ontheTee Before 1990, my only contact with golf, not counting the first round I played with my future father-in-law in a pair of mukluks, was via the television watching The Masters or the old Bing Crosby Pro-Am at Pebble Beach.

On The Cover: Bay Harbor Golf Hole #1 Photo by Brian Walters, Courtesy Bay Harbor

With only three network television stations to choose from and little in the way of sports programming, golf provided an escape from the dreary, slate-gray days of late winter and early spring in Indiana. As my playing time increased and improved, I became increasingly intrigued with course design; how each layout added or took away from my enjoyment of the game. Willie Park Jr. of Musselburgh, Scotland (1864-1925), architect of Olympia Fields in Chicago and four courses in Michigan (Red Run, Flint CC, Meadowbrook and Battle Creek CC) is the man historians regard as the father of golf course architecture as a profession. It was Park who popularized the movement of golf away from seaside links layouts to heathlands or inland designs. Present day architects owe much to Park and we owe our enjoyment of the game to these protégés. The usual suspects, when it comes to Michigan golf course design, are the Matthews family: W. Bruce senior, his son Jerry, and Bruce’s grandson, Bruce Matthews III. They alone account for nearly 200 Michigan layouts. Add Mike DeVries, Ray Hearn, Jeff Gorney, Tom Doak, Rick Smith and Art Hills and you’re talking one in every three Michigan public courses being designed by this group of individuals. Tom Doak has the fewest Michigan designs among this elite group but his renown is worldwide. Jason Deegan tracked down Michigan’s most wanted golf course designers and share’s their approach to design. Eagle Eye Golf Club in Bath has been climbing the charts as one of Michigan’s premier golf destinations. The Michigan PGA moved its headquarters to the sprawling Daryl Kessler golf compound in 2005. Shortly thereafter, the Michigan PGA Championship moved to Eagle Eye. Eagle Eye opens the 2007 golf season as Michigan’s Golf Course of the Year, so crowned by the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association. Can it be? The Gaylord Golf Mecca celebrates 20 years as the epicenter of Michigan Summer Destination golf. No better time to introduce the new owners of the Otsego Club – Osprey Recreational Properties. They also own and operate Manistee National Golf and Resort, Black Forest and The Medalist, to name a few Michigan operations. Every day is a day at the beach in golf paradise, made more so by the Beeches Golf Club in the Lake Michigan shore-side community of South Haven. Learn more about this new course and aids and accessories to improving your enjoyment of the game in our From The Tips section. Wherever your golf travels take you this season, Swing Easy,

MGCOA dots the Eye Anyone who has played the 2006 Michigan Golf Course Owners Association Golf Course of the Year can attest that Eagle Eye Golf Club in East Lansing (Bath) is a world-class golf course with exceptional management and facilities. Owner Daryl Kesler and his staff of golf and hospitality professionals earned the highest marks in the criteria of exceptional course quality, quality of ownership and management, outstanding contribution to the community and significant contribution to the game. Kesler called on Chris Lutzke, a long time protégé of Pete Dye, to handle the course design at Eagle Eye. Lutzke had been instrumental seven years earlier supervising the construction of Hawk Hollow, Eagle Eye’s equally dramatic sister course. It was he who wanted to replicate Dye’s famous 17th hole island green at the TPC Tournament Course at Sawgrass. Every hole of Eagle Eye is rich with challenge and beauty, from the subtlety of the opening par 4 through the demanding par five 18th. Water is in play on 12 of the 18 holes. Hawk Hollow Golf Properties (HHGP) — the umbrella company under which Eagle Eye Golf Club operates — consists of the award-winning 18 holes at Eagle Eye; Hawk Hollow Golf Course, a 27-hole complex rated 4 stars by Golf Digest; The Falcon Golf Course, a nine-hole walking course; and Little Hawk, an 18-hole all-natural grass putting course; as well as three multi-tiered driving ranges, four practice putting greens and an exceptional short game practice area. Overriding everything in the course design, maintenance and operation is the leadership of Kesler and his family who guide management of the course, as well as Michigan’s most dramatic and beautiful banquet facility that provides seating for up to 1,000 guests. That leadership has established a “customer first” approach. COURTESY EAGLE EYE

The golf course staff is dedicated to providing an experience that exceeds customer expectations in a professional and friendly manner. Employee retention rates above 87 percent indicate that the work atmosphere is both enjoyable and rewarding. Annually, three officiated and wellorganized junior tournaments are held throughout the summer. High school and college teams are allowed to use the facilities and courses for practice and certain events — usually at no cost to the team or school. HHGP hosts tournaments for the above groups and the Greater Lansing Amateur Golf Association. These include U.S. Open qualifiers, Michigan Open and Michigan Amateur qualifiers, GAM special events

and city tournaments. This year and next, HHGP plays host to the Michigan PGA Championship. The Michigan Publinx Senior Amateur was also contested at Hawk Hollow and Eagle Eye in 2006, an event that will return in 2007. The PGA of Michigan’s new headquarters is located immediately off the first tee at Eagle Eye. A major contribution to the good of the game has been “responsible pricing.” Kesler remains committed to providing meaningful “value for dollars spent.” “By supporting this basic philosophy, more customers are exposed to the joy and reward we all receive from the game,” said Kesler.

Osprey Spreads Wings With the purchase of the Otsego Club in Gaylord at an auction last October, Osprey Recreational Properties went from just a bit player in Michigan’s golf scene to one of the leaders in the clubhouse. The Brighton-based company now owns eight Michigan courses and has taken up promoting junior and amateur golf. Osprey Managing Partner Mike Biber learned the game from his father, Walter, the golf professional at Kalamazoo Country Club for many years. He’s happy to give back. “Golf teaches people great lessons, including being honest, patient and focused,” Biber said.

14

MICHIGAN GOLF 2007

Osprey, a multi-faceted and full-service real estate company that owns and manages more than 4 million square feet of commercial property in Michigan, Florida and North Carolina, got into the golf business by buying up six quality courses worth the drive to play: Black Forest and Wilderness Valley in Gaylord; Manistee National Golf and Resort, featuring Canthooke Valley and Cutter’s Ridge in Manistee; The Medalist in Marshall; and Ridgeview Golf Course in Kalamazoo. Add Otsego Club’s The Classic course, a William Diddle design, and The Tribute, a sprawling Gary Koch-Rick Robbins cre-

ation, and Osprey is positioned to make a splash in the popular Gaylord Golf Mecca market. In 2006, Osprey also initiated a formal scholarship program for junior golfers by awarding academic scholarships and Ryder Cup trips to two deserving amateur players. Osprey also awarded two Ryder Cup trips by random drawing, open to high school golf coaches and GAM members.

A Day at the Beeches For decades South Haven, a southwest Michigan resort town on the shores of Lake Michigan has been a favorite destination for travelers from throughout the Midwest. In 2007, South Haven will celebrate the first full year of operation of the Beeches Golf Club, a residential development and 18-hole championship golf course designed by award-winning Michigan architect W. Bruce Matthews III. “South Haven is a wonderful town and community whose population swells each summer with visitors from southeast Michigan, Indiana and metropolitan Chicago,” said Matthews. “But until now, it’s been one of the few areas in the Great Lakes region where there’s been both room and the need for more courses and affordable golf. I think we’ve done well on providing both at the Beeches.” The club’s name is taken from the scores of beech trees found on the property, including a majestic giant beech that sits in close proximity to the clubhouse and 18th green. “That tree was the unmistakable centerpiece of the property,” said General Manager Jason

18

MICHIGAN GOLF 2007

Fargo. “Bruce realized it immediately and wanted to use it as both a strategic and aesthetic focal point of the golf course.” The front nine of the Beeches includes the tricky par-four third, a hole of only 320 yards that is bordered the entire distance of the hole on the left by the first of six large ponds on the property. Matthews has also made good use of sandy waste areas throughout the course that add teeth to the test. The back nine incorporates most of the rest of the water on the course and finishes with the 420yard 18th, where the green is guarded to the right by another pond. “It’s a challenging but pleasing way to end the round,” said Matthews. “The giant beech frames the hole on the left, and the water on the right means players will have to be on their best behavior when they approach this green!” Matthews said the Beeches will also boast a third nine holes in the years ahead. With five sets of tees, the Beeches Golf Club ranges in length from forward tees of 5,005 yards to 7,115 from the back tees. “Because of our close proximity to Lake Michigan, we didn’t feel the need to load

the design with a lot of obstacles,” said Fargo. “The changing winds provide the variety in playability for us.” Best of all, says Fargo, is that Matthews’ thoughtful design will allow the club to operate with an affordable rate structure for its visitors. “It was important for us to build a course people around here can always afford to play,” he said. “The initial response we’ve had from patrons is that we’ve done very well in that regard.” In its first phase, Beeches will also feature 22 residential condominiums with golf course views. “We’ve been amazed at the enthusiastic interest in the property,” said Fargo. “It’s indicative of the growing popularity of the South Haven area.” The Beeches Golf Club is W. Bruce Matthews III’s first Michigan design since Angels Crossing in Vicksburg, a course that received national recognition from Golf Digest magazine two years ago. More information on 2007 rates and the residential development is available at (269) 637-2600 or through the club’s Web site, www.beechesgolfclub.com

