Speaker Named for ASU’s Spring 2022 ‘In-Person’ Commencement Ceremony By Kenneth Mullinax/ASU Alabama State University will host its Spring 2022 Commencement Convocation on May 6 (Friday) at the ASU Stadium. The keynote speaker for the in-person event is Hiram Eric Jackson, an entrepreneur and philanthropist who has a 30-year track record of success in business and community activism.

Hiram E. Jackson “The commencement ceremonies will be ticketed events,” explained ASU’s provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, Dr. Carl S. Pettis, who also serves as the chairman of the Commencement Committee. “Each graduate will be given 10 tickets to share with their family, friends and supporters. We did increase the number of tickets this year; however, we are still observing relevant COVID protocols.”

By Andre Ash DETROIT -- The Detroit Branch NAACP held its 67th Annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner, Sunday. Speakers for this year’s event centered on the issue of freedom and democracy, alluding to what civil and political see as an attack on voting rights push by conservative groups. “The goal of the coordinated attack is to systemically disenfranchise communities of color,” said, Governor Gretchen Whitmer. “I’m focused on growing equitable opportunity for everyone who lives in this great State to realize the protentional and pass prosperity in a way to live with dignity and to raise a family.” The theme for this year’s annual event is, “Freedom is Expensive, But Tyranny is Unaffordable”. “As we face the onslaught of voter suppression, the marginalization of people and minorities throughout the nation, the recent, we believe, execution style murder of Patrick Lyoya on the part of a Grand Rapids police officer still demands the need for police reform, war in Ukraine and elsewhere, the need to fight to preserve our freedom and our democracy remains paramount, said Rev. Wendell Anthony, president of Detroit branch NAACP. “Right here in the state of Michigan we are facing an attack on freedom and our right to vote with the introduction of 39 bills, “the blind 39,” by Republican legislators seeking to suppress, delay, confuse and intimidate. We will not be deterred. We encourage everyone to Take Their Soles To The Polls And Vote.” Attendance doubled since last year amid the relaxing of pandemic protocols. It was a return to the red carpet as guest lined the entry way welcomed by billboards of Black excellence and Black civil rights advocates.

ABOUT ASU’S COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER Jackson is the chief executive officer of Real Times Media (RTM), a multimedia company headquartered in Detroit, Mich. His company is one of the nation’s leading creators of African-American content that comprises eight websites, spanning across multiple media platforms. In addition to its digital platform, the company annually executes more than 50 events that showcase black excellence across the nation. Jackson is also the founder and chairman of Catalyst Detroit, a nonprofit entity that centers on projects and investments that advance black entrepreneurship, social innovation and economic development. Jackson serves on numerous Detroit-area and national boards, including the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, NAACP, Automotive Hall of Fame and the National Newspaper Publishers Association. Jackson earned his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University’s New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations and is a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

WHAT’S INSIDE

It was an all-star lineup of awardees and celebrity guests who were honored for their leadership in advancing a social and economic agenda of Black people both nationally and locally.

Standing up for the rights of others is what the civil rights organization has done since its inception. This message was amplified in the crowded room at Huntington Place in downtown Detroit.

Celebrating Sunday with the Detroit Branch NAACP for its anniversary and in the fight for freedom were several Hollywood actors and actresses. Ms. Elise Neal of the Black Hamptons, Ms. Annie Llonzeh of Chicago Fire, Mr. Lamman Rucker, star of Greenleaf, Chris Spencer, comedian, writer, director, creator of Kevin Hart’s Real Husbands of Hollywood, Scott Evans, host of Access Hollywood, Tobias Truvillion, of Equal Standard and Empire, and of course, and Ms. Angela Yee of the Breakfast Club radio show.

“The pandemics of racism and the Coronavirus turned our worlds upside down, but still, we rise,” said Kamila Landrum, Executive Director, Detroit Branch NAACP. “The battles ahead of us to protect voting rights, civil rights, education, jobs, and the economy, women’s rights and so much more must be fought without fear and unapologetically.”

The Detroit Branch NAACP honored recipients of the Ida B. Wells Freedom and Justice Award for Honorable Judge Cynthia Diane Stephens, recently retired from the Michigan Court of Appeals. State Representative Sarah Anthony received one of the Great Expectation awards for the work she has done in the legislature with introducing the Crown Act to protect women of color from discrimination and cultural prejudice. The second Great Expectation Award was presented to Christian Smalls of New York who recently organized, for the first time in its history, Amazon workers into the Amazon Labor Union. “It feels great to see workers standing up to their employer,” said Smalls.” We had a democratic election and actually went and vote to have a union for the first time in American history.” Gary Torgow, Chairman of Huntington National Bank, received the James Weldon Johnson Lifetime Achievement Award. The organization says his philanthropy and positive entrepreneurship throughout this metropolitan area is legendary.

The Fight For Freedom Fund Dinner was launched in April 1956 under the leadership of Branch President Edward M. Turner, Arthur L. Johnson, and Dr. Lionel F. Swan. The Freedom Fund Dinner was founded in a period of renewed national hope and determination among Black Americans, even in the face of continuing racial violence and tragedy. The financial support for the annual Fight For Freedom Fund Dinner ensures that the long-storied civil rights organization remains on the front lines. For the past 44 years, the Detroit Branch NAACP has held its major fundraiser, the “Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner.” In 1999, the dinner was attended by 10,000 guests, including Vice President Al Gore as the keynote speaker. The event’s 1999 theme, “Leveling the Playing Field for the 21st Century, “called for continued focus to fight for equality and opportunity for all citizens of the United States.

Tackling Mental Health in the Black Community By Megan Kirk

ay celebrates Mental Health Awareness Month and mental health continues to be a highly discussed issue coming out of the pandemic. As the coronavirus helped to uncover many disparities in the healthcare system, it has also revealed mental health issues that, for some, were left unchecked. Access to mental health professionals is becoming increasingly difficult with the influx of patients seeking help. However, financial access creates another barrier in the search for mental stability. With rising insurance premiums and the high demand for therapists, counselors and life coaches, the journey to sound mental health is presenting a challenge for some in the Black community.

This is the 110th anniversary since the founding of the Detroit Branch NAACP. It was in 1912 that Detroit received its charter to operate as a local branch. Several Black leaders came together to establish the Detroit Branch NAACP.

