Omaha Summer Concert Tradition “Playing with Fire” Moving to Turner Park
Turner BARK
Midtown Crossing is thrilled to welcome Playing with Fire, Omaha’s sizzling, free summer concert tradition, to an expansive, new venue: seven-acre Turner Park with its iconic Pavilion and permanent stage. “This allows us to continue our legacy, and I think it will be a great fan experience,” said Jeff Davis, Playing with Fire founder. Featuring the best in blues, soul, funk, R & B, and rock, Playing with Fire spent the majority of its first 10 years at Lewis & Clark Landing on Omaha’s riverfront, attracting crowds of up to 10,000 people. The switch to Turner Park allows the 501(c)(3) non-profit to showcase the same great local, national and international acts with less expense and logistical complexity.
FEATURED STORY
“We sought out a place with a covered stage, the space and amenities to accommodate us. Midtown Crossing stepped up with its Pavilion at Turner Park and has basically become a partner in the show,” Davis said. “Playing with Fire is a natural addition to our outstanding lineup of free community entertainment here at Midtown Crossing and the Pavilion at Turner Park. We’re ecstatic that we can help keep the Playing with Fire tradition alive in Omaha for its long-time fans and the new fans to come,” said Molly Skold, vice president marketing and communications, East Campus Realty, LLC, the Mutual of Omaha subsidiary that owns Midtown Crossing. A free concert experience, Playing with Fire’s 2014 schedule will play out over the course of two Thursday nights: June 26 and July 3, starting at 5:30 p.m. Read More on Page 3

All of the buildings at Midtown Crossing are equipped with a state-of-theart fire control detection and alarm system. At certain times throughout the year, these devices need to be tested to ensure that they are functioning properly. Your Property Management and Residential Management teams will inform you in advance of any scheduled fire control testing date. In addition, the contractor doing the testing or the Security team will make an announcement over the building’s P.A. system that it is only a test and not to panic. There are times when the fire control system actually goes into alarm. If that occurs residents, retailers and visitors should listen to the audible alarm instructions being broadcasted over the P.A. system and do as instructed. If the Security team and the Fire Dept. determine that it is a false alarm, an announcement will be given over the P.A. system stating that it is a false alarm and that you can return to your residence. As always, be safe and do not assume that it is a false alarm, until you are actually advised of such.

Omaha Summer Concert Tradition “Playing with Fire” Moving to Turner Park (cont from page 1) June 26: Opening act: Hector Anchondo Supporting act: Ben Poole Headliner: Jonas & the Massive Attraction July 3: Opening act: Mojo Bag Supporting act: Randy Oxford Band Headliner: The Madame Louise Project, featuring Lulu Hughes Davis, the former CEO of Davis Erection Company, Inc., started Playing with Fire in 2004 with a small board of volunteers to build community through free, high-quality, family-oriented musical entertainment. “We all love the music, and having a free show where everyone can participate is what’s really important to us,” Davis said. Also important is fostering community involvement. Playing with Fire supports local charities, such as The Food Bank for the Heartland and Parkinson’s Health Development, and cultivates music education by providing performance and fundraising opportunities to students of BluesEd, a non-profit youth artist development program. Playing with Fire concerts are made possible with the support of the Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, the Douglas County Visitor Improvement Fund, the City of Omaha, corporate and private sponsorships, in-kind donations and volunteers. PICKING UP SOME PRODUCE? GraB A BOOK, TOO. Story provided by wowt.com by Chase Moffitt There’s been a new addition to the midtown grocery store Wohlner’s, a bookcase, which offers customers a free book to pick up or drop off. Owner Mike Schwartz tells WOWT 6 News thanks to nearby Hutch furniture, the donated bookcase could house the grocery store’s reading section. It’s a recent addition and the idea is that anyone who wants to borrow a book can do so, just bring it back later. The whole thing is free and on the honor system. “Books are fun, they’re enjoyable to read and there’s always a lot of extra books lying around. After you read a book , most of the time you don’t want to keep it, so this way everybody can enjoy it and pass books on” Schwartz said. The bookshelf has been in place for about a week and Schwartz says it’s already a big hit.
