Much More Than Just Good Genetics by Tim McCray Tim@ABPmag.com
photos by Grandvale Creative unless noted otherwise
Ryan Topp told me as we were interviewing for this article,
“You can go anywhere in this country and find good genetics.” True, there are many in the cattle industry that provide just that. Topp Herefords of Grace City, North Dakota produces deep, uniform, dependable genetics that excel. But, their program is so much more than just modern, powerful, Hereford seedstock. Through visits to Topp Herefords and lengthy phone conversations with several of their partners and buyers, I can’t help but feel like I’m on a visionary sort of journey. This is more than just good genetics. Entrepreneur, Visionary, Committed, Consistent, Predictable, Quality, Progressive... have all been used to describe Ryan & Prairie Topp and the team at Topp Herefords. After conversations with friends, relatives and business associates, I’ve added humble, integrity, values, spiritual and focused. I could stop right there, but if there is anything I want you to understand about Topp Herefords it is those words. All of those work into a great description of anyone to do business with, and even better words for a friendship.

As I’m walking around the ranch with Prairie on a warm day in October discussing their lives, their program, their livelihood, I’m honestly a little nervous about committing to something that I’m not entirely comfortable with (writing). But there’s also a calmness that surrounds our conversation. It’s her composure. She’s very confident in her words, but also humble. She assures me it’s not her, but all Ryan behind what is Topp Herefords. I got the exact same feeling in talking with Ryan the other day on the phone. Ryan’s voice is also fearless, but not overconfident. He’s got a strong set of values. He’s extremely visionary in his endeavors. Almost like an artist approaches a piece of music, or a sculpture – in the sense they are taking away the things that don’t belong. He tells me how much Prairie and the rest of the team do for Topp Herefords. It’s a little strange to me that each of them credit the other with the force behind the drive. They’re both quick to point out that this is a team effort. Aside from Ryan and Prairie, there are also their 3 kids: Lauren, Mariah & Logan. Plus three full time employees on the ranch: Keith Herberg, Riley Ehlers, and their newest addition Cord Laplant. Herberg started out as an intern at Topp Herefords and hasn’t left. Riley came a couple years later, and Cord just started this summer. Besides promoting a strong team environment where each employee is responsible for key areas of ranch management and is

process of heading to another.
Ryan and the contract employees are busy this time of year seeing old, new and potential customers. Ryan explains, “Our goal is to physically see their cow herd. We find out In addition to the ranch what their goals are. We find crew, there are 3 remote team out where they want to be in a members that help manage cattle procurement and customer year or two with their cow herd. We find out what their needs service. Their goal is to visit the ranches of each bull customer, old are for marketing their cattle, and then we offer them options and new. In fact, as I was speakthat we feel are the best fit for ing with Ryan the other day just before noon, he was traveling and their marketing equation.” He had visited 4 of his customers so also adds “I think it should be far that morning and was in the

