North Montana Angus Tour September 21-23 -- Great Falls, Montana P hotos by D e rek S ampl e Derek@ABPmag.com

by Tim McCray Tim@ABPmag.com

The Tours Tour Chapter 1: Montana After the MT Hereford tour finished up, we had a few days before we head to Great Falls for the next tour. So we took advantage of our airbnb’s dining room and named it ABP headquarters. We often get asked where we’re based out of, and I’ve been in the habit of answering that question with another question. The truth is, it’s where we’re at. In this day and age, we can and do work from wherever are, whether it be someone’s ranch, a hotel, or even Derek’s pickup. We spent the remaining weekdays making calls, doing layouts, and finishing up writing for our October issue. Both Derek and I were looking forward to visiting Glacier National Park on Saturday, as neither of us had been there. So we were slightly disheartened as we started our drive to the park entrance and noticed how smokey it was. In fact, as the day went on, the smokier it got. But we enjoyed Road-to-theSun nevertheless. We also drove to Many Glacier and found a road closed sign, which we ignored. That side of the park was beautiful. By the time we exited out the other side, it was a full-on steady rain. With that, we hoped tomorrow we could return. Next morning saw a continuation of the rain, so we quickly figured out Glacier was off the schedule, and went out in search of breakfast instead. Thanks to Derek making a right turn when we should have made a left 16

turn, we found ourselves passing the entrance to Montana Ranch. After a quick phone call to see if we could stop by, David said he didn’t have time that day, but would make it work the next… MONTANA RANCH Bigfork, MT MontanaRanchAngus.com David Brown is the Herd Manager at Montana Ranch which is surrounded by mountains and is picture perfect, even on a rainy day. The spot they’re in is known as noisy basin, one of the wettest in all of Montana. They get an average of 100 inches of snow, and none in any great increments, just an inch… every-single-day. The sale at Montana Ranch is “Bred for Balance, Different by Design”. They’ve adapted their herd to be rather unique. Starting with that they calve predominately in the summer – July and the first part of August. David also explained that he doesn’t strive for one particular trait and wants to be the middle of the road as far as genetic traits with sound, healthy, and good cattle. Montana ranch is no stranger to frequent guests, and I’ve never seen an operation quite like it. I thought it more resembled a golf course when we first arrived. David also shared his thoughts on advertising and let us know that he detests print. However, they still do it, because American Beef Producer

it really works. But he’s also got a social media account and has recently started a podcast – Angus Underground. It’s all marketing, and all of us believe that you must utilize all aspects available. But of course, watch your budget. Starting in 2022 they will host a Bull sale in March and a female sale in October. Arrive in Great Falls, Montana After visiting with Montana Ranch, we arrived in Great Falls that evening with just enough time to find dinner and get somewhat settled into our new (now smaller) Airbnb office space for the Montana Angus Tour. The next morning’s golf tournament came early. However, I got teamed up with Don Ravellette (Ravellette Publications) once again. Don and I played together a few years ago, on my last MT Angus tour and we won. The remaining two on this year’s winning team were Kris Todd (Green Mountain Angus) and John Flesch (Flesch Angus). They were par 3 courses and we won at only 3 under par. It’s all about fun, and as Kris pointed out to me – a year’s worth of bragging rights. The annual association banquet was held at a different golf course and attendees were fed a healthy portion of prime rib and the usual sides. Roger Jacobs once again did an outstanding job as emcee for the November 2021

evening as well as the whole tour. The following morning, 4 huge bus loads and a caravan of pickups left right on time. 6:30 has never felt good to me, and I’m sure there were more than 1 not feeling quite right that early in the morning following the events from last night. MALEK ANGUS RANCH Highwood, MT MalekAngusRanch.net Ty & Tami Malek hosted our breakfast stop and offered guests bloody marys and mimosas to start a kick into our steps. The breakfast was eggs and sausage plus biscuits & gravy. The Malek Angus herd is based on S Chisum 6175 who can be found in all of the pedigrees

of the Erica cow family. The Erica cows are the foundation of the Malek’s entire operation, with outstanding phenotype, performance and longevity. Their annual bull sale is the third Thursday in March. Driving to our next stop, the caravan stopped at some out of place rock formations on the side of the road. As people started getting off the busses, we wondered out loud what we were doing here. I think Derek even remarked he wasn’t going to get out of the truck. But curiosity got the best of us, and we too joined the crowd that had gathered around Roger’s pickup to give us the “lay

of the land” so to speak. While there weren’t cattle around, there were a few signs posted saying that this was private property and no one was allowed to trespass without permission. But, we had permission as a group to take a look and walk around a bit. Glad we got out of the truck. We certainly weren’t expecting cliffs over 250 feet high to a quite massive private lake. We also learned that there was quite a large wataerfall on one side, biggerthan Niagra Falls. Today it was more of a trickle… See the photo Derek took with his drone. It was quite windy that day and salt in the lake was blowing along lines atop the surface, it was really beautiful.

