Some Trimming at the Tops When the two news stories broke in April within days of each other that Phil Mickelson was leaving Rick Smith, and the Par-3 Shootout at Treetops Resort was cancelled in 2007, more than a few eyebrows raised in suspicion. Were the events connected? When Mickelson left Smith for Butch Harmon, did he bail out of the Threetops showcase, forcing sponsors to back away? Not according to Treetops director of golf Kevin McKinley. “It was just bad timing,” he says of the announcements. McKinley maintains that the 2007 Par3 Shootout, in what would have been its eighth season, had several significant sponsors ready to host, but none of the companies could commit to long-term deals, which Treetops officials believe is essential to a successful future. “One year planning is so hard,”
McKinley says. “After last year, we decided, going forward, we want to solidify multiyear deals.” McKinley says he’s “pretty optimistic” that the event will return in 2008. That’s good news to golf fans who have witnessed tournaments in Michigan drop like flies. In this decade, Michigan has lost one LPGA tournament (the Oldsmobile Classic), two Champions Tour events (the Farmer’s Charity Classic and Ford Senior Players Championship), a Canadian Tour stop (the Bay Mills Open) and a Futures Tour event (the Bank of Ann Arbor Futures Golf Classic). Only the PGA Tour’s
Buick Open in Grand Blanc remains. The Par-3 Shootout has done wonders for northern Michigan and Gaylord in terms of exposure. The two-day ESPNtelevised event features an 18-hole skins game on the Threetops course between four pros. A large purse and a $1 million prize for a hole-in-one attracted Mickelson, Lee Trevino, Fred Couples and others. To commemorate the event on June 25-26, Treetops scheduled a $10,000 holein-one contest for golfers who aced the seventh hole, nicknamed “High Five.” Winners, if any, were not available to Michigan Golf at press time.

Crystal Clear The view at the summit of Buck Hill in Thompsonville is as clear today as the mission set in motion in 1957, although few would argue that the original investors envisioned this. A group of friends had put some money together, cleared some timber, moved a little earth, fashioned a tow rope to a truck engine and pulled would-be skiers to the top to take advantage of the abundant snow. Fifty years later Buck Hill, now known as Crystal Mountain, is a world-class golf and ski destination with 45 slopes, 9 lifts, 36 holes of championship golf, one of the best teaching professionals in the game, lodging for 1,600 residents and a one-acre outdoor water park. Chris Petritz is the daughter of George Petritz, one of the original founders of Crystal Mountain when it was purchased in 1960. She and her husband, Jim MacInnes, oversee operations and remain loyal to the company’s mission of being a family destination offering four seasons of fun and adventure. FORE Sure There isn’t just a new name, new slogan and new logo at Shanty Creek Resorts in Bellaire. There’s a whole new attitude at Shanty Creek Resorts, formerly called Shanty Creek Resort & Club. Gone is the uncertainty that the words bankruptcy and foreclosure bring. The new owners, Trinidad Resort & Club, LLC, a subsidiary of Apex Oil Co. that bought the resort at the 11th hour, are determined to bring the property back to its glory, when it was regularly considered one of the top golf resorts in the Midwest. They’ve already pumped millions of dollars into the resort’s infrastructure, updating its computer systems and buying new equipment. Property owners and guests are already enjoying the differences. The new maintenance equipment has done wonders for the conditioning of Shanty Creek’s four golf courses. The customer service that had disappeared during the past few years is better than ever. While you’re golfing, workers will clean the windshield of your car as a way of

