Quality genetics and marketing programs for ranchers who sell ’em by the pound. Topp Herefords—Crossbreeding Solutions
» Topp Herefords makes crossbreeding easy—consistently improving net profits in commercial Angus herds. On average, commercial Angus herds can expect a 5 percent increase in weaning weights from heterosis. If the average cow raises seven calves, that’s an additional $248 in gross revenue. Multiply that by a herd of 250 cows and you are adding $62,000 to the bottom line without additional inputs. Can you afford not to crossbreed? » Curious about how other cattlemen are making crossbreeding work at scale? Call Topp Herefords, 701.674.3152.

So much more than Good Genetics by Tim McCray Tim@ABPmag.com
A year ago, we did a story on Topp Herefords and a small part on Ellingson Angus as inclusion in that article. We decided at that point that I’d write another article on Ellingson’s in order to focus on their operation. It’s amazing the information that’s out there on the internet. Finding some odd bits of information is always surprising to me. Like Chad swapping places with a chef for a day on a Certified Angus Beef story. Surprisingly, there’s not a lot out there on the web on Chad. He’s definitely “under the radar.” Julie, on the other hand, is a whole different subject and the search results were overwhelming. Chad Ellingson met Julie Schaff in 4-H and FFA during high school, which is when they started dating. Both of them attended Bismarck State College for a few years. Chad then pursued a career with 21st Century Genetics, and Julie went to NDSU, where she studied communication and agriculture. Chad had grown up primarily with a commercial cattle back-
- part 2 -
ground, and Julie brought the foundation of her own herd from Schaffs. Shortly after Julie graduated from NDSU, she started a job as communication director for the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association (NDSA). Chad continued his job as a procurement manager for Genex CRI. As the family grew to include five children, Stetson, Jameson, Sierra, Medora, and Sheridan, the herd also increased to a point where Chad left his management position behind for Ellingson Angus. For 17 years, Chad’s career with Genex took him to 43 different states, as well as Canada, Mexico, Scotland, Australia and New Zealand. The extensive travel for his job allowed him to see the bulls and females firsthand that were making the most considerable contributions to the beef industry. He expressed that calling on customers in Australia and New Zealand taught him the value of foot condition well before that practice was established here in America. Visiting with many top-tier producers also taught him the importance of customer service. He worked one-on-one with so many clients, examining their programs to see how AI & ET is (and isn’t) work-
ing in a group of cows. The resulting insight allowed him to make recommendations to further their herd goals. Chad would help his customers introduce better genetics to their herds and that is what he continues to do with Ellingson Angus. He visits customers to discuss their needs, finds a solution to make them more profitable, and follows through with their progress. All of this makes up the foundation of Ellingson Angus. Chad continues to apply those same principles with his customers, past and present.
“Anyone can be in the purebred business, but you need to have a program that people want to be a part of as well.” Julie’s career started as an internship with the North Dakota Wheat Commission for the summer. Here, she worked alongside a family friend, the communications director, Ellen Huber, who Julie still looks to as a mentor for her parts and progress within the NDSA. One of her earliest tasks was writing a children’s book promoting the value of wheat, the great value it brings to North Dakota’s economy, and its role in the food system. Her time working with the Wheat Commission proved to be extremely valuable as she had the opportunity to fine-tune some skills she learned in class, but hadn’t been given a chance to apply in real life. Julie’s internship helped her “learn from some of the best.” After graduating from NDSU, she was hired as a reporter for a local newspaper. Not long after that, she became the communication director for the Stockmen’s association. That position provided her with a creative outlet in producing the association’s monthly magazine amid the added pressures of deadlines and a supportive role in legislation.