mandatory if you are a bull provider that you get off your ranch, go to the producers’ places, see their cattle, and let them tell you what their needs are. Listen to your producers, then you form your business model as a seedstock provider.” A business model that has proven itself to be successful. That has put Topp Herefords where they are today, amongst the elite in their sector. I’ll point out here, that the previous paragraph was pretty much verbatim. The only point where Ryan talked about himself was an opinion, other than that it was WE as referring to the entire team that make up Topp Herefords. At this point I disagree with Ryan. “What do you mean?” he said. “I don’t believe Topp Herefords is you, or your team. Topp Herefords was, and will surely continue to be, built by its clients.” Customers who are growing in numbers are also quick to offer their perspectives. Scott Ruland of New Town, N.D., who has been a TH customer for about 15 years says, “I’ve never known a bull seller to stand behind his bulls as well as Ryan does. We’ve been a repeat customer because I believe in the programs he has put together.”
10
Scott raises nothing but baldy cattle from Angus cows, but that hasn’t always been the case. “When we started putting Hereford bulls on our Angus cows, one of them was from Topp Herefords,” he explained. “Ryan stopped by our place and he didn’t like how the bull had matured. He wanted us to cut his head off, so he could replace him. That’s how our relationship started.” Scott continued, “We kept going with baldy cattle because they were growing better, and I get a health kick with the F1 cross. I don’t have to doctor them as much.” Then, Scott said, he started doing the math. “We can survive on that black calf, but I would be giving up pounds and a premium. The heifer bonus I get when I’m selling them back to Topp Herefords for the same price or even a little better than the steers is what makes a difference to my bottom line. If I wasn’t making money at it, I wouldn’t be back.” So, Scott and Ryan sat down to determine how Scott could keep going in the program as efficiently as possible. Enter Ellingson Angus. “That’s why it works for me. I can source good cows from Ellingson Angus genetics to keep my black herd going. When Topp Herefords comes in and sorts through our baldy calves for the feeder program, we have a uniform, high-quality herd, so almost all of our calves go. We don’t have a hodgepodge herd. That’s the reason it works.”
American Beef Producer
January 2021
Ryan values the benefit of Heterosis. “If you’re not taking advantage of cross breeding, you can’t complain about the price of feeder cattle. Because it must be enough if you’re willing to leave 30 or more pounds off your calf by not cross breeding.” Another operation that has found value in working with Topp Herefords is the Diamond Cross Ranch in Montana. Managers, David and Tracie Budd, commented “We used to have the lowest calf weights on the ranch, and ever since we started using the Hereford bulls, our weights have been above everyone else.” But it’s not just the genetics. “Ryan is the only producer that has come to look at our cattle, look at our grass, and look at what we have for an environment. Topp Herefords is interested in making people successful.” Topp Herefords goal for the past 20 years has been to provide a return on investment for their buyers. “We’ve refined that process for years to create a system that helps improve the profitability of our customers’ operations. We really want to create options that help impact their bottom line.”
Marketing Programs The first opportunities for TH bull-buyers to choose from are the feeder calf marketing options off the ranch. These help capture the added value of your TH-sired calf crop through a variety of feeder programs. They’re working with 4 feedlots at the moment, and soon will be adding a fifth.

From there, Ellingson Angus joined Topp Herefords in a baldy heifer development program, which allowed the families to expand their seedstock offerings to commercial cattle producers. By adding Ellingson-sired, straight-Angus females bred to Topp Herefords bulls, producers could maximize the number of steers and heifers that qualify for the Topp Herefords marketing programs, while ensuring a source of proven, high-quality genetics for straight-Angus females.

Today, the Ellingson Angus bred heifer program and the Topp Herefords baldy program work together seamlessly. Topp Herefords has a strong belief in having a consistent source of high-end Angus females. Ellingson Angus buys back firstcut, replacement-quality, Ellingson-sired, Angus females from its bull customers, breeds those females to Topp Herefords bulls, which, in turn, are offered to Topp Herefords customers seeking to maintain an Angus cowherd. By supplying top-quality Angus heifers to Topp Herefords bull customers, the crossbreeding system
E
llingson Angus started in 1995 with the marriage of Chad Ellingson and Julie Schaff. Prior to that, Chad had begun what would become a nearly 20-year career in the AI industry with Genex CRI. Angus is in their blood. To say they’re involved in the breed and the business is like saying Garth Brooks or Willie Nelson sing a little. In fact, I may nominate them for the next episode of “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.” Their list of accomplishments and accolades are probably too many to list in a page, but I admit that may be fun to do a bit later. Chad has “traded places” for a day with a chef at a local restaurant for a Certified Angus Beef promotion. He’s also been a judge not only at the local level, but the national level and in numerous stock shows. Julie’s been well embedded into the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association for a quarter of a century. Today, she serves as the organization’s chief lobbyist, spokesperson and administrator. Let me just wrap this up and say that, if there are two better faces for not only Angus but ranchers in general in the Upper Midwest, I haven’t met them. To top that off, they’re also two of the nicest, most down-to-earth people you’ll ever meet. The Ellingson Angus and Topp Herefords families have been friends for many years. They both have a strong commitment to their customers and supporting the genetics that their customers get from each of them, respectively. Their first business project together was marketing registered Angus and Hereford cattle to Kazakhstan.