saying “Thank you for the visit.” This fall, extensive renovations are planned for the Summit Conference Center, including the guest rooms and the public areas on the main floor of the lodge. Vice president of sales and marketing Jon Stultz says the lobby will open up to give guests what they want: more stunning views above Lake Bellaire. “We are all about making memories,” he said. Stultz has introduced “ridiculous” golf packages, some as low as $99 per person during shoulder seasons. Customers at the Novi Golf Show bought just six golf packages last year, he said, and more than 500 this year. Affordability is one of Shanty Creek’s mantras. “We want to be accessible to the masses,” Stultz added. There’s even a new level of cooperation between Shanty Creek and Vacation Properties Network, which owns the Hawk’s Eye and The Chief courses in Bellaire. Shanty Creek’s new slogan “now more than ever” signifies the potential growth of the resort. The new logo showcases the two mountains that offer 49 downhill slopes and the forests that bookend the sprawling 4,500acre property and its three distinct destinations: the Schuss, Cedar River and Summit Villages. The same geographical factors that make this state’s scenic coastal courses so compelling lend equal allure to Michigan’s flourishing, internationally acclaimed wineries.
In Michigan, there are two kinds of driving. Boasting more courses and resorts than any other state excluding California and Florida, the Wolverine state’s claim to world-class golf defines one. The other? “Culinary travel is a natural for Michigan,” says David Lorenz, spokesperson for Travel Michigan, the state’s tourism promotion office. “Our agricultural base is very diverse, we have a well-regarded and growing wine industry, we are surrounded by Great Lakes – we have all the ingredients for wonderful food and wine experiences.” The same geographical factors that make this state’s scenic coastal courses so compelling lend equal allure to Michigan’s flourishing, internationally acclaimed wineries. Most vineyards are within the Lower Peninsula; many tasting rooms collectively work to attract visitors through seasonal festivals, special packages, themed weekends, gourmet dinners and culinary classes. Even if you’re not a sip and swirl connoisseur, consider dividing drive time between challenging greens and flavorful reds – memorable vistas at regional wineries are often complemented by cuisine that may rival your other favorite courses. If you’re new to Michigan’s wine trails, start in the heart of Southwest Michigan’s fruit belt. Below, our suggested journey includes drives through some of the state’s most scenic shoreline counties and top-rated fairways. To learn more about Southeast Michigan wineries not noted here, visit www.pioneerwinetrail. com. Bon appetit.

hill left dogleg and precarious green, relax at The Clubhouse. This multi-level, renovated 1920s’ farmhouse delivers log home charm with lakeside, course and garden views from a large outdoor deck, O’Brien’s formal dining room or Joe Mack’s Sports Bar. Opened in 1996, Whittaker Woods is appreciated as much for its fine cuisine and lavish Sunday brunch as it is memorable golf. North up the coast in Benton Harbor, Lake Michigan Hills Golf Club lures passersby from I-196. Bold, rolling greens, deep woods, serene ponds and contoured fairways – made more challenging by prevailing Great Lake winds – are signature elements of this testy, well-groomed, 18-hole design. A product of Charles Maddox, this course demands shot accuracy from the tee. Nearby, enjoy tasteful offerings along the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail (www. miwinetrail.com), which extends north to Saugatuck from the state line and east from the coast past Paw Paw into Van Buren County. Cool, temperate lake breezes and sandy clay soil here combine to create an environment that nurtures

When Macatawa Legends Golf Club made its debut in 2005, the 18-hole, Raymond Hearn-designed course just off Hwy. 31 on Holland’s north side catered to a private golf community. This spring, Hawthorn Suites Golf Resorts, LLC began its transformation into a first-class destination resort, and public players are now welcome to test their skill against Macatawa’s winding, expansive fairways and non-compromising putting surfaces. The addition of a new main clubhouse is expected to be operational by mid-winter. Founded on a sandy, modestly undulating piece of property just 100 yards from Lake Michigan on Hwy. 31, Grand Haven Golf Club combines lake breezes, tree-lined fairways and impeccable conditioning for 18 visually stunning holes. Designed by renowned Michigan architect Bruce Mathews, this shoreline track exemplifies the Mathews’ family philosophy: Create natural and beautiful golf courses that fit the land and provide ample challenge for the better player while ensuring that the game is still fun for the mid- to highhandicapper. Cutters’ Ridge affords fewer leniencies: This modern Mathews design caters to shot makers, complete with abundant wetlands and swells of manicured terrain. Just north of Manistee west of Hwy. 31, native orchard fescue lends heather allure to The Heathlands. This inland, links-style championship course fashioned by architect Jeff Gorney and owners John Read Sr. and Jr. spreads 18 holes across bygone apple orchard, native hardwoods and wetlands in elevated, rolling hills; glimpses of Portage Lake in neighboring Onekama come courtesy of this course’s natural openness. Native sandy soils, bent-grass, bluegrass and undulating greens add to the course’s charm, although you may need to put manners aside to make some of these shots. The internationally acclaimed
Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club lies about five miles south of Arcadia on Hwy. 22 and pays tribute to Lake Michigan at each of its 18, world-class holes:Views of blue can be enjoyed at every turn on this dazzling bluff-top course, designed by architects Warren Henderson and Rick Smith. While mesmerizing scenery may be Arcadia’s claim to fame, the caliber of its invigorating, distinctive links-style track can’t be underscored enough:This course is characterized by wide, undulating fairways, fast, rolling greens and Irish allure – all augmented by prevailing northwest lake breezes that ultimately determine playability. Heavily forested highlands contribute to Mountain Ridge’s demanding track, although four tee boxes on each hole cater to varying abilities.

