika (Waterford Mott senior). They were part of a super quartet from the Wolverine State that included Gabi Anzalone (Grand Blanc senior, 11th) and Brook Handler (Rochester senior, 19th). Osika said she used her experience from qualifying last year to help get her first-time qualifying teammates used to the Foot Locker experience. And she added, “We knew if we ran our best races, we'd do great as a group. More on Footlocker: http://rise.espn.go.com/track-and-xc/us/2010-xc/FL/FL-Finals-Girls-RaceStory.aspx?pursuit=TrackAndXC Shepherd''s Caleb Rhynard, who upset several favored runners to earn his ticket to San Diego, finished 35th. ============================================================ Great Performances: USATF Club XC Nationals, Charlotte, N.C., Sat.