“Well, I always say that grief is an essential part of our mental health because it is an emotional response to a loss, change or death. In this pandemic, we are not only grieving loved ones who have passed on due to covid, but the plethora of changes and transitions that has come along with it; social distancing, job loss, virtual learning, fear, anger etc. We’ve all had to readjust our lives and lifestyles since 2020,” says LaToya Latham, a grief coach.

Triggered by pre-existing issues and an insurmountable amount of death, the impacts on mental health can be felt by all, but particularly those in the African American community. With so many stigmas already tied to mental health for African Americans, finding affordable care can seem daunting. With close to 12 percent of

Food Sovereignty Remains an Issue for Detroiters 165 353 245 081 356

Grocery stores are facing an unbearable battle as the cost of food continues to rise. As shelves become bare, questions around food sovereignty and sustainability loom and threaten to impact families across Detroit. Local urban farming communities are attempting to shift the narrative and provide ways to not only feed the community, but also to educate the masses on farming practices. Food equity in Black communities has been a hot button issue for several years, however, the pandemic has helped to shed light on the issue and has motivated organizations and individuals to find solutions to the growing problem. Food sovereignty, though not a new concept, is gaining steam as urban farmers work to level the playing field for healthy food options in cities like Detroit. “Food sovereignty is a vision that is yet to be realized. Food sovereignty is the ability of a community to design and control its food system that guarantees access to healthy, nutritious, culturally appropriate food and the community’s right to define what that means for itself, as opposed to the corporate-driven food system that values profit over people. Food sovereignty also speaks to the people’s relationship to nature and how that relationship is critical to the health of both people and the planet. And so, we are building a movement towards that end,” said Hanifa Adjuman, a founding member of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network (DBCFSN). Access to healthy food options is a priority for inner city families. Nutritional challenges are plagued by fast food restaurants and poverty across urban neighborhoods. This leads to a litany of health issues related to diet for many African Americans, who are already predisposed to certain conditions. To counter this, the Detroit People’s Food Co-op, a

Hanifa Adjuman works in garden. community-owned grocery cooperative, works to serve members and the general public by providing foods locally sourced by urban farmers and allows for consumers to purchase fresh produce with a knowledge of its origin. “Food sovereignty requires that we share responsibility in the complete process, the understanding that when we each provide input, we all share in the output. Even amid so much dreadfulness, we have successfully grown the Detroit People’s Food Coop membership as we continue to navigate through this horrific pandemic,” said Adjuman. “Between June 2014 and January 2020, we had recruited about 500 members. From January 2020 to the present, our membership has grown by approximately 850 members to almost 1350 in two years.” To help further the mission of food sovereignty and sustainability, the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network received $500,000 alongside Keep Growing Detroit, which received $400,000, from Rite Aid Healthy Futures. DBCFSN will use its portion of the proceeds to continue the push for food sovereignty in the community while also funding programs that will extend to the city’s youth. “We will use the Rite Aid Foundation grant to expand our existing Food Warriors program. At present, we operate programming at two sites. We have an afterschool program at Barack Obama Leadership Academy, the former Timbuktu Academy of Arts and Science,

with the financial challenges of everyday life. For African Americans, disparities in healthcare already present challenges on the journey to wellness. However, financial hindrances make the road even more rocky. “I would say that Medicaid has increased their mental health to unlimited visits in a year which is great for the minority population seeking mental health assistance. I have however did my research and learned that a lot of great therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists do not accept state insurance because a small percentage of the middle class and all of the upper class can sustain the cost of private insurance. Also, state insurances pays a lesser amount of what private insurance companies for their reimbursements,” says Latham. While the African American community remains hard-hit in mental health care, Black men tend to suffer at even greater rates. Groomed to be providers void of emotional expression, Black men are at an even greater disadvantage in mental health disparities. Access to therapy options are limited in the female-dominated field leaving many Black men in search of a therapist or counselor who can identify with the unique challenges of being Black and male. “I have a unique situation of my own because I’m an African American male and there’s not a lot of me doing therapy. I stay busy because there’s a lot of people looking for an African American male when this field is heavily dominated by females,” says Jamell Jefferson, licensed professional counselor. “You may have Black females doing this and then you have Caucasian males or Caucasian females, but there’s such a disparity between having that African American male that somebody can talk to and relate with.” The boom in telehealth has afforded many the opportunity to gain access to the help needed. Formally, many insurance companies did not cover telehealth services, adding another layer to dis-

on the eastside of Detroit. In addition to the afterschool program, we have a Saturday community program at my church, the Shrine of the Black Madonna, located on Detroit’s westside. In April, we added a second school to our afterschool programming and hire two site coordinators to lead those programs,” said Adjuman. “The grant will also allow us to re-engage our 16-week “Food N’ Flava” youth entrepreneurship program, which teaches youth aged 14 to 16 the skills necessary to become food entrepreneurs. The city of Detroit has a vibrant local food entrepreneur landscape, and our youth should have an opportunity to be a part of that landscape; with Food N’ Flava, we want to give them the tools to make that a reality, if that is their vision.” Building a tradition and laying the foundation for food education, DBCFSN hopes to show neighborhoods, particularly children, the life of the foods they consume. “Children especially should know that the origin of their food does not begin in the grocery store. As a community, we must know how to grow, cultivate and prepare our own food; we must also reclaim the knowledge of our ancestors who understood the potential for healing that plants possess,” said Adjuman. “Part of our Food Warriors programming is learning the ‘secrets’ of herbs and what we call ‘weeds,’ and the many health benefits they hold. Dr. George Washington Carver reminds us, ‘A weed is just a flower growing in the wrong place.’ But once we can learn the ‘secrets’ the weeds possess, we understand that the weed is exactly where it should be. And in that lesson, the children learn to respect and revere the natural world.” DBCFSN is encouraging the community to get active in their own way. While everyone must play a role in food sovereignty, the organization is providing the tools needed for the cultivation of personal gardens to increase sustainability for families and neighbors.