Arnold Palmer’s design philosophy – to create a fair test of golf – is epitomized at King’s Challenge Golf Club off Hwy. 22 in Cedar. Within the vicinity of Sleeping Bear Dunes, mountain ridges and hilly terrain allowed Palmer to create an aesthetically stunning, well-bunkered layout featuring tree-lined fairways, terraced tees, dramatic elevation changes and bentgrass. Liberal greens and lack of water hazards are balanced by threatening waste areas and a couple doglegs; just hit the right club off the tee. Boasting memorable views of Suttons and West Grand Traverse bays, The Leelanau Club at Bahle Farms west of Hwy. 22 in Suttons Bay offers 18 championship holes in perhaps the sweetest of scenic settings: Two fairways are situated within a working cherry orchard, while others require navigation of woodlands, rolling terrain and unforgiving bunkers. RAVINES GOLF CLUB
A TRULY UNIQUE GOLF ENCOUNTER APTLY APPLIES TO THE RAVINES GOLF CLUB IN SAUGATUCK. NOTHING RIVALS ITS DEMANDING ARNOLD PALMER design or natural landforms. Couple this with an expansive practice area, a charming clubhouse – Arnie’s Cottage – and award-winning food selections from the restaurant and you’ve experienced a day at the links unlike any other. The Ravines is a bon-a-fide Michigan Monster, measuring 7,132 yards from the tips with a slope of 142 and course rating 73.9. Shot placement is critical from the tee on virtually every hole. Typically you expect a reprieve on par 5 holes, but not at The Ravines. These are the holes that set this club apart from any on the west coast of Michigan. Collectively the par 5s average 558 yards in length, the longest being 623 yards from the championship tees and the closing hole being the shortest, measuring 490 yards. Hole No. 4 is the first of the Fab 5s. It’s a bold 590 yards long and requires a big drive to make the corner of the right dogleg that sits almost exactly halfway between the tee and the green. This is a great golf hole but not the equal of the 529-yard No. 9 par 5.
This gem requires a skillfully placed drive to avoid the trees to the right and the water hazard dead ahead. The best approach here is to play a couple of 200-yard shots from the tee and fairway leaving you a wedge into a green that’s neatly tucked behind a pond. Ravines Golf Club earns its lore on the backside where the namesake ravine resides. The gorge, if you will, is first witnessed at the par 3 12th hole. It measures 165 yards over the escarpment and you do not want to miss the green to the left. Not that there’s much room to the right, front or behind this green. But the ravine doesn’t really come into play until hole 14th, a par 5 to beat all challengers. A cathedral of pine trees lines both sides of the fairway of this 623-yard hole. But before you enjoy a walk in their early morning or late day shadows, you’ll need to blast a 250-yard shot from the tee to clear the 60-foot deep ravine. A fairway wood played to the right side of the fairway allows for a wonderful approach shot over a wetland to a fairly large green.
The homeward par 5 is a shot maker’s layout that is best played as a three-shot hole. The green is heavily guarded and only the most skillful players will attack this 490yard hole in two strokes.

EAGLE EYE/HAWK HOLLOW
SEVERAL HUNDRED ACRES OF FLAT FARMLANDS OUTSIDE LANSING ARE NOW FABULOUSS FAIRWAYS, THANKS TO THE VISION AND FORESIGHT of Darryl Kesler. Kessler owns the burgeoning golf complex in Bath that includes the 27-hole Hawk Hollow and 2006 Michigan Golf Course Owners Association Course of the Year – Eagle Eye Golf Club. Not to mention an executive course, the Falcon. Hawk Hollow, a Jerry Matthews

Its clubhouse is mammoth and can hold large banquets and weddings. There’s a true signature hole that players rave about – the island green at No. 17, a legitimate replica to the famous 17th at the TPC at Sawgrass. Top-notch course conditioning and quality service add to the experience. Rookie architect Chris Lutzke’s name is on the design at Eagle Eye, but his mentor, the legendary Pete Dye, should get a lot of the credit, too. The course, carved from an old potato farm and bog, is visually striking and strategically demanding; two of Dye’s trademarks. “He did a hell of a lot better than I ever thought he would,” Dye said of Lutzke at the 2004 grand opening event. “This course would be good in any area, not just this one. You look at this and you’ve got a winner.” On comparing Eagle Eye to his designs, Dye added: “Some of