is simplified. Topp Herefords customers maximize the number of heifers and steers in their herd that qualify for TH marketing programs and ensure a source of proven, high-quality genetics for their straight-Angus females. “This system can only work with front-end cattle and also must be built by front-end people,” Ryan Topp says. “Quite simply, Ellingson Angus fits the bill on both fronts.” As I mentioned in the Topp article (if you haven’t read that yet – spoiler alert), both of these programs are committed to customer service. So, both of them spend quite a bit of time visiting with their customers and finding out what their needs are. “We buy the top end of our bull customers’ Angus heifers and we cull them pretty aggressively, even after spring breeding time,” Chad Ellingson goes on to say. “We do another sort on the females prior to delivery as well, so we only ship the best of the best bred Angus females.” This creates a consistent, quality source of replacement heifers and a supply chain that many cattle ranchers have looked for, but not found until this Topp/Ellingson partnership was formed. “We believe in the cattle we are producing and stand behind them,” Chad Ellingson adds. The Ellingson Angus team is stringent in producing maternal genetics emphasizing foot quality, udder quality and doability. That’s important to their bull and registered female customers, as well as those purchasing the Angus genetics they provide that go on to make cows for Topp Herefords bull customers. Both families strongly believe in the genetics they are producing, but, beyond that, both want to make sure that their customers are taken care of well beyond sale day.

year and purchasing 15R - the high selling bull that year. That turned out to be a really good investment. Shortly thereafter a company in Australia inquired about semen availability. Ryan sent them to Augie, and through the sales of semen Augie had already made his investment back, yet not one prodigy had hit the ground. Topp Herefords wouldn’t accept any return on that either. “He’s your Bull, you bought him.” was what The most recent development is a retained Ryan responded with. And that’s exactly what Topp ownership option new in 2020. Ryan says that Herefords wants: to know that while nothing is persome of their clients were “leaving money on fect, at the end of the day they did everything in their the table by not retaining ownership to the power to bring you more value. “Everything is justified kill floor.” So Topp Herefords is working to by return on investment” Ryan explains. “When you’re introduce their bull customers to the option looking at where you are buying your seedstock, where of retaining ownership further down the food you can get that best return on your calves should lead chain. Ryan adds, “We will do whatever it takes you to where to buy your bulls.” to makes sure that our customers have the best options available.” The second marketing option for TH-sired cattle is the Baldy Heifer buyback program. In conjunction with Pitz Farms in Iowa, Topp Herefords buys back about 1500 head annually of first cut, replacement-quality open heifers from their bull clients to breed. And the baldy heifer program is expanding.
Another TH Customer for 15+ years, Augie Williams of Rushford, MN, said he was referred from fellow cattlemen to check into the Topp Herefords program when he was looking at getting some good breeding stock for his own herd. He made an inquiry, received the TH sale catalog for that year, and had circled a few bulls and heifers he was interested in. When Ryan and Augie ended up speaking over the phone, Ryan suggested Augie not purchase a few on his list as they may not be the best fit for his objectives. Augie admits that in the years of his own production sales, he never suggested someone not bid on an animal. He ended up attending the sale that