20/20 It started as a simple idea in 1987 – to promote seven area courses. Two decades later, the Gaylord Golf Mecca celebrates its 20th anniversary as a true success story. The Midwest’s Summer Golf Capital, as it is known, has grown to include more than 20 golf courses and more than 20 hotel properties, all within a 45-minute drive. The courses do more than 350,000 rounds of golf annually every summer. “I would not have imagined we would experience the growth we have,” said Paul Beachnau, executive director of the Gaylord Area Convention and Tourism Bureau and one of the Mecca’s founders. “When we pulled everyone together to do this, golf was at an upswing, excuse the pun, on players getting out there.” Much has changed for the Mecca’s seven founding members – the Robert Trent Jones’ Masterpiece at Treetops Resort, the East and West courses at Garland, Michaywe Pines, the Gaylord Country Club, Wilderness Valley and the Classic at the Otsego Club. Treetops, Wilderness Valley, the Otsego Club and Garland have all added courses over the years. The Pines received an extensive renovation by Don Childs in 2004. Other standout courses, such as Black Lake in Onaway and Elk Ridge in Atlanta, have been built and added to the group. Despite the changes, one constant remains: the cooperation that keeps the Mecca alive and well. Beachnau is proud that rounds went up 4 percent in 2005 during a lean year for the golf industry. “We have a spirit of cooperation to be envied around the state,” Beachnau said. “If it wasn’t for those properties (staying together in tough economic times), it would be easy to say they will go on their own. That is really the time to stick together.” For more information, visit www. gaylordgolfmecca.com.

Even if you’re a Wolverine fan, every golfer in Michigan must give thanks to Michigan State University. Almost every noted golf course architect either born or living in this state, names like Jerry Matthews, Bruce Matthews III, Arthur Hills, Ray Hearn, Jeff Gorney and Harry Bowers, have graduated from MSU, many from its famed landscape architecture program. Others, like Mike DeVries, Mike Husby and Tom Doak, have transplanted themselves in Michigan, because of its dynamic golf scene. Combined, these local architects have given us some of Michigan’s greatest courses. They are the usual suspects; the faces behind the tracks you love. To celebrate their achievements, here’s an in-depth guide to Michigan’s architects, including profiles of five of the most prolific and a compelling interview with Doak, currently one of the game’s hottest names.

Two Michigan natives have had a big hand in its golf scene: Arthur Hills and Rick Smith. Nobody has more celebrated public designs in Michigan than Hills, who grew up in Dexter and has degrees from both the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. He’s contributed 17 public courses in Michigan. Eleven of those comprise the Art Hills Golf Trail, with headliners such as the 27-hole Bay Harbor Golf Club in Petoskey, (on front cover) the Hills’ course at Boyne Highlands, HawksHead in South Haven and Red Hawk in Tawas. The Legacy in Ottawa Lake and Shepherd’s Hollow in Clarkston aren’t connected to the trail but are just as good. Smith, Phil Mickelson’s swing guru, is best known for designing the Tradition, the Signature and the par-3 Threetops course at Treetops Resort in Gaylord, the resort he now co-owns. He and Warren Henderson helped mold the miracle that is now Arcadia Bluffs, generally considered the No. 1 public course in the state. MICHIGAN GOLF 2007

Jerry Matthews

I wanted to be a conservation officer. My dad talked me out of that.

Timber Ridge in Lansing. Timberstone in Iron Mountain. Elk Ridge in Atlanta. St. Ives in Stanwood. Those are just some of the fabulous courses designed by Jerry Matthews and his Lansing firm, Natural Course Design, but they don’t speak to the depth of Matthews’ impact on golf throughout the state. He’s designed more courses here than any other architect – 72 according to his Web site, plus a handful of other nine-hole additions and renovations. The way he tells it, his career was almost by accident. “I didn’t plan to do this at all,” he said. “My dad (W. Bruce Matthews Sr.) sent me to Michigan State University. I wanted to be a conservation officer. Hunting and fishing and the outdoors was my life. My dad talked me out of that.” In 1960, Jerry went to work in his father’s new golf course design business, while getting a master’s degree in urban planning from MSU. Jerry’s first assignment, working on nine holes at the Flint Elks Golf Club, put that degree on the shelf for good. Jerry took over as president from his father in 1979. The golf booms of the 1980s and late 1990s fed his portfolio. “I have a lot of pride in what I’ve done,” Matthews said. “A lot of them will be there a long time.” Matthews’ mantra of designing courses for the average player while sprinkling in visual flair continues today. More than 120 bunkers litter his latest creation, the Sundance at A-Ga-Ming Resort in Kewadin. Matthews’ big project this summer will be transforming all the fairways to bentgrass and installing new irrigation at the course at the Grand Hotel on Mackina Island. “I want people to have fun playing golf,” he said. “I think golf should be challenging, but I think it should be fair. It should be visually attractive. That’s a big part of the game.”

Mike DeVries

I want the land to dictate the design and not the opposite.

Mike DeVries has worked with some great architects, notably Tom Doak and Tom Fazio, but his best training came during his early years, growing up playing at Crystal Downs Country Club, a classic design of the great Alister MacKenzie. “Crystal Downs, it really influenced me,” he said. “It led me to say, ‘This is what I want to do, design golf courses.’” DeVries, 42, of Traverse City, has made a name for himself since he helped pull together Pilgrim’s Run in the late 1990s. With his deft touch, the Kingsley Club near Traverse City transformed into a classic almost overnight, offering naturalistic features of links golf balanced by the strategic element of the holes. Golfweek magazine ranks it as one of its Top 100 Modern Designs built after 1960. The effort handed DeVries another gem. He beat out more than a dozen other architects for the Greywalls course at Marquette Golf & Country Club. Sensory overload comes in the form of 60-foot rock walls and elevated tees that stare off into the horizon. The Mines in Grand Rapids, which opened in 2006, and Diamond Springs in Hamilton, built with friend Kris Shumaker and opened in 2003, are also generally well liked. DeVries said his design philosophy is dictated by the land. “Every piece of property has a unique quality,” he said. “I try to maximize that quality. I want the land to dictate the design and not the opposite. It’s reactionary architecture.” A perfect example would be the punchbowl greens DeVries crafted on the fourth, fifth and 18th holes at the Kingsley Club. “The drainage is there. People think we are nuts, but it works there,” he said. DeVries loves his courses like Kingsley and The Mines to play firm and fast. “If you provide conditions for a ground game, if you don’t put a bunker in front of every hole, it leads to more creative golf and makes it more exciting and challenging on a daily basis for every golfer,” he said.

Bruce Matthews 111

I like giving people room to play golf.

Like his uncle Jerry, Bruce Matthews III grew up around golf. He joined his grandfather’s firm in 1986 after three different superintendent jobs. His first project was a nine-hole addition to Crystal Lake in Buelah, a course his grandfather designed. Bruce worked with Jerry at Timber Ridge before going his own way in 1991. Matthews, working out of Okemos, has completed 21 full 18-hole designs since then, most notably Hidden River Golf and Casting Club in Brutus in 1998 and Angels Crossing in Vicksburg in 2004. “I give credit to grandpa and Jerry for what I do and a lot of what I don’t do,” he said. “They showed me both good and bad, more good than bad.” Matthews said his No. 1 objective in design would be to “meld the client, the land and the game of golf together into a successful project.” “I like larger tees and bigger greens,” he said. “I like giving people room to play golf. I don’t like forced carries, especially in front of the greens.” His Beeches Golf Club in South Haven opens for a full season in 2007. “My specialty is we are giving a lot of golf for a value price,” he said. “That’s what a lot of my designs turned out to be. It will be a $45 golf course. It looks like a $75 course. We saved on construction costs at the Beeches. Angels Crossing is the same. They are $100 courses for cheap.” Most of his work this year will involve redesigns. Matthews doesn’t mind that he hasn’t achieved the fame of his uncle, or developed a national reputation. He hates traveling by plane and sticks to projects within a five-hour drive, giving him a radius of Indianapolis, Chicago, Toronto and Columbus to work within. “I am a regional architect and I know who I am,” he said. “I am not Jack Nicklaus or his troops. I like Michigan and the Midwest. Enough people have called, I don’t have to go anywhere else to work. It’s fun. I will be here for a long time.”

