24Q for 2024

Interview & artwork by Derek Sample. Derek@ABPmag.com Thedford, Nebraska

Derek: First, I'm curious about your Bar None Hat Company. It sounds fun & rather fascinating. I'm sure you must enjoy it. Kaycee: 2023 marked my 20th year, and yes, I really enjoy it. D: How did you get started making hats? Is your family into hat-making? Kaycee: I'm the sixth generation raised on a Colorado ranch, always surrounded by cattlemen and cowboys. Significantly, I have two aunts involved in hat-making - one formerly owned Greeley Hat Works in Greeley, Colorado, and the other runs Cowboy Up Hatters in Denver. Breaking into this trade, especially as a woman in a predominantly male-dominated field, was very challenging. I tried an office job post-college but quickly realized it wasn't for me. I've always been intrigued by hatting, but finding equipment and a mentor was difficult. I didn't want to bother my aunts, but after having some doors slammed, it couldn’t have worked out any better with my aunts teaching and helping me find the right equipment. Initially, it wasn't a complete hat shop, but I learned the trade with my Aunt Susie's guidance. Now, 20 years later, I've transformed a hobby into a thriving business. D: It's impressive how your business is growing. From what I gathered on your website, your 22

customer base is expanding, and you're trying to keep up with the demand. Kaycee: The balance between ranching, raising kids, and managing the Hat Shop, along with my involvement in our community, is quite challenging. I feel blessed, though it can be overwhelm-

ing at times. But you work through it. D: Circling back a bit, could you tell us more about your ranch in Colorado and your family's heritage there? Kaycee: As I said earlier, I'm a sixth-generation rancher to be raised on a ranch in Colorado, with a history rich in purebred cattle breeding, specifically Herefords. My family has a long history with the Denver Stock Show, dating back to 1907. I’m part of the Fred DeBerard lineage which at one point in time was a household name in the purebred cattle industry. I would call it a genetic defect! D: That's a great quote. Writing that down... Kaycee: [Laughs] Our family's cattle brand in Colorado, dating back to the 1800s, is 'Bar None,' which is also the name of my hat shop. We no longer brand cattle in Colorado, so branding hats seemed fitting. I managed to secure the 'Bar None' name here in Nebraska. D: That was a great move. How then did you meet your husband, Jason? Kaycee: It was 2003 and I worked in the Denver Stock Show office. He saw one of my hats on a friend and wanted one. I hand-delivered it to him at the show. That's how our story started. I also made sure to get paid for that hat! Jason's family has a long history in the cattle industry in California. His father ran a fair in MacArthur, California, for over 30 years. Due to the laws and regulations getting worse for ranchers in California, they were then drawn to Nebraska, leading us to settle in Thedford, which is centrally located and ideal for us. Jason's deep roots in the cattle business influenced our move here. We’ve been here for 15 years, and we love it. The community welcomed us warmly, which can be rare in rural agricultural communities. We're very involved in the community and love living in the Sandhills of Nebraska. We host two annual bull sales and used to have a live female sale, but we've moved that one online. D: Online sales are becoming more prevalent. Kaycee: Yes, but they are a double-edged sword. Good photos and videos are essential, especially for the younger generation. They're just not going to come and visit you, so they rely heavily on technology for decision-making. D: Many conversations like this eventually revolve around the difficulty of finding reliable help on the ranch, a common issue everywhere. January 2024

Kaycee: We have an excellent crew but have faced similar challenges. Finding good help is a concern, and we feel fortunate to have such great help. They’re all family to us. D: Is your family still involved in breeding Herefords in Colorado? Kaycee: Not as much now. My father has passed away, but some family members still live on our homestead ranch in Granby, Colorado. They lease it out; while there are cows, they're not ours. However, my sisters in New Mexico and Montana are involved in cattle breeding. The Hereford breed is great for kids due to their docility. While Angus and Hereford have benefited us, there's a special place in my heart for Herefords. Combined, including co-op herds for our embryo transfer work, we have over a thousand head. Nebraska has been conducive to our growth, which wouldn't have been possible in California, since the regulations there are overwhelming. Nebraska, on the other hand, has a more rea-