Evolution of a Program The operation has evolved over multiple generations. As you pull into Topp Herefords, the first thing you notice is the red barn that dwarfs all other buildings on the property. That barn is one of the few buildings that remain from when Ryan’s grandfather, Woodrow, first established Topp Herefords in 1945. Ryan’s father, Merlin, managed the operation until he died when Ryan was only 7. The registered herd was dispersed. However Ryan’s mother, Kathy, kept the ranch and the commercial herd going. When Ryan was still in High School he began slowly purchasing registered Herefords, primarily out of Canada, to start his own herd. “I had a personal desire to expose and promote the benefits of Hereford genetics in the beef industry. I committed to that goal when I was about 16. I focused on really culling hard and scaling everything back until only the superior genetics were left standing. I gutted out anything that didn’t serve or benefit.” Off in the distance behind the big red barn you can see the sale facility. After years of hauling bulls to Bismarck and renting a sale facility, Topp Herefords made the decision to build closer to home. Directly behind me is a working facility that they describe as a difficult decision to make because it wasn’t going to provide a return on their investment. This is one of those cases where they wouldn’t fully realize the return until it was built. Winter can easily bring temperatures into the negative double digits and with a wind chill factor of -60 and even below. Then there is

the rain, mud, wind and snow. I can recall one trip where I experienced a good 4” snowfall with temps in the high 20‘s, and that was early October. The new working facility neutralized conditions, so weather was no longer a factor. It made a huge difference for the employees, for the vets and the embryologist during breeding. Ryan also pointed out that their team became much more efficient. “It‘s been one of the best investments we‘ve ever made. When you take good care of your crew and your your cattle, it affects the quality of your program.”
he was dealing with, as Ryan quitely stood on the side and observed. Augie did most of the phone conversations and final arrangements with Logan as well. Logan explained to me that his parents tell him he can pick any future he wants. He is only expected to learn the business now so that he can choose to come back if he decides to. “Buying my own cattle has taught me a lot about financial responsibility and organization and has given me an understanding of ownership.” From working with cattle to visiting bull customers, he values all that goes into being a rancher and seedstock producer. The future of Topp Herefords is looking bright as “There are countless jobs on the ranch that I enjoy dowell. The strong work ethic and commitment to exceling such as vaccinating cattle, putting up hay, and doing lence is transferring over to their children. Their oldest, chores. Although those are critical jobs on the ranch, Lauren, is currently enrolled as a senior at UND preparthe thing I enjoy doing most is delivering cattle, where ing for PA school. Mariah, a freshman at NDSU, is going I get the chance to visit our customers and get to know to their educational leadership program, as she‘s looking them and their cattle.” One thing is certain, Logan is at being a superintendent. They both have their own certainly carrying on his family values. He already credits cattle at the ranch and come home to work as much as his parents for everything he‘s accomplished with his parents and understands the value of the team at Topp possible as it‘s their cattle paying for their education. Herefords.
Logan is 16, a junior in High School and, like his Dad at this age, has started focusing on the future. He has recently expanded his inventory with a herd from Augie Williams. Augie stressed that as they spent the entire day looking at cattle in his pastures it was Logan