You might not recognize the names of these Michigan architects, but they’re still active and well-respected by industry insiders. • Don Childs: The 71-yearold from Commerce Township is best known for the Gaylord Country Club and Michaywe Pines, two playable favorites in Gaylord. His redesigned Farmington Hills Golf Club transformed an old landfill into a good course. • Mike Husby: The current general manager at Candlestone Inn & Resort (Jerry Matthews’ first course) in Belding built the Wild Bluff course at Bay Mills Resort good enough to host a Canadian Tour event. His

The Loon Loon and Marsh Ridge designs are two Gaylord stalwarts. • Paul Albanese and Chris Lutzke: The two budding stars who met while working with Jerry Matthews have joined together, opening an office in Plymouth. Lutzke, a for-

For decades, Michigan owners have dabbled in course design, laying out their own courses to save a few bucks and have a bigger voice in its construction. A few have had some real success. • Charles Scott: The co-CEO of the Gull Lake View Resort in Augusta has done three courses in his property, the Gull LakeView East course and the Stonehedge North and South courses, as well as lower-profile projects such as Indian Run in Scotts, the Lynx of Allegan, Lake Doster in Plainwell and Binder Park in Kalamazoo.

mer Pete Dye associate, made waves with Eagle Eye in Bath. Albanese was Ray Hearn’s lead architect at Moose Ridge. The duo made national news by reconstructing bunkers at a country club in Indiana with a horse and plow, much like designers did decades ago. • Harry Bowers: The South Lyon resident does most of his work now in Florida and the Caribbean, working with big names like former PGA players Raymond Floyd and Ian Baker-Finch. He’s best known locally for the Rock at Drummond Island, the Captain’s Club in Grand Blanc and two good municipal courses, Pierce Lake in Chelsea and Inkster Valley.

• Jim Dewling and Pat Conroy: Dewling, president of Total Golf, a golf management company, did Beacon Hill in Commerce Township on his own and combined with Conroy to do 27 good holes at Boulder Pointe in Oxford and Mystic Creek in Milford and 18 playable holes at Timber Trace Golf Club near Pinckney. • Ron Otto: The second generation owner designed all four courses – the Fountains, Swampfire, Monarch and Reflections – and is working on a fifth at Garland Resort in Lewiston.

Ray Hearn

I’ll put The Grande, Yarrow & The Hemlock up against any course in the state.

Contrary to popular belief, Ray Hearn never really left the design business. When Hearn took the job as general manager in 2003 at Macatawa Legends, his private club design in Holland, he still had seven projects to finish. When the GM thing didn’t work out as planned, Hearn returned to design full-time, staying in Holland. Hearn, who helped create Twin Lakes in Rochester and The Majestic at Lake Walden in Hartland as a Matthews associate for 10 years, has a knack for squeezing every ounce of charisma out of a site, even on the tightest of budgets. Going out on his own in 1996, Hearn crafted courses in Oklahoma and Illinois before hitting a home run at Island Hills in Centreville. The scenic Moose Ridge near South Lyon in 2000 kicked off a stretch of memorable designs: the Grande Golf Club in Jackson, the award-winning Strategic Fox at Fox Hills in Plymouth in 2001, and the Hemlock in Ludington and The Golf Club at Yarrow in 2003. It’s hard to pigeon-hole Hearn to just one style, but he’s shown a penchant for huge greens and playability. Hearn will tell anybody who listens that the Grande, with its rugged bunkering, should be ranked among the top five courses in the state. “The bunkers were wild. They had the elements of (architects A.W.) Tillinghast and (Alister) MacKenzie,” he said. His firm is healthier than ever, with projects in France, Connecticut, New York, and two in Egypt. “Despite the glooms and dooms (of the golf industry), we’ve had a phenomenal year, far better than I expected,” Hearn said.

Jeff Gorney

We build a lot of golf holes that people have fun playing and don’t cost a lot.

Jeff Gorney might be the one guy on this list you don’t recognize. The 60-year-old Comstock, Mich., resident has quietly gone about his business designing quality public courses. Gorney opened his design business in 1988 after more than 15 years working in the maintenance side of the industry. His first project was a nine-hole addition at Meceola Country Club in Big Rapids. After his Fox Run Country Club opened in Grayling in 1990, Gorney hit the jackpot with the Little Traverse Bay Golf Club in Harbor Springs in 1991. It was a dream site with views of Lake Michigan, hardwood forests and heaving terrain. Gorney was one of a handful of Michigan architects to lead the charge in the go-go 1990s. He handcrafted the linksy Heathlands in Onekama in 1996. The Dream in West Branch in 1997 led to a second project working with the Courtemache family, the addition of the 18-hole sister course, The Nightmare, several years ago. Gorney’s legacy, though, will be his family-friendly, affordable efforts at Scott Lake, where he built a nine-hole addition in 1998; the Colonial in Hart; and Hessel Ridge in the Upper Peninsula. All three made our list of “25 Courses for $25 or less,” published in 2004. “We build a lot of golf holes that people have fun playing and don’t cost a lot,” Gorney said. “I don’t get a top 10 (ranking) in the golf magazines, but that don’t matter. Little Traverse Bay is the closest thing I’ve had that was so dynamic. The Dream, The Nightmare, those are some awesome courses. I didn’t get involved for that (recognition). I just try to help the owners out.” Gorney said he does some design consulting out of state, but true to his nature he declined to discuss how he stays busy. “I try to keep it (my life) low key,” he said.

• Robert Trent Jones: The Heather course at Boyne Highlands Resort, constructed in 1965, still charms golfers with its rolling hills and thrilling 18th hole. His Masterpiece course at Treetops Resort in Gaylord is considered his last hands-on design before his death. His celebrated sons, Robert Trent Jones Jr. (The Orchards in Washington Township) and Rees Jones (Black Lake in Onaway and Thousand Oaks in Grand Rapids), also have must-plays in Michigan. • Jack Nicklaus: The Golden Bear consulted at Bay Valley Resort in Bay City with Desmond Muirhead in 1972, but it’s his namesake, The Bear at Grand Traverse Resort in Acme, opened in 1984, that defines championship golf in northern Michigan. • Arnold Palmer: The King’s design company has crafted five good tracks: The King’s Challenge in Cedar, The Ravines in Saugatuck, Coyote Preserve in Fenton, The Legend at Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire and Northville Hills. • Gary Player: The globetrotting South African gave us The Wolverine at Grand Traverse Resort and also Eagle Crest, Eastern Michigan University’s scenic playground along Ford Lake in Ypsilanti. • Tom Fazio: Fazio’s sculpted fairways and tricky green complexes can only be found at Treetops Resort in Gaylord. • Tom Weiskopf: This former British Open champion built thoughtful, strategic designs with his Cedar River course at Shanty Creek in Bellaire and Forest Dunes in Roscommon. • Jim Engh: The Colorado-based Engh, named one of the 25 hot architects by Golf World Magazine, struck gold with Tullymore in Stanwood and True North in Harbor Springs.

See, we’ve been #1 (Golf Digest® 2003 Best New Upscale Course in America) and we’ve been #2 (Michigan Golf Magazine® top 50 Public Golf Courses) but the #34 is pretty special since it wasjust last year that we started offering our Members and Guests the opportunity to make Forest Dunes their home.

CLUBHOUSE

Why does Forest Dunes continue to be on everyone’s short list of must play places…well, let’s start with the golf course itself. It would be easy to say that Tom Weiskopf designed it, much like Picasso painted it and leave it at that, but it goes much deeper than great design. With conditioning that rivals any course in America, Forest Dunes treats its’ Members and Guests to lightning fast greens, expertly manicured fairways and an attention to detail matched by few, if any.

Our exceptional golf course is then complimented by our exceptional clubhouse. This grand, 15,000 square foot clubhouse was inspired by the architecture of nineteenth century Adirondack lodges. With several dining rooms, well appointed locker rooms and a world-class golf shop the clubhouse experience is seamlessly matched to the golf course.

So now is the time to experience Forest Dunes. With our Membership filling steadily, we are limiting public access to the golf course. We would encourage you to explore our Membership options…or even make Forest Dunes your home, not just home course. And we promise, we won’t treat you like a number (#34, #1, #2, #16, etc)!

Whether you’re looking to stay a long weekend or a lifetime, the Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort in Augusta can offer both and more! For almost a half century, the Scott family has brought quality golf and resort life to southwest Michigan. Today, teeing it up at any of the five championship courses at the resort offers the best combination of variety, playability, value and convenient travel time by car or air of any property in the state. It’s one of the best kept secrets in Michigan Golf! Gull Lake View offers incredible golf packages starting at only $93.00. Packages in the Fairway Villas adjacent to the East and West courses include unlimited green fees on all five courses without additional surcharges. First-class amenities seem to contradict the affordable prices. Dining in three separate clubhouses, two practice facilities, nine practice greens and spacious villas within walking distance of two courses is why Gull Lake View continues to be a leader in the Michigan resort industry. All five courses are rated between 4 and 4.5 stars by Golf Digest and are certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries. Darl Scott brought golf to Gull Lake in 1963, building the West Course. Darl and his sons, Charles and Jim Scott, added the East course in 1973.

