Carey Pinkowski, race director of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, is an exception. The City of Chicago has honored Carey with his very own honorary street sign at the corner of Columbus Avenue and Monroe. Others honored with street signs are Paul Harvey, Ann Landers, and the Magnificent Mile. Between Amtrak and our feet, we don't need a car to visit family in Chicago. The weather hinted at Spring and we took advantage of the Lakefront Trail, Lincoln Park, Millennium Park, the Museum Campus and the RiverWalk during a St. Patrick's Day visit. Everybody's Irish in Chicago on St. Patrick's Day. A highlight was a tour of the Chicago Tribune Tower, courtesy of son-in-law Brandon. We saw the newsroom, the 22nd floor deck with the view of Lake Michigan, and the 25th floor deck where we could see behind the Gothic flying buttresses and gargoyles. ============================ Running Network Preview for 2011 ============================ Houston, Albuquerque, Boston, Cleveland, Chicago, Montreal, Detroit, New York and Daegu, South Korea-- these are some of the places the Running Network will be making videos of running events. ======================================================================= Simon Bairu joins “best-ever” Canadian marathon field for Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront. ======================================================================= TORONTO. March 17th. Organizers have confirmed that Simon Bairu will compete in this year's Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon on Sunday, October 16th. The addition of Bairu to the Start List sets the stage for what will arguably be the best-ever Canadian race over the classic 42.195km distance. He will join Reid Coolsaet, Eric Gillis and Rob Watson from Guelph's Speed River Club, and Kingston's Dylan Wykes, who is currently training with Richard Lee's Lower Mainland Group in Vancouver. Coolsaet, Gillis, Wykes and Watson are currently ranked #1, #2, #3 and #4 in the Marathon in Canada. Bairu set an impressive new Canadian 10,000m record of 27:23 last May, before dropping out of his much-anticipated marathon debut in New York City in November. Combined, the five athletes arguably represent the best group of men's marathoners that Canada has ever had — and certainly combined on the same starting line. When Coolsaet ran 2:11:23 at last year's Toronto Waterfront, it was the fastest marathon ever run by a Canadian on Canadian soil, and the fastest marathon by a Canadian in 24 years. It also gave him an Olympic qualifying standard for London 2012, with a sub-2:11:30. Gillis narrowly missed the challenging Athletics’ Canada standard, running 2:12:08 at STWM 2010, one place behind Coolsaet. Two months later, Wykes had a major breakthrough, taking his previous marathon best of 2:15:16 down to 2:12:39 in winning the California International Marathon in Sacramento. Watson made his debut at the Houston Marathon in January in a disappointing 2:16:17 after passing halfway in 65:28. As Canadian 10K Road Champion and runnerup at the 2010 National Cross Country, he is favoured to do much better in his second outing. Simon Bairu is considered by some to be the best of the group, following an outstanding career for Canada at shorter distances, capped by his a 13th place finish at the 2010 World Cross Country Championships [the first non-African] in March, and his impressive 10,000m record set on the track at Stanford last May. http://torontowaterfrontmarathon.com ================================================================================= Running Network's Mr. Ubiquitous - GRAND CANYON, LAS VEGAS, PHOENIX (Mar. 16- Mar 22) ================================================================================= Mr. Ubiquitous, aka Gary Morgan, reports: Part II Wednesday evening I met up with a friend and we did a 5 mile run at Sunset Park. There was a 3/4 mile running loop in the park and the park is lighted at night. Baseball and soccer fields are all over this park along with picnic benches on which to hang out. It's a nice park just outside the center city. As I drive and walk around Las Vegas I find it to be a very nice place to live. You get one mile from the strip and it becomes just another city-- not an entertainment capital of the world. Lot's of recreational activities are everywhere. It's vacation land. On Thursday I met up with one of my fellow Comrades runners, Joyce Forier. Joyce is the owner of Calico Racing which puts on a variety of races in the Las Vegas area. Saturday she's hosting the Red Rocks Canyon, half-marathon and marathon. Red Rocks is the Las Vegas Recreational hotspot 15 miles from downtown with lot's of hiking and scenic overlooks in the park. I helped Joyce load up her truck with supplies for the race. She became a prophet as she told me in South Africa that she would put me to work on one of her races if I ever came to Vegas. Overall I enjoyed it as it keeps me in shape lifting boxes onto trucks for a couple of hours.