A P ADVICE COLUMN by Chip Kemp, Director, ASA and IGS Commercial and Industry Operations American Simmental Association
An Insurance Policy worth the Premium Soon you’ll be on calving watch and you’ll pass some time searching the Amazon app on your phone for the best throw lever out there for the new high-powered scope you got for Christmas. When doing so, will you concern yourself with the tensile strength of the carbon filaments within the various levers? Likely not, you’ll seek out a product that is guaranteed to work, appears to have solid customer service and engineering behind it, and has a price point you can live with. Or Spring will one day arrive and you’ll recall (only when the grass is six inches tall) that, back in the infamous year of 2020, you ran the old weed eater over with the side-by-side in a fit of rage because it teased the weeds rather than cut them. When you run to town to buy its successor, are you going to be comparing engine outputs, shaft lengths, and shoulder strap comfort of ten different brands? Some will, but many will simply go to the retailer they’ve always trusted to solve problems and select from their assortment. The process will likely be quick, and you’ll be back dressing up the yard in no time. When a beef consumer (OUR CUSTOMER) selects their next grilling target from the beef counter they already assume the grocer purchased a product that has 1) documented wholesomeness and safety (USDA-inspected), 2) a quantifiable and predictable eating experience (quality grades), and 3) an identifiable selling point. Mind you, that if you asked most consumers about the metrics associated with HACCP or Critical Control Points, or about the balance of marbling, bone ossification, and lean color and their impact on palatability, or even the awareness of current beef cutouts and market trends they would admit they haven’t any idea about these things. What they know is this. Every other Sunday afternoon for the last six months they’ve come to this meat counter. They bought various products including beef on each of those trips. Each time, with appropriate guidance from reading materials or store employees, they went home with a product that met or exceeded 22
their expectations. And because history told them that the experience would be rewarding they came back. The grocer will know when the experience was not rewarding. Because they simply buy something else or somewhere else. In other words – they don’t come back. The point? The science and informatics behind each of these products and experiences is crucial. The manufacturers and retailers of these products rely on this knowledge to build something that has customer appeal and will meet or exceed the expectation of the buyer given the price point they are willing to pay. AND, the product will not be returned or experience a failure that requires returning the money to the buyer. The firms involved know some customers will thoroughly study their options and thus the facts and specifics need to be industry-leading and readily available. These firms also know that a great many customers do not want to bother with digging into the details. They came to buy a product with the valid expectation that it would live up to the claims of the seller. The data and facts are just as real in this case, just more so to the manufacturer and seller to ensure they live up to customer demands. You already know these things. So why take up precious real estate in this publication stating what is already intuitive? Because way too frequently I hear the following statement… “My bull customers don’t care about numbers.” Really? Your customers are seeking uncertainty? I doubt that. No question that in a very small percentage of cases, there are commercial buyers who are so price-conscious that there isn’t a single metric that matters to them beyond cost. The three unknown bulls that got dropped off at the sale barn with their ultimate destination unknown – either ground beef or another pasture – are a testament to this. They run through directly prior to the “special” cow sale. And sure enough, someone plans to take them home. Might even put them on heifers just to roll the dice since it is difficult to spend time in Vegas at present. Let’s exclude this clientele. (continued on next page)
American Beef Producer
January 2021
A P My assertion is this. There are a larger and larger number of commercial buyers who are seeking EPD and Index knowledge to help them eke out a profit for their family. Those folks demand numbers today. They will demand much more tomorrow. If your kids plan to stay in the business this is simply a fact. However, there are still a very large number of serious buyers who would rather defer the investigation of facts and the details of the manufacturer‘s process to you, their seedstock provider. In this case the responsible use of credible EPDs and Indexes are just as crucial. But more of the burden falls on you. The genetic predictors become your “insurance policy” as you look to provide the bulls that best complement their cow herd and best match their management and marketing practices. Let’s face it, if they keep a lot of heifers, the more confident
Protected Processing! -
you are of their calving ease the easier you’ll sleep when they load those bulls. At the same time, if the customer feeds out a large portion of their terminal calves and you just pawned off some bulls on them with poor marbling genetics how many times are they coming back? Every industry has its own jargon. Its own language. And understanding the phrases and semantics is crucial. Ag is no different. When that potential buyer suggests that he doesn’t put too much pressure on the numbers, what he is likely saying is that you as a seedstock provider better put even more reliance on great science and solid genetic predictors. The buyer is essentially saying he isn’t taking the blame for any bad decisions. He will rest those purely and squarely in the lap of his bull provider. And then he is likely to ask, “Didn’t you even look at the numbers before you sold him to me?”
A Cowman’s Best Friend at Calving Time!
Marvin Schultis, NE - "It works great! Safe and very easy to process calves. Would not be without it! Thanks for the great workmanship." Craig Oceanak, WY - "We calve range cows on rough ground. Catcher is very valuable for a one-person outfit!"

