Planning a golf vacation this season? Allow me to make a suggestion: Michigan. The way I see it, if you’re going to golf, may as well golf some of the best courses in the U.S. And if you like to travel long distances to make it feel as though you went somewhere, visit the golf adventure that is the Upper Peninsula. Timberstone Golf Club in Iron Mountain has long been a favorite of Michiganders. Wisconsites rank it among their top choices, too. Timberstone is architect Jerry Matthews’ best work to date – the only golf course in Michigan to earn five stars from Golf Digest in 2004. Adding to the allure of the Upper Peninsula as a golf paradise is the new Mike DeVries design called Greywalls, a companion course to the Marquette Golf Club Heritage course, a mere 90-minutes north of Iron Mountain. Gothic may best describe the medieval feel of the Greywalls, an 18-hole dance with beast and beauty; rugged rock outcroppings with views of Lake Superior. Continuing east along the Superior shoreline delivers you to Brimley and Bay Mills Casino and Resort, home to Wild Bluff Golf Course. Wild Bluff offers views of Waishkey Bay and plays host to the Canadian PGA Tour equivalent of the Players Championship. Should your golf adventure allow time for a fourth course, hop on the ferry to the largest fresh water island in America, Drummond Island, and experience the challenge of The Rock at Woodmoor. Carved from 400 of the resort’s 2,000 acres, golf doesn’t get much more

secluded than this. As you enjoy this issue of Michigan Golf, you’ll discover that Timberstone and Greywalls rank among the Top Five of Michigan Golf’s Best Public Golf Courses in Michigan. Heading that list is Arcadia Bluffs, a golf experience all its own; a course worthy of its worldwide golf destination status. Seven of the Top 50 Michigan Public Golf Courses as rated by this publication make Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Courses” list. A golf vacation in Michigan not only makes economic sense, you’ll be hard pressed to find better golf wherever your travels take you. Michigan has long been lauded as a resort golf destination. Senior writer Don Vanderveen pays homage to the early days of Michigan resort golf and the pioneers that put the Wolverine State on the golf map: McGuire’s, Otsego Club, Gull Lake View and Garland. Per usual, only Michigan Golf provides you a directory to over 600 nine and 18-hole public courses, which can be readily accessed via our website at www.michigangolfmagazine.com. Don’t just play in 2006, make this golf season one to remember. Get out and explore Michigan in the manner you’ve long dreamed of – from a golf cart.

Treetops Named Michigan Course of the Year Lansing – The Michigan Golf Course Owners Association has bequeathed Treetops Resort the 2006 “Golf Course of the Year.” The Course of the Year Award honors a member meeting four criteria: exceptional quality of the course, exceptional quality of ownership and management, outstanding contribution to its community and significant contribution to the game. “To be honored by our peers in the state with arguably the greatest golf in the country is very humbling,” said Rick Smith, owner and managing partner of Treetops. “We take a great deal of pride in making sure that our golf product is the best that it can be and that it appeals to all demographics of golfers. Treetops works very hard at creating an atmosphere which is fun and non-intimidating.” Treetops Resort offers 81 holes of golf on such courses as Smith’s Signature course, the Robert Trent Jones Masterpiece, the Tom Fazio Premier and perhaps the most famous par 3 course in the land – Threetops, home of the Par 3 Shootout. Treetops placed three courses in the Top 25 of Michigan Golf’s Top 50 Public Golf Courses’ ranking. See page 20. Treetops is a year-round golf and ski resort with such amenities as 23 downhill ski runs, three restaurants, spa and fitness center, 240 guest rooms, newly remodeled suites and hospitality rooms, and a 10,000 square foot convention center.

Livingston in the Past By Don VanderVeen Senior Writer Parts of his extensive collection of hickory shafted clubs have appeared on the big screen in movies such as “The Legend of Bagger Vance” and “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” but Ralph Livingston claims that the vintage mashies are more than just for show. Livingston, an advertising photographer from Grand Rapids, says he is hooked – and sometimes sliced – on playing the game with equipment used during golf’s golden era of the 1920s. “It’s a lot more of a challenge in that they demand that you pay attention and concentrate more on your shots,” he says. “If you hit them flush, they’re virtually identical to modern clubs, except for the driver. “The driver is undoing the game of golf nowadays,” he added. “Graphite shafts and titanium heads have really changed the balance of the game. “The modern driver is designed for carry, and not for hit and run. The hickory drivers can run 40 to 50 yards and they have something of an accuracy advantage over the modern club.” Nonetheless, Livingston says he gladly gives up length off the tee to use a shaft

14

MICHIGAN GOLF 2006

made from hickory. Livingston said his 1920s vintage hickory club collection is closing in on 1,000, give or take a niblick. Tom Stewart clubs are the centerpieces of his collection. “What you have in Stewart hickory shafts represents what the club players of the day preferred,” Livingston claims. Livingston’s clubs hit the big screen after production companies for the movies “The Legend of Bagger Vance” and “The Greatest Game Ever Played” contacted him through his website, hickorygolf.com. The clubs were used by several characters in “The Legend of Bagger Vance,” including Juna, played by Matt Damon. “The stuff I put together for the movie are some of the best play sets I’ve used.” “For ‘The Greatest Game Ever Played,’ they contacted me through the author and sent me a script so I could help match up the clubs,” Livingston said. “They didn’t show the clubs as much as in the other movie, but there are a few shots with the grips and club head going through the ball in the scene where it is driving through the telephone book.” Livingston said that he found his first hickory club – a putter – around 1990, and was hooked right away. “I putted with it and it worked great,”

said Livingston, who claims to hold a 9handicap. “I couldn’t believe it.” “I started chasing down some other clubs and started playing with them, because I enjoyed hitting the putter.” “I got some (hickory shaft) irons and I was amazed how they performed. Those are the only clubs I have played with in the past eight or nine years. I went to a couple of different shows, met a couple collectors and played in my first event. It really took off from there.” He has since established a Hickory Club Ryder Cup format between collectors from the United States and Great Britain. Hickory competitions continue to grow in popularity throughout Michigan and the Midwest as well. One such event – the Hickory Stick Invitational – takes place annually at Forest Lake Country Club in Bloomfield Hills. Last fall, a bagpiper led 70 hickory enthusiasts clad in knickers and tams onto the course for the eighth annual event. Livingston is a past champion of the Scottish Hickory Championship in Gullane, east of Edinburgh. He placed eighth in the National Hickory Championship in West Virginia in 2004. RALPH LIVINGSTON

Upper Hand Marquette – Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is fast becoming the state’s premier golf destination. Timberstone Golf Club in Iron Mountain has long been the champion of golf in Michigan’s wilderness frontier. But the new Greywalls golf course makes the trek to the U.P. even more inviting. Golf Magazine is out with its “Top 10 You Can Play” rankings for 2005 and suggests Greywalls stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Bandon Dunes, Oregon; The Jewel, Minn.; Silver Rock Resort, Cal.; and Wynn Las Vegas Resort. Meantime, Golf Digest rates Greywalls the No. 3 “Best New Upscale Public Course” for 2005. “Being rated nationally with some of the best golf courses in the country is a strong testimony to the quality design that Mike DeVries has created,” said Bruce Roberts, president of the Marquette Golf Club, which built Greywalls as an upscale companion to the Heritage course. “The addition of

18

MICHIGAN GOLF 2006

Greywalls has the potential to make Upper Michigan as popular for summer golfers as it is for skiing/snowmobiling enthusiasts in the winter. “Even more, those fortunate enough to stand on Greywalls’ first tee during autumn’s vibrant color season – surrounded by huge granite facades, clear cloudless skies and the dark blue hue of Lake Superior – will enjoy a view that rivals those on most of our nation’s best color tours,” added Roberts. Greywalls spans over 230 acres, combining views of Lake Superior with natural rock outcroppings. The first tee sits 380-feet above the lake as the first six holes play downhill from there. Both Timberstone and Greywalls cracked the Top Five of Michigan Golf’s Top 50 Public Golf Courses ranking. See page 20.