Friday I did my Bikram yoga at 7am and start looking for a different place to stay. I'm at the Stratosphere and it's becoming a zoo because it's the center of the universe for the NASCAR crowd. This is a big race weekend here in Vegas and you don't get much sleep when that crowd is in town. It's an all night party time. Luckily I found a place out by the airport that was a little quieter. I was planning the next part of my trip and I called the Grand Canyon because I got this crazy idea of hiking the Canyon. They had three nights lodging available: two nights at Bright Angel Lodge on the South Rim and one night at Phantom ranch at the bottom of the Canyon. I booked it and it started Sunday night. Saturday morning is race day at Red Rocks Canyon. I ran the half marathon. It's a tough race as the first half climbs well over a 1000 feet of elevation. The second half is a moderate down hill to the finish. The course is one loop of the park drive. With over 900 runners, this is Joyce's biggest race. Everyone got a medal and a super spread of food was available for all the finishers. A nice sunny 70 degree day makes it a home run race to run sometime. Checkout the website at Calicoracing.com and find a race when you visit Las Vegas and get a race in out here in the desert. Sunday comes and I'm packing up to leave and the phone rings. It's my friend Joyce. She needs some help to unload 1100 traffic cones. Good thing there were three of us to unload them. Two hours later we we're done and I'm on the road to the Grand Canyon. All the runners out there who don't see the effort, that's what road race management is all about-- a lot of work. I get to the Grand Canyon 5 hours later and see a couple of flakes of snow as I park my car at the South rim right across from the Bright Angel lodge. Check in and I have a beer at the Bar. Three guys come in who have been hiking through the Canyon. I tried picking their brains about how the trail is but they didn't say much other than they had hiked 50 miles in the Canyon in a day's time. They said there was some ice and snow in places. They were muddy from the knees down. I was going to find out on Tuesday myself. Monday morning I get up early and try to catch the sunrise at 6:30 but it was cloudy so not a picture-perfect sunrise. I walked along the south to Yaki Point and back to the lodge. Checked all the lodges, lookout points, visitor centers and rest areas. There's so much history and scenery along this Canyon it's unbelievable. It's mostly a paved trail right along the rim. I must have walked 17 miles. It was a partly cloudy day with the sun coming in and out and a few snow flurries. At 5pm it all changed, the clouds came in, it got dark, the wind picked up and a blizzard came in. It was a heavy wet snow and I caught the bus back to the lodge. I had Gary Morgan starts his Grand Canyon hike. dinner and got ready for the big hike to the bottom of the Canyon the next day. I heard wind and snow all night long and I didn't know what to expect for morning. I get up and there are 4 inches of snow with ice underneath. It's only 20 degrees out. I had my running clothes on and running shoes with Yak Trax on them. Then caught the bus to the South Kaibab trail Head. I want adventure I'm getting it. Started hiking down that icy trail. Glad I had my Yak Trax. First P. 6

time I had ever used them. 2 miles into the Canyon the ice is gone and it's in the 40's already. As I'm hiking down the Canyon it's truly amazing to see how the Canyon is changing before your very eyes. Century's of change in just a few short miles of hiking. I run into a train of mules dumping dirt along the trail to fix potholes. I was talking to the mule master as he was guiding them and we had a great conversation about the Canyon. A mile later I was crossing the bridge over the mighty Colorado River. I try to think back what it must have been like for John Wesley Powell-- one of the first explorers to navigate the Colorado through this Canyon 130 years ago. It must have been exciting and Colorado River and bridge dangerous at the same time: the adrenaline rush. Half a mile later I walk into the worldfamous Phantom Ranch. This is the third time I've been to the bottom of the Canyon and it will be my first time staying here for a night. I check in, drop off my bag and set off on a 6 mile hike to Ribbon Falls. When I get