LOST LAKE RANCH Fort Benton, MT HarrersLostLakeRanch.com J.O. Patterson began this ranch in the late 1800’s, initially raising sheep and later Herefords. The headquarters of Lost Lake Ranch was one of Montana’s first post offices and stagecoach tracks remain within its boundaries. Eventually, the Harrer family took over, and it has remained Harrer’s Lost Lake Ranch since 1968 (a year after I was born, so that would make it 38 then). Dr. Grant and Deanna Harrer took over in the early 1990’s. The Angus produced by LLR have been selected for fertility, calving ease, explosive growth, carcass quality, soundness and disposition. AI has been an important tool for the Harrer’s and you can find a full list of sires on their website. The annual Harrer’s Lost Lake Ranch sale is held the fourth week of March at Western Livestock Auction in Great Falls. Also displaying at Harrer’s: WINDY RIDGE ANGUS Geraldine, MT Karen and Chuck Davis & family. As Chuck puts it “it’s his dirt and Karens cows”. Chuck manages the farming operation and ‘helps’ Karen with the cattle while the reverse is true about their operation. The farming they do limits the cows by lack of water and grassland. Consequently, they only keep the most productive cows and the ones that give them moderate birth weights, high gain potential, frame soundness, maternal strength and disposition. Karen is also the sister of Dr. Grant Harrer (see above). Karen and Chuck’s daughter Kara, along with her husband Jeff, manage LLR. 24

STONE‘S BLACKROCK CATTLE SBRcattle.com Owen and Meriel Stone began their seedstock operation in 2014; 105 years after the family farm was homesteaded. Their vision is quality cattle, local feed and reasonable prices. They produce for the commercial cattlemen and sell both registered and commercial. His cows have to prove themselves before he’ll even do paperwork on them. They offer a private treaty sale on a Saturday in early March. GRANGER ANGUS Great Falls, MT GrangerAngus.com Jim & Beth Granger displayed a section of their herd for us and provided a light snack and drinks. They’ve been in the cattle business since 1978, starting with a commercial herd and entering the registered business in 1995. They strive to produce the perfect cow for their environment which is on a north facing slope, 25 miles form Great Falls in the Little Belt mountains. Lots of snow that piles into drifts that last until May, then gives way to what they claim to be some of the best grasses in all of Montana. Their cattle have to be deep and thick, big boned and easy fleshing as they winter in summer country with plenty of wind. For over 20 years they 26

have marketed some of their bulls through Midland Bull Test and have been twice awarded Midland’s World Champion performance pen of three. They also market through Treasure Bull test as well as offering private treaty. OX BOW RANCH Wolf Creek, MT OxBowRanchAngus.com As if we hadn’t eaten enough all day long, Ox Bow ranch manager Marc Orem allowed us all to hang out and enjoy the beauty that this ranch is surrounded by. For at least an hour we had plenty of time to see that plus mix and mingle before dinner was served. Ox Bow is located along side Holter lake and the Missouri river, near Wolf Creek, MT. This ranch has been raising Angus cattle for over 20 years in steep rugged country with low rainfall. Most of the females trace back to Emulation EXT and Traveler 6807. The emphasis has been on maternal strength - fertile, easy fleshing, good uddered, moderate deep bodied, big ribbed cattle. In this country, hard days can mean dry summers or frigid cold winters. By selecting only the cattle that can perform in this environment, they should excel under most any range conditions, wherever they may go. The herd has to travel long distances

coming two-year-olds as well as around 1,200 females are offered in their sale every year, the last Saturday in January. CONNELLY ANGUS Valier, MT ConnellyAngus.com Don & Wendy Connelly and their entire family run ranching and farming operations on 500 registered cows – the result of 62 years in the cattle business. The farming involves spring wheat, malt barley, alfalfa and grass hay. Their breeding philosophy has always been producing problem free females with excellent longevity that can survive and excel in a commercial cattlemen’s environment. They believe in a moderate framed cow that milks well while holding her condition and consistently wean off a heavy calf. Connelly Angus produce an elite cow herd that can produce a consistent, quality product. “Genetics for the long run” is the name of their annual sale. With a cowherd based on Viking 977 GDAR and Traveler 1114 GDAR, you know that Connelly’s are in it for the long run. Their annual sale is the last Tuesday of February.

Our last stop of the MT Angus tour turned into an extended evening. I was busy talking with a few attendees and hosts that I didn’t manage much time with at all. Derek, unbeknownst to me was outside taking a few fantastic pictures of Connelly’s. The bus had left and we were still having a good time for another couple of hours. The number of people attending this tour ended up in the 250-300 range. There were a few repeat participants I knew from the last MT Angus tour, and of course we made some new friends along the way. Of course the real draw is the cattle and the many different operations you can visit in a short amount of time, plus getting fed and entertained for 2 full days. Montana can offer some of the more scenic options in cattle tours, but I’m finding I like each of them in their own unique and special way. Since our October issue was now out of our hands, we had a few days to explore and enjoy. I managed another quick 9 holes at a local golf course while we were between hotels. We managed an hour or so in downtown Bozeman, checked out Big Sky and even managed to binge watch the majority of Squid Game at our Airbnb in Gallatin Gateway while working at half speed for a few days.