The Championship layout at Stonehedge South was built in 1988, with its grassy, windblown holes, forested terrain, elevation changes and large greens. Stonehedge North, the newest of the Gull Lake courses, was designed in 1995 by Charles and Jon Scott with the distinct mix of six par 3’s, six par 4’s and six par 5’s. Bedford Valley, a Battle Creek course purchased in 1988 was designed by William Mitchell and remains one of Michigan’s most tested championship venues. Known locally as “The Big Course” for its huge greens, large bunkers and fairways lined with mighty oaks, Bedford Valley has hosted the Michigan Open, the Michigan Senior Open, the Michigan Maxfli PGA Junior Championship, the Michigan Publinx State Match Play and the NCAA Division III National Championship. The Scotts are now taking reservations for their second development. Located on the West Course, Cranes Pond is a private 250-acre, gated open-space community surrounding a 54-acre glacial pond. Golf architect Jim Engh is two-for-two when it comes to great courses in Michigan. After designing Tullymore Golf Club in Stanwood in 2001, Engh, based in Colorado, returned to Michigan for another home-run project. Engh’s True North Golf Club continues the tradition of great courses near Harbor Springs surrounding Little Traverse Bay, with the neighboring Bay Harbor Golf Club and The Heather at Boyne Highlands. Engh carved the 7,017-yard course from the northern woods with a sensitivity to the rolling natural terrain. He eschewed traditional design rules to find the best holes. The course begins and ends with a stout par 5 of more than 549 yards. The par-3 10th hole requires a 209-yard carefully crafted shot to the green. Engh’s creative style has resulted in a trio of honors from Golf Digest and he was the magazine’s 2003 architect of the year. “True North is a complete change from Tullymore,” Engh said, “from wetlands at Tullymore to rolling terrain and valleys at True North. The land here is of exceptional quality and the topography and sandy soils are reminiscent of the sites where golf was first played. Add to that the dense Michigan forest and we had the

PHONE: (800) TRUENORTH

opportunity to create something spectacular.” Engh always adds “sprinkles” of Ireland to his designs, honoring the traditions of the Emerald Isle’s greatest coastline layouts. True North’s unique bunkering and his use of wild native grass along the rough and between holes honors Ireland’s links courses that have stood the test of time. At True North, water comes into play on five approach shots, most notably the large lake on the 442-yard par-4 ninth. Four holes have a natural elevation drop of 60 to 100 feet. Seventy-two home sites surround the course on the 320 acres, but never will intrude on its character. The course is the first in Michigan to become a member of Audubon International’s prestigious Silver Signature program. The Silver Signature designation recognizes a club’s commitment to environmental planning and resource management. General Manager David Mocini has been overseeing operations since the club was founded. Although a private facility, the club offers limited public play, so call the course in advance for that day’s schedule. Take advantage of playing one of Michigan’s latest golf gems now before it goes entirely private. It’s a course you won’t want to miss.

Golfers often experience euphoria when visiting Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club for the first time. There might not be a more scenic spot in Michigan, where windswept dunes collide with the ice-blue waters of Lake Michigan. It’s pure bliss. Just don’t forget your camera. “It’s the best view in the world,” Arcadia Bluffs general manager William Shriver said. “I don’t care where you go. I challenge you to find a better setting than dusk on the porch and the sun going down. When the sailboats are out and the clouds and sun are pink, it is just breathtaking. It’s so peaceful. People come from all over the world just to see it.” The coastal views, the dunes, the 50 sod-walled bunkers, the classic wood rakes and flagsticks: They all lead players to believe they’re teeing it up in Scotland or Ireland, not Michigan. Arcadia Bluffs has earned a 5-star rating, recognizing “Golf at its absolute best,” by Golf Digest. Golf Digest rates the layout at no. 10 on its listing of 100 greatest public courses in the U.S. Arcadia Bluffs’ commitment to a unique playing experience is evident in its amenities. The course has instituted a caddie program, one of the few public

courses in the Midwest to have one. If you’re not up to walking, the carts are fitted with one of the best Global Positioning System yardage computers. While the view may captivate you, the 7,300-yard course demands your full attention. Designers Rick Smith and Warren Henderson crafted wide fairways, but danger lies in tough greens and dangerous bunkers. Some of the more than 120 bunkers are sod-walled bunkers. Long fescue grasses are scenic, flapping in the wind, but also penal. “The golf course’s defense is 50 yards and in,” Shriver said. No. 10, a 481-yard par-4, and No. 11, a 633-yard monster par-5, might be the two best back-to-back holes in the state, displaying the course’s beautiful natural dunes, which tower over either side of the fairway. Once the golf is over, linger longer at the Nantucketstyle clubhouse perched on the apex of the 245-acre property. The best part of your day might be eating dinner at The Sunset Grille or inside the pro shop, where golfers soak up the expansive views of Lake Michigan. “The secret or the mystique of Arcadia Bluffs is it all looks so natural,” Shriver said. “When you look at it, it looks like it has been here forever. The land and the property lent itself to looking like a great links course.”

Don’t let distance separate you from one of Michigan’s best golf courses. TimberStone at Pine Mountain Resort, the 2004 Michigan Golf Course Owner’s Association Course of The Year, is one of a handful of Michigan layouts that has earned a 5-star rating from Golf Digest readers. Susie Fox and her staff in Iron Mountain continue to wow all who make the journey to Iron Mountain. As of August, 2006, the resort and the course are under the same ownership, making the synergy between the two better than ever. Architect Jerry Matthews has designed more than 70 courses in Michigan, and this is perhaps his finest work. Matthews cut TimberStone from towering pines, majestic oaks, colorful birch and some of the largest stones you may ever see. They frame and enhance every fairway, every view. Local legends Tom Izzo (Michigan State University’s men’s basketball coach) and Steve Mariucci (former Detroit Lions football coach) hold their charity outings at TimberStone every year. Ascending the mountainside of Pine Mountain, the drama of the course builds until reaching a stunning panoramic view of both the Wolverine and the Badger states: 15 miles of unobstructed beauty, 310 feet above the first tee.

The “Sagola,” the famed 17th hole, derives its name from the old ski jumping days. This par 3 has seven waterfall tees and 110 feet of vertical drop to a twotiered green shaped like the nearby lake in the distance. TimberStone is located adjacent to the 120-meter world famous Pine Mountain Ski Jump. As the story goes, when skiers would come off the end of the jump, they would yell “Sagola,” referring to the small community they could see 15 miles to the north, fantasizing that their flight would carry them across the expanse. The resort provides rest for the ski- and golf-weary with 34 hotel rooms, two suites and 24 condominiums. With an indoor hot tub, pool and sauna and a restaurant and bar, guests never have to leave the resort. If you are not up to driving to Iron Mountain, Midwest Airlines (www.midwestairlines.com) flies right into the city from Flint, Grand Rapids and Muskegon, among other regional airports. The staff at TimberStone will arrange for transportation to and from the airport, only 2.5 miles away. If you do drive, plan a few extra days, because the Upper Peninsula has several other must-plays, the new Greywalls in Marquette and Bay Mills Casino & Resort in Brimley.

The critics have spoken. And they’ve affirmed what A-Ga-Ming Resort partners Mike Brown and Larry Lavely already knew: Their Sundance course is pretty special. Golf Digest announced in its December 2006 issue that The Sundance is on the Top 10 list of “Best New Public Courses To Play For Under $75,” ranking third behind only King Carter Golf Course in Irvington, Va., and Blue Heron Golf Course in Medina, Ohio. The Sundance, designed by noted Michigan architect Jerry Matthews and sculpted by shaper Steve St. James, has been drawing raves from players. Situated on a bluff, the 6,935-yard Sundance serves up stirring views of Torch Lake to the east and Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay to the west. Matthews said an old sand quarry on the grounds gave him the idea to use bunkering for the course’s visual flair. There are more than 120 traps strewn throughout the layout. The bunkers and grassy mounds help to guide players throughout wide open, gently rolling land that has a links-like feel at times. The Sundance, complemented by the resort’s orginal course, now called “The Torch,” is the cornerstone of the resort’s plans for growth.