This course is good enough for a major championship.” The tees are balanced and fair, from the blacks (6,908 yards) to the blues (6,444) and the whites (5,928). Thirteen holes feature water, adding up to 41 acres of liquid trouble. Mounds shrouded with thick, wispy grasses gobble up shots that are way off line, but wide fairways offer playability. Frog-haired bunkers give it an added touch. The dueling par-5s, at No. 9 and No. 18, hug a huge pound, each bending slightly in the opposite direction. They’re a perfect ending to a magnificent test of golf. “The project has turned out amazing,” said Lutzke, who worked for Dye for 18 years before Dye recommended he get a degree in landscape architecture at Michigan State University. “I worked late every night, but it has been worth it.” Golfers who visit Eagle Eye or Hawk Hollow would say the same thing.

The Double JJ Resort has many restaurants to tempt your taste buds: the Sundance Steakhouse is famous for their grilled ribs; the Spaghetti
Western serves Italian fare, including pastas, pizzas, stromboli and mouth-watering entrées; Shooters Saloon is a non-smoking bar and restaurant that caters to families; and don’t miss the Pony Expresso, serving Starbucks coffee. Even with the addition of the indoor waterpark, horseback riding is still a popular pastime at the resort. The equestrian department offers trail rides for all ability levels, including cattle drives where participants work together as a team to move a herd of cattle from pen to pasture. When you’re not at the indoor waterpark or on a horse, there’s still plenty to keep you occupied! Outdoor pools, hayrides, wild west stunt shows, archery, riflery and a petting farm are just a few of the daytime activities to keep you entertained. In the evenings, you can participate in karaoke, corral shows, children’s theatre, mechanical bull riding, and line dancing or attend the Friday night rodeo. And, if you think the fun ends with summer, think again! In the fall, Double JJ offers a Fall Festival and Haunted Attractions, as well as a live theatre
production of “The Rocky Horror Show.” In the wintertime, snow tubing, cross-country skiing, and dog sledding all complement the steamy attraction of the indoor waterpark. For more information, visit the resort Web site at www.doublejj. com. If you’re looking for fun – on the course, at the ranch, or in the water – the Double JJ Resort will deliver.

TREETOPS
IN THE HEART OF NORTHERN MICHIGAN, SITS ARGUABLY THE FINEST COLLECTION OF GOLF COURSES FOUND ANYWHERE. TREETOPS RESORT is the only golf complex in the world to boast golf courses designed by the formidable combination of Robert Trent Jones, Sr., Tom Fazio and Rick Smith. The late Harry Melling’s decision to bring Robert Trent Jones, Sr. to Gaylord to design the “Masterpiece” quickly proved to be a smart one when it debuted as the 2nd Best New Resort Course in 1987. Now in its 20th year,
the challenging “Masterpiece” is still turning heads as readers of “Great Lakes Golf” have ranked it the 3rd Best Course in the Midwest behind only Whistling Straits and Arcadia Bluffs another Rick Smith design. While Robert Trent Jones, Sr. built a course known for its difficulty, Tom Fazio came to Gaylord (at Rick Smith’s persistent urging) and created a userfriendly design. Fifteen years later, the Tom Fazio “Premier” is still among the nations best resort courses earning 4 stars and a ranking of 59th among Golfweek’s Top 100 Resort Courses. After attending the Masters, Rick Smith decided to try his hand at the design game. He was enamored by the Par 3 course at Augusta and told Harry Melling that a par 3 course is just what treetops needed. Melling’s reply…”Go build it”. The rest, as they say is history. “Threetops” has become one of the most recognized golf courses in the nation via ESPN’s popular Par 3 Shootout. The overwhelming success of “Threetops” gave Rick Smith the confidence to design an 18 hole regulation course. The “Signature”, opened in 1993 to critical acclaim much like the three previous designs. With 13 of 18