Michigan’s Top Public Golf Courses BY RANDY PRICHARD

M

ichigan is blessed with so many truly great golf courses that we endeavored to rate them in the interest of selecting Michigan’s Top 50 public golf courses every reader can play. The process was admittedly subjective, but insightful, and the results refreshingly surprising. Aesthetics are subjective. For instance, I have an infatuation for links-style courses; I find beauty in seeing the golf course, the terrain, and various attributes associated with open, sweeping layouts. Other players, however, prefer wooded settings, tree-lined fairways and elevation changes. Value can also be subjective. Courses people play are largely associated with what they can afford. We could have put a panel of seven judges together but I doubt that the results would have changed much. After all, there was only a .83-point difference between the No. 1 rated course and the No. 25 rated course. Clearly, anyone in the Top 50 can thump their chest and say, “I’m among Michigan’s elite, one of the best in the state amid the

20

MICHIGAN GOLF 2006

700-plus public golf facilities.” The golf boom of the late 90s was good for the Michigan golfer. Every course rated among the Top 10 opened in the past nine years, Timberstone being the oldest. Golf course architect Arthur Hills is well represented, with five courses among the Top 25, four of which participate in the Art Hills Golf Trail. Michigan Golf presents 50 of the very best courses you can play in the “Public Golf Course Capital of the World.” Judges (along with input from readers of Michigan Golf Magazine): Randy Prichard, associate publisher and director, Michigan Golf Magazine; Don Vanderveen, Michigan Golf senior writer and freelance contributor to the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press; Jason Deegan, Web editor of www.michigangolf.com and freelance contributor to Golf Magazine, Travel Golf Media (www.travelgolf.com), and Golf Vacations Magazine. Rating criteria (on a scale of 1-5, 1 being the lowest): Playability, Condition, Service, Aesthetics, Value. Greens fees based on 2005 rates with cart. KEVIN FRISCH

ARCADIA BLUFFS, ARCADIA Rating: 4.66, Peak Season Greens Fee: $180 – Since its opening in 2000, Arcadia has had no rival. The setting on 245 acres overlooking Lake Michigan and 3,100 feet of Great Lakes shoreline puts it over the top, but make no mistake, it’s a world-class golf course with 50 sod-wall bunkers. Rerouting of the two nines and rebuilding of several greens has only improved its stature. Golf Digest suggests that Arcadia is one of the Top 10 Public Courses you can play in the U.S. Deegan: “There are many great courses and each have great layouts or great holes, but no other Michigan course can compare to Arcadia. The greens are often criticized but golfers need to swallow their ego.” Vanderveen: “Arcadia is as close to British-style golf as most Michiganders are ever going to get. It’s Michigan’s must-play destination. If you have your short game in order you can score well. But this course requires a complete game – putting, driving accuracy, irons, chipping, bunkers.”

2

FOREST DUNES, ROSCOMMON Rating: 4.5, Peak Season Greens Fee: $125 – The clubhouse alone makes Forest Dunes a stunner, but it doesn’t mask the beauty of this Michigan gem, a 1,200-acre golf oasis in the middle of the Huron National Forest. I said it in a 2003 review, “not a single hole is contrived.” The opening par 4 sets the stage for a memorable round and each hole thereafter adds to the enjoyment. Brick stamped concrete cart paths carry you around the entire course. In a word: Perfect. Deegan: “Forest Dunes is very pure. Every aspect is immaculate.” Vanderveen: “For pure golf, this course rivals Aracadia Bluffs, and if it were not for its location it might well be No. 1. Golf in Michigan doesn’t get much better.”

22

MICHIGAN GOLF 2006

3 TIMBERSTONE, IRON MOUNTAIN

Rating 4.38, Peak Season Greens Fee: $68 – Timberstone is the only public Michigan golf course to which Golf Digest awarded five stars. It was also The Michigan Golf Course Owners Association “Course of the Year” for 2004. This is by far golf course architect Jerry Matthews’ best work in Michigan. The $68 greens fee makes the eight-hour drive from Detroit worth it. Deegan: “I wish it were closer to me.” Vanderveen: “If Timberstone was in Wisconsin it would be that states No. 2 course.” TOP: COURTESY ARCADIA BLUFFS; BOTTOM: COURTESY TIMBERSTONE

4 EAGLE EYE, BATH

Page 24

Rating 4.32, Peak Season Greens Fee: $85 – Chris Lutzke had his eye on this project from the time he was tutoring under Jerry Matthews. When he joined Pete Dye, the dominoes fell into place, as did each magnificent hole. Critics will chide Eagle Eye for being manufactured. That said, the stark contrast to most courses you’ll play is nothing short of dramatic. The folks at Hawk Hollow, home to Eagle Eye, know golf. They rank among the best operators in the state, evidenced by the immaculate condition of every tee station, fairway, bunker and green.

Deegan: “This course has surprised everyone. It’s just awesome. The replication of the Pete Dye par 3 island hole at The TPC at Sawgrass course is reason enough for Eagle Eye to be a course you have to play. Vanderveen: “I’m not big on imitations, but the par 3 island hole is something you have to try. The two closing par 5s have no match in Michigan. The whole course is unique for Michigan golf. The (course) condition when I played was second to none.

5 GREYWALLS, MARQUETTE

GREYWALLS

Rating 4.29, Peak Season Greens Fee: $125. Golf course architect Mike DeVries has been quietly making a name for himself in Michigan: The Kingsley Club, Pilgrim’s Run, Diamond Springs. Greywalls puts him on the national radar. Golf Magazine suggests Greywalls is among the “Top 10 New Public Courses You Can Play.” DeVries would be the first to tell you that his new masterpiece had less to do with him than it did Mother Nature. Having said that, his design had to be equal to the setting. The natural terrain and huge rock outcroppings provide a stage unmatched in the state. Add mountain vistas to Lake Superior and the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and you have a golf destination worth the trip. Deegan: “Greywalls is a magical place, offering unique characteristics. Greywalls proves that it doesn’t matter where a golf course is located, golfers will work to get there if it’s worth the trouble. Greywalls is all that.” Vanderveen: “Consider for a moment that two of Michigan’s Top Five golf courses are in the U.P. Greywalls just provided me another reason to visit Timberstone. Kudos to Mike DeVries.”

6

BLACK LAKE, ONAWAY Rating 4.27, Peak Season Greens Fee: $85 less 20 percent for UAW members – Rees Jones, the so-called “Open Doctor” and son of Robert Trent Jones, nearly slipped two golf courses into Michigan’s Top 50. Both opened virtually back-to-back. And while downstate sister Thousand Oaks is every bit a classic design, Black Lake gets a few points on location and land formations. Suffice to say that Onaway, Mich. doesn’t come to mind as one of the first places you plan to visit, unless of course you aspire to play one of the state’s truly fine golf courses. Black Lake opened in 2002 to rave reviews, including a #2 ranking as Golf Digest’s “Best New Upscale Public Course.” Deegan: “Black Lake is a victim of competition. The course is equally as enjoyable as any in the Top Five. There are no bad holes on the course. Each are very playable and very pleasing.” Vanderveen: “Name one course Rees Jones has done you wouldn’t want to play. His golf courses are very traditional while influenced by today’s standards.” BLACK LAKE

TULLYMORE-ST. IVES RESORT, STANWOOD Rating 4.27, Peak Season Greens Fee: $99 – Tullymore is one of those courses that looks as if every hole was painted to perfection. Long renown for providing a quality golf experience, St. Ives Resort trumped even their standards of high-end golf with Tullymore. Jim Engh was the person for the job. A Colorado native, Engh brought an entirely different perspective to Michigan golf. Shortly after Tullymore opened, which it did in 2001 as the #1 New Upscale Public Course in America (Golf Digest), Engh was named the golf course Architect of the Year in 2003 by the same publication. Deegan: “Again, this course suffers from very stiff competition. Tullymore is an exhilarating Engh design.” Vanderveen: “One of the premier golf course architects in the U.S. took a very challenging piece of land, mostly marsh, and created a spectacular golf course.”

8

TRIBUTE-OTSEGO CLUB, GAYLORD Rating 4.25, Peak Season Greens Fee: $79 – This Rick Robbins/Gary Koch collaboration is the crown jewel of the Gaylord Golf Mecca which features 432 holes of incomparable Northern Michigan golf. The Tribute weaves 18 meticulously placed holes over 1,100 acres of the Otsego Club ski resort. The elevation changes that sweep over the Sturgeon River Valley afford the golfer some of the most dramatic vistas in Michigan. Deegan: “Surprisingly the word has been slow to get out on the Tribute. I’m

TULLYMORE a big fan of what the Tribute offers; the course condition, elevation changes and sweeping fairways. This course quietly sits in the Top 10,” Vanderveen: “The Tribute gets over-

shadowed but it’s one of Michigan’s ‘Oh Wow’ courses. It’s as nice a course as you’ll find in this state. Koch definitely had an eye for what fit that piece of land.”

BAY HARBOR-BOYNE RESORTS

9 BAY HARBOR-BOYNE RESORTS,

PILGRIM’S RUN

BAY HARBOR Rating 4.23, Peak Season Greens Fee: $179/$149 house-guest – The bayside nine holes on the southern shore of Little Traverse Bay are what make this a truly spectacular golf course, not only the views, but the Art Hills design and use of the land. Complement these nine holes with the Quarry nine and you have a memorable round of golf. Deegan: “It’s too bad more people don’t have access to Bay Harbor. Now more than ever golfers look for value. I love the Quarry holes. It’s easy to overlook any flaws of this course because the setting is so beautiful.” Vanderveen: “Take away the Links nine and you have just another very good Michigan golf course, but the Links holes make Bay Harbor more than just another very good Michigan course. It definitely has to be in the Top 10.”

10

PILGRIM’S RUN, PIERSON Rating 4.12, Peak Season Greens Fee: $65 – Kudos to the most unpretentious golf course in the Top 10. No snobbery here and they don’t serve alcohol. The story on Pilgrim’s Run is that six individuals took three holes each, incorporated the input of then superintendent Kris Shumaker and architect Mike DeVries, and created an opus to golf course design. Deegan: “Pilgrim’s Run raised some eyebrows when word got out on how it was designed. Not pretentious. Great value. Women-friendly and service oriented. Sounds like a recipe for success.” Vanderveen: “I’ve never heard one negative comment about Pilgrim’s Run. Anyone who has ever played it plans to play it again.”

SHEPHERD’S HOLLOW

11 SHEPHERD’S HOLLOW,

CLARKSTON Rating 4.10, Peak Season Greens Fee: $85. Prichard: “For design and layout, I might put this Art Hills course ahead of Bay Harbor.” Deegan: “Famous for their food. The Detroit area’s ultimate ‘Northern golf experience’ without the drive.” Vanderveen: “In a market where there’s a lot of golf courses but few outstanding tracks, Shepherd’s Hollow leads the flock.”

