When angling for a story idea for this issue it seemed natural that the state with the most water – 11,000 inland lakes and 36,000 miles of rivers and streams, to say nothing of the Great Lakes – provided a natural pairing with golf. You literally can’t hit a ball in Michigan without finding water or wetlands

at some point in your round. Which leads me to the “Fish-N-Chips” feature Janina Parrott Jacobs contributed on page 24. Janina oriented her travels to four regions of the state: The Manistee River in West Michigan, the White Fish River and Little Bay De Noc in the Western U.P., the Pigeon River and Hidden River in the Northern Lower Peninsula, and the Chippewa River Basin in Central Michigan. As she puts it, “If you’ve had it with trying to stay out of wetlands and water while playing golf…submerge yourself in fishing.” You needn’t make combining fishing with golf difficult, either. Most anywhere you tee it up a nearby fishery is a chip shot away. I for one am seldom without my ultra-light rod-and-reel combo, a handful of jigs and plastic grubs, some wading shoes or waders, a pair of old jeans and a towel. I can slip into a river like the Pine, the Chippewa, the Flat or Little Manistee and most assuredly catch nice size smallmouth bass which provide great angling fun well into September. There’s a lot of golf to be played in Michigan now till the snow flies, on courses that have played significant roles in state and national tournament history. The PGA Championship returned to Oakland Hills Country Club this August, leading contributing editor Jason Deegan to consider that many of us are not aware of the myriad tournaments Michigan hosts in a given season, and all of the courses are open to public play: The Bear, The Legend, The Meadows, The Heather, Fieldstone, Eagle Eye and Bedford Valley, to name a few. As Jason invites on page 20, “If you fancy yourself a player, test-drive these 15 tracks for a tournament-tough challenge any time.” I visited golf architect Steve Smyers’ Website to learn that “risk-reward strategy, creative shot-making and drama are hallmarks of his design.” Yip. That’s Lochenheath in Williamsburg, a course you couldn’t play the past four years unless you doled out significant coin to become a member. Grand Traverse Resort has taken over management of Lochenheath, which means they now boast 72 holes of the best golf Northern Michigan can provide. Book a tee time to play this exclusive design and see page 24 for more news on Michigan golf. Michigan has the equivalent of eight golf courses to every county and 433 miles of streams running through each. Time’s a wastin’. If I don’t see you on the tee, I’ll hook up with you on the water. Orchard Lake CC
Michigan Open Migrating South The Michigan PGA announced June 2 of this year that the Michigan Open, synonymous with The Bear golf course at Grand Traverse Resort in Acme the past 28 seasons, is moving to Orchard Lake CC on Orchard Lake in southeast Michigan where it will host the 2009 and 2010 events. It was last held there in 1944. The Bear began hosting the Open the year it welcomed public play in 1985 and widely marketed as the toughest test of golf in the state. Anyone who has played it would agree. But six-time Open winner Scott Hebert tamed the course like no one else, winning all of his championships at the place he now resides as Head Professional. Commenting on the move, Michigan PGA Executive Director Kevin Helm said the move was somewhat motivated by Orchard Lake’s proximity to Detroit. “The Detroit area provides a greater number of players the opportunity to play more affordably and to be closer to home and work. These elements
8

along with an outstanding golf course should really generate a lot of interest and excitement for the Michigan Open,” said Helm. There’s little if any similarity in the two courses. The Golden Bear himself, Jack Nicklaus, designed The Bear. Orchard Lake was built in 1927 by the famous British architectural firm of Colt and Alison. Orchard Lake will play tough, however, a requisite for every Open set up. Head Professional Brian Dice said the course will measure just shy of 7,000 yards and require “players to use every club in their bag.” Historically, some of golf’s most famous names won the Michigan Open since it was first played in 1916. Walter Hagen captained five Ryder Cup teams and won the event in 1921 when it was played at Oakland Hills. Al Watraus won five Michigan Opens, as did Randy Erskine. Chick Harbert won four Opens and the 1954 PGA Championship. To learn more about the Michigan Open and how you can get tickets for 2009, visit www.michigan. pga.com COURTESY ORCHARD LAKE CC

Going Public The Club at Lochenheath in Williamsburg welcomed public play in 2008. Under a new management arrangement with Grand Traverse Resort, the 7,200-yard Steve Smyers design promises the golfer a unique take on the game. “The course is scenic and challenging,” commented Grant Channing, Executive VP and General Manager of Grand Traverse Resort. “This is an excellent opportunity for residents, visitors, and golf groups to enjoy beautiful views of the Bay.” Lochenheath was public when it opened in 2001 to build awareness of the club and attract prospective investors and residents. It went private in 2004. Fodor’s Golf Digest proclaimed it as a “near perfect golf course” to play. Golf Magazine and Golfweek included it among their Top Ten courses. Get a hole-by-hole description by visiting www.lochenheath. com. Tee times can be scheduled through Grand Traverse Resort, which also features The Bear (Jack Nicklaus), The Wolverine (Gary Player), and Spruce Run (William Newcomb).