Derek made some new friends at Cooper Herefords Ranch

COOPER HEREFORDS Willow Creek, MT CooperHerefords.com Having met Dave Hanson on the MT Hereford tour the week before, both Derek and I knew we couldn’t leave the area without a visit to Cooper’s. Dave gave us a tour of the ranch and pastures, the rundown on day-to-day operations around the ranch, and how they fared in this year’s drought. About halfway into our drive, we ran into Katie (Cooper) who was out checking on some cows, minerals and fences. From there, the conversation seemed to turn into how much work Katie and her older sister Kelsy contribute to the operation. Eventually we all ended up back at home base and soon after joined by Kelsy and Mark. Within the past few months, I seem to have had a few conversations about passing a ranch on to kids, brothers, etc, and the trouble that can sometimes cause between families. Mark gave some advice, that I simplified a bit, but basically said “Keep the goal in mind, there’s more than one wayto reach that, and don’t be so critical of one another.” November 2021

The agenda for the next day was making our way to our next tour in Nebraska which took us through Yellowstone. We had thought about making a few stops in Wyoming along the way. Entering the park, they give you a map and a small newspaper. I glanced over the first few pages and quickly discarded the newspaper as I can read a map. Our plan was to take the northern loop from the west entrance all the way around to Old Faithful, then either out the south entrance or back to the east entrance. We reached the east entrance only to find the road ahead closed since April 1. After some expletives out of both of us and complaining how there was no signs alerting us to road closed ahead, we turned around to drive back to Old Faithful. Of course, Derek stopped at one of the geysers and took a badass shot of it blowing out during sunset. While driving by he saw the shot he wanted to take, made a u-turn, got out 2 cameras, moved to the front of the crowd and took 50 shots. Then within 24 hours, his chosen photo had more than 8,000 likes on his Facebook page (Derek Sample Photography). Also visit www.DerekSample.com

Faith, Family, Freedom, Farm & Ranch “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future” — Jeremiah 29:11 When Derek and I were visiting the Amdahl’s earlier this year in preparation for this story, Tim had voiced a statement that at age 66, what is worth doing in life with the time you have left. So when prepping for this story, I asked him that question back. His answer was that he had wrestled with that question a bit, but what they value most in life: God, Family, Country, Ranching. So rather than write a story that goes from A to B in a straight line, I was inspired to do things a little differently, and focus on those 4 aspects of the Amdahls. Because, when you get right down to it, you can look at a man’s values and sometimes quickly learn who he is. I’ve also interjected some of my own memories as: 1. I felt inspired to do so and 2. It seemed relevant to the “story” and I’ll try not to confuse you. Those thoughts of mine are in italics…

Faith

You won’t be speaking with Tim or Marcia Amdahl very long before you realize they are very convicted in their love of God, their love of family, and their love of ranching. It’s easy to have faith and talk about it when things are good. But when things go bad, that’s a true test of your faith. Even in the darkest of times, he has plans to make us prosper. The Amdahl beef story goes back to 1884 when it was started and homesteaded in Flandreau, SD. Nearly 100 years later - in 1972, Tim Amdahl’s father Oliver was marketing Amdahl beef through a reefer truck while delivering to families, restaurants and grocery stores in the northern Midwest. That same year, Tim Amdahl purchased his first registered Angus. Four years later, as the nation celebrated its bi-centennial, Tim won the Star Farmer of America for his excellence in beef, marketing, and promotion of agriculture. Two years later, he was the first to do an embryo transplant in South Dakota. A year after that, he married Marcia, a nurse, and started raising a family. As Marcia puts it, “we raised cows and kids.” 34

By the time the family had moved to New Underwood in 1991, he had grown his herd to and was marketing 160 bulls annually. In 1994 the Amdahl’s were taken by a modern day cattle rustler. Struggling to recover in a down cattle market till 1999, they dispersed their herd of Angus & sold the ranch to pay all they owed. Tim says, “we started over with 2 old horses, 2 old cars and 5 healthy kids.” When God shuts a door, He opens a window Starting over moved them back east, near Mitchell, SD. Tim then received another type of calling. Someone suggested he enter politics again. In 2001/2002 ran for congress and lost to the sitting governor. As he was looking around one day, with 5 kids and their cars. “the place looked like a used car lot”. With gas at a premium back then, he started chasing diesel Volkswagens, reselling them and gaining some equity which eventually got him back into owning some cattle. During this time frame the kids all learned how to ride horses, 4 wheelers, drive pickups, and feed cattle with tractors and wagons. The family worked hard and built their herd back up, but they didn’t have a lot of acreage

to support their operation, so they leased quite a bit. “We also prayed” Tim said, “that we could have the opportunity to utilize more of your acres, more of the ground that You created.” Then opportunity knocked again. They had a moving west sale and dispersed about half their herd to purchase the Baker Hereford place (and everything with it, including some Herefords) in Piedmont, SD, near Rapid City, where they are today.

Family

When I was young, dinner time was sometime after my dad got home from work. On holidays we usually had guests or went to someone else’s house as guests. I can vividly remember dinner at my grandma’s house, with an extended family made up of my aunts and uncles, and sometimes cousins - that were older, like my brother. But we all got along, until it was time to clean up. It was sometimes just as frantic at the beginning – gathering 12 of us (or more) around a dinner table built for 2 that extended to seat 6. Derek and I were waiting in the Amdahl’s dining room for Tim to finish cooking the steaks he was making for lunch (on the new Traeger grill the kids had bought for him at Christmas). I was noticing their dining room table. It had a plastic cover on it, just like my grandma used to have. Only it wasn’t just for easy clean up, it held the 50 or so pictures of family underneath it and were arranged in a random scattered order. Imagine sorting through family photos and scattering them on the table as you’re starting to organize, and then some creepy kid (probably me, I was usually blamed anyway)