ALL PURPOSE MORE PROFIT
The American Simmental Association’s $All Purpose Index ($API) predicts cow herd profitability while keeping pressure on terminal traits. And data from the last two decades show it’s working. Better genetics translate to increased profits for bulls used to sire replacement heifers and harvest remaining calves. Build a herd that works as hard as you do.

Torgerson Ranch. Lyman, Utah by Derek Sample

On the way back home from our Fall Cattle and Client tours (see Nov/Dec issue, page 30), I stopped to visit with Jeff Loveless. Jeff owns the Loveless Gelbvieh Ranch in Spanish Fork, Utah and serves on the board of the American Gelbvieh Association. What started out as an interview/photography stop for a couple hours, ended up being a continuous and extraordinary adventure that lasted 48 hours. Jeff and I hit it off and I was talked into staying longer since there was so much more for me to see, and see we did. We toured more of his land, watered his heifers in Fillmore, traveled north to visit Joe of the famous Sacco Brothers Ranch, we drank whiskey while watching late night presidential election results and there was the visit with Liz and Wyatt Torgerson in Lyman, who are watching over Jeff ’s prize bulls. To say I was impressed with Liz and Wyatt’s operation would be an understatement. From Wyatt‘s expertise and skilled craftmanship to Liz‘s boundless energy and proficient management skills, the cattle here couldn’t be happier. They both run a feedlot and a cow/calf operation for various clients. Meeting Liz as she jumps out of a John Deere, I’m guessing she has done that since she was 5. It turns out I guessed right. She’s a total pro moving about 48
their ranch and she runs it like a swiss watch. This place is organized. As I was given a tour of their property by Liz, Wyatt updated Jeff on the status of his bulls that are in their care. I was rather intrigued with their operation, so I asked Liz a week later if I could interview her. Below she shares some insight as to how she became such a strong yet humble player in the art of cattle farming. - Hi Liz, tell us about yourself and how you got started I grew up in Grover, which is 20 miles SE of here. My grandparents raised my brothers and I on a small farm where we were immersed in agriculture. Wyatt and I purchased 20 acres of farm ground in Lyman the the first year we were married. Eventually we were able to purchase more land as it became available. We also lease property from the land owners in the area. Good farm land is a hot commodity around here. - I understand you got started as a feedlot? No, we started farming first. After we built our home we worked to build corrals. In order to afford the materials for the feedlot pens, we purchased pole permits from the forest service and logged the poles to build fences. We saved up to buy railroad ties, gates, and other materials

we needed to complete the feedlot. Wyatt found an old set of truck scales and built those into the feedlot so that we can weigh calves and cows as they come in and out of the feedlot. We also got them state certified so people who bring their calves can ship them directly from here after they are sold. The feedlot took several years to build, and is still a work in progress. - Then what happened? Wyatt worked as a cowboy for a local ranch while we started our family. I continued my education, but because we live in such a rural area, it took quite some time for me to finally earn the Bachelors degree I needed in order to teach school. When my youngest child was three, I finally graduated from Southern Utah University. I worked as a paraprofessional for a couple years while I finished my degree, which gave me much needed hands on experience in the classroom. I was lucky, and got a teaching job the fall after I graduated. I taught 3rd grade for 5 years, 2nd grade for 3 years, and then 5th grade for 3 years. During this time, our kids grew and so did our feedlot clientele and farming acres. Wyatt was able to resign from his job as a cowboy and stay here to run things. - Why did you decide to resign from teaching? Several years ago, we decided to purchase a bull wagon and flat bed semi trailer. We thought Wyatt could haul
cows locally as kind of a side job, and possibly haul a few local flat bed loads as well. It worked out really well for us. A few years later we met some people who buy hay in Tennessee and decided to sell our hay out there. When that happened we knew Wyatt would have to be gone quite a bit, so I decided to resign so that I could be around to take care of the feedlot and other things around our farm. - How is it working the feedlot while Wyatt is gone? It is definitely a change from teaching, but I enjoy it. The job puts me out of my comfort zone daily. I ask a lot of questions. If Wyatt is on the road at least he is only a phone call away, and helps me through whatever tasks I may have questions about. Most of the producers we feed for bring their calves here right after they bring them home from the mountain. Then we feed them until they are ready to sell. Others bring their bull calves and heifer replacements here to be fed and get them acclimated to the elevation. They PAP well at 7,100 feet here in Lyman, so they are a good purchase for breeding stock. I worry about all of the animals we care for. I don’t know everything, so I rely on Wyatt’s advice and also ask for help from my brother in law, Kyle quite often. I’m surprised he’ll still answer the phone when I call, hahaha.