Tops ‘Em All
Every other year since 1992, Treetops Resort in Gaylord has earned Silver Medal Resort status awarded by Golf Magazine as one of America’s finest resort and golf destinations. This year was no different. Teaming with 81 holes of golf, Treetops features the Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Masterpiece layout, the Premier design of Tom Fazio, and the three Rick Smith courses: Signature, Tradition and the one-of-a-kind Par-3 Threetops. “The quality and variety of golf at Treetops is quite possibly the best collection of golf found anywhere and to be recognized along side some of golf’s finest destinations is a true honor, said Smith, the resorts owner and managing partner. Treetops’ amenities beyond golf weighed heavily in reader voting: 23 downhill ski slopes, 238 guest rooms, three restaurants, Treetops Spa, an award-winning child development center, retail outlets, heated pools and more. Other news from the Tops. The Par 3 Shootout returns, albeit a different format than the one that saw Fred Couples claim three titles. The Par 3 Amateur Shootout is scheduled for August 29-31 and will include practice rounds on the Fazio and Smith Courses with 27 holes of two-man competition on the final two days. The Threetops course will be set up much like it was when Treetops hosted the nationally televised Shootouts. One month later, September 28-30, Treetops plays host to their annual Pepsi Charity Fall Invitational, a Pro-Am Scramble event. Tips Candlestone Burns Bright Long the home of the West Michigan Amateur Golf Tournament, the future of Candlestone Golf Resort in Belding was in doubt going into the 2008 season. Sold at auction in April, the buyers couldn’t put the deal together which left the 18-hole course, restaurant and 25-room Candlestone Inn in limbo. Enter local residents Steve Leach of Rockford and John Durkee of Cedar Springs. They saw an opportunity to keep the course open and return the facility to the status it enjoyed when it graced the West Michigan golf scene in 1978. Candlestone was the first course to bear the signature of Jerry Matthews, son of W. Bruce Matthews, Michigan’s most heralded golf course architect. “At this point nothing will change,” said Leach. “Candlestone will remain a golf attraction, a nice family place to enjoy the great food while overlooking the beautiful woods surrounding the course, as well as a comfortable place to rest your head for an evening or weekend,” Beyond seeing the purchase as an investment, the new owners were motivated to keep the course a viable, attractive business for the Belding, Greenville and Rockford communities. Leach and Durkee plan to spend 2008 learning where improvements are most needed for the course, restaurant and lodge.
Mountain of Pride Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville has long prided itself on leading Michigan resorts in family participation and having some of the top teaching golf professionals in the business. The announcement of another $10 million in renovations and the addition of Adam Schriber takes the family-operated facility to a new level. Schriber joins Crystal as the new lead instructor for the Crystal Junior Elite program. He cofounded Performax Golf Academy in Dallas and was instrumental in the success of the David Ledbetter Golf Academy, serving as Director of Instruction, Western U.S. and U.S. Liaison for the Golf Academy. Schriber will work under Director of Golf Brad Dean, twice named the Teacher of the Year by the Michigan PGA. Renovations are more additions than anything, like the ski-in, ski-out community – Bungalows of Crystal Glen, the new Crystal Spa and the one-ofa-kind Alpine Mountain Slide. The slide, or slides, is the Crystal Coaster: two parallel, 1,600-foot tracks that start 250 feet up the mountain. “From top to bottom, the rider controls the speed,” explained owner Jim MacInnes. “Whether it be a slow and easy ride through the beautiful terrain or action-packed excitement through the dips and high-banked turns, it’s a ride that will delight people of all ages.” Learn more about the Crystal Mountain teaching academy and the latest additions on the Internet at www.crystalmountain.com.

A Different View Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort in Augusta doesn’t spend much time touting itself as a leading teaching academy or golf school, but they’ll take the accolades none-the-less. “It’s the long-term investment in golf that we’re after,” said Ashleigh Kosin, Gull Lake’s Director of Marketing. It was a bit surprising then when the National Golf Course Owners Association awarded the 90-hole resort and residential community with the 2008 Player Development Award. This honor was coupled with the Michigan Golf Course Owners Association Dul Family Player Development Leadership Award. It’s the emphasis on player development and encouragement to discover and enjoy the game of golf that sets Gull Lake apart, versus the role of teaching academies and golf schools. “Our first goal is to get kids hooked, and then we just want to keep them coming back,” said Kosin. Destinations: Gaylord Golf Mecca THE GAYLORD GOLF MECCA PARTNERS WITH GOLFSWITCH AND GOLFPAC The Gaylord Golf Mecca, known as the Midwest’s summer golf “mustplay” destination, is celebrating its 20th golf season as a leading golf destination. The group has been promoting the golf destination since 1987. New for the 2008 golf season, the Gaylord Golf Mecca continues to strengthen its’ marketing position as a leading golf destination with its new partnerships with GolfSwitch, a real-time golf and vacation booking system and GOLFPAC, the countries leading golf package wholesaler company. These new partnerships will provide online tee-time technology and vacation package bookings to the 21 member golf properties and 19 lodging facilities. The senior member of the Mecca is the in-town Otsego Club & Resort, currently under new ownership with Osprey Recreation. The Classic course offers great views of the Pigeon River Valley and The Tribute offers 20-mile vista views and an up close and personal tour of the Sturgeon River Valley basin. Treetops Resort is an award-winning resort long known for exciting and memorable golf. Treetop’s inventory of four championship courses and a tough par-3 tract designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., Tom Fazio, and Rick Smith represents some of the best golf holes on one property, anywhere in the country. Garland resort has long been known for its special Northern Michigan ambiance. When it comes to golf, Garland resort’s four courses, Swampfire, Monarch, Reflections, and Fountains offer a beautiful parkland setting weaving through more than 3,500 acres of the state’s most scenic forests, lakes and streams. Located in and around the Gaylord area, several courses have grown in popularity. A must-play in the Mecca is Black Forest at Wilderness Valley, also owned by Osprey Recreation. Black Forest was designed by arguably the most popular architect in the business- Tom Doak. Since its debut in 1994, The Loon has been referred to as the “player’s” golf course in Gaylord and Marsh Ridge has gained statewide praise for its challenging layout over 35 acres of unspoiled marshlands. One of Gaylord’s more mature golf courses, the Pines Course at Michaywe has hosted two prestigious Michigan Amateur Championships. Located right next door to Michaywe is the Mountain Lakes course, formerly the Lakes Golf Club, which has currently undergone new course renovations this season. The Natural at Beaver Creek Resort winds through elevated forested terrain around some of the most scenic wetlands found in Northern Michigan. Located just west of town is the popular semi-private Gaylord Country Club, which features a classic parkland style design and some of the best greens found in Northern Michigan. Black Bear Resort offers some of the most diversified terrain in the state by combining Scottish links style holes with traditional tree lined Northern Michigan hardwood holes. Located on the outskirts of the Gaylord area are two very popular layouts. Black Lake Golf Club is an 18-hole facility cut from a 1,000-acre forest retreat owned by the United Auto Workers. Rees Jones, the nationally respected architect, handled all design work. Elk Ridge Golf Club, located on the eastern outskirts of the Mecca, is a big rolling course with elevation changes, magnificent stands of red and white pine trees, wetland and streams, with tough undulating greens. When it comes to tournament golf in Michigan, two courses stand above the crowd: the South course at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township and Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc. Both historic clubs will hit impressive milestones this summer. The PGA Tour’s Buick Open not only celebrated its 50-year anniversary in June, but Warwick has been its host since 1979, a span of 30 years, second-longest on Tour. Oakland Hills welcomes the season’s final major, the PGA Championship, Aug. 4-10. The Monster has provided some epic moments in golf, hosting six U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships and the Ryder Cup. Most of us will never get to tee it up at these exclusive private clubs. But don’t fret. There are some pretty good consolation prizes when it comes to Michigan’s tournament golf scene. A number of the state’s public courses hold prominent events, from the Michigan Amateur to the Michigan Open. If you fancy yourself a player, grade your skills against the state’s best golfers on 15 tracks that will give you a tournament-tough challenge. CHATEAU GRAND TRAVERSE CHANTAL