would come up and mess them all up and run away. Then Marcia came and put the clear plastic cover over it. “That table has entertained everyone” Marcia says, “they’re all looking for their pictures when they come over”. Everything happens around food in the Midwest, so it’s only natural that it happens around the dinner table as well. My brain suddenly triggers back to my grandma’s house. “Can I help you with anything?” I asked. “Nope, you’re our guest” Marcia answered. The Amdahl’s have an amazing story, and an amazing family. Tim and Marcia had 5 kids: Jessica, Megan, Heather, TJ and JD so that makes 7. Then there’s the 17 grandchildren. So that brings their total to 24. So, Derek and I started asking questions. What are your kids up to now? Where do they live? Are they close by? Jessica and her husband worked as missionaries, in South America but due to tropical diseases

and everything else, they’re currently living in South Carolina where she works as a real estate agent. Megan and her family have a ranch near Wall, SD. Heather and her family have a ranch in Opal, SD. Eldest son TJ is In the Navy, and JD and his family are here on the ranch. Marcia said “I prayed that the girls would all meet good Christian men for husbands, but I didn’t expect them all at once.” All 3 girls were married in an 18-month span. Tim likes to say “they have 10 kids – 5 of them are in-laws, but they’re still my family.” Do you ever have EVERYONE over? Or how many have you had here at once? “It’s really hard to get everyone over as our schedules don’t all line up” Marcia says “but yeah, we’ve had quite a few. It’s first come first serve for the bedrooms. Whoever reserves it [the guestrooms] first.” That must be a lot of work, feeding that many all at once. How do you do it? Marcia: “I’ve done a lot of cooking all my life, my mom did a lot, my daughters (& in laws), all pitch in. I grew up with 4 brothers, and my mom had 38

something like 50 first cousins so I grew up with a lot of big family get togethers. I’m used to big family get togethers, and cooking for a bunch.” 17 grandkids - Do you ever forget names, or mix them up? “Oh sure, all the time, not on purpose though. They just look at me cross eyed and say GRANDMA!” I mix up mine all the time, but it’s not all my fault. My own daughter’s name begins with a K, and her 3 kids too. So now I just give them numbers… and I’m soon to be up to 5! My mind plays tricks on me… Marcia has a “chart” as she calls it, hanging on the wall that her daughters had given her to keep track of all the birthdays, anniversaries, and important dates that parents and grandparents shouldn’t forget. I thought it was a little more elaborate, but I guess a calendar works too. By now, dinner is ready (and you know what’s for dinner) and we were joined by JD, who came all the way from next door after checking on his wife who’s expecting their second child (17th grandchild) in a few short weeks.

politics on Tim Amdahl’s mind these days. But there’s more to freedom than politics obviously. I can tell he’s concerned about many issues, like how the press isn’t Tim says he climbed out of the pickup and accurate anymoree, like the politics of beef processing, tractor in 1986 and ran for office. “My ignorance got me elected. I didn’t know it at the time, but you and if anyone is going to do anything, it better be quick before there aren’t any beef producers left. don’t run against an incumbent in the same party.” Tim mentioned to me that the older he gets, Still, he spent $10,000 for his campaign, compared the more he understands his father, and it makes sense to $300,000 used against him. At 31, he was the youngest to ever get elected to the Commissioner of now. I’d say the same thing about myself and my dad, Schools and Public Lands, which he received some although I’m still trying to define what “It” is. For Tim and Marcia, I think “It” could mean that he’s started criticism for as he was home schooling his own children. But, as Tim explained, “it’s not a position marketing his own beef to local buyers, like his own father did back in the 70’s. There’s some math involved for setting school policy, but rather a position to raise money for public schools.” During his time in here, but basically Tim figured out that if they were that office, he generated a record amount of income marketing their own beef to local residents, they were making an additional $2.50 a pound. So he and Marcia for that department. They got baptized hard into had some flyers printed up about what they do on their politics “we got a psychology lesson, and a lesson ranch, how their animals are raised, and of course how on people. You find out who your friends are, who you can trust. After serving 1 term, he was also the the consumer can get in touch with them and place their order. The foundation of their program Tim said “Back in the 80’s the people were is to use genetics that are so strong and powerful that saying to stay out of politics because it was so every calf looks like another. Which has been a result dirty. Now we’re trying to take it back because we of early and often DNA testing. They also do AI and stayed out too long.” There’s a whole new set of

ET on about 75% of their herd and the conception rates from those are 80% and 70% respectively. They find they get their best calves out of the first calf heifers, because its new genetics and they breed them to something that should be consistent. That consistency is a result of being one of the most DNA tested herds in the country. Which ensures the predictability of calving ease, carcass traits, maternal traits and performance. Producing offspring that will thrive across the country delivering a proven accurate product to the customer. This year’s sale is offering some of the first calves out of Baldridge Flagstone and Sitz Resilient as well as GAR Ashland. Their relationship with Green Mountain Angus Ranch (Ryegate, MT) had led them to Flagstone to try him in their own program. “The bull and heifer calves coming out of him are tremendous” Tim points out as we’re driving around his pastures. Speaking of pastures, the Amdahls manage about 6000 acres of leased and owned land. About 75% of that is pastures. The remaining are used for corn, barley, alfalfa, peas, or anything that they can get to grow and put up. Tim pointed out that he had planted some Triticale in with some alfalfa a few years ago and didn’t get a very good stand. This year, however, it decided to grow, but by then he had already had his corn in. The drought has been hard on practically everyone this year and the Amdahl’s are no exception. They’ve managed to succeed in only about 40% of their usual crop, and that output has only been about half of typical. So they‘re down to about 25% of what normal is. They’ve resorted to buying some standing corn that didn’t have ears on it and made some silage, bought some alfalfa hay 40