parities. However, since the pandemic, insurers are covering telehealth, giving many the chance to seek therapy from the comforts of home. “With the shift in Covid, a lot of the insurance companies are paying now for that service where it used to be an option,” says Jefferson. The American Psychiatric Association estimates about 27 percent of African Americans live below the poverty line. As economics continues to be a main factor in keeping African Americans from receiving mental health care, many therapists and coaches are offering affordable alternatives. “As a counselor, you still have to make a living. With insurance, having access to insurance is one way, but then it’s ‘what are out-of-pocket costs’ because a lot of times, with insurances, you have to meet deductibles before they kick in or you have to meet copays and then each agency or counselor will have a set fee for their hourly for-service rates,” says Jefferson. “Some companies offer a sliding scale to help people meet income issues.” Though some advances have been made in addressing racial and economic barriers, the healthcare industry still has a long way to go in leveling the playing field. “I am a firm believer that there is light at the end of the tunnel, but we must be willing and ready to do the light work. Healing is never the easy part and in order to start that journey, we must be ready to sacrifice comfort. Because covid is possibly here to stay, that word alone could be a trigger for many,” says Latham. “To heal, we must find a way to cope with each trigger we identify. Go to therapy, hire a Grief/Life Coach, allow outsiders who are professionally trained to guide and support you.” For this year’s Mental Health Awareness Month, the National Alliance on Mental Health is spreading the message of “Together for Mental Health” signifying it will take everyone’s voice to level the playing field for advancing mental health. Access to care, particularly for African Americans in urban areas is essential to the mental stability of Black communities.

“Community building through sharing knowledge from our personal stories and collective experiences is essential for building food sovereignty because food sovereignty is about the collective ‘we,’” said Adjuman. “There is no such thing as a food sovereign individual. Food sovereignty depends upon a community collectively having the ability to grow its food, determine the process and procedures of production and distribution and develop and implement the policies that accomplish those practices. When we can feed ourselves, we can free ourselves.”

Eastpointe Mayor Pens Children’s Book

Roots.

michiganchronicle.com

By Sherri Kolade Monique Owens has a story to tell. As Eastpointe’s first Black mayor, the history-maker, status-quo disrupter, and influencer she decided to pen her noteworthy achievements as a trailblazer in her newest children’s book “Mom, What’s a Mayor?” Her story is being told to stir interest in local government for youth and to identify those that are historic figures of today. With a focus on civic education, her book is to touch the lives of students who can also be change agents within their community, according to a press release. “When you get to be a writer of what you become --on how to be a leader—I came up with a book on how to open our minds on how to do that and make it happen,” Owens told the Michigan Chronicle, adding that Mayor Monique Owens there are so many different leadership roles, especially in local government that some Black people don’t know of. “We don’t know about based on history and (a deliberate) path and keeping us from those leadership roles.” Owens added that several years ago after she was elected mayor,

her twin daughters, Kameron and Kayden, asked her about what her duties were as mayor in the city of over 30,000 residents, of which about 40 percent are Black. “(They) wanted to know my role I just took on and I felt it was my job to educate them and if these little minds in my home want to know and understand … I knew at that time I was going to write the book and be all across the board,” Owens said adding that the African American community is still celebrating her victory. “(For them it) was good to see representation but if you don’t know what I’m representing -- not just people of color ... that was important to me (to spread the message). “I want you to know I’m not just an African American woman and leader but want you to know what I’m leading too.” More importantly, Owens was also inspired to ensure that other children know that people in those

ince its inception in 1965, the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit & Vicinity has been on a mission to collectively address issues impacting people and communities in Detroit and throughout Southeast Michigan. While The Council doesn’t discriminate and choose the people and communities to help, Detroit and its residents stand at the heart and soul of the organization. Detroit has a Black population of 550,000-plus living in every community in the city. And with 4,000-plus Black churches, Detroit has more than any other city in America.

Comprised of more than 300 members – pastors, assistant pastors, ministers, Christian educators, and evangelists - The Council, a non-profit organization, has often been “the definitive answer” to the proverbial question in times of crisis for disenfranchised people, “Where is the Church? Rendering top leadership to the organization is Rev. Dr. Steve Bland Jr., who was installed Council president on January 26, 2020. In addition, an Executive Committee brain trust was also installed, consisting of Rev. Richard R. White III (First Vice President), Rev. Orville K. Littlejohn (Second Vice President), Dr. Audry Turner (Secretary), Dr. Yvette Griffin (Treasurer), Pastor Sylvester Sartin (Assistant Secretary), and Dr. Edwin Holmes (Financial Secretary). “My theme going in as Council president was, ‘Looking forward, going further, climbing higher,’ ” said Bland. “From that, I began visualizing ways that I could move The Council’s mission forward to become more community-engaged, even though historically, The Council has had a sustained presence in the community and has been a voice for the voiceless on a myriad of issues impacting folk socially, politically, economically, educationally, and areas of health and wellness.”

Less than two months after Bland was installed, the COVID19 pandemic was declared worldwide. Closer to home, the deadly pandemic disproportionately affected African Americans in urban settings, including Detroit and surrounding cities in Southeast Michigan. Suddenly, The Council faced a health calamity not seen anywhere in 100 years. Every sector of life was severely disrupted, including the place where faith believers normally turn to for refuge during the storms of life: the church. While some churches were able to adapt to the technology allowing them to continue Sunday worship services and other church events virtually, many pastors and churches were caught flat-footed. “The pandemic showed that many preachers were more theology than technology,” said Bland. “When the pandemic hit, many churches suddenly couldn’t engage person-to-person. The Council worked hard to get pastors engaged in embracing new methods and technology to communicate with their congregations. The truth is that churches who didn’t embrace and utilize the technology to communicate were pretty much irrelevant during the pandemic which is still going on.” Bland said The Council has provided other services to help people and communities during the pandemic, such as becoming a key source for dispensing PPE equipment and coordinating campaigns and church sites for people to get vaccinated. The organization has also provided needed food and other supplies to families. The Council was a close ally of The Michigan Coronavirus Task Force on Racial Disparities, created by Gov. Whitmer and facilitated by African American Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist to investigate the causes of racial disparities in Michigan, especially Detroit, and recommend actions to address those disparities. And The Council debuted