- Did you ever raise your own cattle? We used to raise bred heifers. We would purchase calves from local producers because we knew they had good breeding in their cattle. Then Wyatt would AI them and we would sell them the following year as bred heifers. We had approximately 100 bred heifers and then the market just went under. We couldn’t afford to sell them for less than we had into them, so we purchased the ones we couldn’t sell for a decent price from ourselves. There was no question we were going to have to change our operation, luckily things worked out. That‘s how we got our little herd of cows. - Have you ever been involved in calving? No, not really. I’d help Wyatt when he worked at the cattle ranch from time to time, but he was the one who knew what needed to be done. It took a lot of quick planning in order to get prepared to calve that many heifers, so we designed and put together a calving barn out of storage units. It went up around the holidays and then pretty soon I started getting baby calves. I had Wyatt in my ear on the phone and we worked through it together. He had to come up with tricky little ways for me to feel better about things and be able to deal with the occasional mad heifer. The first year I worried a lot, and I still do, but it gets a little easier each year. Just like anyone who is calving heifers, I get up several times during the night and check on them. I don’t want something to die because I missed something. When Wyatt has to be gone, I’m lucky to have people who I can January 2021
call on to help if there is something I can’t handle. - So you are a pro at calving now... No way! I’m as humble as you get with this job, especially about calving. I’m more confident than that first year, but I’ll take help when I can get it. I’ll call Kyle sometimes saying, “there’s a crazy one, I need some help!” I’ve learned that if I’m scared or nervous around the heifer, they are harder to deal with. I think the way you treat a heifer after she has her first calf can shape her attitude, so I try to be as calm as I can and give her as much space as I can. If they can have their baby and have a good experience they can be trouble free after that. We also have great veterinaries around here too that are always willing to come help or give advice. - Do you run any of your own cattle at your feedlot? We only own approximately 50 head of our own cows. They start calving around the first of January each year. Our cows graze our fields in the fall and are in pastures in the summer. During the winter months we keep them in our field below the feedlot. They come in to eat and drink but can have their calves outside of the corral. I think this helps the calves stay healthier. We do feed our own calves for a few months after they are weaned, but the majority of the calves here are not ours. They belong to other producers who pay us to feed them for various reasons. I try to be