and some crop hay to supplement. He thinks they’re sitting pretty good right now, but it was an added expense they hadn’t planned on. Moving to the other side of the hypothetical pasture. His Herefords are primarily Holden & Cooper line 1 genetics, as they were when Baker’s had them. But he’s also brought in some polled influence lately from some outside sires of Cuda, Uproar and Sensation. The Herefords are about 25% of his overall herd, but he’s found several of his Angus customers want a Hereford bull or 2, and they get some free hybrid vigor, more weight and hardiness by cross breeding. Tim, who is now 66, is starting to take on a new position. He says “I’ve stepped into more of a senior partner role” by allowing JD to step in and start running things. JD had finished a brief stint in high school to play football. His plans were always to eventually come back to the ranch but was hoping for a football scholarship and of course a dream to play in the NFL. Another old saying is if you want to give God a laugh, tell Him what your plans are. So, after a few concussions he did a short Ag internship in Minnesota, then was brought back home. That decision to return to the ranch was a big part of the Amdahl’s move to Piedmont. JD has his own ideas and goals for Amdahl Angus & Hereford. He hopes to expand their numbers within a few years, and of course continue with the program his father has taught him. Consistency is a big part of the Amdahl philosophy as that‘s one thing I’ve noticed about Tim, Marcia and JD. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and JD’s values are a mirror image of his father. Marcia is already taking inventory for their sale in a little over a month and will shortly begin meal prep as well. Something else that she’s consistently done for many years. Be sure to stop out and see Tim, Marcia, JD and Annie at their sale on November 20th! Check our their Sale Ad on page 5.

Nebraska Angus Tour October 1 & 2 - Chadron, Nebraska P hotos by D e rek S ampl e Derek@ABPmag.com

by Tim McCray Tim@ABPmag.com

Chapter 2: Nebraska Leaving Yellowstone through the west entrance at night made my imagination run with the surrounding terrain. Even after we got out of the park it was mountainous and windy – a drive I need to do again in the daytime. But we ended up in Cody for the night then on to Chadron, NE the next day. Wyoming got to be very flat and nothing seemed interesting enough to watch the scenery go by. I saw a lot of dirt and rock, not too much for grass or life. But as soon as we crossed the border into Nebraska, about an hour or so to our destination, we got back into interesting country. Looking more like the black hills of South Dakota, but smaller, anyone who’s been there knows it doesn’t resemble the rest of the state much, but it was rather striking. The Nebraska Angus tour kicked off with another golf tournament. Where again I won a cash prize. In fact, everybody that attended won cash. For a $35 entry fee, we each received a $60 gift card for Bomgaars, a midwestern chain of farm and ranch stores, without swinging a club or making a putt. Back to the hotel after to quickly grab lunch, Derek and I were out on tour heading to our first stop at Crawford Livestock Market. That went rather quickly as they were very busy. Then our next stop was around the parking lot on the other side of the trees, as in very close. 46

GRAY ANGUS RANCH

Harrison, NE www.GrayAngusRanch.com Rod Gray brought a selection of herd bulls & calves from his ranch south of Harrison to the rodeo grounds for display. He also brought along his entourage of family members (Laura, Colt, Riyatta, Kierra, Heath, Garrett and Chisum) that help on the ranch as well. Chisum, who is now 10, entertained us all with some roping demonstrations, and I think he started teaching a class for some of the tour attendees. I don’t think he missed roping that dummy one time and there sure seemed to be a lot of interest from young and old alike. Gray’s Angus has roots that go back to 1898 when the family registered their first Angus breeding stock. Rod is the 5th generation of Gray’s in the cattle business. Originally from Iowa, with a short stop in eastern Nebraska, he and the family moved again in 1997 and brought his operation to western Nebraska. Rod and his brother introduced AI to the herd 45 years ago. Still today, most of his cows can trace back to the herd that his grandfather ran in the 1920’s. They strive to produce a combination of balance and performance in their herd. They sell about 150 yearling bulls as well as 50 two-year-old bulls in their sale at their ranch on the 3rd Saturday each March. American Beef Producer

CHADRON STATE COLLEGE

Chadron, NE www.csc.edu Dr. Jim O’Rourke & Ron Bolze gave us a brief history on the range program at CSC, as well as an overview of the complex and courses. CSC has a long tradition in range management. The Coffee Family Foundation Range Complex and Agriculture Pavilion is built on coursework that has been a mainstay in their agriculture program. The standard degree offered at CSC is a Bachelor of Science in Rangeland Management with options in Rangeland Ecology, Rangeland Livestock Management, Rangeland Fire Management or Rangeland Wildlife Management. While also offering minors in Agriculture Plant Science, Equine Management, Rangeland Management, Veterinary Science and Wildlife Management. The range program is arguably the largest in the world, second only to Texas A&M but only because they have multiple campuses. They designed the program to take students that are coming off the ranch and then send them back to the ranch. But for us on the tour, they’re sending us to the college ballroom for dinner and some guest speakers. The highlight of the night was Paul Dykstra who had recent numbers November 2021