Grand Traverse, The Bear
n The Bear in Acme – Jack Nicklaus created a challenge so severe it’s considered one of America’s 50 toughest public courses. Host of the Michigan Open the past 28 years, the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa’s premier course features 7,078 yards of ridged fairways, deep bunkers and thick grasses, with just enough water splashed in to make any pro pucker. The event moves to Orchard Lake Country Club in 2009. n Belvedere in Charlevoix – By hosting the Michigan Amateur a record 39 times, this classic 6,704-yard William Watson design continues to withstand the test of time. Tom Watson honed his game here as a youth. n Bedford Valley in Battle Creek – What TOP: SHANTY CREEK; BOTTOM: BELVEDERE

tournament hasn’t visited Bedford Valley? Its central location and straightforward layout attracts events for all ages. It’s the home course for Battle Creek Central High and annually hosts the Club Car Michigan Senior Open. In the past, the Michigan Open, the Michigan Maxfli PGA Junior Championship, the Michigan Publinx State Match Play, the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships and the NCAA Division III National Championships have teed it up as well. A new clubhouse will enhance the experience of playing this tree-lined 6,967-yard William Mitchell design. n Pilgrim’s Run in Pierson – Hard to believe that a handful of amateur architects, with the guidance of trained pro Mike DeVries, could design a 7,084-yard course worthy of
a U.S. Open qualifier, but it’s true. n Wild Bluff in Brimley – If this scenic 6,988-yard Mike Husby layout, the centerpiece of the Bay Mills Resort & Casino, were just a little closer, golfers throughout the state would be flocking to soak up its vistas more often. Its proximity to the U.P. border attracted a Canadian Tour event from 2002-05. n The Meadows in Allendale – The Grand Valley State University men’s and women’s teams are lucky to have such a fine course and practice facility at their disposal. The 7,034-yard course has hosted the Michigan High School Athletic Association boys state finals five times and the girls three times, the NCAA Division III women’s championship four times and the NCAA Division 2 MICHIGAN GOLF 2008