12 tie

THOUSAND OAKS, GRAND RAPIDS Rating 4.09, Peak Season Greens Fee: $90. HAWK’S EYE, BELLAIRE. Rating 4.09, Peak Season Greens Fee: $89. Prichard: “People who play Hawk’s Eye will absolutely love the enjoyment factor which begins at the opening hole. Thousand Oaks is a classic design in the tradition of older layouts.” Deegan: “Hawk’s Eye’s layout is very well balanced. The par 5s are terrific. Thousand Oaks doesn’t have a hole I didn’t like”

16

CEDAR RIVERSHANTY CREEK RESORT, BELLAIRE Rating 3.97, Peak Season Greens Fee: $120/$110 houseguest. Prichard: “This is a very good golf course with some memorable holes. It’s interesting to note that Tom Weiskopf was working on this course while designing Forest Dunes.” Deegan: “The type of golf course that can entertain all types and levels of golfers.” Vanderveen: “If it’s good enough to host the Michigan PGA Championship, that should say something.”

32

MICHIGAN GOLF 2006

Vanderveen: “Hawk’s Eye is a definite contrast to its sister course, The Chief. Much more player friendly. As for Thousand Oaks, nothing artificial here. The Rees Jones design is one for the ages.”

14

ELK RIDGE, ATLANTA Rating 4.07, Peak Season Greens Fee: $75. Prichard: “Here’s a classic case of people going out of their way to play a specific golf course. Must be the Honey Baked Ham.” Deegan: “As rugged a setting as you’ll get. Devilishly difficult for a short course.” Vanderveen: “Always immaculate. Exceptional value and service.”

15

SIGNATURE-TREETOPS RESORT, GAYLORD Rating 3.98, Peak Season Greens Fee: $115/$87 house-guest. Prichard: “At some point you realize that Rick Smith understands golf. His Signature course stands alongside his other Michigan projects: Wuskowhan and Arcadia Bluffs.” Deegan: “If Rick Smith turned 100% of his attention to architecture, he might become one of the best in the country.” Vanderveen: “Smith has a mind for golf. He’s Phil Mickelson’s pro. He’s the mastermind of the Par 3 Shootout and The Big Break. And he designed the Signature course. Now he’s part owner of the place.” BRIAN WALTERS

Great Golf, great shopping and now Avalanche Bay; Boyne’s newest addition to the empire that defines Northern Michigan. Located at Boyne Mountain Resort, Avalanche Bay along with the new Mountain Grand Lodge invites guests and families to do more than just play golf. And Avalanche Bay is no kiddie pool, 88,000 square feet of indoor, year round entertainment for everyone. Mountain Grand Lodge, which is roaring along features in-room fireplaces, kitchenettes and whirlpools. Known for Bay Harbor Golf Club and The Arthur Hills at Boyne Highlands, Boyne has re-affirmed its place as the place to travel in Michigan for that great getaway. Hills’ shares a special relationship with Boyne Resorts and Michigan golfers. His work is etched across the state. Much attention has been lavished on him since his Bay Harbor design debuted in 1998. Many golf pundits regard Bay Harbor Golf Club, with 27-holes of inland, quarry and lakeside links, to be his finest work to date. Boyne Highlands pre-dated Bay Harbor, and it was this course, as much as anything, that landed him the project at Bay Harbor as well as being commissioned to tweak Crooked Creek Golf Club’s layout, also managed by Boyne USA Resorts.

The signature hole at the Hills’ Highland course is the 570-yard par 5, 13th hole. The tee station is highest point on the golf course, offering a spectacular view of the expansive 300 acres of rolling hills, marshland and plush terrain. The 150-drop from tee to fairway offers the sensation that your tee ball will never reach land. The finishing hole is also one that will leave a very memorable impression on your golfing experience. Another stout par 5 measuring 577-yards is No. 18, a slight left dogleg guarded by a large and very intimidating pond for the final half of the home hole. The true definition of a risk/reward hole, the task at hand requires 2 large shots that demand you keep your ball airborne for anywhere from 225-260 yards on the second shot. If you choose to play it in its traditional 3-shot fashion, you will have to negotiate numerous fairway bunkers along the way. Either way, the Hills will leave a lasting memory forever begging a return trip to this enjoyable and beautiful test of golf. Super Five Golf Weeks and Unlimited Golf Packages starting at just $113. Choose from the Heather, Hills, Ross, Moor, Alpine, Monument and Crooked Tree. This package also includes lodging and breakfast buffet and all the golf you can play.

Pilgrim’s Run Golf Club

H

Having collected a Top 100 You Can Play award from Golf Magazine, Pilgrim’s Run will add another feather in its cap in 2007, as they will host a United States Open Qualifier. The Pilgrim’s Run opus began innocently enough. Then-superintendent Kris Shumaker created the routing of the golf course. Six employees of the founder’s company designed three holes each within the guidelines provided. Architect Mike DeVries designed the green complexes and did some consulting. The result: a symphony of golf holes working in harmony with nature on 400 acres of mixed hardwoods, pines and wetlands in West Michigan. Director of Golf Jeff O’Malley points to “shot value” and “playability” as key contributors to the popularity of Pilgrim’s Run’s. He’s not wrong. Witness the par 5 opening hole. No monster by any stretch, No. 1 measures 519 yards from the blue tees. Opening with a par 5 allows you to relax a bit and focus on making three decent shots so that you can get on the putting service in regulation and putt for par or birdie. The No. 2 par 4 hole is much the same, with a slight right-to-left bend and a fairway that slopes toward the green that’s below the line of sight. It’s here, more so

than on the first hole, that you get a feel for the most challenging aspect of Pilgrim’s Run – the greens, which are undulating with tricky pin placements that require an accurate approach. The front nine is home to Pilgrim’s most photographed hole, the par 5 sixth. From the tips it measures only 498 yards. And if it weren’t for a 35-yard-long, 20-yard-wide bunker in the middle of the landing area, the hole would be a cinch. Carry the bunker and you may have as little as a mid-iron shot into a tightly guarded, elevated green. This is a definite eagle hole for low handicappers. The two par 5s on the back nine are equally as enjoyable as those on the front side; they play a tad longer and the tee shots are greeted by huge landing areas. The green at hole 11 plays downhill while the putting surface at hole 13 is elevated. Pilgrim’s Run is a collection of great golf holes, but none more dramatic or tantalizing than No. 18. There’s plenty of room to the left of the lake to hit a safe, sensible shot, but for those who have been playing a sound game or just can’t help themselves, the center of the green awaits 280 yards from the blue tee. It’s all downhill and all over water: classic risk/reward golf.

A

Arcadia Bluffs offers one the most dazzling collection of golf holes in the United States. Vistas of lake Michigan can be viewed from anywhere on the property as the course and clubhouse are perched on the bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. The anticipation builds the moment you enter the property and travel the half-mile drive to the clubhouse. With Lake Michigan always on the horizon, players get a sneak preview of the par 5 first hole and the par 4 eighth. Arcadia has a distinctive Irish allure with a natural rolling terrain that seems to flow from hole to hole. The sculpted sod walled and native blow-out bunkers frame the fairways and greens, with the brown fescue gently waving in the prevailing northwest lake breeze. The course presents two distinct nines that both conclude at the clubhouse. The front nine is an invigorating mix of three par 3’s, three par 4’s and three par 5’s. The wide and inviting fairways offer players a generous opportunity to position themselves for the challenges that lay ahead once they reach the greens. Players of all abilities agree that Arcadia is a fair and challenging test. Have your camera ready on #3 and #5 tees as they are a great group photo opportunity.

The back nine is one of the most picturesque and demanding stretch of holes that golf has to offer. The par 4 tenth begins the decent to the bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. A carefully placed drive is the key to success on this hole. The next three holes punctuate the spectacle that defines Arcadia Bluffs. Hole #11 is a downhill three shot par 5 with a green as close to heaven as it is the water’s edge. The par 4 twelfth heads the players north as it sweeps along the bluff line with a view for miles up the northwest coastline. Number 13 is the famed 180 yard ravine par 3. The round ends on the uphill par 4 eighteenth leading the players to the beautiful Nantucket style clubhouse. After your round, make time to enjoy a beverage and dinner while taking in one of the most spectacular views. Talk about your round and begin planning your next trip to Arcadia Bluffs. Arcadia Bluffs is golf personified: a world-class links golf course with full practice area, short game facility, and GPS equipped golf cars. Arcadia is one of the “I have to play it” courses – clear your schedule, make your travel plans and enjoy a facility that is unrivaled in the United States.

