physicians, negative reviews can be frustrating because of concerns about how these may impact patient satisfaction scores or may not reflect the actual care provided. There is reason to be concerned. A recent Mayo Clinic Proceedings study1 showed that non-physician variables—such as interactions with desk staff, appointment access, waiting time, and billing— can appear to reflect unfairly on negative physician reviews. According to a 2014 JAMA article1, nearly 20% of surveyed patients said that physicians’

in four years for PLHS and the second time in three for Brookings. What allows these small, independent rural hospitals to continue to thrive while so many others are forced to sell out or fold? For insights, we turned to two people who have made these hospitals their professional homes.

AVERA

REGIONAL INDEPENDENTS & THE VA

As a resource for people in many Midwestern communities struck by flooding, wet conditions, and a volatile ag environment, Avera Health has created the Farm and Rural Stress Hotline. Farmers, ranchers and people who live in rural communities can call 1-800-691-4336 24 hours a day. The hotline is staffed by trained assessment counselors who put callers in touch with local mental health resources. Avera is one of only a few health systems nationwide with a hotline similar to this.

Regional Health has joined a new research initiative to help connect patients and patient data with ongoing research projects. The goal of the consortium is to utilize health information gathered by patients with tools like Fitbit and by doctors in the EMR system to improve the clinical trials process. In addition to Regional, the Baseline Consortium includes Vanguard Health Systems, Duke, Vanderbilt, the University of Mississippi, Mayo Clinic and the University of Pittsburgh. Verily, a subsidiary of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is the sponsor of the consortium.

A recent study by the Iowa Hospital Association indicates that Spencer Hospital generated nearly $46 million in economic impact for the local economy last year. The hospital association’s study compiles information on how Iowa hospitals impact the state’s economy, using data from the American Hospital Association. Brookings Health System has won a Gold Award in the website category in the national 2019 Aster Awards competition. To receive a Gold Award, an entry must be in the top 5% of 3,000 entries submitted from the US, Canada, and South America. The new brookingshealth.org was designed in partnership with Blend Interactive, a Sioux Falls-based web development company. The award was one of only 13 gold stars awarded nationally. The VA Black Hills Health Care System hosted a virtual town hall meeting in May to answer questions about the VA MISSION Act. Under the new program, eligible Veterans can receive care from a non-VA healthcare provider in their community. The VA Black Hills HCS spent the month of May preparing their staff. They serve approximately 22,000 veterans throughout a five-state region.

The sports medicine team is a collaboration between Black Hills Orthopedic & Spine Center, Black Hills Surgical Hospital, ProMotion Physical Therapy, The Rehab Doctors and Physio Performance. Black Hills Surgical Hospital has received the Healthgrades 2019 Patient Safety Excellence Award and the Healthgrades 2019 Outstanding Patient Experience Award. BHSH is among the top 2% of eligible hospitals in the nation to receive both awards. The facility is also one of only two South Dakota hospitals to receive the patient safety award in 2019 and the only West River hospital to receive the award.

APRIL WILLMAN Dr. April Willman has been selected as the 2019 Anton Hyden Memorial Award recipient by the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine. Willman, a pediatrician, has practiced at Yankton Medical Clinic, PC, since 2015 and serves as a clinical associate professor at USD SSOM. The Hyden award is presented to an inspiring USD SSOM professor selected by students of the junior and senior classes.

Yankton Medical Clinic, PC, has awarded six scholarships to area students. The scholarships are part of a 22-year-old program to promote higher education for students interested in the medical field. Applicants had to have a minimum GPA, engage in extracurricular and volunteer activities, and plan to work within 50 miles of Yankton. Recipients included four highschoolers, one nursing student, and one medical student. Sioux Falls native Dr. Alison R. Tendler has announced the opening of ART Vision eye care center and ARTISAN Skin and Laser Center on the second floor of the Galleria at 69th and Western on July 1. Dr. Tendler had been with Vance Thompson Vision for 13 years as a Cataract and Refractive, Cornea, and Oculoplastic Surgeon. SIOUX LAND ALYSSA SACKETT Alyssa Sackett, RN, BSN, is the new Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator at UnityPoint Health - St. Luke’s. The addition comes in response to an increasing volume of research that illustrates the importance of having a dedicated staff member whose sole focus is on ensuring the Emergency Department (ED) is “pediatric ready.” St. Luke’s is the only hospital in the state, and among only a handful nationwide, with a position like this.

BETH HUGHES Beth Hughes is the next president of Mercy Medical Center — Sioux City. Hughes was the vice president of hospital operations and strategy at The Advis Group in Mokena, Illinois. Prior to her current position, she served as president of St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. She joined Mercy in May.

JESICA HANSON Jesica Hanson is the new VP of Finance at Mercy Medical Center-Sioux City. Hanson has extensive experience in business plan development, revenue cycle analytics, operating and capital budgeting processes, and long range financial planning. She has a BS in business and economics from George Fox University and is a CPA.

Surgeons at MercyOne Siouxland performed their 2,000th robotic surgery in mid-May. MercyOne utilizes Intuitive’s da Vinci surgical system. Dr. Lawrence Volz (right) performed the 2000th surgery. Dr. Volz also performed the 100th robotic surgery. MercyOne performed a record 43 robotic cases in April.

STILIANOS EFSTRATIADIS Interventional cardiologist Stilianos Efstratiadis, MD, is the new Medical Director of Cardiology at MercyOne Siouxland Heart and Vascular Center. Having done over 10,000 procedures throughout his career, Dr. Efstratiadis will cover hospital rounds, outpatient clinics in Sioux City, and surrounding communities.

SANFORD

GIOVANNI CIUFFO Giovanni Ciuffo, MD, has been named the Medical Director of Cardiothoracic surgery at MercyOne Siouxland Heart and Vascular Center. Dr. Ciuffo trained in Italy and has practiced in New York and Ohio. Dr. Ciuffo is also trained in TAVR procedures.

MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center now provides lung cancer screening with a 128-slice CT scanning system. This technology is new to Siouxland hospitals and is the only method recommended for lung cancer screening in high risk patients. The system uses 75 percent less radiation than a regular CT scan and doesn’t require needle sticks. Current smokers or previous heavy smokers who have quit within the last 15 years, are eligible for the scan.

Sanford Health announced its partnership with Tyto Care, the healthcare industry’s first all-in-one modular device and telehealth platform for on-demand, remote medical exams. The partnership enables Sanford patients to remotely perform live, guided physical examinations with a Sanford doctor using the TytoHome exam kit and app and receive a diagnosis and prescription if needed. The home kit includes a camera, basal thermometer, otoscope and stethoscope adapters and a tongue depressor. Sanford is the exclusive TytoHome provider in the region.