Julie did all of this while raising a family of 5 and Chad traveled the country and the world. Her role at the association also allowed her the freedom to work from home and the office on a part-time basis while the couple was bringing up their family. Her next calling came while she was on maternity leave after the birth of their youngest daughter Sheridan. Then Executive Vice President Wade Moser called to tell her that he was announcing his retirement and encouraged her to apply for his position. 2009 started with Julie in her new role as Executive Vice President. With it, came a whole new set of challenges though rewards lay ahead. On behalf of the NDSA and the ranchers across the US, we can attest to the fact that she’s been quite busy. She attended President Trump’s State of The Union Address as a guest of Senator John Hoeven. Julie talked about the importance of trade in a meeting at the White House. She was even mentioned in one of the President’s speeches about the values and importance of tax reform for farm families along with the negative implications of the estate tax. Last February, she was named Agriculturist of the Year at NDSU’s Little International. This past October, she was asked to testify before Congress on behalf of beef producers across the
18
country. This past November, she was again hard at work at the State Capital during a special session of the legislature working at reforming their brand inspection program to be more modernized and yet still rely on the careful observation and documentation of inspectors to improve its efficiency. As I stated earlier, I could go on and on. There are just too many historical events that Julie has played an important of for me to mention. During the North Dakota All Breeds Tour this past October, someone had said that they (NDSA) “never stop working; they’re always busy working for us” [ranchers]. Julie is also very proud of the record number of memberships this year, while giving great credit to her staff. They want their members to find value in what they do, how they are represented, and they take pride in being a grassroots organization. As fate would have it, around the time Julie was going back to work in her new position, Chad was considering a decision himself. Either they decrease their numbers

or he needed to devote more time to growing their cowherd. That cowherd can be traced back to cattle that Julie’s grandfather bought in 1944. This history, coupled with Chad’s extensive knowledge from Genex, is what grew their herd. A few years ago, Chad flushed a bunch of cows to a bull born in 1972. He felt they had the right cows at the right time in order to go back and produce some matings that would be good tools for their customers and what they were producing. Taking care of customers is something both Julie and Chad do exceptionally well. When you’ve had the opportunity to work in other aspects of ag, you realize that customer service is important. First, you must have a tremendous product and have a great working relationship with each customer. Chad insists, “You have to allow people to see into your program, and one-on-one is extremely beneficial.” That is something Derek and I got to witness firsthand when we visited in June. A customer was coming to pick up some cattle they had purchased from Julie’s dad, Martin Schaff, and wanted to look at the Ellingson program while he was there. “We strive to have a program that extends beyond sale day,” Chad says. Plus, “we choose herd bulls based on what will work for our customers.” He continues, “You have to learn from your customers what genetics are working, so you can replicate that

and continue the success of your program. “Anyone can be in the purebred business, but you need to have a program that people want to be a part of as well.” Perfection isn’t attainable; all you can hope for is progression. That progressive way of thinking, constant learning, and struggle to achieve the unattainable is something I’ve seen in the Ellingsons…and the Topps as well. Ten years ago, Ellingson Angus joined Topp Herefords in a baldy heifer development program, which allowed both families to expand their seed stock offerings to commercial cattle producers. By adding Ellingson-sired, straight-Angus females bred to TH bulls, producers could maximize the number of steers and heifers that qualify for the Topp Herefords marketing programs. This ensures a source of proven, high-quality genetics for straight-Angus females. Today, the Ellingson Angus bred heifer program, and the Topp Herefords baldy program work together seamlessly. Topp Herefords strongly believes in having a consistent source of high-end Angus females. Ellingson Angus buys back first-cut, replacement-quality, Ellingson-sired, Angus females from its bull customers, breeds those females to Topp Herefords bulls, which in turn, are offered to Topp Herefords customers seeking to maintain an Angus cowherd. By supplying top-quality Angus heifers to Topp Herefords bull customers, the crossbreeding system is simplified. Topp Herefords customers maximize the number of heifers and steers in their herd that qualify for TH marketing programs and ensure a source of proven, high-quality genetics for their straight-Angus females. “This system can only work with front-end cattle and also must be built by front-end people,” Ryan Topp says. “Quite simply, Ellingson Angus fits the bill on both fronts.” I was talking with Wade Moser (former executive VP for NDSA, whom Julie replaced), and during
22
our conversation, Wade gave me a second useable title without either of our knowledge. “North Dakota is full of good quality people producing good quality cattle,” and the Ellingsons certainly are a part of that. North Dakota has produced a top official on just about every national breed association at one point. Producing good cattle and taking care of customers well beyond sale day, is something the Ellingsons have polished since day one. But it hasn’t been for themselves. Instead it’s all been to keep Ellingson Angus going and sustaining in order to pass it on to the next generation. Stetson and Jameson are both back on the ranch full-time, Sierra is in college working on a premed degree, Medora is in high school, and Sheridan is in jr. high. These are all exceptional people, producing exceptional cattle.
Ellingson Angus hosts a production sale on their ranch near St. Anthony, ND, on the first Saturday in February.