St. Ives Resort

S

St. Ives golf course debuted to rave reviews in 1997 and rocketed to a number 5 ranking as America’s “Best New Affordable Public Course” by Golf Digest. Tullymore followed in 2002 as the No.1 “Best New Upscale Public Golf Course” by Golf Digest. The similarities end there. These courses are very, very different. St. Ives makes great use of dramatic elevation changes, placing a premium on position off the tee on almost every hole. Tullymore meanwhile gives more room off the tee, challenging the golfer with a mixture of more undulating greens than St. Ives. Several fairways at Tullymore are sculpted to “kick” the ball back towards the fairway, a nice touch for the middle to high handicapper. Tullymore allows the player a new approach to each hole each time out. And the same can be said for St. Ives, but perhaps it’s more pronounced, noting the elevation changes. This course can take on a noticeably different appearance from one day to the next. “I’d put Tullymore right up there with the other courses I have done”, says Jim Engh, the 2003 Golf Course Architect of the Year. What he and Jerry Matthews accomplished with Tullymore and St. Ives, respectively, are courses that are playable at any level,

challenging to the scratch player, but not punishing to the average player. What we liked the best at Tullymore is the great finishing 18th. A 5-par that can be reached in two with an “educated” draw for you right handers around the large trees guarding the green. A super hole to finish the day. With the edition of the new course, plans were put into motion for a place for guests to stay, and The Inn at St. Ives was born. Located at the St. Ives course, this 44 room Inn offers it all. Corporate meeting space, an indoor pool, fitness room, massage therapy, and all the amenities of the world class resorts. What you will notice most though, is the service. Director of Golf Kevin O’Brien and his staff have mastered this most important aspect of being successful, from on-course marshals and their forecaddie duties to the friendly service from the outside staff to the pleasant shop staff, St. Ives realizes the player come first. With awards coming from everywhere, St. Ives Resort will keep reaching higher and higher, maybe we will even see more golf in the future in the little town of Stanwood. Golf Digest has said, “They are the elite, the ultimate experience, and the very best golf that our part of the world has to offer”. Make your tee time.

The Heathlands

LOCATION: Just north of Manistee, U.S. 31 North to M22 to Onekama on right side of road just before town. ADDRESS: 6444 Farr Road, Onekama 49675 YARDAGE: 4,596/6,790; 3 sets of tees ARCHITECT: Jeff Gorney YEAR OPENED: 1997 PHONE: (231) 889-5644 WEB SITE: www.heathlands.com

T

The Heathlands is a rare mix of gently rolling Michigan landforms, a bygone orchard, open spaces and native hardwoods and wetlands. It’s a delight to play, repeatedly mind you, and a golf course you dare not pass up if your intent is to play West Michigan’s best. As the name hints, The Heathlands is an inland links-style course spread out over 320 acres, two-thirds of which is a former apple orchard and the remainder is native hardwoods and wetlands. This scenery made it obvious to the owners to develop course side homes and condominiums. Located adjacent to the course, Heathlands Condominiums start at $239,000 and allow the golf lifestyle to be full time. Architect Jeff Gorney and owners John Read Sr. and Jr. were careful with the routing so as to maintain the land’s natural flow and offering. Native orchard fescue provides the heather look. The wide-open expanse of the old orchard allows you to take in virtually the entire course, providing glimpses of Portage Lake in nearby Onekama. Winds can sweep off Lake Michigan, authenticating a seaside experience. Tee stations and greens are sowed with bentgrass. The fairways are seeded in bluegrass and mowed to about three-quarters of an inch so the ball sits up nice-

ly, waiting to be struck again. The most interesting hole at Heathlands is the par 3 15th. From the back tees (169 yards) you can’t see the narrow, two-tiered green. The elevation drop is over 100 feet, with a marsh guarding the leading edge. Heathlands’ muscle hole is the closing 18th, measuring 605 yards that plays more like 650. It’s a classic hole that will take all of your skill to make par. The remaining 16 holes are unadulterated fun – holes like you wish were found or more courses because they’re playable, offer reward, yet require you to still make the shot. The two par 5s on the front nine offer exceptional shot value and birdie opportunities, playing 559 yards and 541 yards, respectively. No. 3 angles a bit to the right, while No. 6 takes the opposite tack. Both fairways are expansive, bordered by the ever-present heather. Measuring just 295 yards, No. 14 serves as the token risk-reward hole. You can try to bomb one to the green, but caution is advised as trouble lurks near flat stick land and through the fairway. Take it easy and this hole provides an excellent chance at birdie. The Heathlands proudly stands beside some of Michigan’s more celebrated golf courses.

TimberStone Golf Club

F

Fresh off their 2004 Michigan Golf Course Owner’s Association Course of The Year Award, Susie Fox and her staff at TimberStone continue to wow all that make the journey to play one of the top courses in the Midwest. That honor comes with Golf Digest stating the Iron Mountain facility was the only Michigan course in 2004 deserving of five stars in their highly coveted rating system. Heading into 2006 with the Upper Peninsula garnering a great deal of attention with its great golf, the character of TimberStone is clearly visible the moment you arrive through the main gates. Towering pines, majestic oaks, colorful birch and some of the largest stones you may ever see frame and enhance every view. Ascending the mountainside of Pine Mountain, each hole is benched into the landscape until, before you know it, you have a stunning panoramic view of two states; fifteen miles of unobstructed beauty, 310 feet above where you started your golf journey. “Sagola”, the famed 17th hole, derives its name from the old ski jumping days. This par 3 has 7 waterfall tees and 110 feet of vertical drop to a two-tiered green shaped like the nearby lake you see in the distance. TimberStone is located adjacent to the 120-meter

World Famous Pine Mountain Ski Jump. As the story goes, when skiers would come off the end of the jump they would yell Sagola, referring to the small community they could see 15 miles to the north, fantasizing that their flight would carry them across the expanse. Yes, we know it is far away from us below the bridge folks, but if you take a look at the map, the splendid choices for great golf in the Upper Peninsula are growing extraordinarily. Jerry Matthews created a true mountain course at TimberStone. Golf Digest architecture editor Ron Whitten wrote, “TimberStone might well be the best mountain course ever done by Matthews.” If you are not up to driving to Iron Mountain, check out a short flight to great golf through various airlines including Midwest, which does fly right into Iron Mountain from Flint, Grand Rapids, and Muskegon amongst others. The staff at TimberStone will also arrange for transportation to and from the airport, only 2.5 miles away. Visit them at www.midwestairlines.com. If you go, plan a few days, after playing TimberStone, check out the new Greywalls in Marquette or Bay Mills in Brimley to make your Upper Peninsula escape complete.

No golf trip in Michigan would be complete without a visit to the Midwest’s grandest golfing resort – Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. Conde Nast Traveler ranks Grand Traverse Resort among the top 50 worldwide travel destinations. Much of the notoriety lavished on Grand Traverse Resort is owed to Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, two of golf’s greatest legends and architects of two of Michigan’s exemplary golf designs. The Bear (Nicklaus) is one of the most demanding tests of golf in the state; a Michigan Golf “Monster” with a GAM course rating of 76.8 from the back tees. The Bear is a might tamer from the middle tees (6,100 yards) than it is from the tips (7,000 yards). The Nicklaus design was nothing short of inventive for its day: Scottish terraced fairways, tiered greens, heathery roughs, moguls, mounds, deep pot bunkers and a whole lot of Northern Michigan woods, water and wetlands. Its very purpose was to bring attention to Grand Traverse Resort as home to one of the toughest tracks to be played. Wrestling for attention just as he did when he was winning Majors against the true-life Bear, Gary Player designed the less fearsome, yet toothy Wolverine —

testy enough to be ranked among the top 20 most difficult courses in Michigan. This past December, the resort also engaged in a $1.7 million renovation to the lobby. A new water wall, larger check in area and a lobby bar and lounge to further enhance guests stay. In addition, all 238 rooms at the hotel will receive new bedding and luxurious pillow-top mattresses, similar to those already installed at the resorts 186 room Tower in 2005. Since the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians purchased the resort, over $10 million has been invested in making the resort truly special. Grand Traverse Resort and Spa also is home to one of only seven Jim McLean Golf Schools, one of the most respected instructional programs in the game. The Northern Michigan landmark offers an additional 18 holes of golf on the modest and charming Spruce Run course, features a 100,000-square-foot Spa Complex with a 7,000-square-foot treatment facility, 49,000 square feet of dedicated meeting space and 660 lodging accommodations. A couple of dates to remember for 2006, June 19-22 is the Golf Your Daylights Out Promotion and July 1-8, the world renowned Cherry Festival once again gets underway.

Yarrow Golf & Conference Center

T

There is no better place in Southwest Michigan to rest, relax and enjoy an exhilarating round of golf than Yarrow Golf and Conference Center. Yarrow the resort dates back to 1992 when the retreat opened with nine guest rooms and dining for 20 people. Yarrow the golf course dates back to an October 2001 tornado that laid waste to thousands of Yarrow pine and hardwood trees. The will and determination of Yarrow owners turned the devastation to destiny, a fate that led the owners to hire Ray Hearn. The 18-hole championship golf course has catapulted Yarrow into one of the premier Midwest golf destinations, accented with and American Gothic-style lodge, charming guest rooms, corporate meeting rooms, fireside rooms, restaurant, pub and of course, the sprawling natural beauty of the secluded retreat. Yarrow manifests playability on every hole, beginning with a stunning par-5 opener. The golfer is perched high above the fairway looking out over an expansive fairway that will accept shots and funnel them to the right side of a directional bunker. Even if you tackle the course from the championship tees, the course is a respectable 7,000 yards,

while the more common teeing area sets the course up at a very manageable 6,500 yards. The boldest hole for the mid-handicapper on the front side will be the par 4 third hole, measuring 400 yards with an uphill grade. The putting surface is very demanding, and depending on pin placement and where you land your approach, and could have a downhill or uphill putt of 100-feet or more. The greatest risk-reward hole on the course is the par-4 fifth hole, a dynamo that invites you to blast a 250-yard-plus drive over a pond to reach the ideal landing area, leaving you a short iron into the green. Miss the appropriate landing area and you’ll need a mid to long iron to carry you back over the pond to the putting service that slopes right to left. The owners sparred little expense in building a course that will rank as one of the finest public facilities to open in America in the past several years. Beyond golf, Yarrow specializes in corporate meetings, team-building and training, romantic getaways, weddings, special events and bed and breakfast packages. Yarrow can also serve as the anchor point for great golf in throughout the region.