In The Council’s quest to address all issues facing underserved communities in Detroit and its vicinity, the organization has actionable commissions and committees, including Health & Human Services, Political Action, Social Justice, Economic Development, Christian Education, Public School Education, Interfaith, Public Relations, and Mental Health. The Council has been proactive in addressing issues manifested during acts of racial injustice and police brutality against Black people that caused millions of people around the globe – including Detroit – to protest for change, civil rights, and economic equity. The organization has been proponents of the people’s voting rights and preparing them to flex political muscles at the polls for change. While The Council, according to Bland, does not endorse political candidates, it does help influence voters to make more informed decisions on candidates and proposals. “Our job is to help highlight candidates on the ballot by interviewing them, examining their platforms, and giving candidates a chance to be heard,” said Bland, who sat on the Legacy Commission convened by Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans recently to vet candidates running for Congress in the 13th Congressional District and ultimately choosing Adam Hollier as the consensus candidate. “We help people see who the

better choices may be, regardless of party affiliation. It’s a slippery slope but The Council finds ways to help voters make informed decisions.” Members of The Council, said Bland, stood at 173 polling local and regional locations during the hotly contested 2020 General Election, standing up to those who attempted to deter people from voting. Bland coined the phrase that went viral: “We have gone from picking cotton to picking presidents!” While consistently busy with The Council, Bland still serves as senior pastor of Liberty Temple Baptist Church, a 2,000-plus member congregation on Detroit’s west side. He is President of the storied Michigan Progressive Baptist State Convention. Bland is a renowned speaker, lecturer, revivalist, and forward thinker on Leadership Development, which bodes well for his top executive role with The Council.

When Bland was installed Council president in January 2020, Gov. Whitmer sent a statement to him saying, “Throughout your storied career, you have remained connected to your church, faith, and community,” the Governor wrote. “This dedication has made you a driving force for positivity in Metro Detroit. Your strength as a leader has been a testament to your service. Your influence over the years has made you a perfect fit for this role.” For Bland and The Council, the beat goes on because the need to empower underserved and disenfranchised people in Detroit and surrounding cities goes on. “We are the gatekeepers tasked to say - Do right by God’s people,” said Bland. “There are not many areas in our communities that have not heard the name Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and Vicinity or have not seen the fruits of our labor for positive change. However, we want to keep reinventing ourselves and doing the work to be relevant now and for new generations.”

iscussing business can be a daunting task, particularly for those who are not well-versed in money conversations. Those just starting out and business experts hope to ensure they are getting paid top dollar for their goods and services. Yet, some remain uncomfortable with having conversations about money. In today’s market, many jobs do not offer compensation information up front. This could leave a lot of room for negotiation. However, many believe that salary compensation is set at the price a company or organization offers. A valuable skill set can be the difference in salary as some companies are willing to negotiate for the ideal candidate. All is not lost when hoping to earn more money. Here are a few tips to help ensure employees are maximizing their financial opportunities:

1. Preparation: knowing the ins and outs of the company for which you are vying is key. This would include any financial news the company is known for as well as having an understanding of how much particular positions pay across sectors. Having a good grasp on pay rates for any one particular position will help to ensure the company is being competitive in pay. Be sure to ask questions at the preliminary interview and not wait until the position is offered. Asking questions that center around pay lets a company know that an applicant is considering the position, but it also allows for transparency in what the applicant feels is a fair wage for their desired position. 2. Know your strategy: according to Harvard Business Review, there are five different styles of negotiation strategies. Each comes with its own desired outcome: collaborating or working together to find a viable resolution for pay that will satisfy each party; competing or looking to solely have the applicant’s needs met despite the company’s offer or stance; compromising, similar to collaborating but

differs in that there is a middle ground that is met through a push and pull; accommodating, which puts the applicant’s needs on the back burner and places an emphasis on the company’s or organization’s financial offer; and avoidance, which translates to doing away with the negotiation process as a whole. Each company and hiring manager will respond to a varying level of negotiation methods and it is key to figure out which style will work best before interviewing. 3. Have your mind set: the decision to compromise, collaborate or negotiate any financial terms is solely up to the candidate. While there is no harm in asking if pay options leave room for increase, having a set amount in mind can help applicants have a hard base. If applicants are aware of the market’s salary rates for any particular position, it can help set the tone for all negotiations. However, with a hard number in mind, applicants will know what they deem as fair for the skills and knowledge they will bring to the position. It also helps work against low-balling or being paid under-market

value for the same position. 4. Don’t be afraid to counter: according to a survey from CareerBuilder, many applicants, just over half, do not negotiate for higher salaries when offered a job. In the same survey, 47 percent believe a job will revoke an offer if they submit any counter offers for salary. Thirty-six percent do not want to be seen as greedy and 51 percent are not comfortable discussing money with employers. However, financial stability is key in any job offer. Fear of financial discussion with your employer could leave workers underpaid and overlooked. 5. Consider the time: if the position is a contracted position, you may want to consider the length of the contract in order to determine a fair wage. 6. Take a day to think: there is no harm in taking a pause to consider all options before making a decision on salary and pay scale. However, don’t take too long as there may be other candidates up for the position. Money is a long game and decisions should not be rushed.

Community Advisory Board Helps Biogen Promote Diversity in Clinical Research

ifteen years ago, at the age of 42, Israel Robledo was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Shocked, he spent the next nine months coming to terms with his diagnosis. “I was married. I had three girls at home. I was working as a schoolteacher. And I was thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, my life is over,’” he says. “I only knew about older people having Parkinson’s.”

But, after that first nine months, Robledo realized that being a victim didn’t suit him. So, he decided to be proactive and became a patient advocate for those with Parkinson’s disease, working to ensure transparency and diversity in clinical research. Robledo, who is Hispanic, is one of 18 members from underrepresented communities offering their experience to biotechnology company Biogen. Community Feedback The Community Advisory Board (CAB) was established to serve as a bridge between Biogen team members and communities that have encountered a lack of education, awareness and access to clinical trials. This includes those who identify as Black or African American and Hispanic and/or Latino, and it has recently expanded to include Native Americans, Indigenous People, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Further compounding these issues is the distrust of clinical trials due to historical events and injustices. “Let’s face it, pharmaceutical companies don’t have the best reputation,” Robledo observes. “But Biogen is building trust. They realize people of different races and ethnicities react differently to medical issues and to clinical trials.” The Board was set up in partnership with the Center for Information and Study on Clinical Re-

Robledo credits the company for its approach of making direct, immediate changes to communication materials based on CAB members’ input. “I’ve been a patient advocate with many pharmaceutical companies, but none have been like Biogen,” he says. “When other companies ask for patient input, they say, ‘This is what we’ve done. Tell us if you like it or not.’ But Biogen says, ‘Tell us what we need to change so that it impacts the patient community the way it needs to.’” The final products are, as Robledo says, “pretty darn good. I take pride in saying these materials are something that we came up with. Providing a voice is why I became a patient advocate.”