BERTRAND, NEBRASKA
The Angus Whisperer by Tim McCray. Tim@ABPmag.com
Since he was first able to walk, Abe Kuck has been a part of his family’s farming & Angus operation. If you ask most kids at a young age what they want to be when they grow up, it usually changes throughout their childhood. But taking care of the Angus cattle that his grandparents Leroy & Loretta started over 60 years ago is all Abe ever wanted to do. Abe’s humble, soft-spoken demeanor and the love of his herd earned him the nickname of Angus Whisperer from myself and Derek - we’ll see if it sticks. I caught up with Abe the day after Thanksgiving to fill more gaps. Abe’s Thanksgiving was spent in the pasture attending to a sick cow, and from what I have witnessed of Abe, that only seems fitting. Derek and I first met some of the Kuck family on a trip through Nebraska during the harvest of 2020. We met Abe & Stacy, Abe’s father Kallen, and Abe’s brother-in-law Thane on the side of the road for a 10-minute meet and greet as they were combining. Stacy got the job of giving us the tour that evening and showing us the cattle. But both Derek & I came away from that gravel road stop with the inclination that we would be back, as we sensed something needed to be told. Leroy Kuck met his wife Loretta during high 38

school. Shortly after graduation, in 1957, they wed when they were 18 & 19. They started with five cows and heifers, which he purchased from his parents. The couple rented a house from an elderly gentleman who watched Leroy grow up. Loretta started attending college classes to acquire a teaching degree while Leroy was farming and tending to the cows, and at least in his head, coming up with a future for the young couple. This plan would eventually lead them to their current location among the corn and soybean fields near Bertrand, NE. Leroy had picked out a farm that he liked with some flat ground for farming and some ravines for the cattle. He approached the elderly couple that lived there and asked about renting it out. But they weren’t interested and planned on staying. A few years later, the same elderly gentleman stopped Leroy and asked him if he was still interested in buying the place. Leroy and Loretta put a business plan together and went to the bank. The banker liked Leroy’s proposal but wanted the weekend to think it over. On Monday morning, the banker had decided it wouldn’t work. By later that afternoon, Leroy had convinced him that it was a good idea, and they ended up buying the farm that

he had sought to rent out only a few years earlier. Over the next several years, both the family and the herd grew. The Kuck family now consisted of 3 daughters: Bretta, Joni, Gina, and one son, Kallen. The girls loved the cattle and the horses; Kallen loved the tractors. Fathers and sons don’t always get along or see eye to eye. As Loretta puts it – “Leroy didn’t understand Kallen, and Kallen didn’t understand Leroy.” Leroy was tough on the kids, and Abe admits that, but he is also grateful that he was. Eventually, intolerance gives way to empathy, which leads to acceptance even though we may not like it. Leroy was determined, strong-willed, stubborn, no doubt, but that isn’t always a defect either. That same stubbornness kept him in business and also kept him alive. Pretty early on, a gentleman invited Leroy & Loretta to take a look at his “new machine” to irrigate crops. He came away from seeing his first pivot and said to Loretta that he thinks they could install a pivot in a rough ground area and make some more tillable land within their property. His neighbors thought he was crazy, but those pivots are still there and in use today. Leroy suffered from Asthma for quite some time before they figured out that the cattle dander and also the dust from the corn treatment were what had aggravated it. By then, Kallen was planting most of the corn and loading all of the planters to help keep Leroy away from that dust. Kallen was “excused” from school during planting and harvest
time. Something that Kallen’s children would one day experience as well. Giving up certain luxuries or habits for Asthma is tough. But giving up one’s livelihood for it is something else. I’m not that stubborn; I would have found a different career path. So it’s a good thing for the rest of the family that Leroy was that determined. While Abe was still in high school, Kallen had decided to move the family into town to be nearer his wife’s work. Abe decided that he would stay on the farm and help out his grandparents, to be joined by his brother Kaleb as well. For the next several years, Abe, Kaleb, Leroy & Loretta continued to improve their herd and operation. With the two brothers now helping with herd management, there was also a shift from Stevenson to Schaff genetics.