sonable approach to agriculture. D: Were they in Nebraska before you met? Kaycee: I was in Colorado while they were in CA. After meeting Jason, I spent two years in MacArthur before we moved to Nebraska. D: Were you apprehensive about Nebraska? Kaycee: Not at all. I was excited as it brought me closer to my family. They’re 5 hours away so it’s quite manageable. Interestingly, my family's origins trace back to Lewellen, Nebraska, making it feel like I returned closer to my roots. D: Tell me about your family life and daily routines with your kids.

24

Kaycee: My kids are the best part of my life. We have three: Haxton (13), Kennedy (11), and Hayden (9), who are actively involved in various activities, including sports and 4-H. We wake up at 5:30, and they have chores every morning and night with their show cattle. The two girls love horses, so they have those those chores to do as well. They must get it done before we leave for school every morning. Plus, I'm a huge advocate for teaching the kids music lessons. I think it's important because, in the future, who's gonna run the music programs at church? Haxton is also starting to engage in FFA and other school organizations. We're raising them with conservative, agricultural values, emphasizing hard work and loyalty. That means we’re keeping them busy to help them stay out of trouble <laughs>. D: Your plate is definitely full then. How about wildfires? I remember hearing about some challenging wildfire issues in your area? Kaycee: Two years ago, a big fire occurred near Halsey, burning many of the state's manmade forests. It burned about 300 acres of our property too. Wildfires are a major concern here. D: Do you engage in any crop farming? Kaycee: We grow corn for silage and purchase hay, though we now have leased land to produce our own hay. Finding a reliable source of hay is crucial for us. D: Can you tell us a little about the people that work for you on the ranch? Kaycee: We have seven employees. I believe they don't work for us but with us. We function as a team, and we couldn't manage without them. I'm not on the ranch much anymore due to my commitments at the hat shop and other town businesses, so we rely heavily on our team. We operate a feedlot too, and teamwork is essential, especially during winter storms. We do our best to maintain a family-like atmosphere. D: Are you members of any local or national organizations? Kaycee: Yes, we're involved with the Nebraska Cattlemen's, Nebraska Hereford and Angus Associations, and their national counterparts. We're also active members of our church. The Hereford Association, especially its junior program, is excellent and their Junior Nationals event is growing significantly.

D: As you know, we support women in this business. Have you faced any challenges as a woman in this field? Kaycee: The beef industry is male-dominated, but women play crucial roles. For instance, my mother-in-law manages all cattle records, indispensable to our operation. Women may not always make the big decisions, but they ensure the smooth day-to-day functioning of the ranch.

26

Women's roles are vital, especially in maintaining operations and ensuring everything runs smoothly in the background. In my experience, women are typically willing to undertake various tasks without seeking attention. D: Do you have any advice for girls or women aspiring to be in this industry? Kaycee: I advise chasing your dreams and not letting gender be a barrier. Women have made significant contributions to the industry and should continue to do so. D: I'd like to circle back again to your hat-making. How did you initially market your hats? Kaycee: I've always depended on old-fashioned word-of-mouth advertising. At cattle shows, I would take measurements with a unique head-conforming device, which piqued people's interest. I focused on delivering quality hats and fair prices, which helped build my reputation. D: Do you tailor hats to match personalities or styles? Kaycee: Yes, I select colors and creases based on the individual. The hat style often indicates the region a person comes from. For example,