men’s championship twice. Players sometimes come away from the experience of playing The Meadows with horror stories of big numbers. n The Legend at Shanty Creek in Bellaire – The Legend lives up to its name. Its eyepopping elevated tees and strategic doglegs make it a favorite for all. It combines with Shanty Creek’s Schuss Mountain Golf Club to annually host the E-Z-GO Shanty Creek Classic, a 36-hole, two-day tournament that attracts the state’s best PGA pros. The first round is better-ball stroke play, followed by a 2-man scramble in the final round. n The Alpine at Boyne Mountain Resort in Boyne Falls – The 7,054-yard Alpine used to share the spotlight with its sister course, the Monument, for the Tournament of Champions, but now all 54 holes will stay on the layout that meanders over open meadows and tight, wooded corridors. The tournament, founded by the Michigan PGA section in 1992, brings together the most diverse field of male and female professionals and amateurs in the state. n Fieldstone in Auburn Hills – Fieldstone carries one of the highest slope ratings in metro Detroit at 142. No wonder the 6,978-yard course annually hosts a Buick Open qualifier. Arthur Hills used the natural wetlands to create a target golf bonanza. n Eagle Eye in Bath – Don’t feel bad. Even the state’s best PGA professionals sometimes crash-and-burn at the island green TOP: SHANTY CREEK; BOTTOM: EAGLE EYE
on No. 17 during the Michigan PGA championship (which is also played on its sister track, Hawk Hollow). Although just a youngster at five years old, Eagle Eye has matured enough to host a U.S. Open qualifier earlier this summer. n The Orchards in Washington Township – One of metro Detroit’s best “country clubs for a day, this Robert Trent Jones Jr. layout hosted the 2002 U.S. Amateur Publinks championship. These USGA events generally don’t make any money, but they do help elevate the reputation of the host clubs. Honestly, this silky smooth layout didn’t need the boost. It’s a pure joy to play. n The Heather at Boyne Highlands Resort in Harbor Springs – Robert Trent Jones Sr. launched the golf boom in northern Michigan with this gem in 1967. To celebrate its 40th anniversary and the 2006 Michigan Amateur, a bunker renovation revitalized the 7,093-yard course. Its epic 456-yard finishing hole, requiring a 180-yard approach shot over water, has decided the fate of many scorecards. n Lake Forest Golf Club in Ann Arbor – A handful of current LPGA players regularly teed it up here during a Futures Tour event from 2001-06. World No. 1 Loren Ochoa beat the 6,600-yard course, and the field, to win in 2002. A linksy front nine on rolling terrain transforms into a wooded back nine with wetlands and wildlife. A five-acre practice facility completes the facility. n The Mountain Ridge course at Crystal Mountain Resort – Since 2003, this 6,984-yard Bill Newcomb design has hosted the Michigan Women’s Open, a pro event that attracts Futures Tour players and even some LPGA pros. The par-3 17th and par-5 18th dramatically tumble off the ski hill to end a rousing round. n Forest Akers East and West in East Lansing – With the East almost 500 yards shorter, the 7,013-yard West is the true championship course at Forest Akers. Combine these two traditional Arthur Hills designs with a central location and a fabulous practice facility and it’s no wonder that the MHSAA regularly holds its boys and girls state finals on the greens of Spartan country. n Eagle Crest in Ypsilanti – The home of the Eastern Michigan University men’s and women’s golf teams continues to host its share of MHSAA state finals. The dramatic par-5 16th hole reaches a climax with a peninsula green that juts out into Ford Lake. w

We may not wish to admit this, but golfers and fishermen are a lot alike: we prefer good weather but will tolerate the bad and downright inhospitable; we tackle the well-known venues but search out our own little secret places; we can play by ourselves yet having a trusted buddy or two along for the angling encourages unspoken silence which bonds friendships; we pour over new toys and tweak our equipment to get that little extra bit of performance; we exaggerate the events of our rounds and the size of the ones that got away; golfers and anglers are both approachable. What fisherman has ever not answered ‘having any luck?’ with an honest answer or quip? Golfers will offer the same courteous small talk – but don’t ask after you’ve seen someone fourputt the 18th. Michigan astronaut Jerry Linenger said there were few landmarks that stood out while orbiting the Earth aboard Russian space station Mir. One was the Great Wall of China; another was the outline of Michigan, resplendent in greens and blues as well as the sapphire circles and streaks of over 11,000 inland lakes and 36,000 miles of rivers and streams, which prompted his move to Traverse City once he landed. That’s reason enough to look at two nearby destinations, one south and one north.

Manistee National Golf Club is part of a relatively new consortium, Osprey Recreational Properties whose tagline is ‘We Are Michigan Golf”. A bold statement, yes, but Osprey meets the challenge with the two courses at Manistee seemingly named after golf faults, Cutter’s Ridge and Canthooke Valley, though one would hope Canthooke would not apply to the nearby angling as well. Architect Jerry Matthews’ Cutter’s Ridge and Canthooke Valley, designed by Gary Pulsipher are quite different in design but are both environmentally sensitive; Canthooke Valley is more traditional and playable with few forced carries and minimal wetlands – though the 14th hole has guardian waste bunkers and ‘canthooke’ transforms into ‘must-hook’ in order to negotiate the hole. Cutter’s Ridge has the wetlands Canthooke lacks
and GAM Women’s Senior contestants may be grateful that their championship on August 25-26 will be held on the gentler of the two courses. If you’ve had it with trying to stay out of wetlands and water while playing golf, the Manistee area provides superb opportunities to submerge yourself for great fishing on the Manistee River, which is famous for brown, rainbow (Steelhead) and brook trout, smallmouth and rock bass. Its Indian name, Manistiqweita means ‘crooked’, a characteristic which translates into great fishing because of the constant flow and movement with pooling at the bends and twists bringing an abundance of food. Fish love when their dinner comes to them. The Manistee is regarded as one of the country’s best and most stable rivers. What makes it so special? Fishing expert Ray Schmidt, of
Schmidt Outfitters in Wellston, explains: “The water quality of the Manistee remains excellent despite any bad rains or natural disasters because of the flood plains and soil type. Also, there is no industry or man-made pollution along the river. More importantly, the Manistee is protected by two government programs: The U.S. Forest Service deems it a ‘Wild and Scenic River’ and the state claims it for the Natural River Act”. Trout love the cool and clear waters of the Manistee. Other unique migratory fish like prehistoric White Lake sturgeon and Chinook Salmon swim in from Lake Michigan continuing up toward the Tippy Dam. Complete guide services for catch-and-release only are available. Schmidt Outfitters is located in the heart of the Michigan Century Circle, a 100
mile radius of wildlife, rivers, ponds, streams, and backwoods. Owners Ray and Angie Schmidt can be reached at 888-221-9056 or 231-848-4191. Forest for great fishing, nature watching, and solitude. Limited fly-fishing is permitted on the Maple River, which runs through Hidden River in spectacular fashion, but to catch trophy fish, you need to get off the beaten path. “I take a lot of dirt roads, really twotracks, to get to my favorite spots. You don’t find fish off of a paved road,â€? said Dunaske, who spent 3½ years in Alaska and 45 years as a guide and teacher. “People in Michigan are spoiled because we have so much more access here than in Alaska, where you have few roads and have to fly most places to get good fishing. The weather plays a big factor and it is expensive.â€? Dunaske charges about $150 - $200 per person for half-day excursions, lasting 4-6 hours. All fishing gear, tackle, bait, and food are provided. You need to bring a one-day fishing license, polarized sunglasses, billed hat ideally covering the neck and ears, khaki slacks and a longsleeve shirt. Shorts are not recommended because you’ll be donning waders and bugs will eat your arms alive if left exposed. Other items suggested include a first aid kit, insect repellent, plastic garbage bags, an extra knife, rain gear, and a source of fire. The biggest mistake people make? “People believe too much of what they read in books and see on TV about where to place the fly. Fly-fishing isn’t like A River Runs Through It and doesn’t require big muscles and major throwing. It’s a gentle action which can be picked up,â€? said Dunaske.