Looking to the Future The CAB and Biogen’s work towards building diversity, equity and inclusion into its clinical research is garnering industry attention, winning the 2021 Global Pharma Patient Champion Award. And Biogen’s recent addition of voices from other underrepresented communities points toward its continued efforts to better understand the needs and challenges among various populations. The end goal: to better develop potential medicines that are safe and effective for all. “It’s our way of ensuring that a diverse voice is heard and built into our clinical development and the way we approach drug development,” Wilson says. “When we look at the work ahead of us to really improve representation in our clinical trials, it’s so critical that we’re involving the diverse communities and voices in that process.”

Improving Representation in Breast Cancer Clinical Trials & Developing Better Medicines for All

T

he devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly on communities of color, has been a painful reminder of the racial and ethnic disparities that have long existed in our country. In the United States, Black people tend to have higher rates of chronic and progressive conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer, and face greater obstacles when it comes to prevention, detection, and treatment. This is especially true in the breast cancer space. • Black women are often diagnosed at later stages and can often have a worse prognosis [1]; • Black women face a 20% to 40% higher mortality rate despite overall rates of breast cancer in Black and white women being about the same [2]; • Black women have a 39% recurrence rate and a 52% higher relative risk of death compared to white women [3]; and • Historically, Black women have been underrepresented as participants in breast cancer clinical research [4]. Through allyship with community partners and leaders in communities of color, Pfizer is focused on continuing to improve diverse representation in breast cancer clinical trials. Most recently, Pfizer partnered with the Tigerlily Foundation to launch Health Equity, Advocacy and Leadership (HEAL) sessions to advance education around clinical trials for Black women with cancer. The program focused on: • Shedding light on the breast cancer journey for women of color. • Improving access to breast cancer clinical trials for women of color. • Building trust and enhancing the relationship between breast cancer patients and their care partners. • Educating women of color on clinical trials and strengthening their capacity to increase awareness and participation in breast cancer clinical trials. • Identifying barriers and determining solutions that can improve access to breast cancer clinical trials, with the hope of sharing these learnings in other treatment areas. “Race, literacy, financial barriers, access, social, systemic and hereditary backgrounds should not be determinants of life and health equity,” said Maimah Karmo, President, Tigerlily Foundation. “There are significant opportunities to strengthen engagement among the Black community, healthcare providers and medical organizations, toward improving health and health outcomes. In order to bring about change, we have banded together with colleagues and friends to advocate for increased access and awareness of breast cancer research for women of color. We are excited to partner with organizations, like Pfizer, to work to transform systems globally – with one vision – to champion Black breast cancer as a social justice issue and eradicate as many barriers as possible that lead to loss of life for Black women.” Race, ethnicity, age, and sex can all impact how different people respond to the same medicine or vaccine. This is why diversity among clinical trial participants is so important. The more diverse a group of clinical trial participants, the more we can learn about the safety and efficacy of a potential medicine or vaccine for people who have characteristics like those of the participants. Participation is

entirely voluntary and for those in a position ensure every person is seen, heard, and cared to give it, it is a gift. for. As a leading global pharmaceutical company, Pfizer is committed to working with Tigerlily Foundation and communities of color to help reduce health disparities. The HEAL sessions provided an inspiring forum that reinforced old and uncovered new commonalities, obstacles, unique experiences of Black patients, and the gaps in access to clinical trials as an option to consider. Each session allowed Pfizer and patient advocates from the Tigerlily Foundation to have open and honest dialogues on the disparities for Black women living with breast cancer, and uncover potential solutions and tools for patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and clinical site staff.

Representation matters in clinical research because it ensures that medicines and vaccines in development benefit all. The HEAL project demonstrates one way Pfizer is doing its part in ensuring women of color are represented in clinical trials. MILLENNIAL

By Megan Kirk The evolution of cannabis consumption has come a long way since its early days of use. Used in medicinal recipes by crushing the plant to activate its healing properties or lighting it ablaze to release its aromatics, cannabis is now consumed in a multitude of ways. The mechanisms used to consume the plant have also changed over time. Now, apparatuses are becoming increasingly sophisticated and help to conceal the plant’s potent smell and large plumes. Smoking marijuana is the most popular use of cannabis in the current day. What was once consumed in papers and cigar wraps is increasingly being used in a more discreet fashion. Gone are the days of simple wooden pipes and leaves. Now, indulgers face a myriad of options to inhale the green goodness. However, it is not the only way users can toke. Devices have become more sophisticated and elaborate as cannabis grows in popularity. Smoking marijuana may be one of the quickest ways to feel the effects of the plant and now more than ever, users are looking to feel a high that will last.

t is no secret that moms get things done. From parenthood to managing careers, mothers have been juggling a delicate balance between various aspects of life. While it is a challenge, some mothers wear their hats with ease. This Mother’s Day, the Michigan Chronicle honors three mothers who are excelling in business and motherhood.

Paris Johnson, 30:

forensic scientist and entrepreneur. Owner of Shooting Starr Studios, Big Fluffy Fro and PaCha Designz. Mother to one daughter, aged 3.

Best parenting advice: To not be afraid to ask for help. Dangerous tropes such as “strong Black woman” can sometimes make women feel less adequate if they ask for help. It takes a village to raise a child, utilize your resources and don’t feel bad about it.

Bongs: Bongs may be one of the oldest smoking apparatuses used with cannabis. Dating back to the early 1100 CE, bongs were first discovered in Ethiopian caves, though some speculate that bongs could have originated in Asia like the plant itself. Since its early mechanisms, which included wood craftsmanship, bongs have come a long way and are typically made of glass. Celebrated as the latest innovator of glass bongs, Bob Snodgrass is credited for modernizing the bong during the 1970s. Bongs are now considered the most popular device used to consume marijuana and can range in size making each hit individualized.

Most lit parental moment: My daughter is 3 years old and continues to surprise me with her intellect. We’re currently working on addition and subtraction. Celebrity or tv mom style: I’m not sure if there’s a tv mother that qualifies.

Vaporizer:

Andrea Cook, 32:

Recently in the news for its damaging effects on the lungs, vaping is growing in popularity. First patented in 1927 by Joseph Robinson, it was not until more than 30 years later that vaporizers would get their big break. Modern day vapes evolved from a 1960s invention on the earlier-made version. Herbert Gilbert patented a device he called the Smokeless and since then, vaporizers have been used by many cannabis consumers as a way to discreetly indulge. Since that time, many versions of the vaporizer have been patented and continue to evolve into new and easier ways to indulge.