Nevada cowboys prefer round-top flat-brim hats. D: Is your hat shop located at your ranch? Kaycee: My hat shop is in town and that allows me to work without interruptions from ranch duties. D: What sets your hats apart from others? Kaycee: Each of my hats has a distinctive Bar None liner, including a $2 bill as a good luck charm. This unique touch has helped build trust and rapport with my clients. D: Do your customers own multiple hats for different occasions? Kaycee: Typically, they have a work hat and a good hat. The work hat gets replaced with the good hat when it wears out, creating a cycle of need for new hats. It's important that the hats fit right to avoid discomfort. There’s too many headaches in life, your hat does NOT need to be one of them. D: Another great quote to jot down… It's always fascinating how hats can reflect regional styles and personalities. Kaycee: Yes, the traditional cowboy hat has been increasingly popular, partly due to the romanticized portrayal of ranching in shows like Yellowstone. However, ranching isn't as glamorous as it's depicted on TV. D: So the cattleman’s crease is more popular these days? Kaycee: I would call it a traditional cowboy hat with a cattleman crease. It's quite popular, even among older cowboys. D: Do you run a booth at the Denver show? Kaycee: I used to have a steamer booth at the stall, but with kids old enough to show cattle, I gave it up. I couldn't stay behind the steamer all day. However, I still take orders at the shows, and I'm getting a lot of repeat customers these days. January 2024

D: Are these repeat customers looking for different styles? Kaycee: Typically, with the majority of my clients, they want the same style they’ve worn for years. Occasionally, I'll get a request for something different. I keep their head measurements on file so they can easily reorder. After 20 years, I'm getting a lot of repeat business. D: Regarding ongoing challenges in our cattle industry, is there anything you'd like to change? Kaycee: We don’t have enough unity in our industry. We ALL need to be pulling the same direction because we're such a small population of people trying to feed the world. D: Completely agree. Any major challenges you’ve had that’s changed your life? Kaycee: A major challenge was losing my father to cancer in just nine weeks. It was life-changing, teaching me not to take any day for granted and increasing my empathy. D: Do you have any advice for young people just starting in this industry? Kaycee: WE NEED YOUNG PEOPLE. It's crucial to start encouraging interest in ranching at home. We must embrace the younger generation and involve them in our programs, not scare them away. This lifestyle needs to be passed on to ensure its survival. Also, being active in your community is crucial. It's essential to spark interest and life in these towns to give kids a reason to return, even with all the hard work involved in ranching. Small towns offer an appealing way of Bar None Hats

life, especially today. We're renovating an old hotel in town, which has been a new experience for me. A lot of small towns are just dying, but we are thriving here in Thedford. We have a tremendous group of older people, that are really active and keep it going. It might have been a little stale a few years in the eighties when a lot of ranch kids weren't returning, but we have a tremendous group of young adults from 25 to about 50 that are trying to make this community the very best that it can be. D: With the old hotel, it's great that you're revitalizing a piece of local history. I look forward to hearing more about it since old buildings in small towns are an interest of mine too. Kaycee: Yes, we should finish by spring. It's still work, but it adds flavor to our daily routine. Renovation projects like these can enrich a community. It's a different kind of work that I enjoy. D: What are your thoughts on global warming? Kaycee: I believe it's exaggerated. Weather patterns are natural, and the current focus on global warming seems overblown. D: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Kaycee: Probably still working on the ranch and the hat shop. Hopefully, my kids will be involved too. My son has varied interests, including being a firefighter pilot and a pastor, while my daughters 28

love ranching. D: Ford, Dodge, or Chevy? Kaycee: Chevy. I drive a Suburban. D: What's your favorite cut of beef, and how do you like it cooked? Kaycee: Sirloin, medium rare, with a bottle of Topo Chico water. D: How do you relax or get away from work? Kaycee: We don't take vacations. Work is our fun, but we do enjoy family trips related to ranching. D: That's understandable, I get it. Kaycee: Our leisure is often intertwined with work, like renovating the old hotel. D: One last thing, your Spring Bull Sale is coming up in February? Kaycee: Yes, we’ll sell over 200 Hereford bulls and over 100 Angus bulls. We're already getting everything ready for the sale which means we have a lot more to do! - Get yourself a handmade hat from Kaycee

for over 50 years. Billy started Hoffmann Angus by purchasing some bred heifers from an operation in his year’s All Breeds Tour was out of the Amer- Ada, MN, and they’ve seen a steady growth in the size icInn in Valley City. Last year was, too. That caused a and quality of their herd. A.I. has been used extenbit of a panic, as I only remembered that part. Then, sively, in addition to the recent introduction of an ET once I realized I wasn’t seeing ANY familiar faces, program. They focus on maternal traits & sound feet while trying to maintain performance. The EPDs they I really started thinking we were in the wrong spot. Derek had me convinced we were right where we be- focus on have been consistent through each generlonged, but I still wasn’t sure until the next morning ation. Oland Red Angus January 2024