Located in “America’s Summer Golf Capital,” Treetops Resort has made its mark as one of the most distinguished resorts in the country. In fact, Golfweek magazine recently named Treetops “One of the Top Places to Play Before You Die.” Quite an honor, considering Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, Bandon Dunes, Kiawah and Whistling Straits were on the same list, and Golfweek Magazine released their picks for the Top 100 Resort Courses in America and The Rick Smith Signature ranked at #37 and The Fazio Premier ranked at #59. Securing the ESPN Par 3 Shootout in 1999, which is televised nationally each summer from the challenging Threetops short course, thrust the resort into the national golf scene. Then the Golf Channel filmed its first season of “The Big Break” in 2003 at Treetops, giving it further exposure. Additionally, Treetops has earned Golf magazine’s Silver Medal award six times for outstanding service, golf courses and amenities. Treetops boasts 81 award winning holes of golf by designers Rick Smith, Tom Fazio, and Robert Trent Jones Sr. All of the courses have been rated as high as 4.5 Stars by Golf Digest.

Many millions have been spent on renovations. Treetops has added a Starbucks internet café, a stateof-the-art game room with five high-definition televisions and a new children’s adventure center. A new activities building features a golf simulator, billiards area and new card rooms for after-golf enjoyment. The makeover of the rooms at Treetops include all new carpeting, fixtures, tiles, bedding and furniture and cable service in the Lodge rooms providing over 300 TV channels and high speed internet access. Rounding out the amenities, a new full-service spa and salon offer guests all the pampering they could desire, including massages, manicures, pedicures and hair styling. Those considering purchasing a second home will surely want to consider the Masterpiece Residence Club and the North Estates at Treetops. Lake Doster and Wallinwood Springs

T

These two Par 5, Inc.-owned golf courses offer an enjoyable golfing experience at an incomparable value. Lake Doster Golf Club is west of Plainwell off M-89. It’s a course that plays short in relationship to more recent designs (6,500 yards from the blue tees), but it continues to challenge even the most skilled golfer. Coowner Tim Hartson has planned some changes and will have the courses in great shape for the 2006 season. Especially gratifying is the opening hole, a gentle sort measuring less than 350 yards. Hole 10 is similar in length but the green is much more demanding, with a severe right-to-left slope. Doster’s trademark hole is the short par 3 third hole, The Little Monster. Rated one of the top 18 holes in Michigan by the Detroit News. A newly rebuilt tee sits high above the treacherous green below, completely isolated by trees, surrounded on three sides by water, and further protected by three deep sand traps. Plans for 2006 include a bunker project on the back nine to improve the look and playability of the course while keeping the challenge alive. Also, cart paths will be repaired, and the areas surrounding the entry to the fairways will be improved. Doster has an elegant new clubhouse/restaurant/

banquet facility courtesy of a fire that ravaged the old clubhouse five years ago. Guests will find the facility very comforting, capable of handling large outings and groups numbering 250 people or more. Wallinwood Springs in Jenison opened to rave reviews in 1990. Ray Hearn’s handiwork is evident on the front nine. Nine additional holes were added in 1993. Like Doster, Wallinwood isn’t monstrously long, just 6,700 yards from the back tees. For 2006, Wallinwood Springs will see 5-6 bunkers rebuilt with new sand. Each hole on the outward nine employs water hazards to test your accuracy. The Grand River borders the right side on holes 10-13, while wetlands and a quarry lake influence your shots to the left on every hole. The par three 13th hole requires a 205-yard carry over the water if you select the back tees. And hole 15 is a picturesque island green par 3 that measures 200 yards. Both courses can accommodate large groups for weddings, outings, banquets and virtually any occasion that calls for the ambiance of a golf course setting. Excellent food and great, friendly service await guests for each event at the club. The Hartson’s invite you to visit both courses in 2006.

Grand Hotel, one of the world’s finest hotels and, according to Travel & Leisure Family Magazine, one of the 10 best hotels in the U. S. for families, features one of Michigan’s most unique golf courses - The Jewel. Though not a long course, The Jewel offers unique and historic features - along with beautiful views which turn a round of golf into a walk back in time. On The Jewel, a horse-and-carriage ride transports golfers from the Grand (front) nine, across the street from the hotel, to the Woods (back) nine, located in the interior of the island. “The best thing about The Jewel is the island tranquility and pace of play,” head professional Jason Horricks said. “And there’s no other course which includes such a novel way of going from one nine to the other.” “The scenery is second to none in Michigan, and the course is in excellent shape.” The Grand nine originally opened in 1911, and was redesigned in 1985 by architect Jerry Matthews. The Woods nine, also designed by Matthews, opened in 1994. “The Jewel was one of my favorite projects,”

Matthews said. “The hotel nine had real small greens, which we totally rebuilt to take out some of the difficult shots for liability purposes.” “On the Woods nine, we created nine completely new holes,” Matthews added. “It offered a tremendous amount of natural beauty on very limited acreage. The challenge of working on Mackinac Island is that motorized equipment is prohibited,” added Matthews. “It was a unique and interesting assignment.” The Governor’s Mansion, Fort Mackinac and the island’s marina can all be viewed from the number seven tee on the Hotel nine. Every hole on the Woods nine offers spectacular views. It’s a challenge for scratch golfers and high handicappers alike. The Mackinac Bridge can be seen from the green at number 10, while the par-3 12th is one of the prettiest holes anywhere with layered teeing areas, a cascading waterfall and a receptive peninsula green. The clubhouse near the Woods nine features a single lane 10-pin bowling alley, one of the oldest still operating in the United States. Whittaker Woods Golf Club

Y

You have probably driven right on by this Michigan Monster never knowing you were seconds away from one of the finer places to play in Michigan. Just off I-94 at Exit 1 in New Buffalo, Mich. lies Whittaker Woods Golf Club. Opened in 1996 and designed by Ken Killian, Whittaker Woods is part of the high-end public golf boom witnessed during the 1990s in Lower Michigan. A simple straightaway par 4 opens your round followed by a short par 5 that doesn’t leave you feeling beat up after just two holes of play. The out nine builds as it goes, delivering you to the more difficult fifth, sixth and seventh holes, where length off the tee and accuracy are equally important. The holes measure 532 yards, 450 yards and 464 yards, respectively. The sneaky No. 8 hole is a par 3 sits beyond a pond with a bunker guarding the front. Four sets of tees offer a number of approaches and club selections to this hole. The back nine starts with a very easy par 5, reachable in two with very little trouble other than some bunkers around the green. No. 11 plays to 455 yards and is probably the toughest hole on the course if the wind is in your face. Par here is prized. Great finishing holes at Whittaker Woods start at the

majestic 15th hole. This par 3 measures 233 yards and features a large sunken pond guarding the entire left side. Hole No. 16 is a long par 5, which offers a nice respite after the last two holes. Feel free to swing away. Number 18, a downhill left dogleg with a precarious green guarded by water on both sides, delivers you to the unique clubhouse, with the charm of a log home in the deep woods. O’Brien’s Restaurant will complete your day quite nicely. Offering a simple after golf lunch to relaxing, romantic dinners, to the lavish Sunday Brunch, Whittaker Woods has managed to create two separate lively entities under the same roof. Special events are always welcome with knowledgeable staff to create your special day. Living on the links is now a reality at Whittaker Woods, golf view home sites are now available and construction is underway. Golf packages with local hotels are also available and new Director of Golf Dennis Scaggs will kick off his junior golf program along with a complete instruction program to improve your game. The next time your travels take you to Michigan’s southern lakeshore of Lake Michigan, take the time to tee it up at one of Michigan’s premier golf courses.

Few golf experiences in Michigan will rival what awaits you at Eagle Eye in Bath. For openers, Eagle Eye is stunning to look at. Designer Chris Lutzke toiled in relative obscurity with the Jerry Matthews Natural Course Design firm in Lansing. When he got his big break, boy did he ever come through. It’s amazing what one man’s vision, teamed with one of the world’s renown architects (Pete Dye) can do to an old potato farm and Michigan bog. The greens are massive and undulated. The winds can howl across the landscape to the point that the par3 No. 12 hole could be attacked with nothing less than a driver. And there’s water, lots of water. Each hole is thoroughly invigorating. Play begins on one of three par 4s that measure more than 450-yards from the gold or championship tees. Unless you’re a scratch golfer, play the middle or blue tees. Eagle Eye at 6,400-yards lets you manage your game at a level that will maximize your enjoyment. It’s difficult to pick a favorite hole at Eagle Eye. For some it’s the No. 17 par 3, 169-yard Pete Dye “Eye-dentical” replica of the island green of the TPC at Sawgrass, the hole where 100,000 golf balls are extracted from the water each year.