tees elevated, the vistas on this course are must-sees and have helped the “Signature” enter the Top 50 Courses For Women, ranked at #29 by Golf For Women Magazine. If you’re anywhere near Gaylord, you must play the “Signature”. The final course to grace the acreage at Treetops is quite possibly the best kept secret. If you’re a golf purist, you’ll love the Rick Smith “Tradition”. One of the only Northern Michigan resort courses suitable for walking, the “Tradition” features gentle slopes, short distances from green to tee and immaculate conditions. Wide landing areas and beautiful bunkering make this golf course the perfect venue to host an event that will feature a wide range of skill levels. If golf is not your game, Treetops also features 238 guest rooms, 23 downhill ski runs, Nordic skiing, an extreme tubing run, three restaurants, a 10,000 square foot convention center, salon and spa, tennis courts, award-winning child care center and much, much more. This is a multiseason resort that has something for everyone. If Treetops is not already on your travel itinerary, you’ll need to add it to your list.
TRUE NORTH
GOLF ARCHITECT JIM ENGH IS TWO-FOR-TWO WHEN IT COMES TO GREAT COURSES IN MICHIGAN. AFTER DESIGNING TULLYMORE GOLF CLUB IN Stanwood in 2001, Engh, based in Colorado, returned to Michigan for another home-run project. Engh’s True North Golf Club continues the tradition of great courses near Harbor Springs surrounding Little Traverse Bay, with the neighboring Bay Harbor Golf Club and The Heather at Boyne Highlands. Engh carved the 7,017-yard course from the northern woods with sensitivity to the rolling natural terrain. He eschewed traditional design rules to find the best holes. The course begins and ends with a stout par 5 of more than 549 yards. The par-3 10th hole requires a 209yard carefully crafted shot to the green. Engh’s creative style has resulted in a trio of honors from Golf Digest and he was the magazine’s 2003 architect of the year. “True North is a complete change from Tullymore,” Engh said, “from wetlands at Tullymore to rolling terrain and valleys at True North. The land here is of exceptional quality and the topography and sandy soils are reminiscent of the sites where golf was first played. Add to that, the
dense Michigan forest and we had the opportunity to create something spectacular.” Engh always adds “sprinkles” of Ireland to his designs, honoring the traditions of the Emerald Isle’s greatest coastline layouts. True North’s unique bunkering and his use of wild native grass along the rough and between holes honors Ireland’s links courses that have stood the test of time. At True North, water comes into play on five approach shots, most notably the large lake on the 442yard par-4 ninth. Four holes have a natural elevation drop of 60 to 100 feet. Seventy-two home sites surround the course on the 320 acres, but never will intrude on its character. The course is the first in Michigan to become a member of Audubon International’s prestigious Silver Signature program. The Silver Signature designation recognizes a club’s commitment to environmental planning and resource management. General Manager & PGA Director of Golf David Mocini has been overseeing operations since the club was
founded. Although a private facility, the club offers limited public play, so call the course in advance for that day’s schedule. Take advantage of playing one of Michigan’s latest golf gems now before it goes entirely private. It’s a course you won’t want to miss, and truly a North American Masterpiece. SHANTY CREEK
THE REBIRTH OF SHANTY CREEK RESORTS IN BELLAIRE IS WELL UNDER WAY. GUESTS AND GOLFERS CAN EXPECT TO BE BLOWN AWAY IN 2008 and beyond with over $10 million in renovations planned at Summit Village. Renovations include entranceways, the main lobby, function space and guest rooms. A complete carpet and wall covering makeover will extend from the hallways to function rooms, and guestroom décor upgrades will convey the perfect balance of luxury and comfort. The new owners of Shanty Creek
Resorts, Trinidad Resort & Club, LLC, a subsidiary of Apex Oil Co., is using its experience managing ski and golf resorts to make Shanty Creek a leader among Michigan’s resorts. Jack Eslick, the chief operating officer/general manager, leads the new management team recently put in place. “The opportunity to come to Northern Michigan and be a part of an exciting new chapter in the life of Shanty Creek Resorts was one that I did not want to pass up. Shanty Creek has an ambience and serenity that is unique to northern Michigan resort destinations,” Eslick said. Shanty Creek has always offered some of the best of Northern Michigan. Three distinct villages play out over 4,500 acres of magnificent natural terrain just north of Traverse City. The lodging facilities at the Cedar River, Schuss and Summit Villages reward guests with award-winning dining, live entertainment and a full-service conference/banquet center. A fitness center, whirlpools, saunas and spa services add to the amenities. trails for cross country and snowshoeing enthusiasts. The four golf courses at