Happy Christmas It seems almost unbelievable that another year has passed, but here we are in December and, despite the challenges 2012 has thrown its way, the timber industry has survived, and even prospered, amongst the prevailing economic doom and gloom. We would like to thank all our customers for their help, support and business this year and to wish you all a very happy holiday and a prosperous and successful New Year.
Opening Hours The last day for placing standard delivery orders is Monday 17th December and premium next day delivery orders Wednesday 19th December, these will be delivered by Thursday 20th December. Orders received between Christmas and New Year will be delivered on Thursday 3rd and Monday 7th January respectively. Teknos offices will be stock auditing on the Friday 21st December and will close from 12pm and will reopen Wednesday 2nd January (Thursday 3rd January for Teknos Scotland).

Fire-retardant and weather resistant exterior cladding is attracting growing interest in Scandinavia. New building regulations, such as Finland’s National Building Code (E1), have improved the competitiveness of wood as a construction material and the use of timber, particularly on high rise buildings, is now growing significantly. An important factor in this growth has been the introduction of Teknos’ new fire-retardant coating TEKNOSAFE 2407, an intumescent primer, factory applied over TEKNOL AQUA 1410 wood preservative and topcoated with Aquatop opaque finishes.
Independent testing The Teknos coating system was tested at SP Trätek in Sweden, over fine sawn and planed spruce, and classified according to EN 13501-1 fire resistance standard EN 13823.
Cost-effective fire protection A development of two story flats located in Vantaa is typical of Finnish projects in Finland using the TEKNOSAFE 2407 fire-retardant system. Since the developer had planning consent to build a third storey the exterior had to be fire-protected.
Under the new fire regulations, fire protection of three to eight-storey buildings with exterior wooden cladding can be achieved in three ways: •
Using a fire-retardant coating system
•
Fitting the exterior cladding with sprinklers
•
Installing structural fire protection.
With structural fire protection, the wood is encased and the result, though effective, is not particularly architecturally pleasing! Similarly, it is not always desirable to have sprinkler systems visible in wood structures... and such systems can be expensive. Fire retardant coating systems therefore often offer the ideal balance between aesthetics, cost and performance. On the Vantaa project, fire protecting the exterior cladding with TEKNOSAFE 2407 cost €35,000 compared with a sprinkler system costing €80,000. With interest growing throughout Europe in the performance and construction speed of multi storey wooden buildings, Teknos expects to see significant growth in sales of TEKNOSAFE 2407 coating systems on an ever wider range of timber substrates.

Understanding Fire Testing SBI fire-class test method The Single Burning Item (SBI) test, classifies all building products,except floorings, into fire classes A2, B, C and D by assessing their reaction to fire when exposed to a flame from a specified fire source (propane gas burner).
In addition to the it’s fire class, the material is classified by smoke production (s1 - s3; where 1 has least smoke generation); and the presence of flaming droplets (d0 - d2; where d0 signifies not flaming droplets or particles).
The flame is directed at the bottom edge of the tested specimen. Heat release and combustion gases are measured and physical changes are classified by visual observation.

Buildings are divided into three fire classes: P1, P2 and P3 (P1 being the most demanding).

The classification of building products is denoted by the following markings: A1, A2, B, C, D, E, and F.

Building products are divided into classes, on the basis of how they contribute to ignition and the spread of fire, smoke production and the generation of flaming droplets.

Smoke production and the generation of flaming droplets are expressed by the additional markings ‘s’ and ‘d’. The classification for smoke production is s1, s2 and s3 and that for flaming droplets d0, d1 and d2.

Water based solution for interior wood TEKNOCOAT AQUA 1330 offers a water based alternative to traditional acid curing and pre cat lacquers, matching, and in most cases outperforming, their resistance to water, grease and stains.
Available in colourless and custom shades, TEKNOCOAT AQUA 1330 can be applied by brush or spray to both softwoods and hardwoods, and can be used in a dual-layer system as both primer and topcoat.

New warning label regulations The ‘CLP directive’, which implements UN recommendations for global classification and labelling of chemicals, is currently being introduced in Europe. The changes will see the old orange warning symbols replaced by new, international pictograms on a white background in a red triangular frame. Paints and varnishes have until June 2015 to comply, so over the next three years, Teknos will progressively introduce the new labelling scheme on its paint packaging. Safety Data Sheets will also be progressively revised to include both the new symbols and additional information required by the REACH regulations.

W12: Working with Wood October’s W12 Building Show attracted over 8000 small and medium sized joinery companies to a 4 day exhibition of products, machinery and equipment in Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre.