For others the favorite hole(s) are the dueling par 5s on holes nine and eighteen. Each measures the same length from the blue tees, 525-yards, and each is masterfully designed, and placed perfectly facing East, as those Southwest winds we are used to give all of us a chance to knock in on in two. Yet others will argue that the best, if not the most challenging hole, is the par 4 sixteenth, that is best played with a draw off the tee and a fade into the narrow green that is guarded by a sentinel tree and railroad tie walled bunker. Features of Eagle Eye are too numerous to cite a single hallmark: rolling, fescue capped mounds, pot bunkers, sweeping fairways and the Lutzke trademarked frog-hair bunkers. Every nuance begs comparison to Eagle Eye’s royal and ancient ancestry. Eagle Eye is the centerpiece of a thriving golf megaplex – Hawk Hollow, home to 27-championship holes as compelling as any in Michigan; The Falcon – a ninehole executive course that features four par 4s and five par 3s; and a 18-hole bentgrass putting course. First class service with impeccable course conditions and a clubhouse that can host events of the largest size, we’ll just say General Manager Alex Coss and his staff know what they are doing. Schedule Eagle Eye for 2006.

Golf Digest has come out with their 2006 list of the countries best golf courses in several categories. Angels Crossing checks in at #6 on the “Best New Affordable Public Course” in the country. Borrowing from the theme, if you build it they will come, Angels Crossing golfers came in droves in 2005. What they discovered is a course worthy of its praise. Half of the golf course can be viewed from the first tee, as it sweeps out before you in true Scottish style. Undulated fairways, deep bunkers and native grasses blend together to offer a very pleasing sensation. Unique to Angels Crossing are the fairway “buffalo bunkers” that greet you on the left side of first hole and come into play as you close the front nine. They’re big and are identical to two charging buffalo. The hole encourages you to stay right but there’s a bunker there as well. Hole No. 1 measures 403 yards from the back tees and there’s little allowance for hitting anything but the fairway with your drive. The green is 120-feet deep and slopes from front to back. Hole No. 4 is the first par 5; a true three-shot par five. For one, it measures 616 yards from the championship tees, and two, a series of five bunkers beginning about 125 yards from the green will dampen your inter-

est in going for the green in two. The five aforementioned hazards give you options once you’ve seen where the flag is placed. Number six, a 196-yard par 3, features a Biarritz, a name coined after the famed design of Willy Dunn at Biarritz Le Phare golf club in South France. A 4-5 foot swale courses the middle of the 200-foot long green and depending on pin placement, can add up to two clubs to your tee shot selection. Another sure-to-be-infamous hole at Angels Crossing is the devilish par-3 twelfth hole, the Redan, made famous at North Berwick Golf Club in Scotland 170 years ago and brought here to test the most capable of golfers. The hole measures 254 yards from the tips; fortified by two architectural features, the most obvious being a gaping left side bunker. The green is four feet higher in the front than the back. 2006 will also see the fully operational 2400 sq. feet pavilion for all events as well as expanded food and beverage service on the course and at the turn. The new putting green is now finished and rates for golf are still fantastic, under $45 during the week, Monday thru Thursday for golf and a cart. Weekend rates are at $49 a course that is always in excellent condition.

Thousand Oaks Golf Club

N

Now a major destination for great golf, West Michigan has seen several new courses in the last 10 years. Thousand Oaks sits at or near the top of any list of truly fine facilities to play. If you’ve not had the chance or taken the opportunity to play Thousand Oaks Golf Club in Grand Rapids you’re depriving yourself of enjoying one of Michigan’s golf treasures. Play it once and you’ll appreciate architect Rees Jones’ understatement that the course “will make you feel good.” Formally a heavily wooded 450 acres, Thousand Oaks has become a home for those wanting a slice of the better life. Located in Plainfield Township, just North of Grand Rapids Downtown, home sites begin at $100,000 and are generous in size at almost an acre. The new condominium project, The Village at Thousand Oaks, is complete and ready to let you enjoy golf and living at its finest. Thousand Oaks’ fairways are generous, the rough is not overly penalizing, and there is always an entryway at the front of the greens. There are bunkers aplenty but they are positioned to actually help the player; set up to catch errant shots before they travel waywardly into the woods, which helps pace of play tremendously.

Thousand Oaks resembles courses we are used to seeing in Northern Michigan: abundant trees and dramatic elevation changes. You’ll agree with general manager Gary Smithson that what makes the Jones’ design so enjoyable is the flexibility and playability in incorporates into the layout. With large greens and several teeing options, holes can dramatically change via numerous pin positions, thus changing the angle in which each hole can be approached. Nowhere is this better evidenced than hole No. 1, a downhill right dogleg. From the middle tees you can take dead aim to the distant hidden green. But the way-back hitters will try to fade the ball into the fairway. Even if you miss, the course is shaped to guide the ball into the field of play. This type of shot reward exists on virtually every hole at Thousand Oaks. Here are some of the plaudits since it’s 1999 debut: Ranked #4 Best New Affordable Public Course by Golf Digest in 2001 and one of the Top 25 Courses in Michigan by Golf Digest in 2003. Grand Rapids Magazine readers rated Thousand Oaks The Best Public Course in a 2003, 2004 and 2005 readers poll and the restaurant receives rave reviews from all local media.

The moment you arrive at Bucks Run in Mt. Pleasant you know you’re in for a memorable experience. To quote architect Jerry Matthews, it truly is a “spectacular golf course”, and 2005 proved to be their best season ever. The centerpiece of the layout is the 34-acre Fisher Lake, which is surrounded by two holes on the front nine and three on the back nine, and fronted by a massive lodge-style clubhouse that affords a total of 18,000 square feet of space for banquets, weddings, meetings, conferences and outings. While the golf at Bucks Run, which earned 4.5 Stars from Golf Digest, is on par with courses that charge twice as much for a round, I was especially struck by how well maintained superintendent Jeff Sweet and his grounds crew keep this 300-plus-acre facility. The condition of the course is nothing short of impeccable: The place looks as though a master gardener tends to it each day, and Bucks Run was rewarded with a Top 50 ranking for pace of play, course conditions and the ever important customer service grade. The third hole is the longest of the par 5s measuring 588-yards, requiring a 200-yard carry over the wet-

lands from the back tee to the front edge of the fairway. The following par 3 may be the toughest of the water-guarded three-shot holes and a par at this 193yard, two-tiered green will be prized. The back nine at Bucks Run plays 200 yards shorter, featuring three of the most enjoyable holes on the course – 16, 17 and 18. Eighteen may well be the signature hole of Bucks Run. There would be no shame in making this hole a par 5 and dubbing hole sixteen a par 4. Eighteen is nearly as long as sixteen but requires every bit of 220 yards from the tee to carry Fisher Lake leaving you anywhere from a fairway wood to a long iron to reach the water-guarded green. Is life on the links more your fancy? Buck’s Run has its North and West Developments ready for you to enjoy life on the course. 15 lots on the North side, with some overlooking the course and Chippewa River, 20 _ acre lots on the main road, with a dozen of those overlooking #18 and Fisher Lake. _ Acre lots start at $60,000. A new development at the course in the future is a South phase, which is 2-3 years away. All in all, great golf and a chance at life on the links waits in the center of the state.

Mistwood

M

Mistwood Golf Course has been a perennial favorite of the Northern Michigan golf scene since it opened twelve years ago. Architect Jerry Matthews said it best when commenting on the terrain Mistwood occupies, “This land was ideally suited for a golf course.” Mistwood owners couldn’t agree more. And they couldn’t be more pleased with what the Natural Course Design architect team built: a 27-hole golf monolith just west of Traverse City. And now you can live here. Mistwood Greens, a new development adjacent to Mistwood features 3 exciting options: golf villas, cottages and 18 home sites. The fully-furnished Villas have two-bedrooms, two-baths and a fireplace with views of Mistwood as well as the newest course, the par 3 The Little Nine. Owners have the option of entering the Stay and Play rental program. The Cottages, two-bedroom, two-bath homes with basements are perfect for those who prefer a relaxed, low maintenance lifestyle. The Woodlands features 18 beautiful home sites, some along fairways and some secluded with towering hardwoods. Owning at Mistwood Greens has never been so good as each purchaser receives 5 YEARS OF FREE GOLF.

The White course is an exhilarating links-style design, with strategic bunkering, native knee-high fescue grasses lapping at the fairways, and sweeping, lightning quick greens. Winds play mightily into your shot selection on the White course, which sits on the east side of Ole White Road, across from the clubhouse. The first five holes play back and forth in a north-south direction. Holes 6 through 9 work you back to the clubhouse and grill in a northwesterly fashion. Hallmarks of the White course are the par 5, 537 yard third hole and the risk-reward par 4 sixth hole, measuring a mere 334 yards from the back tees. The most challenging of the courses at Mistwood is the Red, which is where many scores end up. The first hole is a docile par 4 measuring 373 yards and plays straight away downhill. The Red par 5 fifth hole can yield birdies, measuring just 512 yards, but it also tempts trouble. Be aware of the slippery green, which slopes from front to back. The Red par four 7th and 9th holes are the gems on this nine. Seven plays over a lake to an elevated green. Nine is 419 yards of brawn, playing uphill all the way. However you mix and match your round you’re promised an exceptional day at a value not found at many other courses in Northern Michigan.