Abe claims they had more of the body types he was looking for. SAV provided more of the genetics they were striving for. However, during one of their trip to Montana, Leroy had observed the elk in Yellowstone and thought he would like to have some of those as well. So they opened another pasture further east to hold the elk herd. Abe isn’t just the Angus whisperer. He’s also about the only one in the family that can deal with the elk. So I guess he’s an elk whisperer now too. This past June, Derek and I visited Loretta, Abe & Stacy in Loretta’s Kitchen. Learning about their family, and operation Loretta says, “Leroy married Loretta, but he loved his cows” Loretta talks about herself in the 3rd person, which is something I don’t come across too often. I genuinely get a kick out of her and the stories she’s relating. At this point, Leroy was in a nursing home in Grand Island but has since moved to Bertrand. However, I’m getting a little ahead of myself. Leroy is concerned about a couple of things today as we’re talking with Loretta. He wants to know where his dog is and where his Corvette is. The German Shepherd is at our feet, ever alert to anyone that is “new” like Tim and Derek. The Corvette is apparently in the garage. Leroy would “get the bull books and pick out the types of cattle he wanted, Growth, depth, and body, and we’d go all over looking for that type,” Loretta says. As they were seeking to increase their herd, Leroy had spotted an ad from a guy in Mon-
tana that seemed to have what he was searching for. After some phone conversations, it was apparent they needed to head that way. So the day after Thanksgiving that year, Loretta and Leroy headed out in his corvette for Montana. Loretta didn’t want to go, but Leroy insisted and gave her the ultimatum. She could stay here or come along, but he was taking the corvette. (See, stubborn.) But that trip to Basin Angus and meeting Wayne Stevenson was just the beginning of a friendship between the two men that would last for many years. Loretta points out that Leroy & Wayne talked frequently. Whenever Leroy was getting in a bad mood, she would hint that he needed to call Wayne. Whatever it was, he always came back after that phone call and was happier and back on track. They returned every year and bought some more bulls. One night Leroy came home and decided he wanted to increase their herd. Buy some heifers, background them, breed them and sell them. Once again, Wayne Stevenson had just what they were looking for, and when it was all finished, Leroy and Loretta brought back 240 head from Basin, which is today, the foundation of their registered herd. The herd, which started from those first five cows, grew to over 1100 commercial head at one point. Loretta didn’t grow up with cows, so Leroy always taught her about cattle. She learned to wean the calves and work the cattle. As planting season or harvest season started, he would usually remark to her that “the cattle are yours.” By now, the Kuck
children were grown, married, and had kids and farms of their own. Kallen, his wife, and their seven children remained on the farm. Usually, when the kids would get home from school, they would eat lunch and then help grandma and grandpa with chores. For Abe and his brother Kaleb, this usually meant helping grandma with the calves. During weaning one year, Loretta recalls when the boys were helping, “I put the bottle between my knees and started mooing.“ Abe asked her what she was doing. “I’m becoming a mama cow.” She was really teaching Abe and Kaleb how to bond with a cow. That bond with those cattle is different with Abe than what I’ve witnessed before. I’ve seen a few ranchers that can usually tell me the tag number from a quarter-mile away or more. This is a feat, but Abe himself seems to be on a whole different level with that ability. But there’s more to Abe than just that top skill as a cattleman. The herd swarms us as we’re driving through the pasture, almost to the point that the entire pack is focused on Abe and what he’s about to tell them for direction. Or it could be because he’s handing out treats like candy. It doesn’t matter because the docility in this crowd is something Abe and his family have strived for since the beginning. There’s a magical connection between him and his herd. Maybe there’s something otherworldly happening with the entire Kuck family. Loretta had knee surgery a few years ago. During her time in the hospital, Kallen and Leroy visited. Loretta wanted to go into the hallway for some exercise,