SELLMAN RANCH

Crawford, NE SellmanRanch.com Butch, Gail, Adam and Jodi welcomed us to their ranch for breakfast and after the family introductions, gave us a brief history. They really enjoy ranching and the seedstock business, and Butch has been in it all of his life. His dad was president of the American Hereford association in 1964, the same year as their first production sale in New Mexico. In 1972, they moved to western Nebraska to find better grasses, and a better place to raise a family. They switched over to Angus because they were just easier to sell. When they decided to make the switch, they had found someone in Texas that had offered to buy his Herefords, even allowing Butch to keep his top 10 since November 2021

he had been in the business for so long. Today they run about 500 cows, 30-40 being Hereford, and another 300 registered Angus. They also buy 1500 head of yearling cattle and sell a few as fat cattle in April and go to grass with a lot of them. In addition, they also offer club calves and sell private treaty throughout the year. Their annual sale is held at the Crawford Livestock Market the second Friday in April.

Married to Kami (Krebs), he’s much more than part of the army that keeps this ranch and the Sire services operating. A growing part of the business is the semen sales on all of the herd sires they offer. In 2018, they made a pretty big change to their program in the way they produce the bulls for their sale. Nearly 50% of the bulls in their sale come from an ET program so that they could maximize the quality and performance of their offerings, concentrating on the most elite and most productive functional cows. Bulls are a big part of what they do, as well as the female side of their operation. While they don’t have an annual auction for females, they do offer registered females for sale. On average, they offer 100-125 of registered bred heifers. In addition, they do a complete calendar year dispersal of a group of cows. This year they are offering all their 6 year old cows. Both groups of females are available via private treaty. Krebs Ranch annual bull sale is February 17th, 2022 WESTERN SIRE SERVICES Gordon, NE WesternSireServices.com Western Sire Services was founded in 2007 when Eldon and Louisa Krebs (of the previously mentioned Krebs Ranch) envisioned a custom collection facility that could provide the semen needed in their own Angus operation, as well as serving the needs of other commercial and purebred ranchers in the region. As for his Angus herd, he’s got 3 herd bulls he uses; Casino Bomber from Vermillion Angus, A Titus bull that they themselves raised and S&R Solidarity that he picked up from a friend. They also AI about 85%, don’t sync and he uses a gomer bull for heat detection. As for their AI sires, Growth Fund is a CONROY ANGUS recent one to them this year, and they’re getting some Gordon, NE real good calves out of him as well as Enhance & Trap Maynard, Deb and their son Rhett primarily handle the day-to-day activities at their ranch. However, per as a few others. He feels like he’s seeing enough their other son Chris, his wife Brooke, and Deb’s mom growth in his calves so now he’s been focusing more on carcass traits. They’ve pregged a little over 150 cows Gwen are all here today too and I know Chris helps this year and are expecting to have about 50 bulls in out when he’s needed. Gwen, I’m pretty sure was just his upcoming sale. In 2020 his sale date happened the there to raise everyone’s blood sugar with the homemade cream puffs she was pushing. I started with one, day before everything got shut down for covid. Then walked off to talk to someone and turned back to grab this year, his sale happened a day before that bomb another. Later I heard there were carmel ones too…so cyclone hit his area. I told Maynard he had better hold of course I HAD to go try those. I saw Derek steal one on to that sale date: the 2nd Tuesday in March. when nobody was looking, then he asked for more. To begin their operation, Maynard had purchased 11 head VIN - MAR CATTLE COMPANY from Raymond Andrews dispersal in 1985. He worked Gordon NE VinMarCattle.net on another ranch for about 13 years during that time Vince & Mary, along with their sons Ryan & Bryand then decided to return to teaching to get some benefits. They bought the ranch where they’re at now as son, own and operate Vin-Mar CC. The herd began a result of that growing herd, and in December of 2018 with the acquisition of the River Ranch Herd from Whitestone – Krebs in December of 2001. to create great females. They must be fertile, and they must milk and flesh easily. The cows are not babied at all meaning they must survive all summer long on grass and water only by traveling in and around large pastures. This they feel is the most effective, natural way to raise large athletic cattle. They’re also focused on the same traits in their bulls: Thick, highly fertile and athletic for their customers. They continued to grow their herd by adding cows and bulls from several top breeders in the area, utilizing both ET and AI from their own sires as well as bull studs. Clint & Suzy are both quite active in the NE Angus Association, and Suzy served 2 terms as the West District Director. Last year they were awarded Producer of the Year from the Association. “We built our new ABS Global Calf Facility in the summer of 2016. This was the first time we utilized anything except steel at one of our facilities and it was a hard sell to the staff. However, after meeting with Travis at TJ’s Fencing in Harpers Ferry, and having him bring a gate home to show the staff, we were sold. We utilize more than 200 different sizes of gates, all purchased from TJ’s Fencing and installed by Cliff ’s Incorporated from Friesland, WI. The gating is holding up very well. We intend to expand our calf facility this summer and will definitely continue utilizing TJ’s Fencing for the gating.” - Jim Meronek, Health Assurance, Production and Supply Chain Director ABS Global, Inc DeForest, WI

SimAngus-sired steer calves sold through Superior Livestock Auction earn more at sale time than all other calves.b It’s no wonder the percentage of SimAngus calves marketed through the industry’s largest video auction has grown eightfold since 2010.