Brown and Lavely, two Central Michigan University graduates who purchased A-Ga-Ming in 1996, continue to transform their dream property. St. James is working on changes to the Torch course, which plays much different than the Sundance. The 6,693-yard layout twists and turns through hardwood forests and offers the best views of Torch Lake from its finishing holes. A 60-room lodge is proposed to complement the Sundance’s new clubhouse, slated to open in 2007. Featuring commanding views of Torch Lake as well as both golf courses, the new clubhouse will have a fullservice restaurant, business conference facilities and a grand ballroom for weddings and larger functions. Current residential offerings feature the Lakeview Ridge development, a private gated enclave limited to 14 single-family home sites and cottages that will feature northern Michigan-inspired architecture. Golfers looking to tee it up in 2007 will enjoy the one-, two- and three-bedroom condominium rentals that are available, as well as Jacuzzi suites. Each unit features a full kitchen and bathroom and a balcony or porch. But you won’t be inside too long. Two fantastic courses will be beckoning.

Few courses introduced to the Michigan golfer the past 10 years equal the challenge and architectural beauty of Angels Crossing Golf Club in Vicksburg. Golf Digest ranked Angels Crossing the 6th “Best New Affordable” golf course for 2005. Angels Crossing is quickly running up the list of places to play throughout the Midwest. W. Bruce Matthews III designed the 27 holes at Angels Crossing, 18 of which are currently open for play, that pay homage to classic design qualities of golf’s Golden Age. The course is inspired by those constructed by architectural giants such as C.B. Macdonald, Seth Raynor and William Flynn along the eastern seaboard during the early 1900’s with one minor twist – the features are all laid to fit the demands of modern equipment. Strategically placed features abound and can be seen not only in the placement of the bold bunkering, but the many ridges and swales of the greens and fairways as well. With five sets of tee boxes, Angels Crossing provides every level of player with the opportunity to partake of many traditionally influenced design concepts such as the Redan, Biarritz, Eden, Long, Hogback and Capes. But you don’t have to be a student of architecture to enjoy the course, in fact, many come back telling tales of the massive undulating greens that may be some of the larg-

est in the state. The incredibly well-maintained L-93 bent grass greens average over 10,000 square feet in size, some are over 15,000 square feet, and are chock full of ridges, tiers and rolls that make them just plain fun. Many would expect greens that large to be protected by some pretty narrow fairways, but Angels Crossing has over 45 acres of tight bent grass fairways that present players maximum opportunity to take advantage of all their ground game options. Angels Crossing developers took a different approach to golf course living. Their approach is that folks would rather live at a great golf course rather than have an address on a good one. Only five of the 100+ residential opportunities, which include single family homes and condo living settings, border the current 18 holes and set well off the golf course. The genuinely hospitable staff at Angels Crossing is happy to take tee times six days in advance while maintaining a value-oriented price point under $50 for 18 holes with a complimentary cart and walkers are always welcome. It can be no wonder the course received an affordability based award from a national publication with those types of rates coupled with its design and conditioning.

The best courses don’t rest on their laurels. If courses are standing still and not moving forward with renovations and improvements, they’re getting passed by others that are. The 7,002-yard Thornapple Pointe Golf Club in Grand Rapids has become a premier facility because of the TLC of the ownership and the dedicated employees over the past four years. In 2003, the course received a major facelift, with new bunkers and upgraded greens throughout the 229 acres of wooded, rolling topography. In 2006, a permanent pavilion west of the clubhouse that seats up to 300 was erected. Also, new bunkers were added in 2006 on holes No. 7, No. 9 and No. 16. All these changes add up to golf dedicated to please every customer. The on-cart Global Positioning System gives pinpoint accuracy to the flagstick, giving another modern amenity that only a handful of courses in the state boast. The improvements of 2003 are noticed from the outset where three new bunkers guard the left side of the opening 453-yard first hole. The right side fairway bunker has been repositioned and the fairway contoured with a left-to-right bend to accommodate the styling of

ARCHITECT: William Newcombe YEAR OPENED: 1996 PHONE: (616) 554-4747 WEB SITE: www.thornapplepointe.com

the left-side bunkers. A directional bunker was placed on the left side of the fairway about 280 yards from the championship tee on the 433-yard third hole. A series of three bunkers now guard the right side. The most inspired re-creation from the 2003 redo is the par-4, 350-yard 18th hole, formerly the ninth hole. Two new fairway bunkers are tucked into the right dogleg and the other perfectly awaits 250-yard tee shots to the middle of the fairway. The par-5s might be the biggest marvel of Thornapple Pointe. The 633-yard fifth is defined by a towering oak on a bluff. A series of bunkers on the edge of the Thornapple River leads to the deep green. The seventh requires a 175-yard-plus carry over a deep ravine from the tips. The 551-yard 13th might be the signature hole, where tee locations are diverse, either from a bluff or over a river inlet. The fairway hugs the Thornapple River on the left and woods on the right. The 531-yard 16th ends with a hillside green perched above the river. Birdie any of these four challenging holes, and it will add just another great memory to an already grand round of golf.

Rees Jones is one of the best architects in the game today. When on a Rees Jones course, golfers know they’re in for a treat. Jones, the son of the wildly popular Robert Trent Jones Sr., and his reputation have grown so great, he’s now used by the United States Golf Association to renovate U.S. Open courses, earning him the nickname the “Open Doctor.” Thousand Oaks Golf Club in Grand Rapids, Jones’ 7,128-yard gem in West Michigan, continues to evolve into one of the state’s best courses. Jones didn’t have to work magic at Thousand Oaks. He just let the dramatic elevation changes and heavily wooded site of 430 acres guide his creative hand. An award-winning course was only natural on land blessed much like northern Michigan’s heaving terrain. Since its 1999 debut, the course has ranked No. 4 on the Best New Affordable Public Course by Golf Digest in 2001 and one of the Top 25 Courses in Michigan by Golf Digest in 2003. Grand Rapids Magazine readers rated it the best public course in a 2003, 2004 and 2005 readers poll. With large greens and several teeing options, holes can dramatically change via numerous pin positions,

changing the angle of attack into each green. Even if you miss a shot, the course is shaped to guide the ball back into the field of play. That allows for playability, even though there are challenges at every turn. Every detail seems oversized at Thousand Oaks. The fairways are large as runways. The greens as big as launching pads. And bunkers are as deep as craters. A stretch midway through the round – with three par5s in four holes – could make or break your score. The 530-yard ninth hole seems like a warm-up compared to the monstrous length of the 630-yard 10th. The new UpLink GPS system for the new Club Car Champions Edition golf carts, added in 2006, have taken the course’s amenities up a notch. The club’s restaurant receives rave reviews from patrons and critics alike. For those looking at links living, the Thousand Oaks home sites, located in Plainfield Township just north of downtown Grand Rapids, begin at $100,000 and are generous in size at almost an acre. The new condominium project, The Village at Thousand Oaks, is complete and ready to let you enjoy a slice of the finer life. Thousand Oaks is one of the many reasons Grand Rapids has become a golf destination worth visiting year after year.

Don’t judge Lake Doster Golf Club in Plainwell and Wallinwood Springs in Jenison by their yardages on the scorecard. These two Par 5 Inc.-owned golf courses epitomize the rare combination of playability for all golfers and a challenge for anybody brave enough to go to the tips. Lake Doster plays 6,540 yards from the back and Wallinwood stretches to 6,700 yards. Those aren’t long by modern standards, but both courses offer enough strategy to keep all players intrigued. Lake Doster, west of Plainwell off M-89, starts gently with a par-4 of 320 yards from an elevated tee. Take advantage because it gets interesting from there. The 392-yard second hole, the No. 1 handicap hole, is a sharp dogleg right over a gully and there is not a chance of cutting the corner. The undulating green is protected on the front and left side by sand. Next up is the course’s most famous challenge, a.k.a. “The Little Monster.” Rated one of the top 18 holes in Michigan by the Detroit News, Lake Doster uses this 100-yard par-3 as its signature hole and incorporated its shape into its logo. A newly rebuilt tee sits high above the treacherous green below, isolated by trees, surrounded on three sides by water and further protected by three deep sand traps.

LOCATION: Jenison, SW of Grand Rapids on I-196, less than 1 mile from the Chicago Drive exit ramp. ADDRESS: 8152 Weatherwax Drive, Jenison 49426 ARCHITECTS: Jerry Matthews/Ray Hearn YEAR OPENED: 1990 WEB: wallinwoodspringsgolf.com

A couple other great par 4s have nicknames, too – the 377-yard 7th is “Old Grandad” and the 411-yard 17th is “Bogey Gulch.” Doster has an elegant new clubhouse/restaurant/ banquet facility courtesy of a fire that ravaged the old building six years ago. Guests will find the facility very comforting, capable of handling large outings and groups numbering 250 people or more. Ray Hearn built nine holes at Wallinwood Springs in 1990 and the course added nine more in 1993. Last year, Wallinwood Springs rebuilt a number of bunkers with new sand and the course continues to improve. The back nine is littered with water. It features a 26acre, man-made lake that creates a watery grave for misguided shots on five holes. The Grand River borders the right side on holes No. 10-12. Two par 3s are picturesque, yet perilous. The 13th requires a 211-yard carry over the water. The 15th hole boasts an island green 188 yards from the back tee. Excellent food and great, friendly service await guests for each event at the club. Co-owner Tim Hartson invites you to visit both courses this season. You won’t be disappointed.