Shanty Creek Resorts all are distinctly different and challenging. Arnold Palmer helped put Michigan golf on the map by designing The Legend in the mid-1980s. Winding through beautiful hills and ridges while offering stunning views of Lake Bellaire, The Legend has been voted one of the top resort courses in the country by Golf Magazine. Tom Weiskopf’s Cedar River Golf Club at Shanty Creek was his first design in Michigan and was immediately named to Golf Magazine’s “Top 10 You Can Play” list in 2000. It features wide landing areas, huge bunkers and large approachable greens. On the other side of the slopes from Cedar River, Schuss Mountain Golf Club is an old favorite and has been recognized by Golf for Women magazine’s “Top Fairways” list. If you like to walk, the Summit Golf Club features a classic parkland design with great views. Even if you’ve been to Shanty Creek Resorts before, don’t wait to visit. There’s a whole new resort waiting for you.
ANGELS CROSSING
FEW COURSES INTRODUCED TO THE MICHIGAN GOLFER THE PAST 10 YEARS EQUAL THE CHALLENGE AND ARCHITECTURAL BEAUTY OF ANGELS CROSSING Golf Club in Portage. Golf Digest ranked Angels Crossing the 6th “Best New Affordable” golf course for 2005. Angels Crossing is quickly running up the list of places to play throughout the Mid-West. W. Bruce Matthews, III designed the 27 holes at Angels Crossing, 18 of which are currently open for play, that pay homage to classic design qualities of golf’s Golden Age. The course is inspired by courses constructed by architectural giants such as C.B. Macdonald, Seth Raynor, and William Flynn along the eastern seaboard during the early 1900’s with one minor twist – the features are all laid to fit the demands of modern equipment. Strategically placed features abound and can be seen not only in the placement of the bold bunkering, but the many ridges and swales of the greens and fairways as well. With five sets of tee boxes, Angels Crossing provides every level of player with the opportunity to partake of many traditionally influenced design concepts such as the Redan, Biarritz, Eden, Long, Hogback and Capes. But you don’t have to be a student of architecture to enjoy the course.
In fact, many come back telling tales of the massive undulating greens that may be some of the largest in the state. The incredibly well maintained L-93 bent grass greens average over 10,000 square feet in size. Some are over 15,000 square feet, and are chock full of ridges, tiers and rolls that make them just plain fun. Many would expect greens that large to be protected by some pretty narrow fairways, but Angels Crossing has over 45 acres of tight bent grass fairways that present players maximum opportunity to take advantage of all their ground game options. Many new courses have a real estate component and Angels Crossing is no exception. However, Angels Crossing developers take a different approach to golf course living. Their approach is that folks would rather live at a great golf course rather than have an address on a good one. Only five of the 100+ residential opportunities, which include single family homes and condo living settings, border the current 18 holes and are set well off the golf course. New GM Fred Reeder is planning on a big season for the course and
his Academy. When Michigan golf ends, Fred packs up along with his guests and heads south to Cancun and The Moon Palace resort. All inclusive golf escapes hosted by Fred are available from November through April and it is a trip you and your group won’t want to miss. PLAYING THE HITS THAT MADE MICHIGAN FAMOUS BY JASON DEEGAN
THE CONSTRUCTION BOOM OF THE 1990S DID WONDERS FOR MICHIGAN GOLF.
It made us the public golf capital of the world, with more than 800 all-access courses. A new generation of must-see places, like Forest Dunes in Roscommon and Bay Harbor in Petoskey, were born. The past decade we’ve all been scurrying about, trying to play all these new layouts, and quite honestly, we’ve neglected our roots … the courses we grew up loving. It’s time to rediscover them. Or, if you’ve faithfully stuck with them over the years, let’s appreciate them all the more for their unique architecture, molded from a simpler time. There are hundreds of classics in Michigan, venerable layouts that have stood the test of time. Classical architecture is so different from modern design. Newer designs have been peppered with mounding and bunkers to promote the aerial game. The fairways are as wide as runways and their greens the size of parking lots and as wavy as the Pacific Ocean. Conversely, classic courses tend to be player friendly, or “tensionfree” as head professional Steve Braun calls his Belvedere Golf Club in Charlevoix. These courses rarely demand forced carries. The holes aren’t nearly as long, either. The challenge comes in shaping shots around doglegs and keeping the ball on the short grass. The fairways tend to be narrower and the greens smaller, but there’s usually a lane to run the ball onto the putting surface. Ah, the good old days. Take a stroll down memory lane, and tee it up at one of these classics built before 1980.