Once again, golfers have told us what they consider most important when choosing where to play golf: weather and course conditions. Now, while we would like to think we can control the weather, Superintendent Jack Thomasma and Director of Golf Chris Sobieck have achieved the pinnacle for making the course beautiful to play. New plans for 2006 include a permanent pavilion west of the clubhouse that will seat up to 300 for the many golf and social events held at the facility. As they host numerous events each season, Thornapple Pointe has become one of the premier facilities to host a first class golf outing. Improvements are noticed from the outset where three new bunkers guard the left side of the opening 453-yard (back tees) par 4-hole. The right side fairway bunker has been repositioned and the fairway contoured with a left-to-right bend to accommodate the styling of the left side bunkers. New bunkers on #’s 9 and 13 also will add to the challenge at Thornapple Pointe. A directional bunker was placed on the left side of the fairway about 280 yards from the championship tee on the 433-yard par 4 third hole. A series of three

bunkers now guard the right side. The most inspired re-creation is the par 4, 330-yard 18th hole. Judicious course management will be required to avoid three new fairway bunkers, two of which are tucked into the right dogleg and the other perfectly awaits 250-yard tee shots to the middle of the fairway. “Jack and I fought over the bunkers,” said Sobieck, who proudly stakes claim to the new look of the closing hole. The par-5s at Thornapple Pointe have long been favorites in the area. From the extended blue tee box, hole No. 5 will measure about 630-yards. No. 7 has been enhanced to championship caliber, stretching to a little over 500-yards with a 220-yard forced carry off the tee. Hole 13 is another near-certain 3-shot par five from the back tees, which now measures 580-yards, and boasts a new right side fairway bunker. The hallmark of the “new” Thornapple is the greens; truly you will be hard pressed to find better putting surfaces in the state. Paved cart paths have been added for the entire length of the course. The on-cart Global Positioning System gives pinpoint accuracy from ball to flagstick.

McGuire’s

We always see great stories of success start off as a simple idea or business and McGuire’s Resort has ties to those simple charms and ideas that someone had. Curly McGuire was a traveling salesman from Chicago who frequented the Cadillac area and the view overlooking the Mackinaw Trail from 1,468ft above sea level captured him. He bought the land for a family home and with travelers increasing, he began selling lemonade to those driving by, that turned into a hamburger stand with curb service, which then grew to a restaurant, and finally the lodging and golf were added. When US 131 was built in the 1980’s, the resort matured as well, adding conference space and more rooms and more great golf. As years have past, McGuire’s has maintained its well-known reputation for excellent food with special service, highlighted by the golf and lodging packages that have patrons returning year after year. The relaxed atmosphere allows visitors to “travel” at their own pace and enjoy the natural surroundings the resort offers. In the spring, McGuire’s offers their HOT SHOT special, from only $59.00 per person, based on double occupan-

cy, because lets face it, who likes to play alone? The package has a few different choices, so contact the resort for details. As Cadillac and Northern Michigan have grown, McGuire’s has seen each area of its business grow, too. A full service restaurant, conference center and lively Bar and Grill called of course, Curly’s after the founder. Amenities at McGuire’s include an indoor pool, sauna and whirlpool, game room and a fireside lounge. Looking for more fun? Twenty-seven holes of golf, volleyball, horseshoes, basketball and shuffleboard dot the resort so there is a choice for everyone visiting. The Terrace Room Restaurant offers an elegant atmosphere yet comfortable for after golf dining. Cadillac’s finest Sunday Brunch and Saturday Night Buffet are staples in the restaurant that overlooks the golf course with excellent view of Lake Cadillac. Live entertainment from the region is a new highlight for McGuire’s and The Terrace Room. Opened way back in 1949, this family owned resort has withstood time, and has been perfectly updated to match the changing years as well as evolving travelers.

Pristine, unique, contemporary, timeless, breathtaking, challenging, exhilarating… Any and all of these words might be used to describe your experience at AGa-Ming Golf Resort. Sundance, northern Michigan’s premier resort course opened to rave reviews in 2005 and is nominated for Golf Digest’s upscale resort course of the year. Designed by architect Jerry Matthews with assistance from international golf course shaper Steve St. James, Sundance is perhaps the finest example of neo-classical links style design found in the great lakes region. Born of a landscape etched by the unyielding march of ancient glaciers and surrounded by a veritable artist’s palette of iridescent blues and greens, Sundance blends as seamlessly into the natural environment as do the wild trilliums that grace the surrounding forest floor. Sundance promises to provide the ultimate golf experience for either the scratch golfer or the weekend duffer. Large undulating greens, beautifully sculpted fairways with receptive landing areas, and scenic vistas are sure to please even the most discriminating golfer. A-Ga-Ming’s original course, now named the “Torch,” continues to be a time-tested favorite for those favoring the challenge of a traditional woodlands

course. The Torch meanders through a mix of mature hardwood forests, dense cedar groves and rolling terrain featuring the best views of Torch Lake. Ten years ago the A-Ga-Ming legacy was transferred to it’s current owners, Mike Brown and Larry Lavely, whose vision for the future and conscientious stewardship is guiding operations through an ambitious period of growth. In addition to the popular on site condominiums currently available for guest stays and golf packages, a 60 room lodge is proposed that will complement the new clubhouse slated to open in 2007. Featuring commanding views of Torch Lake as well as both golf courses, the new clubhouse will have a full service restaurant, business conference facilities and a grand ballroom for weddings and other large functions. An overview of some of the other major changes designed to usher the resort into a four season facility include exclusive residential real estate developments and an on-going renovation program to update the Torch course. Current residential offerings feature the Lakeview Ridge development, a private gated enclave limited to 14 single-family home sites and the cottages which will be upscale Northern Michigan inspired architecture.

Ravines

A

A truly unique golf encounter aptly applies to Ravines Golf Club in Saugatuck. Not many rival the demanding Arnold Palmer design with its natural landforms throughout the property. Add to this a full- service practice facility and a charming clubhouse named after The King himself, Arnie’s Cottage. Award winning food selection completes a perfect day of golf. The Ravines, a true Michigan Monster, measures 7,132 yards from the back tees with a slope of 142 and course rating of 73.9. It’s a demanding track requiring smart play and good shot making decisions, but with five teeing stations you can trim course distance to match your playing ability. Each of the par 5s add to Ravines being set apart from other courses on the west coast of Michigan. Collectively they average 558 yards in length, with the longest being 623 yards and the shortest measuring 490 yards. You encounter the first par 5 at hole No. 4. Even the best golfers will be challenged to reach the green in two shots. Play it as a true three-shot par 5 allowing for two putting strokes for your par. Water on the par 5 ninth hole can be easily reached from the tee box, and it will flirt with the left side of the

fairway all the way to the green. The better part of valor is to play this hole as a true par 5, allowing for a 100yard-or-less approach to the carefully guarded green. Ravines Golf Club earns its lore on the backside where the namesake ravine resides. The valley first appears on the par three 12th hole. Measuring 165 yards, this hole is all carry. Short is disaster and long is trouble. Then it’s on to hole 14 where the ravine really begins to play in your physique; a beauty of a par 5 that has few rivals in the Wolverine state. A cathedral of pine trees line both sides on the path to this 623 yard adventure. Play the proper tee here, as it takes 250 yards of carry from the back tees to carry the ravine. There’s no shame in moving up a set of tees. A fairway wood second shot leaves a nice third shot to a fairly large green with wetlands guarding the front. Ravines has become a great stop on the lakeshore. Many visitors from Chicago have enjoyed the course, and now you can own a piece of it yourself. Home sites and real estate are for sale with houses continuing to mark the landscape. Single-family homes to larger estate dwellings will continue to popularize this oasis of golf in the lakeside town of Saugatuck. Visit them on their website or call for real estate information.

The inimitable Lake Michigan Hills Golf Club sits in eye view of I-196 travelers beckoning passersby to come play one of Lake Michigan shoreline’s more pleasurable yet demanding layouts. Opened in 1969 this Michiana favorite is home to the Western Amateur qualifier and only 90 minutes from the Windy City. Your driving skill is tested at the very first tee, a 449yard par 4 that looks out over a very tight fairway some 60 feet below with water on the left. That same hazard is in play on hole No. 2 as you make a 180-degree turn on a par 4 measuring 404 yards. This green is deceptively uphill with a moderately fast back-to-front slope. After a par 3, the longest of the par 5s, 577 yards, greets you at hole four. This is one of the few grip-it and rip-it holes, but don’t err to the left. Incidentally, this is the number one handicap hole. Hole No. 5, 410 yards from the back tees, plays a bit tougher than the handicap indicates because a drive too far left or right from the center of the fairway makes your approach a bit testy. On the other hand, reach the crest of the hill, and your ball feeds down to within a short iron from the green. Hole seven, a par 5 of 485 yards, suggests birdie and boasts a green large enough to also carry a flagstick for

the par-5 tenth hole, which would make for a great opening hole at 544 yards, but serves the purpose nonetheless as a superb entree for the back nine. Hole eleven offers an excellent chance for birdie, requiring nothing more than a fairway wood from the tee, but avoid driving through the fairway on this left dogleg. That’s jail. The left dogleg No. 14 hole challenges the other 17 as a course favorite. It measures 396 yards with a hill on the left that guards the green from being seen from the tee. A well-placed drive will leave you a short iron to a green that slopes away. After a par 5 that can be reached in two shots, fourteens twin is number 16, only 20 yards longer. Hole seventeen is a par 3, all up hill, and measures 231 yards. Make par here so you can close with a birdie on the 368-yard, slight dogleg right closing hole. The Charles Maddox design of Lake Michigan Hills pays homage to design of yore that places a premium on club selection and course management. The course will test your skill as a shot-maker with accuracy off the tee a must. And for the ever growing ladies golf market, every Thursday ladies play for $25 which includes cart and lunch.