Treetops Resort in Gaylord is to Michigan what Michigan is to America – The Summer Golf Capital. Who could argue: four 18-hole championship golf courses penned by some of America’s great golf course architects – Tom Fazio and Robert Trent Jones Sr. Rick Smith is the resort’s managing partner. He’s an acclaimed architect in his own right (Treetops’ Tradition and Signature courses) but he may be best known as the swing coach to Phil Mickelson and creator of the Golf Channel’s “Big Break” reality show. Lest I forget, Treetops is also home to the no. 1 par -3 course in America, Threetops, host of the ESPN-televised ING Par 3 Shootout. Perhaps better than any other Michigan resort, Treetops has found its way into the national golfers’ conscience, ranking with the likes of Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, Kiawah Island and Whistling Straights for name recognition. PGA tour professionals in the 2007 premier issue of their “Guide to Travel” voted Treetops their top golf destination as a “Golf Guy Getaway.” Since Smith and his partners purchased the resort in 2003, Treetops has continued to invest in capital improvements. It has added a Starbucks Internet café,

a state-of-the-art game room with five high-definition televisions, and a new children’s adventure center. A new activities building features a golf simulator, billiards area and new card rooms for after-golf enjoyment. The golf school remains popular, too. The rooms have been upgraded with new carpeting, fixtures, tiles, bedding and furniture. Cable service in the Lodge rooms provides more than 300 TV channels and high-speed internet access. Treetops is the quintessential golf experience; recently renovated lodge, 238 total guest rooms, a full slate of sport and recreational activities including fly fishing, skiing in the winter months and a new spa that’s nothing short of world-class: sauna, hot tubs, hot stones, massages, manicures, pedicures and hair styling. Treetops is also tops in value. In-season rates for four rounds of golf at all four 18-hole courses, two nights lodging and meals is less than $500. Many other packages for less than half that are also available. Plan your trip now by visiting www.treetops.com. It’s the right time to visit the Double JJ Ranch & Golf Resort, the largest dude ranch in the Midwest. The brand new “Gold Rush” indoor waterpark and entertainment complex, unveiled in November, and the Thoroughbred Suites, on schedule to be completed in July, are the first phase in a series of projects in the overall $36 million expansion of the resort. “This is an exciting time for the Double JJ and, we like to believe, for Oceana and surrounding counties,” said owner Bob Lipsitz. “There’s no question West Michigan could use some positive job news. Our plans are long term, with many new jobs being created today and laying the groundwork for expansion.” The 6,900-yard Thoroughbred Golf Course, designed by Arthur Hills in 1993, can play as tough as you want it. From the tips, it offers one of the highest slope ratings in the state. From the forward tees, it is one of the top 100 women-friendly courses in America, according to Golf for Women. Families will soak up the smiles at the new 60,000square-foot mining-themed indoor waterpark. The attractions are diverse: an action river, two slide towers reaching 54 feet with four thrills slides, a wave pool, hot tubs, two children’s pools, a dumping mine cart and children’s play

structure with multiple slides, a sports-oriented pool with basketball, volleyball, balance challenges and a mine-shaft complete with tunnels and climbs. An Italian restaurant, retail shops, a deli, coffee shop and video arcade have already opened. The Frontier Center, located adjacent to the indoor Waterpark and Sundance Steakhouse, will open a sports bar and grill, night club, spa and fitness center, retail corridor, live theater and banquet center in 2007. The suites boast full kitchens, an indoor Jacuzzi, private balcony, fireplace and lower level parking. There are many unit types available with choices of one, two or three bedrooms with golf course or Waterpark views. Units range from 497 to 3,625 square feet. With a staff of 150 full-time employees and another 150 seasonal staff, the resort offers adventure-packed, Western-style getaways year-round, specializing in horseback riding, golf, snow tubing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and dog sledding. The indoor waterpark complements the outdoor waterpark at the Back Forty Ranch. It features a 145-foot waterslide, zero depth entry pool, activity pool and hot tub. Grand Hotel, one of the world’s finest hotels and, according to Travel & Leisure Family Magazine, one of the 10 best hotels in the U. S. for families, features one of Michigan’s most unique golf courses – The Jewel. Though not a long course, The Jewel offers unique and historic features – along with beautiful views – which turn a round of golf into a walk back in time. On The Jewel, a horse-and-carriage ride transports golfers from the Grand (front) nine, across the street from the hotel, to the Woods (back) nine, located in the interior of the island. “The best thing about The Jewel is the island tranquility and pace of play,” head professional Jason Horricks said. “And there’s no other course which includes such a novel way of going from one nine to the other.” “The scenery is second to none in Michigan, and the course is in excellent shape.” The Grand nine originally opened in 1911, and was redesigned in 1985 by architect Jerry Matthews. The Woods nine, also designed by Matthews, opened in 1994. “The Jewel was one of my favorite projects,” Matthews said. “The hotel nine had real small greens, which we totally rebuilt to take out some of the difficult shots for

liability purposes.” “On the Woods nine, we created nine completely new holes,” Matthews added. “It offered a tremendous amount of natural beauty on very limited acreage. The challenge of working on Mackinac Island is that motorized equipment is prohibited,” added Matthews. “It was a unique and interesting assignment.” The Governor’s Mansion, Fort Mackinac and the island’s marina can all be viewed from the no. 7 tee on the Hotel nine. Every hole on the Woods nine offers spectacular views. It’s a challenge for scratch golfers and high handicappers alike. The Mackinac Bridge can be seen from the green at no. 10, while the par-3 12th is one of the prettiest holes anywhere with layered teeing areas, a cascading waterfall and a receptive peninsula green. The clubhouse near the Woods nine features a single lane 10-pin bowling alley, one of the oldest still operating in the United States. The rebirth of Shanty Creek Resort & Club in Bellaire is well underway. Guests and golfers can expect to be blown away in 2007 and beyond. The new owner, Trinidad Resort & Club LLC, a subsidiary of Apex Oil Co., is using its experience managing ski and golf resorts to make Shanty Creek a leader among Michigan’s resorts. Jack Eslick, the chief operating officer/general manager, leads the new management team recently put in place. “The opportunity to come to Northern Michigan and be a part of an exciting new chapter in the life of Shanty Creek Resort & Club was one that I did not want to pass up. Shanty Creek has an ambience and serenity that is unique to northern Michigan resort destinations,” Eslick said. “There is already a high level of excitement building about the resort’s new direction among our employees and our customers, with the support of new ownership changes and improvements that have already been made at the resort with more in store for the future.” Shanty Creek has always offered some of the best of northern Michigan. Three distinct villages play out over 4,500 acres of magnificent natural terrain just north of Traverse City. The lodging facilities at the Schuss, Cedar River and Summit Villages, reward guests with award-win-

ning dining, live entertainment and a full-service conference/banquet center. An extensive renovation is planned for the Summit Hotel. A fitness center, whirlpools, saunas and spa services add to the amenities. Skiers love the 49 downhill skiing slopes on two mountains and the more than 30 kilometers of cross country trails, snowboarding and tubing runs. The four golf courses all are distinctly different and challenging. Arnold Palmer helped put Michigan golf on the map by designing The Legend in the mid-1980s. Winding through beautiful hills and ridges while offering stunning views of Lake Bellaire, The Legend has been voted one of the top resort courses by Golf Magazine. Tom Weiskopf’s Cedar River Golf Club at Shanty Creek was his first design in Michigan and was immediately named to Golf Magazine’s “Top 10 You Can Play” list in 2000. Cedar River features wide landing areas, huge bunkers and large approachable greens. Schuss Mountain Golf Club is an old favorite and has been recognized by Golf for Women magazine’s “Top Fairways” list. St. Ives golf course debuted to rave reviews in 1997 and rocketed to a no. 5 ranking as America’s “Best New Affordable Public Course” by Golf Digest. Tullymore followed in 2002 as the No. 1 “Best New Upscale Public Golf Course” by Golf Digest. The similarities end there. These courses are very, very different. St. Ives makes great use of dramatic elevation changes, placing a premium on position off the tee on almost every hole. Tullymore meanwhile gives more room off the tee, challenging the golfer with a mixture of more undulating greens than St. Ives. Several fairways at Tullymore are sculpted to “kick” the ball back towards the fairway, a nice touch for the middle to high handicapper. Tullymore allows the player a new approach to each hole each time out. And the same can be said for St. Ives, but perhaps it’s more pronounced, noting the elevation changes. This course can take on a noticeably different appearance from one day to the next. “I’d put Tullymore right up there with the other courses I have done”, says Jim Engh, the 2003 Golf Course Architect of the Year. What he and Jerry Matthews accomplished with Tullymore and St. Ives, respectively, are courses that are playable at any level, challenging

to the scratch player, but not punishing to the average player. What we liked the best at Tullymore is the great finishing 18th. A 5-par that can be reached in two with an “educated” draw for you right-handers around the large trees guarding the green. A super hole to finish the day. With the edition of the new course, plans were put into motion for a place for guests to stay, and The Inn at St. Ives was born. Located at the St. Ives course, this 44 room inn offers it all. Corporate meeting space, an indoor pool, fitness room, massage therapy, and all the amenities of the world class resorts. What you will notice most, though, is the service. Director of Golf Kevin O’Brien and his staff have mastered this most important aspect of being successful. From on-course marshals and their forecaddie duties to the friendly service from the outside staff to the pleasant shop staff, St. Ives realizes the player comes first. With awards coming from everywhere, St. Ives Resort will keep reaching higher and higher; maybe we will even see more golf in the future in the little town of Stanwood. Golf Digest has said, “They are the elite, the ultimate experience, and the very best golf that our part of the world has to offer.” Make your tee time.