Angus seedstock operation. The cowherd consists of 600+ spring and fall calved cows. In 2012 with the help of the NDSA they built a 999 head feedlot. The feedlot is used for sale cattle development and to finish nearly all the cattle that they cull. In turn, they market them directly to the packing plant. Which gives them tremendous insight into how their cattle perform in the feedlot and at the plant. Their production sale this year will offer coming 2-year-old bulls, bred heifers and bred cows. FARNSWORTH ANGUS RANCH (Display) McHenry, ND Evan Farnsworth is a 4th generation rancher whose great grandfather started out as a commercial cow-calf operation. That commercial herd was passed down eventually to Evan;s dad Ed. Ed was also with us today, though he retired in 2017 and passed the operation onto Evan. The registered Angus herd started in the fall of 2005 while Evan was still in high school. At the time he was working for Spickler Ranch. He made sure to thank both Nathan & Justin Spickler, as well as Paul & Ryan Topp for getting

foundation of the JAR herd. Today that herd consists of 350 Angus mother cows and has developed into a multi-generation operation. Darrell’s parents Harold & Carol, Darrell’s wife Deb, and their children Jamie (Eric), Jessica (Taylor) and Jason are all part of the operation. Always striving to improve their breeding program, JAR’s mission is to breed for functional cattle that cover everything from eye appeal, carcass quality, performance, and longevity. They strive to stay true to their breeding program goals and raise cattle that go out and work, whether that’s in the pasture, feedlot or showring. This year’s production sale will feature approximately 80 fall and spring born bulls and a select group of bred and open females. Check out their sale ad in this issue, and their sale at the ranch January 16th, 2022. The Bina Charolais Powerhouse Bull Sale will be held in Jamestown, ND on Feb 15th. ELLINGSON SIMMENTALS Dahlen, ND EllingsonSimmentals.com Terry Ellingson, his wife Dee Ann, and son John were on hand to welcome us to their stop on Monday afternoon. It was hard to miss the Valdres rose patterns of Norway that adorned the face of the event center. Terry also made sure we went to check out his mooring stone near the entrance to the event center as well. Terry grew up with Angus, then shorthorns, and finally was milking cows until 1990 when he and Dee Ann went to finish their degrees at Virginia Tech. They needed to sell off their dairy cows, and Terry told his dad to pick any breed of cattle he wanted. His father picked Simmentals (because he fancied blondes) which they had gotten from Kenner Simmentals (tomorrow’s stop) & also Marvin Ritz of Almont. Since then, he’s focused hard on performance and watches carcass too, but he 68

knew his cattle had to grow. He also knew with his dairy herd that through AI he could focus in on some traits – they were the highest producing milking herd when they sold their dairy cows. The herd has grown to 150 cows of both black and reds. The goal has always been to produce high performance cattle with calving ease. The use of ultrasound technology has allowed carcass information to be included in data collection of all bulls and heifers. The 22nd annual Ellingson Simmentals Performance Bull and Female Sale will be held at the event center (at the ranch) on January 21st. GRASSY MEADOW RANCH Michigan, ND FB: GrassyMeadowRanch David & Karissa Daws had bought their first few Red Angus together before they were married. David grew up with Angus, and Karissa grew up on a dairy farm that also had some Red Angus/Hereford crosses and Red Angus/Charolais. Their ranch is very family oriented, and with four little ones around helping out, docility is a must. Their focus has been on adding more power and frame to their herd. They use AI and

ET extensively to keep their genetics moving forward quickly. Their main sire is Powerkind, a bull they had purchased out of Wyoming a few years ago. They also have some Bieber Atomic and Stock Market calves on display as well. They’re 11 years into their operation now and will host the 6th annual production sale at their ranch on January 8th. LAZY W ANGUS RANCH Cando, ND LazyWAngusRanch.com Wayne & Marguerite Freund family started the herd in 1962 with the purchase of 5 Angus heifers. A bull came next with bloodlines from Peace Garden Eileenmere OSY, which became the foundation bloodlines of their herd. Their goal is to raise functional females that calve on their own, unassisted, and raise a calf that will thrive in the pasture. Other notable sires include Hi Guy, Viking, Patriot, Krugerrand & Objective. At this time the ranch is run by Jason, Tom, Judy, Joseph, Eliza and Cecelia Freund, in addition to Wayne & Marguerite. Most, if not all of the “kids” are here today. I think it was Kathleen I met, who it turns out doesn’t live that far away from me back home in Minnesota. Wayne used to volunteer at the local fire department, which helps explain the few old fire trucks on the ranch. He’s still active on the ranch, as is Marguerite whom I guess mow every bit of grass she can find. They have been selling bulls since the 70’s and are currently selling by private treaty.

