The South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce recently held its tenth edition of the “Women Empowering and Embracing Women Awards”. The Women Empowering and Embracing Women Awards took place with great success in the beautiful Country Club room of the Biltmore Hotel in the city of Coral Gables. One of the honorees was the honorable Miami-Dade County Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, who is the first female mayor of that county.

As usual, during that event, the Man of the Year award is given to a gentleman who has stood out during the year for contributing and participating more in the committee of the ladies-Hispanic Women’s, Society Network-, of the chamber and supporting women in general always. That award was given to Dr. Anthony Cruz, President of Miami Dade College Kendall Campus.

Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce hosted their monthly Membership luncheon with guest speaker Stuart Wyllie, President and CEO of the Graham Companies

On November 16, 2022, the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce held their monthly membership luncheon at the Miami Lakes Hotel. The guest speaker for this month was Stuart Wyllie. Over 50 people were in attendance and ready to hear from the special guest speaker. Chamber members and their guests began to arrive to the hotel around 11:30 am and did some networking while waiting for the luncheon to begin. As the lobby filled with guests, the doors of the ballroom were opened, and everyone was invited in. Guests entered, found seats, and waited for lunch to be served. The Miami Lakes Hotel served a full course lunch to all guests, which was enjoyed while the luncheon began. President Fred Senra began the lunch with the pledge of allegiance and a short prayer. Next, attendees had the opportunity to introduced themselves and give some information about their

business to everyone.

As all the guests wrapped up their introductions, President Senra introduced the guest speaker of this month’s luncheon, Stuart Wyllie, president and CEO of the Graham Companies. The Graham Companies is a privately owned company with 90 years of experience that has positively impacted the local community. Responsible for the creation and development of Miami Lakes, they are a big part of the town to this day. They continue to be involved in the agriculture business with dairy, beef, and pecan farming. Stuart Wyllie is the President and CEO of this amazing, successful company. Joining the team in 1990, he worked in the land development for fourteen years previously. He has many responsibilities in the company, most importantly, development and land transactions.

Mr. Wyllie’s presentation focused on providing guests with a history of the company, how it came to be, and how it has evolved over the many years it has been around. He shared some of the many plans for what’s to come in Miami Lakes, including some new businesses opening very soon. Guests were overjoyed to hear of all the wonderful business development in their town. Stuart Wyllie wrapped up his presentation, and President Fred Senra shared some important announcements with guests. He reminded everyone that the elections for the Chamber’s board of directors are coming up soon and to keep in mind who they would like to see running the Chamber for the next year! The Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce will be hosting their next membership luncheon on Wednesday, December 14 at the Miami Lakes Hotel with guest speaker Manny Cid, Miami Lakes Mayor.

Miami Airport Director Drives Miami-Dade County’s

Largest Economic Engine

Ralph Cutié is a shining example of a firstgeneration immigrant success story. Born and raised in Miami to Cuban émigré parents who met here in the city, Cutié is one of three children (two younger sisters). He has three children himself, two in their 20s, and a teenager, “all of whom are way smarter than me.” He has been married 32 years, and coincidently, has the same number of years in county service. Cutié is also the Aviation Director and Chief Executive Officer of Miami International Airport.

“My first 16 years were with the Miami Dade Transit Agency (now called the Dept of Transportation and Public Works), from 1990 to 2006,” Cutié informed. From there, he spent seven and a half years with the Office of Capital Improvements, which handled the general obligation bond program and other construction projects for the county. Under a previous administration, the department was streamlined into the Internal Services Dept five years into his tenure. After an additional two and half years with ISD, the county executive moved over to the Aviation Department.

“I cut my teeth on construction projects, project management, contracts, scheduling, claims administration,” attested Cutié, an FIU graduate in Bachelor of Science in Construction Management. “My nearly ten years here at Aviation have focused on engineering, construction and facilities management.” Prior to his current post, