FALL TOUR 2023 THREE FORKS, MONTANA

by Tim McCray Tim@ABPmag.com

SEPTEMBER 12TH - 13TH

BIG SKY

It

was a rough start to the tour season this year. I had planned to fly out to Bozeman and meet with Derek. Well, his glass moonroof decided to blow up while on the way to Wyoming to attend the Best Beef in the West competition. That wasn’t the only challenge, as my dog was battling fleas, and I was losing. So, my plan B was to skip the Hereford tour and perhaps meet Derek in Nebraska. Plan C was something I wasn’t aware of quite yet, but it turned out to be the best option – getting myself and the dog out of the house for 2 weeks. So, after helping my wife spread diatomaceous earth all over our house, I picked up Derek at the airport, and we left for Montana, arriving the next day in Three Forks. It had been a long week for both of us, so after viewing the tour itinerary, we decided to sleep in and catch the latter part of the next day’s breakfast stop. We finally got some rest and hot showers and downed some caffeine to get on the road. While driving, we got a call from our friend Jon Bouma, who asked if we wanted to visit another breeder nearby for a few minutes before we started the tour. Jon had some work to do at the ranch, and visiting with him would be great. We just passed that exit, so we made a U-turn to what we thought would be a quick visit. We liked salvaging something from the morning since we were already behind. Jon introduced us to Jim Felton, whom we knew but never met. An hour later, we realized we’d been there too long and decided to head straight to the next stop for lunch.

K & C Herefords Deer Lodge, MT

Cory & Keesha Dutton own K&C out of Deer Lodge, Montana. They run a small herd of polled Herefords, taking pride in focusing on quality rather than quantity for 40+ years. They sell yearling bulls in the late spring and private treaty heifer calves in the late fall after weaning. Derek and I talked to them for a few minutes as we stopped at Thomas Herefords, and their passion for the Hereford breed was impressive.

EHLKE HEREFORDS value, and invest in the ranch today. Bruce and his wife Tammy continue to live on the ranch. Over the last sixty years, they’ve developed the vision of superior land management and livestock production. Focusing on raising low maintenance, high return females and proven herd sires. They have raised winning champions at the 2008 & 2013 National Western with KT John Wayne and RST Times A Wastin’ (respectively). Times A Wastin’ was named Hereford World Champion later that year. Town Kid 9023, and Final Print 0016 were all produced here, making a solid impact in the breed today. Final Print is a fast gainer and carries a lot of flesh, which Shirley believes will be a game changer. When we reached the Thomas ranch, we found Shirley, Bruce, and some more family at a beautiful, wooded location by the creek where lunch was served. The tour was gone, and the food as well. But we had a great one-on-one visit for over an hour with Shirley, who unfortunately was in a wheelchair due to a recent ankle injury. Full of spirit, we listened intently as she gave us the ranch's history since she’d never lived more than 3 miles away. Shirley was delighted to tell us stories of the first gold found in Montana nearby (nobody knows where), and several calvary artifacts were found on the ranch, too. They also found a rifle from the Civil War era in a tree nearby where the first person was hung in the Montana Territories. Also, the final stake in the transcontinental railroad was driven in their backyard. Sales are held private treaty, and visiting this beautiful spot of Montana is a bonus. As we prepared to leave, we discovered that the tour had already left the next stop, so we headed to the dinner stop, our first food of the day. continued on page 16 --> 13

Dutton Herefords Gold Creek, MT

Dutton Hereford Ranch has a reputation of straight-bred Herefords with Canadian bloodlines. They sell their virgin horned 2-year-old bulls by private treaty every spring. 5 years ago, they incorporated Red Angus into their commercial operation for calving ease, which has worked well for them.

Ehlke Herefords Townsend, MT

Mark & Della Ehlke are first-generation Hereford seedstock producers. Mark Ehlke had a lifelong interest in Hereford’s, and after serving as a commercial judge at the Montana Hereford Association’s Winter Fair sale in 1994, he bought their first registered heifer. Soon after, they purchased some irrigated ground near Townsend, MT, and moved the family (daughters Lacey Jo & Jane’a) plus the handful of commercial cattle they had. They purchased 60 cows from Byron Bayers that they had been leasing already, which was the start of Ehlke Herefords. Today, Mark & Della, Lacey Jo & Jane’a (raising families of their own now) are involved in all aspects of the ranch. The Ehlke’s have been able to make substantial improvements in genetics and increase the size of their operation through the retention of quality replacements, outside genetics, and AI & ET. Their “Montana Made Production Sale” is held at the ranch on the third Saturday in September, which was only a few days after our visit.

Churchill Cattle Co.

Manhattan, MT

We were off to a more appropriate start the following day, arriving at Churchill Cattle Company in time for breakfast. Dale and Nancy Venhuizen and their daughters own and operate CCC. The sole purpose of CCC is the design, production, and marketing of the best quality Hereford genetics for the beef industry. They’ve worked hard to make CCC synonymous with strong performance, carcass quality and maternal traits like fertility and high-quality udders. Usually, setting up for a tour stop is extra work, but for Dale & Nancy, it’s a dry run for their “World Class Female” sale in 2 days. Dale grew up on the other side of Manhattan, about four miles from his ranch today. The old homestead is still in the family, and they pasture some cows there. In addition, they also farm potatoes, wheat & hay. They offered just over 120 females this year and about the same at the World Class Bull Sale in late January. COOPER HEREFORDS

Feddes Herefords Manhattan, MT

Dan Feddes, brother Tim, and son Taylor continue to build on their family’s roots. Tim and Dan’s father, Marvin, started with Herefords with his brother Neal in 1945. They strive to produce sound, efficient cattle with calving ease, rapid growth, and excellent carcass. Their herd has long been recognized for fertility, sound feet, and good udders. They breed in a 45-day window, and retain only those conceived, which adds to the fertility of their cow herd. They’ve kept meticulous herd records for decades, so they pay careful attention to EPDs . At the same time, they draw on their practical experience as cattlemen, and listen closely to the needs of ranchers, feeders, packers, and consumers. All their bulls and females are sold private treaty.

Bozeman, MT In 1990 Katelyn Storey-Kohlbeck became the family’s fourth generation to own registered Herefords on a ranch 10 miles West of Bozeman. – storeyherfordranch.com That’s a powerful opening statement. It tells me who, where, why, and when without saying it. Bozeman feels a lot closer than 10 miles, but directly across the Gallatin River, Bozeman is pushing against its eastern bank. It never really felt like we had left the city when we arrived at Storey’s for our afternoon lunch stop. Yet, there’s a quiet serenity amongst the chaos of a tour and the inexorable bustle of Bozeman. Katelyn’s great-grandfather entered the Hereford business in 1935. Since then, every generation after has contributed to not only Storey Hereford Ranch’s success but also MHA and AHA as well. A horse-drawn wagon from Vigilante Carriages commands proudly at today's entrance, welcoming tour busses and beckoning us for a pasture ride. After a brief history by Katelyn’s father, Chuck, and some family introductions, Katelyn gives us November 2023

the “lay of the land” to find replacement heifers, highlight pairs, highlight heifer calves, females, and herd sires. SHR’s goal is to produce efficient, consistent, uniform individuals, and the best way to raise good bulls is to have good cows. Katelyn informs us they’ve “culled and paid attention to fertility, docility, and performance.” Performance and phenotype are what they are chasing right now, and she adds that “Cattle need to perform a little bit more than just on a piece of paper, but EPDs go into what they do with that.” Lunch was served, but I think more people were drawn to the carriage ride (pun intended), which left us a little time to learn that Katelyn heard we were in town and hoped we would be stopping by. Flattery goes a long way with Derek & me, so we had a few minutes to chat a little with Katelyn after her welcome speech. Above all else, I was curious about how they dealt with the city being so close and the ranch so easily accessible to nearby residents. “Bozeangelas,” she called it, and yes, they get a lot of people wanting to pet their cows or horses but also buy their beef. She capitalizes on every opportunity to educate those Bozeangelinas. Storey Hereford Ranch also sells by Private Treaty.

Willow Creek, MT

It was familiar terri tory for Derek and me as we had visited Cooper’s following the last Hereford tour on our way out of the state. We have to leave from here for our next tour like last time. But we decided to swing in and say hello to Mark, Katie, Kelsy & Dave again! 1914 was when Frank Cooper settled the original homestead of 480 acres. Frank’s son Jack bought the land, and Cooper Herefords started with a purchase of 15 Line 1 females in 1946. Jack's son

Storey Herefords Mark returned to the ranch in 1977 after studying at Montana State University. Jack and Mark worked together for 40 years to improve their cattle and farming operations. Today, Mark and his wife Cristy still run the operation, with their two daughters, Katie & Kelsy, and son-in-law Dave Hanson – who also acts as a fishing guide when time permits. Jack Cooper decided to produce cattle suited for the commercial bull market. He also believed in paying close attention to performance records. Since they began, they have stayed true to those genetics and decades of line breeding to produce well-balanced cattle incorporated in registered and commercial herds nationwide. Today that cowherd consists of over 200 registered Line 1 Herefords with nearly 60

years of successful, legendary sales. Cooper Hereford Ranch will host their 58th production sale on the second Tuesday in March. Considering we had to be in Kearney, Nebraska, the following day, we decided it was best to skip out on what we heard was a spectacular dinner following the tour to get on the road. So, the Cooper stop was, at least for us, all about saying our goodbyes to old friends and new ones. We spent a reasonable amount of time at Storey’s talking with some new friends on the tour from England, and we set them up with some swag to take home. It’s a little push for me to get on the road, but once I’m out, I adjust rather quickly. At least Frodo has stopped scratching, and I’m not finding any fleas….

Some weeks ago in Riverton, Wyoming, a quiet minute held in the celebrity judge’s room at the Rendezvous City Beef Roundup. Then we could hear one of the judges asking Tyler McCann, founder of this event, “Can we try cut #13 again?” The rest of the judges also piped up, discussing how they kept thinking of entry #13 and wanted more. That night, the competition's winner was a clear choice: #13 was awarded the title of “Best Beef in the West,” or as a few judges later confessed, “probably in the whole country!" So, we That evening, Tyler announced that the beef was a Holstein cut from Sawmill Creek Farms in Richmond, said, if we’re not doing this with beef, we’re stupid. So, they started it as a state-wide event, which grew to be Michigan. Everybody was impressed. Tyler heard of very popular, “We need to highlight our beef productheir growing Farm to Table operation and contacters and ultimately make sure that people are aware of ed the owners, Sarah and Nick Knust, to ask if they how to access them.” Well, word got out, and everywanted to enter his Best Beef competition. Sarah said she hadn’t ever done anything like this before but then body wanted in. Beef producers called Tyler from said, “Why not?” I talked with Sarah for about an hour all over the country, “This is amazing, and we don’t understand how you’re doing this. We couldn’t do this and discovered that she and her husband were runin our state. Can we compete?” ning a small operation that’s…not so small anymore. The Roundup now has two “Best Beef ” competiIt's snowballing in such a great way that they keep expanding to keep up with the demand. More on that tions. The first is the “Open Division,” with 21 entries from 15 states as far east as New York and New Jersey. in a minute… The prize winners will be chosen by celebrity judges Local rancher Tyler McCann created this event about 5 years ago, which has grown uncommonly fast who are professionals and/or avid beef eaters with a significant presence in the local area. The next is the while celebrating everything beef. It all started when “Wyoming Division,” which, for VIP ticket holders, Tyler and his wife were at a coffee roasters festival was the dinner during the Roundup. This consisted where they had one of those “aha” moments, “We 22

of ten producers from around the state entering the same cut of beef. VIP ticket holders got a one-ounce serving from the ten ranges and voted on the “Best Beef in Wyoming.” The winners of each event get a special rodeo-style belt buckle to mark their victory. Ok, back to Sawmill Farm’s steaks and why I can’t wait to cut into the second one on my plate. I was supposed to attend this competition, but I had a bit of an accident with my truck on the way there. My sunroof blew up. It blasted up and out, with shards of glass falling all over me. So, I had no choice but to return home and call my insurance. Fun. The following day, I contacted Sarah Knust. A quick response and a couple of rings later, we talked for almost an hour. I spent my summers in Michigan with family, so we talked briefly about that and the remainder about how they started small and have grown so much, thanks to COVID-19. “I was quite shocked about the win. I didn’t know what to do or expect from the contest. I didn’t look at the steaks I sent as they were wrapped up and ready to sell. I just

which we raised ourselves. We added piglets, raised them, and started selling those too. Our place used to be a greenhouse/produce stand, so there was already a store on the property, and we used it. We quickly grew out of our garage, remodeled the old store and

took a few out of the fridge, boxed ‘em up, and sent them out to Tyler since I only had a few days to send my entries in.” She knew her beef was a great seller at her store and even had trouble keeping it in stock. But this? Wow. She didn’t think anything of it until they announced her name while she was watching the broadcast. “They kept raving about #13, and I was like, wow, that must be some beef. Lucky them. When they announced 2nd place, and it still wasn’t my name, I thought, oh well, at least I gave it a go. But then they said Sawmill Creek Farms won. I didn’t know how to react but was so excited.” Sarah’s farm is like most others in this country. “Well, I grew up on a dairy farm, and my husband grew up farming crops with his family. We married in 2013, bought a place near the family farm, and started our operation. In 2015, when our oldest son was born, I missed the cows. So, we got a couple of dairy calves just for me to raise. It gave me something to do. Eventually, we got more cattle and sold sides, halves, and whatnot. Then, it quickly grew from there. We sold our first side of beef in 2016. Then, in 2017, we decided to put up four freezers in our garage and start selling by the pound. In 2018, we added pork, November 2023

moved everything out there. We only put up a few walls since we thought, oh, we don't need anything big <laughs>. Not long after that, we had to add two more freezers for a total of six to keep up with demand. Then, we started raising our chickens because people were asking for chickens. So that was in 2019 when we remodeled our store again and started raising the meat chickens. We were established before 2020, but when COVID-19 hit, we were the only farm in the area. Even the grocery stores didn't have meat, and everything else was closed. We were the only source of meat for miles.”

“This is when it all just exploded..."

"We were only open three hours a day then, but we ran 50-60 people through our store daily. Whenever we brought more in, I had to shut down our store because we ran out of meat quickly. This was when COVID-19 was getting scary around March or April, and everything was shut down. I didn't shut down, I just paused it 'cause we had no meat to sell. I would get our beef back from the processor and take more orders, and people would quickly come to pick it up. We would bring home three whole beefs worth of meat, which would be gone within three days. We

Sarah and Nick Knust, owners of Sawmill Creek Farms didn’t have the animals, but we fixed that. We got more cattle, pigs, chickens, and land to grow more crops. Then we started tearing more walls down and made the whole front of the store into our storefront. Now we have 14 chest freezers and one 8 x 16 walkin freezer in which we keep our extra meat. We commonly have 80 people through our store on a busy day, and we’re only open for four hours. As far as the beef, we don't really do anything special. We did experiment with some recipes and eventually decided upon something that made everybody happy. I would call us the misfits of the livestock world because when we moved here, there was nothing, not a trace of any barn or animals. We’ve built this all from scratch. Take the barns; we made one our pig barn and the other our ‘green barn’ with hay and stuff. We built a lean-to and then another for our big feedlot. Then, we added a chicken barn, where we raise and sell close to 3,500 meat chickens a year. Pigs, we do 120 a year. Beef, we do about 140 a year. We send 10-12 steers to the butcher every month since that's what we go through in our store. The butcher is about a two-and-a-half-hour drive, but we go to him because he’s really good. We have about 275 head of cattle with a herd of 45 beef cattle and a 40 by 80 hoop barn in which we have calves. We have Holsteins, Charolais Jersey crosses, and 26

Holstein Angus crosses. We have our brew cows, British whites, and Herefords. So, it's all mismatched. The key is we feed 'em all the same way. They go on grain as soon as they are able. Then they're just on a steer stuffer. We also have a 2,000-acre crop farm where we raise about 150 acres a year of non-GMO corn for our animals, grind it all ourselves, and feed it. We also have about 200 acres of wheat and 135 acres of hay. Plus, we have 900 acres of corn and 800 acres of soybeans, where we do cover crops in between. We try to be sustainable. When we plant the cover crops, it’s not just for the soil's nutrients; we harvest that cover crop and feed our brew cows. It has a lot of uses. Every-

body wants non-GMO corn and non-GMO-fed animals. We can't do organic because we can't say we're organic.” Back to the Best Beef Rendezvous. I talked to a couple of the judges on the panel, and they were both excited to share their judging experience. First was Master Chief Petty Officer Harvey Fisher, a Navy Explosives Ordinance Operator with 22 Years of Service: “All the beef was excellent. We went back and forth with a couple of them. It was between 13 and 10, but 13 was just miles ahead of 10, so it was a pretty easy choice. That combination of smell, taste, and texture was much better. Most of us thought 13 was perfect across the board. When we found out what it was, we were surprised it was Holstein, yes, but mostly surprised that it was from Michigan. Kudos to the producer, as we were all taken back by both the breed and the location.” The second judge I interviewed was Brian Tucker, the assistant general manager at Hi Mountain Seasoning in Riverton. After talking with him, he knows his cows, especially beef. “I’ve been in agriculture my whole life, on cows 30 years, and this is the best meat I’ve tasted. What’s funny is most people have no idea that Holstein is what over 50% of beef is in the country. These guys won the Best Beef in the West and probably the Best Beef in the Country competition, with Holstein beating Wagyu and Angus. Seven out of eight of us had Sawmill’s beef placed first. The one that didn't have 'em first had ‘em second. So, it was dang near unanimous. Sawmill Creek did really, really well.” Can Sawmill Creek do it again? We’ll see next year. They won by such a wide margin that it’s entirely possible. I’m sure there will be many more entries next year now that the word is out in an even bigger way. I can tell you that Sarah and Nick are some of the nicest people and are extremely surprised yet appreciative of this whole experience. Visit their site: www.SawmillCreekFarmsLLC.com Second place went to Burly Brothers Country Butchery in Attica, New York. Third is Goethe Farms in Bricelyn, Minnesota, and fourth is Mountain View Meats in Fort Collins, Colorado. Best Beef in Wyoming comes from Turbiville Ranch in Sundance. Second best is Circle H Ranch in Afton and third was a tie between Jackknife from Freedom and J. Walker Land & Livestock in Gillette. I’ll write more on the Rendezvous in a future issue since there’s much more to tell about Tyler McCann and his plans for next year. Who knows, maybe I’ll make it next time. November 2023

HOLIDAY INN KEARNEY

September 15-16

KEARNEY, NEBRASKA

If you’ve ever driven from eastern Nebraska to

Montana, you probably know about Hwy 26, which makes a SE/NW diagonal through Wyoming and into Nebraska. If you’re not paying attention to time or mileage and are now used to driving busy interstates, you go through Cheyenne, which doesn’t take much longer, adding 50 miles to the journey. Now, add that there isn’t a lot between Cheyenne and Ogallala, so you better pay attention to your gas gauge. Derek was driving in the pouring rain all morning, and as he said, “I was watching the road instead of the gas gauge.” So, we took a short hour break for someone to bring gas while on the side of a nowhere county road miles from anywhere. Eventually, we made it to Kearney with enough time to grab a decent meal and head to bed for the next day's activities. We were looking forward to the golfing tomorrow and weren’t due at the course until 1:00. Derek took a few golf lessons between our trip to Texas and this one, so at least he was somewhat prepared to join in the festivities for the day. My golfing partner was Joe Epperly, director of golf operations for Wagonhammer Ranches, whom we visited last year on this tour. I know he was kidding about that title, but after watching him play, I was convinced it was fitting. This year's event was held at Kearney Country Club, and it was well worth the drive since it was a scenic course nestled into the hills of college town. I’ve golfed in Nebraska twice, and I don’t know which one I like better between the two courses. 30

Both grounds were immaculate, making me think I’ll need to return to Nebraska for more golfing. After golf, we all met at the fairgrounds for that evening's dinner, followed by a presentation by Dr. Mark Boggess – Director of US Meat Animal Research in Clay Center, NE. The following day we were back at the fairgrounds for breakfast and displays by Schulte Angus Ranch & Gardels Lazy Four Angus.

Pleasanton, NE

Since immigrating to the US from Germany in the late 1800s, the Schulte name has been synonymous with farming. In 1997, Jeremy, a fourth generation rancher, and his wife Stacy began to AI the commercial herd with Angus bulls, which resulted in a noticeable increase in the quality of the cattle. After investing in purebred Angus heifers, they began flipping the herd from commercial to purebred. Today, Schulte Angus Ranch continues to evolve by incorporating Angus sires and technology such as genetic testing, ultrasounds, and embryo transfers. Numbering north of 120 head, they continue to be involved showing Angus cattle in the local, state, and national shows as well as offering bulls and heifers every year for sale at private treaty while also consigning bulls and pens of heifers to the Nebraska Classic.

GARDELS LAZY FOUR ANGUS

The Gardels have been raising registered Angus since 1960. Throughout those years, they have prioritized raising cattle that will perform in all segments of the beef industry. The bulls receive no creep feed in the summer and are not pushed hard to gain fat. Resulting in bulls that are structurally sound, athletic, and will adapt to different range conditions. Their cow herd is equally as important, and strive to raise females that have longevity, currently owning two 13 year olds that are still holding up very well. Docility is another critical factor and hot heads they do not tolerate. Watch for the Gardels next production sale on March 16th 2024.

delivering bulls to customers, they drove by what was to become their home and current location near Miller. Aside from developing heifers utilizing almost 100% AI, they also offer freeze branding, pelvic measuring, and breeding tract scoring, weaning & backgrounding, and high-accuracy pregnancy checks with ultrasound. Moreover, what they do daily is focused on what they do with their cattle and the cattle entrusted to them. So last year, they scaled back their farming operations, focusing on gaining faster genetic improvement, mainly by ET in their Angus herd. They also decided to add a fall calving herd to produce better cattle as quickly as possible. Aside from that new fall calving, they also have another season in April and will sell coming twoyear-olds in their sale scheduled for December 9th. The rain from last night added to the muddy mess, so Kaleb took us in groups via 2 tractor-drawn wagons around their facility while the other group visited the Wood River Dairy. Once the tour of Key Ranch facilities was over, they dropped us off for lunch, and the group returning from the dairy went on the tour. Derek and I were also going to head to the dairy, but a big bonus for us was that Loretta Kuck (Kaleb’s Grandmother) plus her daughter and all-around gatekeeper, Gina, were here today, too. We did a story on the Kucks a couple of years ago, and Loretta still calls me occasionally. Gina was also very helpful in developing that article, so some face time with both was much appreciated. Of course, we lost track of time since we had such a great visit with them. So, the tour left without us, but we had a pretty good idea of where we were going next…

We met Kaleb & Erin (owners of Key Ranch) last year during the tour, but Kaleb was no stranger to us at least. Either way, Derek and I were both looking forward to this stop. Kaleb grew up on a family farm near Bertrand (Kuck Ranch). Erin grew up on her family farm (Brad Z Ranch) in Guthrie Center, Iowa. The two met while Erin worked for Accelerated Genetics and visited Kuck’s about a bull. They dated long-distance for 2 ½ years and married in 2016. During the dating process, Kaleb learned about Erin’s dream of running a heifer development center. That was the plan set in motion around a decade ago. They ran it (the development center) out of a small 10x20 cabin that they also called home near Bertrand. One day, when they were out November 2023

As Dru mentioned in his opening statement, seeing so many people here (on the tour) was great. “We get hung up looking at videos and paper and forget to look at the cattle.” But the tours are not just about the cattle; it’s also time to see old friends like Ryan Large of Large’s Portable AI, whom we decided to meet up with for dinner before the next tour. Hopefully, we will make new friends, like Nebraska Angus royalty, Kacey Dethlef (age 20, NE Angus Queen), and Brianna Brown (age 13, NE Angus Princess). They were with us the whole day and did a great job showing up and educating others about ranch life and Angus cattle. They spent the early part of the year going to bull sales, which isn’t required, but they both had a lot of fun connecting with those producers and helping bridge a gap between the Jr. and the “adult association.” Brianna taught life on the farm to elementary students from the city. Brianna and Kacey spent a lot of time together over the last year and built a nice friendship. Ryan Large clued me in on the fact that I had some dates wrong and, in doing so, gave us a whole extra day to get back to Montana for their Angus tour based in Billings. So, Derek and I had a nice leisurely drive, this time on Highway 26 past Van Newkirk Herefords, where we saw their sign. We stopped abruptly, had a quick, unannounced visit with Cindy, and enjoyed a great conversation. Then we ended up spending a few hours at Scotts Bluff (“the mountains of Nebraska,” as I like to call it) enjoying the scenery before arriving in Casper that evening. In the morning, we enjoyed another round of golf, thus crossing Wyoming off my list of states I’ve golfed in. The list is getting shorter! November 2023