Several hundred acres of the flat farmlands outside Lansing are now fabulous fairways, thanks to the vision and foresight of Darryl Kesler. Kessler owns the burgeoning golf complex in Bath that includes the 27-hole Hawk Hollow and 2006 Michigan Golf Course Owners Association Course of the Year – Eagle Eye Golf Club. Not to mention an executive course, the Falcon. Hawk Hollow, a Jerry Matthews design, has always been well-respected as a golf playground, but when Eagle Eye opened in 2003, it stole the headlines. The 7,318-yard Eagle Eye had all the tools to be a star. Its clubhouse is mammoth and can hold large banquets and weddings. There’s a true signature hole that players rave about – the island green at No. 17, a legitimate replica to the famous 17th at the TPC at Sawgrass. Top-notch course conditioning and quality service add to the experience. Rookie architect Chris Lutzke’s name is on the design at Eagle Eye, but his mentor, the legendary Pete Dye, should get a lot of the credit, too. The course, carved from an old potato farm and bog, is visually striking and strategically demanding; two of Dye’s trademarks. “He did a hell of a lot better than I ever thought he

would,” Dye said of Lutzke at the 2004 grand opening event. “This course would be good in any area, not just this one. You look at this and you’ve got a winner.” On comparing Eagle Eye to his designs, Dye added: “Some of mine are pretty bad. This one is good. It’s got a lot of ambience. It has a great look. This course is good enough for a major championship.” The tees are balanced and fair, from the blacks (6,908 yards) to the blues (6,444) and the whites (5,928). Thirteen holes feature water, adding up to 41 acres of liquid trouble. Mounds shrouded with thick, wispy grasses gobble up shots that are way off line, but wide fairways offer playability. Frog-haired bunkers give it an added touch. The dueling par-5s, at No. 9 and No. 18, hug a huge pound, each bending slightly in the opposite direction. They’re a perfect ending to a magnificent test of golf. “The project has turned out amazing,” said Lutzke, who worked for Dye for 18 years before Dye recommended he get a degree in landscape architecture at Michigan State University. “I worked late every night, but it has been worth it.” Golfers who visit Eagle Eye or Hawk Hollow would say the same thing.

Looking for a great one-day getaway without the long drive up north? Look to Mount Pleasant, home of the Soaring Eagle Casino and Bucks Run Golf Club. Neither are a gamble for top-notch entertainment. Bucks Run might be the most underrated course in the state when it comes to spectacular lakeside scenery and affordable luxury golf. The centerpiece of the 260-acre layout is the 34-acre Fisher Lake, which is surrounded by two holes on the front nine and three on the back nine, and fronted by a massive 18,000-square-foot, lodge-style clubhouse with space for banquets, weddings, conferences and outings. Before your round, take advantage of practice time on the 5-acre grass range, with a choice of two large putting greens. The course features miles of the Chippewa River coming into play on seven holes. Bucks Run is well-respected for taking care of the little things, with kudos for proper pace of play, course conditions and the ever-important customer service. A redesign by Matthews of the back nine has added more personality. The 416-yard 15th, once an uphill par 4, is now a 516-yard par-5. The change has created a riskreward scenario for long hitters to go for it in two or lay

up to a narrow approach zone. The 475-yard, par-5 16th used to be reachable in two. Now, as a 384-yard par-4, the tee shot is critical with a landing area only 100 feet wide, with a pond on the right and wetland left. The tee shot at No. 17 requires a blast over the Chippewa River to a wavy putting surface. The par-4 18th demands a difficult carry over Fisher Lake to the fairway and then a long, exacting approach. Players can finish their round, and settle bets, at the 18-hole putting course, located on an island between the clubhouse and third green. The putting course takes up over 2 acres and can be played by anyone with a putter and a ball. The nines are separated by a babbling rock creek and the holes are designed to match the championship course, complete with mounds, sand bunkers and fescues. If you decide you don’t ever want to leave, check into the real estate developments: 15 lots on the north side of the course, with some overlooking the layout and Chippewa River and 20-acre lots on the main road, with a dozen overlooking No. 18 and Fisher Lake. Acre lots start at $60,000. Bucks Run – your club for a day or a lifetime.

Unless your 2007 golf plans include any of the nine world-class golf courses at Boyne Highlands, Boyne Mountain, or Bay Harbor, you’re not experiencing the best Michigan golf has to offer. With three distinct properties – all offering first-class golf and accommodations, not to mention high-caliber restaurants and amenities – Boyne USA has positioned itself among the nation’s elite golf retreats. It all began nearly six decades ago, when Boyne founder Everett Kircher created a ski enclave at Boyne Mountain in Boyne Falls in 1948. Today, Boyne Mountain is a four-season destination. Perched at the base of Michigan’s largest mountain, Boyne Mountain offers skiing in winter, the Monument and Alpine courses for golf in summer and for any season, the new Solace Spa and the amazing Avalanche Bay, an 88,000-square-foot indoor water park that stays a balmy 84 degrees year-round. The new Mountain Grand Lodge, a magnificent 220room Austrian-Swiss-themed lodge opened in 2005, continues to wow first-time visitors. Boyne Highlands Resort, once Boyne’s flagship property located in Harbor Springs, is also in the midst of a major facelift. The charming rooms are being redone. The Heather, the course that brought golf to Northern

Michigan in 1965, looked spectacular for its 40th anniversary at the Michigan Amateur in June. A bunker renovation has revived this gem by Robert Trent Jones Sr. The property’s other three courses are just as distinguished. The Moor is a playable, fun Bill Newcombe design that intermingles with The Heather. The Memorial, another Newcombe layout, pays tribute to the best holes of legendary architect Donald Ross. The Arthur Hills course, Boyne’s newest attraction from 2001, offers all the traits of modern design, such as massive bunkers and wide fairways. Across the Little Traverse Bay in Petoskey, the 27-hole Bay Harbor Golf Club and the Inn at Bay Harbor exude luxury. The views from the course and the 134-room resort, a Renaissance Golf Resort by Marriott, look more like the Pacific Ocean than a sliver of the Great Lakes. Bay Harbor might be Hills’ best work. He worked closely with Stephen Kircher, Everett’s son, to craft three distinct nines -- a lakeside nine, a quarry nine and a wooded, traditional nine. Crooked Tree, a Harry Bowers design across the street, completes a 162-hole empire that continues to grow and prosper. Super Five Golf Weeks start at $882 including lodging and lessons. Golf packages start at $129 per person.

Think of Pilgrim’s Run Golf Club in Pierson. What’s the first thing that comes to mind? The incredible value. The scenery. The amazing story of how six employees helped to design the course. There’s something new to consider … this 7,093-yard course is a top flight challenge that can test even the best of players. The club, named one of the “Top 100 You Can Play” by Golf Magazine, will host a United States Open qualifier this summer. It will be interesting to see if those top players can flirt with the course record of 65, set by two-time former U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen in 2001. The opus of Pilgrim’s Run began innocently enough. Then-superintendent Kris Shumaker created the routing of the golf course. Six employees of the founder’s company designed three holes each within the guidelines provided. Architect Mike DeVries designed the green complexes and did some consulting. The front nine opened in July 1997, with the back nine coming to fruition a year later in July 1998. The final result: a symphony of golf holes working in harmony with nature on 400 acres of mixed hardwoods, pines and wetlands in west Michigan. DeVries is now

a household name among designers for his work at the Kingsley Club near Traverse City and Greywalls in Marquette. The same can be said of Pilgrim’s Run – it’s a recognizable name among a crowded Michigan golf scene. It has helped put the Grand Rapids area on the map when it comes to great golf. The clubhouse, built with cedar shake siding combined with the natural beauty of cut stone, opened in the spring of 1999, completing what is a full-service golf retreat. Shot values and playability work together throughout the course. Four major wetland/water hazards come into play. The second hole introduces the most challenging aspect of Pilgrim’s Run – the greens, which are undulating with tricky pin placements that require an accurate approach. No. 18 provides classic risk-reward golf that could make or break a trip to the U.S. Open for aspiring pros. The hole leaves plenty of room to the left of a lake to hit a safe, sensible shot, but for those who have been playing a sound game or just can’t help themselves, the center of the green awaits 280 yards from the blue tee. It’s all downhill and all over water.