About 70% of his clients are novices; women are much better students than men. He added, “They listen better and are not driven by a quantity quest; however the frustration level is the same as men if they aren’t catching anything.” Looks like another similar golf comparison, Tony! The Maple River is prominent as 1.5 miles of it winds through the 7101 yard layout. Great conditioning, a nice mix of pines, links and dunes on the middle holes, and hardwoods with some elevation mixed in provide a perfect venue for a challenging yet relaxing round. To comprehend the incredible natural beauty
of Bucks Run Golf Club in Mt. Pleasant one must take a quick peek at the true love of its creator, prolific Michigan course architect Jerry Matthews, who originally set out to be a conservation officer. “I just love being outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. I could spend days doing nothing else, coming inside only when I had to,” Jerry mused. In 1988 Jerry changed the name of his architectural company to Natural Course Design to reflect his continuing philosophy of blending design with nature and making it appear as if the course was always there. Golf Digest Magazine’s Places to Play gives Bucks Run 4.5 stars proving it’s the golfers who love the mix of natural wetlands, lakes, and woodlands. Who can fathom how anyone can play Bucks Run and
not want to immediately go fishing? Seeing about 1.5 miles of the amazingly brisk waters of the Chippewa roiling by on seven holes and then conversely, the peaceful serenity of Fisher Lake on the 9th and 18th holes evoke widely differing emotions; in the end, it’s all about gettin’ and nettin’ the fish. Head Professional Mitch Bos said the river is loaded with smallmouth bass and steelhead trout. While you are not allowed to fish the river from the golf course, there are still public entries where you can get to the banks and wade in alongside the 12th and 17th holes. Mitch added, “tons of smallmouths have been caught by anglers who are tubing and canoeing down the river”. Eighty-acre Lake Fisher is home to walleye, trout, perch, and bluegill where you can fish off the dock, the boathouse or the pontoon. Anyone is welcome but no gear is provided, so you must bring your own. Bucks Run is located at 1559 Chippewa Rd., Mt. Mini-bar Fish-n-chips recipe
No proper fishing tale is complete without some tips for the Piscean delicacy. The trick is this: - cook it ASAP after catching it - ask your guide about proper filleting techniques because you don’t want tiny fish bones or fish-doo to mar the savory experience of truly fresh food. Chef Jon of Capers Restaurant in Detroit says you must soak the fillets in a liquid of your choice, usually milk. “The next step is crucial: dust the fish in a flour or cornmeal mix. If you don’t do this, the beer (wet) batter won’t adhere during the frying process and you’ll end up with mushy fish.”

If you are one of those who eschews good advice and thinks using a guide is a waste of money, consider this: would you take up golf on your own – with no professional help - and expect to shoot par immediately? Then you probably shouldn’t go fishing without using the services of a qualified guide like the ones mentioned here. If you are a true novice at either sport, the maze of equipment, terminology, and advice will have your head spinning like a power slice or a screaming 10-lb. test line with a 30 pound trophy attached. You may think you’re playing or fishing for fun, but you need something to show for your toils. If you still won’t pay for expert help to achieve that, here are a few tips to get you through: • you can’t catch fish that aren’t there; know your species and where they hang out; • fish don’t like light (no eyelids, remember?) and don’t want to be seen - or eaten, so they’ll hang out under shelter, in weeds, or near rocks; • dawn and dusk are the best times to fish • if fish don’t like what’s on the menu they won’t bite; fish are energy efficient and want food to come to them; it is vital to have the right bait, whether it is alive or artificial. • In the end, it’s acceptable to tread Michigan’s bountiful waters knowing little. Ray Schmidt will gladly take novices on an excursion instead of forcing them into fishing school. He adds, “You know, in Germany you must complete a course which covers environmental issues and proper etiquette before they’ll ever let you out in the real fishing world….but that’s OK. I don’t mind taking inexperienced anglers out for ‘playing lessons’. Who cares? I have the greatest job on the planet.” Doesn’t sound like a bad idea for golfers either. But wait – I thought I had the greatest job on the planet.