Forest Akers There’s a reason the Michigan State men’s and women’s golf programs are so good, both winning Big Ten titles this season. Their coaches and players are outstanding, yes, but so are the golf courses the Spartans train on, the 6,559-yard East and 7,013yard West courses at Forest Akers, both circa 1958. The West Course was redesigned by MSU alum Arthur Hills in 1992, adding length, bent grass greens and tees, rye grass fairways and new bunkers. Five years later, Hills transformed the East from a par 71 to a par 72. Numerous trees and bunkers were also added. The creation of the Golf LEFT: KEVIN FRISCH; RIGHT: MICHAEL BUCK

Gull Lake View The original courses, the East and West, at Gull Lake View Golf Club & Resort in Augusta often take a back seat to the newer Stonehedge designs, but they shouldn’t. MICHIGAN GOLF 2007
MICHIGAN IS BLESSED WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF PUBLIC, DAILY-FEE GOLF COURSES; 699 IN FACT, MORE THAN ANY STATE IN THE UNION AND ENOUGH HOLES TO MAKE THE LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES THE PUBLIC GOLF COURSE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. Among these courses are some of America’s best 18-hole facilities, so says Golf Digest and Golf For Women magazines. Golf Digest says seven of the country’s Top 40 public courses reside in Michigan: Arcadia Bluffs (#10), Tullymore (#14), Forest Dunes (#20) (above), Bay Harbor (#23), Black Lake (#35), Shepherd’s Hollow (#37) and Red Hawk (#40). The Gailes at Lakewood Shores Resort and Eagle Eye ranked 54th and 81st , respectively.
Incidentally, Arcadia Bluffs and Tullymore also made Golf Digest’s overall 100 best American courses, ranking 46th and 83rd, respectively. Meantime, Michigan is the only state west of Pennsylvania and east of Arizona to place any resorts among Golf For Women’s “25 Best Family Golf Resorts.” Destinations were chosen by their determination to encourage family participation. Outstanding golf is a requisite. Beyond that, resorts that were ranked provided
modern day amenities such as spas, water parks, kids camps, and other family inclusive activities. Boyne Mountain, located in Boyne City on the southeast tip of Lake Charlevoix has been recently refurbished with the addition of the Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa and Avalanche Bay Water Park. Kids-play-free programs are available as well as all-inclusive golf and lodging packages for any of Boyne’s eightcourses at the Mountain and Highlands golf resorts. Grand Traverse Resort, home to three award-winning courses on the eastern shore of Grand Traverse Bay, has undergone renovations recently. Family Escape Packages include rooms, golf, arcade tokens, and connections to family and children activities in the region.

Fall Golf The calendar may show that autumn is as long as the other seasons, but days for fall golf pass as quickly as August splendor. Act quickly and make travel plans now. The following is a sampling of fall golf value packages. Most rates are post-Labor Day weekend prices. Check each destination for specifics. Rates subject to change. Candlestone Inn and Golf Resort, Belding provides lodging and 18 holes on a classic layout starting at $69. www.candlestone.com When Gull Lake View opened in the ’60s you could walk nine holes for a $1.50. Those rates are but a memory, but $123 for two nights lodging and golf-a-plenty is pretty good. www.gullakeview.com

I didn’t get to Ireland this year, or the past five years for that matter. But I have been there and hope to some day return. Until then I’ll have The Gailes at Lakewood Shores Resort in Oscoda to remind me of Royal Portmarnock and Royal County Down. Royal room-and-round rates begin at $78 and give options on Blackshire and Serradella. www. lakewoodshores.com What’s not to like about Manistee,
where the Manistee River empties into Lake Michigan, drawing anglers from near and far in pursuit of world-class king salmon? Golf at Manistee National Golf and Resort is pretty fabulous too. Make it a fish and chip weekend. Golf for as little as $45. www.manisteenational.com Garland USA in Lewiston is as authentic as Up North golf gets: timber log cottages, big timber lodge and 72 holes of timber-rich

MICHIGAN GOLF 2007
THE NEW STANDARD FOR GOLF IN THE MIDWEST Eagle Eye Golf Club at Hawk Hollow is the result of a close knit partnership between Hawk Hollow Golf Properties and noted course designer Chris Lutzke in collaboration with Pete Dye. From the rolling landscape to the signature 17th Island Green the course has been designed to create magnificent shot values and challenges from each of four sets of tees while retaining playability. Eagle Eye is a “must play” for the serious golfer.