Mother to one daughter, aged 5.

Pipes: As old as cannabis itself, pipes have been discovered to be one of the oldest tools used for smoking. While it can be hard to trace their origin, the earliest pipes have been used during ancient Egyptian empires. Throughout time, pipes, in their simplest form, have been created from clay, stone, wood and coconuts. Now, similar to bongs, pipes have been master-crafted using glass that can withstand high temperatures. Spliff: This combines two forms of smoke, both cannabis and tobacco. Wrapped in joint paper, spliffs help to solve the craving of users who enjoy the best of both worlds. Unlike blunts, which also contain tobacco but are wrapped in cigar papers, spliffs contain a higher concentration of tobacco and are much more potent. It also allows users to mask

Portia Powell and daughter.

Portia Powell, 37:

CEO Good Vibes Lounge, and President, Wealth Investher Network Mother of one daughter, aged 15. Best parenting advice: As a single mom who had a daughter at a very young age and at the beginning of my career finding balance was always my struggle. What worked for me is being able to make working and being a mom coexist instead of treating them separately. My daughter was very visible in my corporate life and went on business meetings and attended corporate events as my guest and now that I am a full-time entrepreneur she is engaged in my business. I also treat her at events and activities the same way I would treat a meeting and make her just as much of a priority. Most lit parental moment: My mother introduced me to real estate and it has created wealth and opportunity for me that wouldn’t have been possible, being able to introduce that to my daughter and have her just recently express interest in becoming a realtor is very rewarding. Passing something down that has been generational and continuing the legacy my mother started has been the most rewarding aspect of being a mom. Celebrity or tv mom style: I think my parenting style would be comparable to the mom on Gilmore Girls (Lorelai Victoria Gilmore).

Best parenting advice: The best advice I can give is to do your best! Be the best role model you can be for your children, but it’s okay for them to know you aren’t perfect and even “grownups” don’t have it all figured out. I apologize when I make mistakes, I explain myself to her so she understands the reason behind my words and I am honest when I need a break. While being a mother is incredibly rewarding, it can also be stressful so remembering to just be Andrea is important so I can juggle being as successful as possible in my career while still being a great parent. Most lit parental moment: When my daughter told me she was proud of me after I closed on an investment property! She heard me and her dad talking and he expressed how proud he was. A few minutes later, she asked what we were talking about so I explained it to her and she grabbed me and said “Mommy, I’m so proud of you.” That literally melted my heart! Celebrity or tv mom style: Cookie Lyon. She literally helped to build an empire, while bringing her kids along with her. Besides her shadiness at times, I can see a lot of myself in her with her tenacity, love for her children and thinking outside the box to make business deals happen.

Phorks Grill Takes Detroiters by Storm

By Megan Kirk

Get your forks ready to indulge in a dish that is rising in popularity. The pandemic helped many entrepreneurs realize and execute their dreams, allowing time to pour into their crafts. A local Detroiter launched a restaurant from her grandmother’s home and is now opening her first brick and mortar location for Phorks Grill. Courtney Moore is taking over the crab industry one dish at a time. What began as a catering company of the same name has grown into one of Detroit’s latest hot spots. Dishing up shell-free crab, Moore got cracking on transforming her catering business into a full-time venture. “I had a catering business that mainly focused on soul food and I branched off into a unique seafood business where we would shell the crab for you,” said Moore.

The idea was birthed from a fa-

vorite pastime shared between a mother and daughter. After an encounter with a restaurant patron who viewed their method of crab cracking, the evolution of Phorks Grill owner Phorks began Courtney Moore. to take shape.

and tell what size it is. I can tell from the taste if it’s Russian, Canadian. I can tell,” said Moore.

“People were always fascinated watching my mother and I eat it when we will go out to eat so I just thought it would be really cool to put it on a menu so people could enjoy it the same way we do and it kind of took off from there,” said Moore.

Seafood delicacies, particularly crab, have been known to break the bank. The Phorks owner spends thousands of dollars each week to deliver quality products to customers. To present the finished product, she and a small team of employees spend hours shelling upwards of 400 pounds of crab each week.

A true crab aficionado, the Phorks owner is able to differentiate crab from regions and determine the quality of each. “I wouldn’t say a crab connoisseur, but I am. I can look at a crab

Phorks Grill offers a variety of dishes, but none more popular than crab. Capitalizing on the crab boom, Moore developed a concept many restaurants do not provide. By serving crab free from its shell, Moore has been able to create crab boil bags with no added hassle leaving crab lovers able to indulge in their favorite dish without strife.

“I spend maybe about $7,500 a week or more on crab. People think I’m just charging [a lot]. Thirty

Phorks Grill From page B-1 pounds of crab at minimum is $600,” said Moore. Beyond Phorks, Moore has a larger plan for her restaurant. In addition to the brick-and-mortar location, Moore plans to extend her business into a large-scale operation. Pushing to be the first in her craft, the crab connoisseur wants to open doors for others by becoming a major player in the seafood game. “For the most part, I haven’t seen any Black females in the crab business. People have restaurants and they sell seafood, but they’re not into it like I am,” said Moore. “I ship frozen crab across country. I ship it to all states. I would think I’m the first Black lady of my age group roughly to even be into crab or crabbing like that.” Moore has managed to keep a low profile while building her brand. Often confused with being a male or a part of a larger conglomerate, the queen of crab has used the anonymity to her advantage. “Half of the time when people talk about Phorks, they don’t even know it’s a Black lady. I stayed a little discreet for the most part. I have no problem with my face being out there. I just never really did so people know who I was,” said Moore.

Phorks Grill will expand its business this coming summer with a storefront location. The menu will include classic shelled crab along with fried rice, seafood alfredo, sandwiches and several other dishes. The menu will also feature their iconic flavored butters. Set to open at the top of the summer, Phorks Grill will find its new home at 20430 W. 7 Mile Road.

the smell of the marijuana as the scent of tobacco often takes over. Dab: No, it is not a dance made popular in the South. A dab refers to the wax substance that is created by combining butane and cannabis. Since the cannabis concentration is higher than most forms, the potency is also higher. While it is not the same as smoking, dabs can be used together with a tool named an ‘oil rig’ to inhale the wax. The marijuana scent does not linger long and is considered one of the most discreet ways to indulge. As marijuana consumption continues, more devices may come about as improvements on age-old mechanisms that have evolved over time. Now that more states are looking to legalize cannabis consumption, indulging may become more creative with the tools used to enjoy their tokes.