Bohnsack Ranch is famous for its rodeos (among other things) held at the ranch back in the 40’s and 50’s. Still owned by the Bohnsack family, Klay’s parents have leased the property for thirty years. Klay and his brother started rodeos again at the ranch a few years ago. He remarked they had quite the turnout last year, as they hosted about 1500 on Saturday nights and just over half that the night before. Indeed, this is the first ranch I’ve been to with a boxing ring. Klay bought his first red Angus cow from Vulture Acres in 2009. He attended NDSU, completed his internship at Leland Red Angus, and then “dove into the breed from there.” The rodeo’s returning to the ranch mirrors his philosophy of returning to the basics when it comes to developing and marketing their purebred herd. The cows they strive to produce are easy-fleshing, easy-keeping cows that stay in shape year-round while breeding back and raising high-performance calves. There are strict parameters each cow must meet regarding teat and udder quality as well as foot structure to stay in the herd and have her offspring marketed to customers. They utilize an intensive AI & ET program to help propel their program forward. Their first bulls were sold via private treaty in 2019, and they will be hosting their 3rd annual bull sale on the first Saturday in May.

Lisbon, North Dakota Lisbon, ND

Erdmann Angus Ranch is a first-generation ranch owned and operated by Jeremy, Stacy, Rylee, and Kaylee Erdmann. Jeremy purchased 12 commercial cows from Gary Johnson of Steele, and in 1999, purchased their first registered from Joe Schaff, and they’ve grown ever since. Today, the herd consists of 150 registered females, 60 owned in partnership with Ray Haugen of Valley City. AI sires include Mogck Entice, Hoover No Doubt, Hoffmann Thedford, & Baldridge Versatile, to name a few. The Erdmann’s annual sale is held with Sprunk Angus on the last Friday of February the 23rd.

JK Angus is a family-owned operation operated by Wylie & Sherry Geyer and their children Jamie & Kaitlin. Kaitlin is currently a first-grade teacher for the West Fargo school district, and Jazmine is attending community college in Kansas plus competing on their Livestock Judging team. Jamie & Kaitlin purchased their first Red Angus cow from Dennis Krueger at the North Dakota Red Selects sale in 2010. That cow family is what they built their herd around. They strive for Performance without giving up eye appeal. They use AI, ET, and DNA testing to keep improving. JK Angus hosts an annual fall heifer sale on SC online sales every October.

ent feeder cattle. They started having annual sales in 2004 and will sell bulls and females at the ranch on the 2nd Monday in May. Mike and Shari, along with Shari’s father, Gerald, who has been raising and feeding out cattle since the early 70’s, combined their expertise and now feed out steer mates to sale bulls. They also feed many of their customers steers and heifers and have partnered with that purchase exclusively WL bulls. Mike and Shari are co-founders of Dakota Angus LLC and continue to partner with genetic customers to market quality beef from pasture to plate and share the profits.

DAKOTA ANGUS LLC Lamoure, North Dakota

A joint venture between Wendel Livestock & Bruner Angus Ranch and their customers provides high-quality Angus beef while sharing the profits with the hard-working producers. All the cattle are finished at Wendel Livestock and processed at Edgeley, ND, about 20 miles away at a state-inspected facility. The storefront/freezer is located at Bruner’s in Drake (about 3 hours NW), and Ashley (Bruner) is here at the stop today after just picking up an order for delivery to a local grocery store. Ashley's list for deliveries tomorrow includes a nursing home and 4 schools, as well as customer-specific placed orders. Dakota Angus LLC was presented with the 2023 Progressive Partner Award from CAB. They are the first ranch in North Dakota to receive a CAB award and are members of the CAB Ranch To Table pilot program. Their website gives information on both partners, processing, delivery, and pick up schedules, as well as ordering information.