2006 will see 11 of Art Hills creations as members of a Michigan Golf Trail like no other. This year our journey on the trail starts in the Motor City, for 5 of Hills’ designs beginning with Fieldstone Golf Club. Owned by the City of Auburn Hills and opened in 1998, it plays host to the Monday qualifier for The Buick Open. Hills newest creation in Michigan is next at Lyon Oaks. Opening in 2002, it has been called one of the best county parks you’ll play. Shot making is key on the back nine as hazards are plentiful. The City of Taylor is our next destination and two courses, Lakes of Taylor and Taylor Meadows offer a nice 36 hole excursion in close proximity. Next stop, Pheasant Run Golf Club in Canton, now 27 holes, it continues to be a real treat as course conditions are always top notch. We now head a bit West to the state capital area, with a stop on the trail at one of Art Hills’ alma maters, Michigan State University and Forest Akers West. Opened in 1958 and redesigned by Hills in 1992, not only great golf is here, but the 128 Candlewood Suites offer extended stay options. We now head a bit East on I-69 and then head North to Red Hawk Golf Club in Tawas City, a bit off the beaten path, but worth the journey for sure. Not overly long at 6,589, but an excellent test for shot making. Course conditions here are exceptional. Traveling to the West, we arrive in the

Imagine turning back the clock of time to the early 1960s and loading up the clubs in the back of a Cadillac with wings, a pre-classic ’57 Chevy or a tightly packed Nash Rambler for an overnight stay at a golf resort. It was a time when you could put a “Tiger in your tank” and woods were actually made out of wood. Persimmon drivers were state of the art and “Big Bertha” was the nickname for the “Forty-five years ago, our golf lunch lady at school. Arnie’s legend was operation was very, very simple, growing, Jack was still a the golf pro did everything. With chubby kid and Gary was becoming a great Player. The entire PGA only nine holes, he was also Tour was comprised of the greens keeper.” golfers who now can only be seen playing on — Jim McGuire the Champions Tour. “Stay and Play” was not yet a buzzword for the combination of lodging and golf. For most, stay and play was not really an option. Unlike today, there were only a handful of resorts that offered both golf and overnight lodging accommodations in the early 1960s. Private clubs offered many amenities to its highpriced patrons, but the public golfer had to resort to what was available. While the offerings in Michigan were somewhat limited, the era represented the beginnings of stay-and-play golf as it is now known and embraced in

Michigan. The places that did offer stay-and-play packages provided a mixture of golf, sun and fun, overnight lodging and good food to go with it. It was a time when the family ownerships at Gull Lake and McGuire’s began making their niches on Michigan’s golf landscape as places that provided golf to the public during the daytime followed by overnight lodging. “Forty-five years ago, our golf operation was very, very simple,” said Jim McGuire, the second of three generations of management at McGuire’s Resort in Cadillac. “The golf pro did everything. With only nine holes, he was also the greens keeper. “A lot of courses had their pro as their greens keeper. As we expanded our bookings, our tee times were a major problem. Then we’d add more rooms and that would put more pressure on tee times.” Golf carts, if available, had only three wheels. A 59 had not yet been carded in a professional round of golf and seemed about as improbable as man walking on the moon. “Our first carts were three-wheeled Vikings with a tiller,” Gull Lake View’s Jim Scott recalls. “When we first opened, we were more of a local golf business with a little bit of traveling golfer. “When we got into lodging, we chose to target either corporate or the recreational golfer. Now, we’ve had groups coming here as long as 35 years on the same weekend every year. There is a lot going on with the golf, the lake and water sports, and Kalamazoo is not far away.” Unlike today, driving three or four hours for a golf excursion was a major trip or vacation and families packed their cars for the long haul. “It used to be that families left home or skipped work on Friday and would come in and play nine holes Friday and Saturday,” Jim McGuire said. “They were not going on to other destinations. Their outing was two or three days of fun and golfing at our resort.” McGuire’s opened its first nine holes for play in 1961. It became an 18-hole golf course in 1971. “We were one of the early This 1970s overhead view of Mcguire’s shows the renovation of the main lodge and new restaurant on the building to the far right, with addition of bunkering to several of the original golf holes and the expansion to 27 holes of golf.

(resorts) as far as packaging golf and lodging,” McGuire said. “Everyone wanted to have a package. We’ve altered the packages over the years to include 18 holes a day or as many holes as you can get in during a day.” At Gull Lake, Scott grew up in the golf and lodging business. His father, Darl, started building Gull Lake’s West Course in the late 1950s. The first nine holes were opened in 1963 -- two years after the Gull Lake Motel was built -- and the allure of combining golf with the overnight stay caught on. “People started coming in for the weekend to stay and go to the famous (Gull Harbor Inn) restaurant that was here, and playing golf was sort of a biproduct of their stay,” Jim Scott said. “A group would come and play golf and stay for the big dinner on Saturday night,

Page 68

and nobody thought much about it. But business grew from that.” Gull Lake opened a second nine holes and clubhouse in 1965, and the stay-and-play business was in full swing. The location – halfway between Detroit and Chicago – was alluring. At the time, Garland was still being carved out of farmlands and wetlands and did not yet offer lodging. Resorts that were already making tracks during ski season in Michigan’s Winter Wonderland – such as Otsego Club and Boyne – were exploring the golf industry as a way to keep their business going all year long. Hopping in the car to drive four or five hours to play a round of golf seemed to be as unfathomable as a mere mortal hitting a golf ball 300 yards. “When you look back at it, we were

probably one of the first stand alone golf course destinations in the state,” Scott said. “There were other resorts that eventually built golf courses as a supplement to their ski businesses.” Over the next 20 years, other resorts – at Boyne, Grand Traverse, and Crystal Mountain, among others – built golf courses to complement their outstanding lodging and ski facilit Otsego Club introduced golf to its ski and lodging operations in the 1950s with a course designed by William Diddle, who was one of the premier architects of his era. But the resort remained private and for members only until it opened for public play in the mid-1980s. Around the same time, Garland – under the direction of Ron Otto -- became a major player in the stay-and-play industry with its cabin lodges and multiple golf courses on site. Along with a big “G” located somewhere in the name, Gull Lake and McGuire’s share a common bond: they were lodging sites first and began their golf operations around the same time with nine-hole courses. Those first nine-hole courses were built by family members at the respective sites and represented the beginning of stay-and-play resort golf in Michigan as it is now known. Jim McGuire cleared land and helped build the first nine holes before designing the second nine holes, which opened 10 years later. The third nine opened in 1980. “It wasn’t designed that way, but we opened a new nine every 10 years,” Jim McGuire said. “The original nine holes did well, but after a while people got tired of playing the same nine holes.” Like his neighbor to the north, Scott helped accommodate the growth at Gull Lake View with his labor and design work on the Gull Lake West and Gull Lake East courses. The East Course was added in the early 1970s. It was funded, in part, by selling off the Gull Lake Motel at the corner. With two 18-hole courses and only one small hotel at the corner, housing villas were added. The 64 Fairway Villas all feature four beds, kitchen and a common room in the midGull Lake View Golf Club and Resort has become the top golf destination in Southwest Michigan, offering 90 holes of golf, year-round lodging and a conference and banquet facility. Upon opening, greens fees were $1.50 for nine holes.

dle. Gull Lake View has since grown to a five-course property and reigns as Southwest Michigan’s largest standalone resort. “It was pretty much in response to our market,” Scott said. “By today’s standards, our golf courses are really short, but they are fun courses for the average players because they can score on them. The nice thing about our five courses is that they are all a little bit different with their own characteristics. They are not just cookie cutter designs. “It is perfect for a golf group.” Those original stay-and-play resorts have survived and thrived during the test of time as other multi-faceted facilities and world-class golf courses have turned the state into a golfer’s paradise. “There was a perception 10 years ago that the average golfer would be willing to pay $100 for a round of golf, and courses were built with that in mind,” Jim McGuire said. “We now have a lot of exceptional golf courses, but the economy is to the point where it is difficult to support them financially. “The one thing we can really do at our resort is to make sure that we exceed everyone’s expectations while they are here. That’s hard to do today, because everybody has very high expectations and people are very particular and want everything just right. We bend over backwards to make it right and enjoyable.” McGuire’s and Gull Lake View have remained family owned during their various phases of expansion, renovation and innovation. That family owned tradition has emerged as a key for success in Michigan’s stay-and-play golf industry. Like the two fore-runners, many of the state’s major resorts – including Crystal Mountain, Boyne and Garland -- have had successive generations running the operations. “I think by having it in the family – and the same is probably true with some of the other resorts in Michigan – you have that continuity and long range vision that is followed through,” Scott said. “The customers who come back year after year like to see a lot of familiar faces. “Some of the courses that have been through a lot of owners still have a learning curve with their new owners. A family owned business just has more consistency and the experience people depend on year after year.” w