careful about what I feed them. We’ve come up with a feed recipe that seems to be working well, and so far our clients have been happy with the results. - How many head are out there now? When our feedlot is full, we have over 450 head. It keeps us very busy. Usually the feedlot is empty by the end of March. That is when we start to do our spring work, like maintenance, planting crops, servicing equipment, fixing pipe, etc. - Where is the land you farm located? All of the land we own and the land we lease is located in Lyman. We farm the property below our house, but also own other properties closer to town. We lease the property near the airport and other farms in between. - How has the weather been lately? It’s been too good. We need snow in a bad way. I am hoping it really kicks in and we get a lot of snow in the mountains. Our county relies on snow that is collected in reservoirs and then used for irrigation. We’ve been having really warm days and then cold nights. When that happens and calves have just been weaned, it is hard on them. We have to watch the calves extra close so we can spot them if they get sick and take care of them. - Are your children working on the farm? My kids have always had responsibilities and chores. They are almost grown now though. My daughter is teaching kindergarten and expecting a baby soon. We are super excited about being grandparents! Even with her busy schedule she finds time to help out after work and on her days off. My oldest son graduated high school last spring. He works for a local construction company and is often out of town during the week, but we always have plenty of jobs lined up for him on the weekends. My youngest son is still in high school. He helps daily with watering cows and feeding horses etc. We definitely couldn’t do this without them. When Wyatt and I look back at the time we’ve spent raising our kids, we can’t say we took them on many fancy vacations, but we can say we’ve tried our best to teach them to work. We all worked together and we’ve made some great memories. I know they get tired of it sometimes, and that is understandable. They don’t get much of a break on their time off, but we need their help so they do it anyway. - That‘s quite the routine and science you maintain We aren’t big operators, but it still seems like there‘s tons of work to be done. It doesn’t matter what season, there is always more work and new challenges. We definitely are in a unique situation, especially since we started shipping our hay back east. The downfall is that Wyatt has to be gone a lot during the winter months in order to get the hay we’ve 52
contracted back east. It takes one week per load of hay, but overall it is working out. His days home are spent helping me and catching up on farm and feedlot work. There is always work to do. - I understand you just ran for school board Yes I did, and I guess I’ll be serving for the next two years. I taught school for 13 years and I just loved my kids. I put a lot of work into becoming an educator, and it was a hard decision to make when I decided to resign. I hope that while serving on the school board, my teaching experience and education can be put to use in a new way. I’m excited to see a new side of the education system in my community. - I bet they won‘t know what hit them Well I don’t know, I guess we will see. I hope I can help make some decisions that will be good for our kids, teachers and staff. In all districts there are those who are there for their own agendas, but that isn’t me. As a teacher, I was able to help kids everyday and I miss that. Now that our lives have turned me away from my teaching career, this is a way for me to serve my community and help kids in a different way. I‘m honored that I’ve been elected. - Then what is your typical day like? I wake up early. I love the early mornings and I love my coffee! I’m usually on the phone with Wyatt first thing, helping him find the cheapest fuel prices along his route, and going over whats on the agenda for the day. I also like to try to get business paperwork over with in the morning- it isn’t my favorite thing at all. Then I’m out with the cattle by daylight. I worry some nights and am eager to make sure they are all ok. I know I left them ok last night, but are they still ok? It’s always a worry. I kick up feed at the feedlot first and watch for any sick calves. If some are sick, I pull them out and doctor them. Then I tend to our cows. Right now they are in our fields. I break ice and water them. Our heifers have already calved, so I check on the babies everyday. I make sure to see each one. When we get a lot of calves, I take a list and mark them off. Sometimes the mothers are big milkers, so the calves can get the scours. If so, It’s critical to catch it quick so they don’t become dehydrated and die. This year our first baby had a hard birth, so I have to take extra time with him. He was too big for his mama, and it was too cold. I messed up and should have had them in the barn. I feel super bad that the little guy has to go through all of it. After tending him, I come back to the feedlot and it’s time to bring hay and feed up from the barns and start mixing. I am usually out until around 6 each day. Then I get to enjoy spending time with my kids

that are home. - Do you feel your kids are going to work their way back to the ranch full time? As of now, Wyatt and I feel it is important for them to do their own thing and find what they really want to do in life. They are all super independent. Of course we wouldn’t work our asses off to build this place if we weren’t hoping they would want to take over one day. Nothing has been given to any of us, and I think that is why we appreciate it. If our kids want to buy the farms from us one day, they will have first chance. - Is there anything else you would like to say? We are so lucky to live in a community that is full of such good people. There‘s always someone who is willing to help if we need it. We are not big operators, but we are always learning new things and willing to accept new challenges. We are just like the other farmers and ranchers, we all wake up and work our asses off everyday.