Kathryn, ND

Derek, Brock, and the rest of the crew welcomed the 2023 All Breed Tour for dinner and our final stop of the day. JSF started in 1953 by purchasing one registered heifer from Hammer Shorthorns in Hannaford, ND, and has grown to be one of the most respected names in the breed. Currently, JSF breeds around 350 head of cows and 125 heifers annually. Heavy emphasis is placed on longevity, fleshing ability, and fertility, not numbers. A select group of purebred Angus cows are mated to white shorthorn bulls to make the ever-popular Blue Roan female. Additionally, JSF has created its January 2024

unique composite, featuring a blend of Shorthorn, Simmental, and Red Angus, resulting in red cattle that possess above-average performance and are widely accepted for their ability to improve fleshing ability, disposition, and maternal qualities. 2 sales are held at the ranch annually, “Durham Nation,” the first Sunday in November selling heifer calves, bred heifers, age advantage bulls and genetic lots. The other, the real highlight of JSF, “Durhams In The Dakotas” features 100 head of elite yearling Shorthorn and Shorthorn Plus bulls. This last sale has consistently been the highest grossing and averaging Shorthorn bull sale worldwide and is held on the last Saturday in January.

Pearl Valley Shorthorns Valley City, ND

Shawn and Kimberly Vachel and their children own and operate PVS. They have raised registered cattle since the 1970s and imported some of the first Simmental from Canada into North Dakota. Shorthorns were added 2014 and used on their registered Simmental to produce moderate, maternal, docile cattle. Their registered Shorthorns continue to increase, producing purebred and Shorthorn Plus bulls and females. Each year, sales are offered through Jungel’s “Durham Nation” and “Durhams In The Dakotas”. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -The 5 hour drive home seemed easy compared to the hours we spent driving, getting to, and going on the fall tours. Staying an extra night at a hotel didn’t seem too enjoyable either. So, we skipped out just after dinner, drove back to my home in Minnesota, got a good night's rest, and played another round of golf before I put Derek on a plane back to CA. I had 50,000 miles on my Jeep back in March. I’m now over 70,000, most of which were cattle tours and ranch visits. The North Dakota All Breeds Tour continues to be a highlight of the year for Derek and I alike. Since it’s not breed-specific, it creates much shorter drives between stops and numerous more possibilities. In addition, it also signifies the end of our travel for the year. That was kind of a bummer since we like being on the road visiting with ranchers and cows, but alas, a much busier work schedule lies ahead. Be talking to you soon….

Selling

100 YEARLING BULLS

• 32 years of carcass traits, ultrasounding since 1993 • Calving ease • Performance • Disposition • Uniform, thick and easy-fleshing • Priced from $3,800, $4,000 and $4,200 Heifers will be offered private treaty in the fall as bred heifers.

Loonan Genetics –

Impacting profitable bottom lines for generations!

We appreciate young cattlemen like James Johannes and his family. He came to us in 2007 – while still in high school – looking for a bull. It was July and we still had a Firefly Red Angus bull available, and he and his dad bought him. Here we are, years later, and James has gone from buying our last bull available to coming opening day. He studies over all the figures and is buying a bull from the top of the bull crop. His wife, Allison, works at one of our local banks as a credit analyst, so the Johannes family knows what their bottom line is. They know what to look for to get the most for their money from pounds to sell at the sale barn to keeping top replacement heifers. James has studied his genetics and has had years of outstanding calves with thickness, gainability and eye appeal. In fact, he recently sold 900-lb. heifers for $2,100.

James & Allison Johannes Jase and Mable

Join Loonan Stock Farm on Saturday, February 3, to evaluate bulls that will add profitability through calving ease, performance and carcass merit.

Visitors are welcome to visit the farm before the sale to view the bulls. We are happy to assist you in your bull selections to help you reach your cow herd profitability goals.