Declutter It! Update Your Space for Good By Sherri Kolade Spring has sprung – are you ready? The season, which began on Sunday, March 20, and ends on Tuesday, June 21, is a time where flowers are in full bloom, colors come alive, and thoughts return to purging out the old and in with the new through cleaning and organizing. From the coat closet to the bedroom and more, spring cleaning can be a way to not only clear out the clutter but also to renew the mind in numerous ways. According to Apartment Therapy, there is a multitude of ways to encourage self-care through spring cleaning. “There’s a reason why organizing shows are so popular right now,” explains Michigan-based mental health counselor Kelly Houseman in the article. “You feel physically lighter when you’re decluttering your house.” Professional organizer Andrea Wolf of Organize Detroit agrees and describes spring cleaning as a “lifestyle.” “It’s not about labels and making things look perfect,” she said. “It’s about a healthy mindset.” Some ways to declutter intimate spaces and places throughout the home can also include minimalizing the bedroom. To get optimal rest, www.healthline.com provided some tips you can easily follow to do just that: Increase Bright Light Exposure During the Day Your body’s natural time-keeping clock (known as your circadian rhythm) keeps your body from going out of whack. Turn off the lamps and get some natural sunlight or bright light during the day to keep the circadian rhythm healthy. This improves daytime energy, as well as nighttime sleep quality and duration.

New Season New You? By Sherri Kolade “Each of us has that right, that possibility, to invent ourselves daily. If a person does not invent herself, she will be invented. So, to be bodacious enough to invent ourselves is wise.” The late Maya Angelou knew what was up when it comes to knowing who you are – and redefining what that means through the process of growth and change. Growth we know begins with you, and being well into spring, where are you with your New Year’s Resolutions this season? Have you put them down and on the backburner or have you gone down the list? It doesn’t matter where you are as long as you keep it going even if that means starting over again. Be Spoke Wellness Partners wrote in an article that becoming a priority in your own life can be accomplished in a few steps. “When you think about paying attention to yourself—your dreams, your body, your mental health, and everything that has to do with you—what is it that you are thinking about?” author Limor Weinstein wrote. “How would you feel if just for one hour (and maybe we can even stretch this a little bit to one day), you only think about you and your needs? Many of us confuse taking care of ourselves with being selfish or inconsiderate, but if you truly give this some thought, you’ll realize that in or-

Optimize Your Bedroom Environment Many people believe that the bedroom environment and its setup are key factors in getting a good night’s sleep. These factors include temperature, noise, external lights and furniture arrangement. Numerous studies point out that external noise, often from traffic, can cause poor sleep and long-term health issues. Also, to make a better bedroom environment, try to minimize light and artificial lights from devices like alarm clocks. Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, relaxing, clean and enjoyable place. Then you can get some good, well-deserved rest. Fixing your Surroundings “I really do believe that our surroundings have so much impact on our headspace, our mood and everything that we do,” Wolf said in Apartment Therapy. Another study revealed that talking and negatively thinking about clutter can create signals to the brain that bring cues to the brain causing thoughts of sadness and anger. “If we can declutter our outside world, it’s a reflection of decluttering our brain as well,” Wolf said in the article. “There’s a sense of control when you declutter because you’re able to let things go and it’s empowering.” “A lot of clients will come to me with all these house projects to get done,” she said in the article. “That can lead to anxiety, too, because we’re procrastinating and putting it off. Once we actually finish a task, though, there’s such a feeling of accomplishment that it kind of gets the ball rolling.” Clean Spaces Promote Healthy Lifestyles Want to lose weight? Declutter your space. That’s right. According to the article, a more streamlined space has a “profound impact on your lifestyle.” Also, diet and exercise habits are oftentimes impacted by clutter and a decluttered house makes room for making healthier snack choices. Think about that next time you pick up that bag of chips or chocolate bar. “One thing I’ve learned with my kids over this past year [of learning remotely] is that when they’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, I immediately go organize their rooms,” Wolf said in the article. “Those things have such a profound impact on our wellbeing and our productivity.”

der to be all that you want for everyone else you must first take care of yourself and make yourself a priority.” Weinstein wrote that re-engaging your motivations and dreams can include a few steps like being a bit self-centered, in moderation. Step 1: Tell yourself it’s okay to sometimes be selfish. “While saying ‘selfish’ has negative connotations, I am using it purposely because I think that it is important that you know that it is okay to take care of yourself and attend to your needs,” Weinstein wrote adding that one thing to do is stand in front of the mirror and ask yourself: “What do I want? What do I need? How can I make myself feel better at this moment?” Step 2: Write down several things that are priorities in your life and do them. Step 3: Find out what is holding you back from your potential. “For most people, fears and anxiety are at the core of why they’re not making themselves a priority,” Weinstein wrote, adding that, “whatever it is standing in your way, once again, ask yourself why.” Step 4: What is it that will make me happy? “Often, making yourself a priority isn’t easy and maybe it includes talking to a therapist who can help you see what it is that you really want more clearly,” Weinstein wrote.

Becoming a priority doesn’t happen by accident. Tamela Todd, a Detroit-based certified mental health coach, told the Michigan Chronicle previously that setting boundaries can go a long way. As the owner of The Tamela C. Todd LLC Brand, the author, mental health coach and speaker recently released her latest book and course, “Healthy Boundaries: How to Say NO Without Feeling Guilty.” Todd says that boundaries are “invisible fences” for one’s emotional, mental and physical well-being and if boundaries are not set up, people can easily “infringe on your rights and make you feel disrespected.” Todd, who also started a mental wellness movement, “My Mental Health is NON-Negotiable,” promotes the importance of taking care of yourself first so that goals can be easily prioritized. “I help women turn their emotional trauma into healthy habits and behaviors through my online group coaching programs,” she said. “Even when some people don’t like what you do, they will likely still respect you for standing up for what you believe in. Boundaries also generate safety in personal and business relationships. When your privacy is respected, you are more likely to feel heard, validated and appreciated.”