FOREST DUNES
NORTHERN MICHIGAN IS BLESSED WITH SOME WONDERFUL COURSES CARVED FROM WOODED ROLLING TERRAIN. But only one has the look and feel on an inland links, where indigenous dune grasses mingle with hardwoods and pine to create a stunning scene that is second to none. Welcome to Forest Dunes, a Tom Weiskopf design that skirts the Huron National Forest near
Roscommon. Since opening, Forest Dunes has received national acclaim, but the experience has only been enhanced over the years. The addition of an elegant Adirondack Lodge that serves as a clubhouse and the management experience of Troon Golf, one of the country’s leading golf operators, showcase a first-class facility that will someday be completely private. Play it now while you have the chance. New are stay-and-play packages, with lodging in cozy lakeside guesthouses. A fabulous practice facility features a 2 ½ acre putting course that can be used for instruction or relaxation before or after a round. Weiskopf let Mother Nature guide his 7,100-yard layout. He incorporated a minimalist design for the layout, ranked No. 2 among Michigan’s public courses by Golfweek. Forest Dunes dances through hardwoods one moment and sand-strewn waste bunkers the next. The back nine introduces a dunes-like setting that seems foreign to Michigan. The par-5s at No. 15, named “Hideaway,” and No. 18, named “Eagle Chance,” can make

or break any round. If your match hasn’t been settled after 18 dramatic holes, the 19th hole can settle any bets once and for all. If all this doesn’t add up to possibly Michigan’s best golf experience, consider this: Forest Dunes is the only Michigan golf course, and one of just 16 worldwide, to earn Audubon International’s prized Signature Gold certification. Forest Dunes sets the gold standard for excellence in many areas including chemical and pest management practices, use of low impact chemicals and organic based fertilizers, bi-annual soil testing, pesticides sprayed on a curative basis only, and use of grasses which are drought tolerant and have good disease resistance. Golfers can play guilt-free, knowing both they and the environment are getting treated right by the staff at Forest Dunes. It’s a round of golf you’ll always treasure.
RAVINES GOLF CLUB
THEY CALL ARNOLD PALMER “THE KING” FOR A REASON. EVERYTHING HE DOES IS CLOSE TO ROYALTY. And that applies to his course designs. Palmer’s unique design at The Ravines Golf Club in Saugatuck mimics his swash-buckling, go-for-broke style. It’s dramatic and brimming with personality. Opened in 1999, this west Michigan treat continues to test players while invigorating the senses with scenery overload. The first tee shot introduces players to the challenges that lie ahead on the 7,132-yard course, which plays to a difficult slope (142) and rating (73.9) for those brave enough to play from the tips. Show up early to warm up on the sprawling practice facility, because you’ll need to be ready right out of the gate. The first crack of the round demands a tee shot that carries 100 to 150 yards (depending on your tee and angle) over a ravine to the safety of the first fairway. But don’t celebrate yet. There’s another carry to navigate to hit the green. Two large water hazards come into play at the par-5 fourth that boomerangs to the right and the par-5 ninth that snakes in all directions. The best approach at
No. 9 is to execute a couple of 200-yard shots from the tee and fairway, leaving a wedge into a green guarded by the pond that just won’t go away. The fun has just begun. The ravine that gave the course its name lies in wait on the back nine. After a waterlogged 11th hole, the 165-yard twelfth demands a heroic shot over the gorge to a green guarded by trouble on nearly all sides. The par-5 No. 15 is even more dramatic, both in length (623 yards) and its setting. A big 200-yard-plus drive is required to carry the 60-foot ravine to a fairway lined by a cathedral of pine trees. Farther ahead, the green sits tucked behind a wetland. The homeward par 5 is a shot maker’s delight that is best played conservatively. Whether you’ve played like The King himself or a joker, a charming clubhouse called Arnie’s Cottage and its award-winning menu will complete a fantastic day at The Ravines. Stay and play packages are available through four hotel partners listed on the club’s web site. Don’t miss teeing it up at The
Ravines. For one round, at least, you’ve lived like a king.

EAGLE EYE/HAWK HOLLOW
IT’S JUST ONE HOLE, A TINY LITTLE PAR 3 OF JUST 146 YARDS FROM THE TIPS. BUT THE PAR-3 17TH HOLE AT EAGLE EYE represents everything that is good about the impressive golf destination Darryl Kesler has built in the middle of farm country near East Lansing. It shows the vision and creativity – and the dedication to being a firstclass facility – which Kesler used in building his green kingdom of fairways, tees and greens. The 17th hole
is a true replica of the famous No. 17 island green at the TPC of Sawgrass, home of The Players Championship. Hitting the green requires precision and guts. Memorable golf demands both. But Eagle Eye, and the whole complex for that matter, is hardly a one-hole wonder. The entire Keslerowned golf facility encompasses nearly two square miles, with two championship courses, a putting course, two classy clubhouses with banquet and conference facilities, three practice facilities and home sites ranging from single family to condominium living to estate homes. You might come play golf for a day, and end up staying considerably longer. Michigan’s most prolific architect Jerry Matthews started it all with his design at Hawk Hollow, which made Golf Digest’s Best New Public Courses list. Hawk Hollow grew to 27 holes and remains a local favorite. The Falcon, a walking nine on the west side of Chandler Road, and the Little Hawk, one of only a handful of bentgrass, 18-hole putting courses in the world, are added amenities that few facilities offer. They can be great
fun for families or beginners or just for a low-key, less expensive round of golf. Eagle Eye, with its grand clubhouse and massive banquet facility, became the king of Kesler’s castle in 2003. Architect Chris Lutzke, a protégé of legendary Pete Dye, borrowed all the tricks from his mentor to build a monumental test that hosted a U.S. Open qualifier earlier this summer. Eagle Eye’s twin sisters – the finishing par-5s at No. 9 and No. 18 that wrap around the same lake – are both beautiful and beguiling at once. Even Dye admits Eagle Eye ranks among the best courses anywhere. “Some of mine are pretty bad,” Dye said at the grand opening. “This one is good. It’s got a lot of ambience. It has a great look. This course is good enough for a major championship.” The Michigan section of the PGA picked the complex as its home for that very reason. It regularly hosts its PGA Championship on both Hawk Hollow and Eagle Eye. Are you up for the challenge?