JOHNSON BROTHERS ANGUS Egeland, ND FB: JohnsonBrosAngus Also on display at Nelson’s is Jeremy & Nathan Johnson. The Johnson farm has been in the family since 1912, raising small grains, commercial and registered Angus. The brothers breed for structural soundness & maternal ability. Their cows perform on a roughage-based diet. They AI their heifers and a large percentage of their cow herd. They choose their bulls to enhance maternal ability and produce quality calves that excel in the feedlot. They sell bulls and replacement heifers by private treaty. McCUMBER ANGUS RANCH Rolette, ND mccumberangus.com Chuck & Gail Tastad along with their son and daughter in law Matt & Cynthia make up the 2nd and 3rd generation on the ranch. Chuck and his father started with the purchase of 5 half-sisters from a local breeder as an FFA project. Today, a majority of the cowherd will trace back to 2 of those original females. They are represented by the Miss Wix and Rosetta cow families. They focus on breeding cattle that will work in a forage environment and not only survive, but thrive. They want a productive, problem-free, easy-fleshing female that is fertile and long lasting.

NELSON ANGUS Egeland, ND NelsonAngus.com Started in 1961 by Otto and Sharon Nelson with the purchase of 3 cows and a bull. From the beginning it was a family affair with all 5 of Otto & Sharon’s children taking active roles on the ranch as well as 4-H and FFA activities. Mike & Dan were given the reigns in 1997 and have since have been utilizing new technologies and top new genetics to the herd. Currently they run about 150 mother cows and 35 replacement heifers a year. They calve from February to April. They AI about 75% of the cows and all the replacement heifers before turning them out on grass pasture. They primarily market through the Pearls of The Prairie Angus sale (Mandan, ND) in November. As well as their production sale at the ranch on March 12th. November 2021

Their annual production sale will offer the top 2/3 of their bull calf crop as well as a large group of ET full brothers. In addition, they will offer a select group of registered and commercial heifers. Their sale is at the ranch on the 4th Wednesday of March. GURR LAKE ANGUS Rolette, ND GurrLakeAngus.com Steve & Jo Gilje & family took over daily operations in 2003, but the Gilje family has been farming the area since 1888. The first registered Angus were purchased from McCumber in 1999, with additional bred heifers from Van Dyke Angus in 2000 and 2001. Since then their registered herd has grown and replaced the commercial cattle. Their focus has always been on producing trouble free females. They develop bulls with a little less emphasis on feed and gain than most operations. Grass is the main ingredient in beef and is the most efficient method of harvesting rain and sunshine. They recently began offering freezer beef directly to consumers and sell USDA inspected Gurr Lake beef at a few farmers markets. They offer around 20 bulls and a smaller offering of 2-year-olds each spring private treaty. KENNER SIMMENTAL RANCH Leeds, ND kennersimmental.com Roger, Jeanette & Erika have been raising Simmental and Sim Angus since 1974. The herd consists of 450 registered Simmental and Sim Angus cows that are red and black, with a small herd of registered Red Angus. The Kenners use extensive AT, ET and DNA technology to keep making better genetics. They farm grain as well and raise all their own feed. Roger sold bulls private treaty until 1996 when the decision was made to host a production sale. That tradition continues, and this year marked the 25th annual sale which is held at the ranch the second Saturday in February. Epilogue: That wrapped up all the stops for the 2021 All Breeds Cattle Tour held every year the beginning of October. This was the warmest year of all the tours that I’ve been on. We’re usually bundled up pretty good on this tour but I was in a t-shirt for most of it this year. The NDSA puts on a great tour every year and is well attended by staff & board members. Every stop they thanked the association for their dedication and hard 70

work. Justin Spickler went on to say “When you’re not active, nothing gets done, and these guys (NDSA) are active all the time”. Any number of NDSA members is jumping from one event to the other and each one is well managed and well attended. I finally got around to talking with currant NDSA President Jeff Schafer at one of the stops. I asked about the set-up of the tour and how they manage to keep it free for participants. On top of that there’s any number of door prizes spread throughout the tour and also at the final stop are the “grand prizes”. Jeff ’s answer was “we have an amazing group of sponsors” and the NDSA has worked very hard at those relationships with not only the sponsors, but also the members as well. Julie Ellingson and Jeff Schafer both gave speeches at Grassy Meadow’s dinner stop which also had one of the largest American Flags as a backdrop that I’ve ever seen up close. Both Julie and Elizabeth Nesham were on board for the entire tour from the office, and you can really tell they love what they do. So, a personal thank you from us to you for all you do. There’s a couple of grand prizes for this tour as we’re wrapping up things at Kenner’s. There’s a $250 cash prize this year for anyone that pre-registered, and an Ironside grill for anyone that registered. Andrew Swanson from Select Sires missed out on the cash prize last year because he wasn’t present at time of drawing. You have to be present to win, so he made sure he was sticking around this year and made sure to tell everyone he was taking that grill home. The $250 cash prize was finally awarded to Derek Sample! Who’s a winner already just because he gets to drive me around for 3 weeks, but I let him keep it, he works hard sometimes. Actually, to be honest I couldn’t have asked for a better business partner! Then a few more names were drawn (again, have to be present to win) and gues who’s name was drawn? Andrew Swanson finally got to take his grill home. Later we departed Kenner’s and Derek drove me back to my home in Minnesota, arriving very late that evening. Derek stayed for a couple of days to visit some family and then drove back to Montana Ranch for their Live Embryo Sale on the 13th. Then he visited some other ranches on the way back to his home in California. After 3 weeks of touring (5 weeks for Derek), we came back with many new friends and lots of new subscribers alike. Thank you again to the Montana Hereford and Angus Associations, Nebraska Angus Association, North Dakota Stockmen’s Association for hosting such amazing tours again!