there it's a small waterfall that over the years has left a mound of sentiment on the rock below it-- pretty cool to see. Hike back to the ranch and get a great steak dinner. taken in advance of when you book your room there, none at the door as everything comes in daily by mule train. I stayed in a dorm room with 9 other hikers; it was like a hostel. There were three other dorms, about 10 cabins and around 20 campsites. Everything was filled and many people book a year in advance. I got in because of a cancellation. I listened to the Ranger talk in the dark about the creation of the Canyon and the rock formations. It was really cool as I looked up in the sky and saw so many stars from the bottom of the most famous Canyon in the world. I got a 5 am wake call for 5:30 breakfast. I loaded because I knew i was going for a hike I had always dreamed about-- all the way to the north rim. It's 6am and I'm on the trail as it's starting to get light out. I'm going light with my running clothes, hat, gloves, two bottles of water, and my Iphone to take pics. No phone reception is available in the Canyon. 6.5 miles later I stop at a camp site and talk to some hikers to see if they had hiked to the top of the North Rim. They told me they didn't hike all the way up there so they didn't know the conditions. I didn't see anyone else for next 16 miles. I hiked for two more miles to a place called Roaring Springs. This is the source of the water for Phantom Ranch and the South Rim. They have diverted water from somewhere at the North rim and pump it from here all the way to the South Rim 16 miles away. Water at the South Rim used to be brought in by rail car every day until the 1970's. It was warming up so I get rid of my outer gear and was down to running shorts, a tech shirt, two bottles of water that I refilled in the streams and the Iphone. Had to make time. The next 6 miles were some of the most beautiful scenery and challenging hiking I had ever done. This trail Grand Canyon North Rim Trail was carved right into a wall of rock. The CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) built these trails in the 1930's. You could only imagine how they did it as it drops 1000 feet straight down. There's no railing. It was icy in spots with boulders on the trail and a small waterfall to hike around. Good thing I had my Yak Trax. I made it to the tunnel which is 1.7 miles from the top. It was 11 am and I watched the clock knowing I can't be out here when it gets dark. I gave myself one hour to make it to the top. Most of the rest of the way there was three feet of snow to go through and I'm at 8ooo feet. I said to myself "I may never be here again, just put the Eagle Scout receptors on and put the hammer down." Away I went-- re-adjusting the Yak Trax every now and then. As I sunk down in that snow past my knees, I knew that if anything happened to me up here nobody was going to see me for awhile, like Saturday or Sunday when the weekend crowd comes up here. When I stopped once, I didn't hear anything other than an occasional bird chirping. It was amazing to be this deep in nature. I finally hit the North Rim. It's 12 noon so I had time on my side. Nobody is there as the North Rim is closed from mid October to mid May. I can see why there's a lot of snow here; it's a 1000 feet higher than the South Rim. I took pictures of the trail head signs and all the snow around to prove I was there. I even ate a bunch of snow as my water was now gone. I'll refill on the way down. Dreams do come true as I had dreamed about hiking here for over 20 years. This truly was P. 8

one of the most awe-inspiring hikes I've ever done. It's as great as climbing Mt Whitney, Mt Rainier, Mt Kilimanjaro. This is one of the world's greatest hiking trails. I started my descent, refilled the water bottles at a stream, and 4 hours later I was back at the Phantom ranch. It's always easier to hike down than up; you just have to be carefull not to fall over rocks because you don't lift your legs high enough. It felt good to be back at Phantom ranch. I still had some hiking to do because I didn't plan on staying at the ranch for the night. I reloaded on trail mix and Snickers bars. Bought a flashlight and started hiking at 5:30 pm. It gets dark at 7pm. I say goodbye to Phantom Ranch, cross the bridge and head up the Bright Angel trail because it finishes at the