MACATAWA LEGENDS
“BIRTH OF A LEGEND.” THE WORDS ARE MORE THAN JUST A MARKETING SLOGAN FOR THE NEW MACATAWA Legends Golf & Country Club. The words ring true throughout this budding golf resort in Holland. Since taking over the operations of Macatawa Legends in 2007, Hawthorne Suites Golf Resorts remains committed to making it Michigan’s newest golf destination and a premier country club, all wrapped in one luxury package. The new 6,000-square-foot clubhouse offers the comforts of home, featuring a lounge, full-service restaurant and 220-person banquet and conference center. Executive Chef Tom Webb, who began his culinary career with the Ritz Carlton Hotel of Boston, offers a menu to delight the taste buds. Visual stimulation comes from the clubhouse’s elevated perch, looking down on holes 1, 9, 10 and 18 and the lake that separates the finishing holes of each nine. The list of amenities rivals that of any modern-day country club: a large practice range and putting greens, a well-stocked golf shop, locker rooms, a banquet area overlooking the course and the unique octagon-shaped Legends Grille, offering the best in casual dining and a full bar.
Tennis courts, a massive aquatic center and state-of-the-art fitness center with the latest exercise equipment all add up to a lifestyle that any family or vacation guest would love. Two new pools and a massive 28-person spa highlight the aquatic complex. The children’s pool is a zero clearance with water fountains for youngsters to splash around in. The other has wheelchair accessible ramp and swim lanes. The course makes a splash with golfers. Architect Ray Hearn considers the windswept layout one of his best efforts. Not too bad, considering Hearn has won respect and awards with Moose Ridge, the Strategic Fox and The Grande, all in southeast Michigan. A five-tee setup (along with two special children’s tees) ensures an enjoyable round for any level of player. The 7,246-yard layout was designed as a tribute to links golf where the game was born. Nine holes feature water and several large waste areas line the fairways. “The golf course was planned to complement the surrounding residential development in a positive and harmonious manner,” Hearns
said. “The two create one of the State’s most ambitious and significant developments in recent years.” Are you ready to experience the “Birth of a Legend” firsthand? To inquire, call 616-738-7800 or visit www.macatawalegends.com.

TREETOPS
WHEN ROBERT TRENT JONES SR. STOOD ON THE SIXTH TEE FOR HIS ACCLAIMED COURSE CALLED THE MASTERPIECE IN THE LATE 1980s, little did he know just how important that moment would be for Michigan golf. He waxed about the panoramic views of the “treetops” in all directions. The 120-foot plunge from tee to green stirred his imagination and soul. His sentiments not only launched what would become Treetops Resort in Gaylord, but helped create a move-
ment that put northern Michigan on the golf map. The Treetops Resort has grown into a world-class golf destination and the anchor of the thriving Gaylord Golf Mecca, known as “America’s Summer Golf Capital.” Receiving another silver medal award from Golf Magazine in 2008, Treetops can rightfully claim its position among the top resorts in the country. Wonderful rolling topography, in the heart of the Pigeon River Valley, has sculpted the personality of its courses. The elevation changes are mostly subtle, yet dramatic enough in spots to leave players in breathless awe. The resort’s four courses – Rick Smith’s Tradition and Signature courses, Tom Fazio’s Premier course and The Masterpiece – can stack up with any foursome of resort courses in the country. The golf school, headlined by Smith, teaches all the shots needed to tame these layouts. The resort’s Threetops par-3 course, where Lee Trevino made his $1 million hole-in-one during a Par-3 shootout, might be the biggest thrill at the resort. Threetops. Wages on birdies and greenies are a must. Since Smith and his partners purchased the resort in 2003, Treetops has continued to invest in the future, adding a Starbucks internet café, a state-of-the-art game room with five high-definition televisions and a new children’s adventure center. The lodging has been upgraded as well. Because the golf is so good, some of the resort’s other activities get overshadowed, although they shouldn’t be forgotten. Sport and recreational activities include fly fishing, canoeing, hiking, skiing, tubing and snowshoeing in the winter months and a spa that’s nothing short of world-class: sauna, hot tubs, hot stones, massages, manicures, pedicures and hair styling. Packages to suit all styles, from value-oriented visits to golf trips of a lifetime, can be found by calling 1-888-873-3867 or visiting www.treetops.com. You’ll be glad you did.
TRUE NORTH
TRUE NORTH GOLF CLUB IN HARBOR SPRINGS OFFERS THE BEAUTY AND CONDITIONING OF AN EXCLUSIVE PRIVATE COUNTRY CLUB FOR public players. What’s not to love about that? The 7,017-yard course made the top 10 in Travel and Leisure Golf Magazine’s ‘Best New Private Courses’ ranking in 2004, but new owner John Hover plans to keep it open to anybody for the foreseeable future, but not by compromising True North’s private club values. The stone and dark wood clubhouse delivers a backwoods motif, with a patio perched above the 18th green, good for enjoying a relaxing moment in time after a memorable round of golf. Architect Jim Engh, Golf Digest’s 2003 Architect of the Year, bucks tradition whenever he designs courses, but that’s what makes them fun. He was given 320 acres of magical land to make it happen at True North. Four of the holes have a natural elevation drop of 60 to 100 feet. Water comes into play on five approach shots, most notably the large lake on the 442-yard par-4 ninth. True North hangs its reputation on the wonder of its par-5s, most notably holes one and 18 which stretch to 540-or-more yards.
The dramatic 562-yard eighth hole is among 16 par 5 regional finalists from the Upper Midwest in the John Deere Credit contest to find the “Most Beautifully Brutal Golf Holes in North America.” The hole features an elevation change of 90 feet from tee to green. It plays entirely uphill and offers virtually no flat lies. “You almost get winded thinking about that climb,” observes one of the panelists, Jeff Babineau of Golfweek. The 18th hole is a testy riskreward par-5. Try to bomb it off the tee to an elevated fairway that acts as a shelf along the left side, providing a much simpler approach to the green. Play it safe down the right side off the tee, and even with a good second shot, you’re stuck with a blind approach to an elevated green tucked behind a tree. The surroundings look and feel so natural for a reason. True North is green in every sense of the word, from its environmental approach down to every single blade of grass. True North is the first Michigan golf course to become a member of Audubon International’s prestigious Silver Signature program, recogniz-
ing a club’s commitment to environmental planning and resource management. If you’re looking to bond with Mother Nature – what golfer isn’t? – True North delivers a superior experience in a stunning setting.