The course rewards the golfer who uses brains over brawn. The Chief leads up to a spectacular finish with the 18th hole overlooking Lake Bellaire and yet another beautiful northern Michigan sunset. Both The Chief and Hawk’s Eye were designed by John Robinson, named one of the top 50 golf course architects in the world and who recently teamed with John Daley to design courses in North America. Hawk’s Eye Golf Resort is excited to announce its newest addition, Firestick, championship par-3 golf course scheduled to open for the 2008 season. Hawk’s Eye Golf Resort has not only world class golf but also world class accommodations. Whether it is a deluxe hotel room, the spacious Chief Golf Cottages or the all new Hawk’s Eye Clubhouse Condominiums, the guest will enjoy lodging that exceeds all expectations. Big Fore

The “Big Fore” isn’t Tiger, Ernie, Phil and Vijay. It is northern Michigan’s premier golf package. What makes it “BIG” is that the four courses are among the best in Michigan. Hidden River Golf & Casting Club in Brutus, Black Lake Golf Club in Onaway, Little Traverse Bay Golf Club in Harbor Springs and Dunmaglas Golf Club in Charlevoix are all among Michigan’s best public golf courses. Trout Creek Condominium Resort or Hamlet Village Resort Condominiums provides you with first-class accommodations for your stay. With only one phone call, all your golf, lodging and dining arrangements can be made the way you wish before you arrive. Both resorts are located near Nub’s Knob ski resort in Harbor Springs and feature deluxe condominium-style lodging with indoor and outdoor pools and tennis courts. Both are minutes away from the Harbor Springs Airport and the marinas at Petoskey and Harbor Springs. This package, in its sixth year, delivers some fantastic golf. “This is the most complete golf package in northern Michigan,” says Darin Philport, partner/vice president of operations at Hidden River and co-founder of the package with Hidden River owner Roger Wilson. “The great thing about the package is that it offers superior conditions and service, yet we are still very competitive with our pricing due to the cooperation of the Big Fore partners.” Bruce Matthews III designed Hidden River on land dissected by the scenic Maple River. The course and clubhouse offer beauty at every turn, featuring top conditions and a fine restaurant, The Rainbow Room. Hidden River also offers world-class fly-fishing and Michigan’s only golf/flyfishing combination academy. Black Lake Golf Club is the award-winning design by the Rees Jones, who is most known for his restoration work on U.S. Open courses like Congressional CC and Bethpage Black. He utilized every feature found on the property from cranberry

bogs to a small sand quarry to produce what may be his most charming design yet. Black Lake continues to be rated among the best courses in the U.S. by publications like Golf Digest, Golf Magazine and Golf for Women. All have listed Black Lake in their current ratings for the Top 100 public golf courses, and women-friendly courses respectively. The course is open for all to enjoy and is a golfing experience you will not forget. Perched on a high bluff, Little Traverse Bay Golf Club offers breathtaking views of Lake Michigan, Little Traverse Bay and three other inland lakes. The 6,895-yard parkland course is cut out of the bluff and meanders through hardwoods and pines. Many elevated tees and downhill holes add to a player’s enjoyment and confidence. A day of golf is accented by an evening of fine dining at the Little Traverse Bay Restaurant. With a 30-mile view of “the Bay and the Lake” as backdrop, this dining room affords guests an unforgettable culinary experience. The links-style Dunmaglas Golf Club is new to the Big Fore. Golfers enjoy spectacular views of Little Traverse Bay and Lake Charlevoix throughout their round. Rolling terrain and small greens make accuracy a premium. Tall fescue grass and pot bunkers add to its links-like charm. Several tee boxes enable all golfers to enjoy this Scottish-style masterpiece. What are you waiting Fore? This package offers four distinctly different championship golf courses with first-class accommodations in beautiful Harbor Springs. Let the Big Fore be your premier golf vacation. MG: How did you get your start in golf design? ing them. I got a lot of great advice from people. I got to see a lot of the great courses in the world.” MG: As brief as you can, what’s your design philosophy? TD: “My design philosophy is to not make the design harder than it has to be. If you have a good site, the holes are there.” MG: Who do you credit with being your biggest mentor/mentors? TD: “I’ve had a bunch. But I wouldn’t be in the business, or I wouldn’t do it the way I do it if not for working with Pete Dye for several years. He taught me the basic philosophy of design and construction. They are inseparable. I’ve had other people I learned about design from more, but being able to do what I do, I owe most of it to Pete.”

MG: Talk about your early days trying to get into the business. TD: “I had a lot of help. When I was writing letters in the 1980s, it wasn’t the high profile business as it is these days. The architects I was writing were happy that someone was interested and contact-

MG: Your course, Pacific Dunes in Oregon, launched you to another level when it comes to critical acclaim? How has that changed your life? TD: “It really seems to have done so more than I thought it would. Half of what it turned out to be better than other courses is because it’s such a dramatic site. I didn’t think one great success would lead to so many other cool projects. It made

us the guys to talk to if you’ve got great ocean sites. I’ve gotten two so far and more are in the planning.” MG: Tell us about the dramatic elements of the New Zealand course, Cape Kidnappers, which has also gotten a ton of praise. TD: “It’s a bit different setting than Pacific Dunes. Instead of 100 feet above the ocean, you are 400 to 500 feet above on a cliff. Instead of seeing waves out in bay, they are just like ripples on the pond. New Zealand is beautiful and we were thrilled to work there.” MG: Are there any other sites like Pacific Dunes left out there to be discovered? TD: “Certainly there are. The question is are they in places where you are allowed to build a course and is it economically viable for a course. I am sure there are sites in Africa and South America, but can you get enough traffic for them to work is debatable. … The other part is a great site for golf doesn’t require an ocean view. There are a lot of great sites for golf left in America.” MG: You recently got to work with Jack Nicklaus at Sebonack Golf Club, a celebrated project in New York? How well

did that go? TD: “Judging from the finished project, it went well. It was interesting for both of us. We are both used to making final decisions. We knew taking the job we would have to find common ground because we didn’t always like what the other liked. … It is a difficult course from the back tees. Jack’s input helped out a lot on that. And it’s fun to play from the members tees and I helped out with that.” MG: What did you take from Jack’s style that you might use someday? TD: “For me, it was a chance to see how the other half lived. He is amazingly busy. He was so focused when he was onsite. At the same token, I don’t know that I would ever want to get that busy. It didn’t look fun. He was going from one project to the next to the next. I like to take time for decisions. He said if this were golf, we would get a two-stroke penalty for slow play in the business. I like to

sleep on my decisions, to take longer and maybe come up with something new.” MG: How much do you enjoy working on the classics? I know you got to do some work at Pasatiempo Golf Club out in California? TD: “We are consultants on 20 or 25 courses around the country, like San Francisco Golf Club and Chicago Golf Club. It’s a privilege to be out there to help them out. It’s been a great experience for the guys who work with me. We’ve got to hang out there, rebuild bunkers and features and see how great they were built. It is not as fun as building new courses. On that (type of) course, you either do a good job preserving it or you mess it up. It is not as creative a process, but I look at it as a responsibility to take care of the great old stuff.”

High Pointe Golf Club

MG: What’s your take on the technology debate? Will designing longer golf courses become the norm? TD: “Honestly, a lot of designers are overreacting. Technology has made great players much longer, but does anybody have a better handicap than three years ago? No. There is a little too much attention paid to that.”

MG: What do you remember most about creating Black Forest, one of your two northern Michigan designs? TD: “All 18 holes are surrounded by trees. I had to do a lot of bunkers to make the holes distinct from one another. I thought about the old Alister MacKenzie or George Thomas style of bold bunkers. It was not done much in the 1980s.” MG: What other things are you working on now? TD: “We’ve had two projects this year. We will open one in Scotland (in 2007). We’ve got a resort project in Mexico north of Cabo San Lucas, and a private club in Bend, Oregon. We are just breaking ground and another project in northern California. The fourth course at Bandon Dunes is a couple of years away.” MG: There’s been some talk about you working again with High Pointe, your first course in Michigan? TD: “I’m not sure on the status of that. It’s right across town. I would love to help them, however, they need the help.”