lodges. The South Kaibab trail is 6 miles from the lodge and buses don't run late. This trail has many potholes on it as this is the most-used trail in the Canyon. It was a slow go. I hit the half way point up to the Rim at Indian Gardens. It's pumping station for water but there are springs here so there are a lot of trees and vegetation in this part of the Canyon. That's how it got it's name. I had been hiking for about an hour with this flashlight. It was starting to get a little dim. I hiked for another hour and it quit just three miles from the top. I couldn't see the trail anymore so like a good Boy Scout I called it a night and hit the Eco Friendly bathroom for the night. It had a light in it, protected me from the cold and the park rangers keep it clean and it didn't smell. I stayed there until 6 am when it became light out. Those last three miles were steep, with lot's of potholes before the steps and icy near the top because it dropped below freezing that night. Yak Trax came in handy again. Next I saw a mule train carrying supplies down to the Phantom Ranch. It took two hours to finish the hike and when I got done, I thought I had just run Comrades again. I hurt all over. I added up all the mileage and it was 56 miles in two days. It was a spectacular hike and I would highly recommend you put this on your bucket list. You won't be disappointed but I wouldn't tell any body else to do it in 2 days. 3 to 4 days would be better. I rested for a few hours, took a shower and started driving to Phoenix.

My drive to Phoenix took me through Flagstaff-- the winter playground of Arizona. I went by the big ski resort of Snowbowl. Snowbowl is right next to Mt Humphrey, a 12,000 foot plus mountain. Lot's of snow there. The cross country ski center was just down the road. This is a big training area for distance runners. They have told me there are lot's of trails to train on here. It looked like a great place for recreation so I'm sure the runners love it here. I drove through Sedona, the beautiful Red Rock area, on my way to Jerome. Jerome is an old copper mining town that, in the early 1900's, was one of the largest copper mines in the world. The mines

are closed now and the town has become a haven for artists. The town is on a hill and you can see for 50 miles all through the Sedona Valley. This is a phenomenal view at sunset as the colors come to light with the setting sun. I met a person there from Munising (Michigan) who was the restaurant manager at the old Grand Hotel there. His grandparents owned land in the Munising at Pictured Rocks before it became a park. No matter where I go I meet people from Michigan. This is a neat little town. A guy told me about a little ghost mining town one mile away that is really cool. It was at closing when he talked to me about it but if you're in Jerome check it out. It's an out of the way place and it's different and different is good. I finally got to Phoenix late and tired. This was going to be a rest stop before going home. Hung out with some friends and did some Bikram yoga to stretch my body out. On Saturday I volunteered at the Spartan Race, an 8 mile obstacle course. Runners jump over a fire pit, run through a mud pit, go through a small tunnel, climb over a 10 foot wall, crawl under barb wire in the mud and traverse a 20 foot wall Grand Canyon South Kaibab Trail by holding onto 2 by 4 pegs. When you don't make through each obstacle you have to do 30 burpees which is a combo of a pushup and standing up real fast. It was crazy and fun to be a volunteer and direct the runners where to go. I would have done it but my legs were trashed out from the Canyon hike. This is a traveling race series so to see where the next one is check out http://Spartanrace.com 1000 runners there had a blast. Sunday I went to the Scottsdale Art Festival. It had some great southwest artists there along with some super bands playing a variety of music. Reminds me of when summer comes to Michigan and festivals are everywhere. Early Tuesday morning I drive back to Albuquerque to turn in my Volkswagen Bug. I drove 2600 miles out there. It's a long way between cities in the desert Southwest. The drives are worth it with all the fantastic scenery. As I hop on the plane I know I'll be back again. Come out here for a vacation or running trip you won't forget. Staying on the road. -- Gary Morgan.