SHANTY CREEK
COMPLETING $10 MILLION IN RENOVATIONS, SHANTY CREEK RESORTS IS NEW MORE THAN EVER! THE NEW LAKEVIEW HOTEL & Conference Center features inspiring views of Lake Bellaire from high atop Summit Mountain and newly renovated guest rooms, suites, public areas, function space and dining venues that showcase Shanty Creek’s hospitality at its finest. With three villages on one 4,500 acre playground, Shanty Creek’s trio of resort villages offers legendary Northwoods hospitality, earning
Shanty Creek Resorts Silver Medalist honors from Golf Digest. Four different golf experiences await visitors: Cedar River Golf Course was carved from 500 acres of hardwoods by PGA tour player Tom Weiskopf. Nationally recognized as a top 100 course, Cedar River is Shanty Creek’s longest play with the largest greens, inviting golfers with wide fairways, dramatic elevation changes and aweinspiring views. The Legend Golf Course was designed by the legend himself – Arnold Palmer; a quintessential golf experience owed to the visionaries at Shanty Creek Resorts. The Legend literally cascades over 600 acres of mountaintops, valleys and sparkling waters. Sporting the tightest of fairways, formidable doglegs and breathtaking natural hazards, The Legend puts golfers in an enviable position – trying to read and play those challenging greens amid the stunning views of Lake Bellaire! Schuss Mountain Golf Course accentuates nature’s splendor on every turn of the course, cutting straight through Northern Michigan hardwoods. Flanked by thick forests, the course creates a natural focus on

distant views of rolling hills, wetlands and wildlife, bringing nature and golfers together for an unforgettable experience. Summit Golf Course sits high above Northern Michigan’s countryside providing golfers a classic, open course that winds grandly across the rolling hills of Shanty Creek Resorts. Sporting wide fairways and a short game that’s challenging around and on the greens, Summit’s faster play is a perfect complement to the strategies of the resort’s other courses. Now more than ever, Shanty Creek Resorts is Northern Michigan’s premier four-seasons resort – with more holes to play, more reasons to stay and more improvements everyday that promise outdoor adventure and memories that will last a lifetime.
BUCKS RUN
THE HEART OF MICHIGAN IS ACCESSIBLE FROM ANY DIRECTION. SO WHAT’S THE DELAY IN MAKING A TEE TIME IN Michigan’s too-often-overlooked mid-section? The Bucks Run Golf Club in Mount Pleasant delivers the scenery of an up-north round of golf without the gas-guzzling drive. You won’t just save money on gas, either. When it comes to the serenity of a lakeside setting, few Michigan courses can match Bucks Run, especially at its $55 to $80 price range. The 34-acre Fisher Lake provides dramatic theatre, coming into play on five holes and affording all those picturesque views from the stylish lodge-style clubhouse. But it is hardly the only place your ball might find a watery grave. The Chippewa River comes into play on seven holes. Thankfully, the 6,765-yard Bucks Run offers the perfect way to keep your ball dry: a five-acre grass range with two large putting greens. Bucks Run takes care of the little things that mean the world to customers, like proper pace of play, course conditioning and quality customer service. Original architect Jerry Matthews redesigned the back nine last year to add even more personality. The
416-yard 15th, once an uphill par 4, now plays as a 516-yard par-5. The change has created a risk-reward scenario for long hitters to go for it in two or lay up to a narrow approach zone. The 475-yard, par-5 16th used to be reachable in two. Now, as a 384-yard par-4, the tee shot is critical with a landing area only 100 feet wide, with a pond on the right and wetland left. The tee shot at No. 17 requires a blast over the Chippewa River to a green filled with humps and hollows. The par-4 18th demands a difficult carry over Fisher Lake to the fairway and then a long, exacting approach. But don’t retreat to the clubhouse just yet. An 18-hole bentgrass putting course, located on an island between the clubhouse and third green, takes up more than two acres. A babbling rock creek separates the nines. The holes are designed to match the championship course, complete with mounds, sand bunkers and fescues. Nine area hotels offer stay-andplay packages, including the Soaring Eagle Casino. Whether you visit the
casino or not, playing Bucks Run is no gamble. Put it on your must-play list … again and again.