Is it Anxiety or ADHD? Restlessness, uneasiness, overwhelming feelings and then some. These characteristics could easily describe anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In a report of the Journal of Affective Disorders, published online, stated that one in four adults aged 2039 with ADHD had generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Those with ADHD were four times more likely to have anxiety at some point in their life, when compared to those without ADHD. Even after controlling for other relevant factors, including sociodemographic, adverse childhood experiences and a lifetime history of substance use disorders and major depressive disorders, those with ADHD still had more than double the odds of anxiety. “These findings underline how vulnerable adults with ADHD are to generalized anxiety disorders,” said lead author Esme Fuller-Thomson, professor at the University of Toronto’s Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and director of the Institute for Life Course & Aging. “There are many studies linking adult ADHD to depression and suicidality, but less attention has been paid to generalized activity disorders and other adverse outcomes across the life course.” The study identified several factors that were associated with GAD among those with ADHD. Female respondents with ADHD had nearly five times higher odds of GAD, even after controlling for other characteristics. “ADHD has been severely underdiagnosed and under-

treated in girls and women,” said co-author Andie MacNeil, a recent Master of Social Work (MSW) graduate from the University of Toronto. “These findings suggest that women with ADHD may also be more susceptible to experiencing anxiety, emphasizing the need for greater support for women with ADHD.” Adults who had experienced adverse childhood experiences such as childhood sexual or physical abuse or chronic parental domestic violence were three times more likely to have a generalized anxiety disorder. Sixty percent of those with ADHD who had anxiety disorders had experienced at least one of these adverse childhood experiences. Other factors associated with GAD among adults with ADHD include having an income below $40,000, having fewer close relationships

and having a lifetime history of major depressive disorder. The odds of GAD among those with ADHD were sixfold for those with a lifetime history of major depressive disorder. “These results highlight the importance of screening for mental illness and addressing depressive symptoms when providing support to those with ADHD,” said Lauren Carrique, a recent graduate of University of Toronto’s MSW program and who is a social worker at Toronto General Hospital. “Individuals experiencing ADHD, GAD and depression are a particularly vulnerable subgroup that may need targeted outreach by health professionals.” Investigators examined a nationally representative sample of 6,898 respondents from the Canadian Community Health Survey-Mental Health aged 20-39, of whom

272 had ADHD and 682 had GAD. Unfortunately, the researchers did not have access to information on what treatments, if any, respondents with ADHD were receiving to address their anxiety. One particularly promising talk-based therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, also called CBT, has been shown to be very effective for improving anxiety, depression and ADHD symptoms. “It is crucial that those with ADHD who are struggling with mental health issues reach out for help from their family doctor or other mental health professional including social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists. Effective treatments, such as CBT, are available and these can dramatically improve one’s quality of life,” said Fuller-Thomson.

Myths and Facts About the Home Healthcare Nursing Industry

The above referenced project may be a federally funded activity authorized under the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974. All successful bidders must comply with federal labor standards, including the Davis-Bacon Act and the Copeland Anti-Kickback legislation; federal equal opportunity requirements; and Section 3 of the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968, as applicable.

(StatePoint) The last few years have put immense pressure on nurses to work longer, harder and with less staff. New research suggests that many nurses feel unseen, undervalued and unsupported, wondering if it’s worth it.

Minority/Women/Handicapped business owned enterprises (MBE/WBE/HBE) and Section 3 business concerns seeking opportunities under this Notice are encouraged to respond.

In a recent survey from National Nurses United, 68% of the nurses who responded said they have considered leaving their position.

The City of Detroit is AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER

“Unfortunately, many current nurses and those entering the field don’t explore careers in home healthcare,” says Jennifer Sheets, president and chief executive officer of Interim HealthCare Inc. “Home health nurses care for patients oneon-one in their home, where care is personal and nurses are empowered to improve patient outcomes. Plus, they have the flexibility to make their own schedule and the autonomy to be the nurse they were trained to be. Many fall in love with nursing all over again once they discover how rewarding a career in home healthcare can be.”

As part of its “We See You. We Celebrate You” campaign commemorating National Nurses Week (May 6-12), Interim HealthCare is shedding light on the benefits of working as a nurse in the home healthcare industry, and dispelling some common myths about this career path. Myth: Home healthcare means only working with seniors. Fact: Home health nurses work with people of all ages, including newborns and children. They offer a wide variety of services, from specialized personal care for children with disabilities to management for those who are dependent on devices such as ventilators, bi-pap, c-pap, trachs and apnea monitors.

Boysie Jackson, Chief Procurement Officer Office of Contracting & Procurement Office of the Chief Financial Officer

Myth: Home healthcare only involves working with very sick people. Fact: Home healthcare nursing services offer the full continuum of care and can include health assessments for blood pressure, glucose and postoperative recovery, wound care, IV management, medication administration and disease and treatment education. Myth: Home healthcare is just babysitting for adults. Fact: Home health RNs give clients of all ages (and their families) a sense of independence. They take an individualized approach to ensure that clients feel empowered at home, regardless of age, health or disability.

Myth: Home health clients won’t like having a stranger in their home. Fact: Home health workers and their clients can form strong bonds and feel like family, often attending birthday parties, weddings, graduations and other major life events. Myth: Home health means being siloed and working on one’s own. Fact: Home health RNs have a whole support team behind them ensuring they have the tools and skills to provide the client with what they need. There is also a wide array of training courses offered by home health organizations to expand skills. In addition to raising awareness about home healthcare careers this National Nurses Week, Interim HealthCare is also celebrating those in the field. Nurses and those exploring nursing can visit ihcnursesweek2022.com to explore careers, connect with other professionals, find messages of encouragement and enter for a chance to win prizes offering much-deserved “me time,” including a summer escape. “In spite of the many challenges healthcare professionals have faced over the last two years, nurses have remained strong,” says Sheets. “We believe that when a culture values, appreciates and advocates for nurses in a way that elevates their profession and rewards their work, such as in the home healthcare industry, nurses will not just get by, but thrive.”

Making a difference one card at a time Bank of America will become the first U.S.-based bank to transition all of our credit and debit plastic cards to at least 80% recycled plastic beginning in 2023 — an innovation that we expect will reduce single-use plastic by more than 235 tons per year. Not bad for a card that weighs only 0.18 ounces. So, with recycled plastic in your wallet and a digital wallet on your phone, you’re joining a movement to protect our planet.

“We’re working alongside our clients and partners here in Detroit to help shape the low-carbon, clean energy future we all want. As our clients reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we offer innovative ideas, our talented team and financing to help them meet their net-zero goals.”