and Leroy went to use the restroom. Just as Kallen thought he had been in there too long and was going to check on him, Leroy called out that he needed help. He coded right then and there. The medical professionals had just given up, and the Dr. asked them to

hit him one more time. That brought him back. Talking about the cattle helped his brain come back too. But it would be a hard road ahead for therapists and rehab. But Leroy eventually returned home, and then covid happened, and he got that too. He may not return to the farm or get to drive his corvette again, but I have a feeling God isn’t done with him just yet. As if that weren’t enough for the Kuck family, Loretta also had her own near-death experience. An infection in the bloodstream took her to the hospital. There she remembers looking down on the bed and seeing herself looking down on herself. She describes the feeling of being surrounded by people yet unaware of who they were. “The colors were just so fantastic,” Loretta says. “I was more focused on the colors than the people.” She also describes that if she wanted to be elsewhere, she wouldn’t walk or even fly but would just be in this new place she wanted to be in. Then she remembers talking with someone and saying she had to go back because there were a few things she needed to do, one of which was mainly helping Leroy. When she awoke back in the hospital bed, the Dr. informed her that they didn’t think she would make it. The Dr. told her, “Loretta, for two
44
days, your spirit had left your body.” Leroy & Loretta’s decision to sell off their herd happened long before, though. They had attended an auction at the local livestock market of an elderly gentleman whose cattle were in poor shape. They remarked to each other upon leaving that they hoped When they get old enough, and we’re unable to take care of our cattle, they hoped they would be wise enough to sell them to someone. So around 2013, Abe and his brother Kaleb bought out most of the herd from their grandparents. Kaleb himself got married and moved his part of the herd north. Abe, Stacy, Kallen, Thane, and Loretta continue to carry on Kuck Ranch’s legacy. Leroy is now in a care facility in Bertrand. Although he may not physically be involved on the grounds as he used to be, all the training he did with Loretta & Abe seems to have set them up well for a bright future. Leroy pushed everyone to their maximum to get the very best out of them. Abe and his grandparent’s vision of their cattle are mirror images. They’re not concerned with EPD’s or carcass data as much as they are about producing good phenotypical cattle, easy fleshing ability, and good feet. Cattle that are docile and will work well in any herd. This February 8th, Kuck ranch will hold the annual production sale in Lexington, NE, just as they have since they stopped selling with Basin. As quiet as Abe is, it was hard to get an interview out of him. As much as this story is about Abe, it’s not about Abe. Which again, only seems logical for a guy we call the Angus whisperer.

“We built our new ABS Global Calf Facility in the summer of 2016. This was the first time we utilized anything except steel at one of our facilities and it was a hard sell to the staff. However, after meeting with Travis at TJ’s Fencing in Harpers Ferry, and having him bring a gate home to show the staff, we were sold. We utilize more than 200 different sizes of gates, all purchased from TJ’s Fencing and installed by Cliff ’s Incorporated from Friesland, WI. The gating is holding up very well. We intend to expand our calf facility this summer and will definitely continue utilizing TJ’s Fencing for the gating.” - Jim Meronek, Health Assurance, Production and Supply Chain Director ABS Global, Inc DeForest, WI

MATERNAL PERFORMANCE FOR GENERATIONS... – Delivered with every bull we sell. LONGEVITY
Cows bred for longevity traits stay in the herd for years and are the most profitable resource on any beef operation.
PERFORMANCE
UDDER QUALITY
Performance is pounds on the scale and pounds pay the bills. Whether you sell live or on the rail, SAV genetics have a long-standing reputation for adding pounds and profit.
For nine decades SAV has focused on maternally-efficient cows with high quality udders and abundant milk required to wean heavy calves that top the market.
STRUCTURE
Structural integrity, soundness and feet quality are a necessity to make long-term, problem-free, production-orientated producers.
FERTILITY
FLESHING EASE
Fertility is the primary economical trait - a necessity for cows to breed on time and calve annually for many years.
SAV genetics are bred with the capacity and body type to be naturally easyfleshing, forage-efficient and thrive under range conditions.
Make plans to attend SAV’s 119th Production Sale on February 12, 2022, and select from over 600 registered Angus bulls and females from a proven program focused on real-world performance, productivity and profitability traits. 64
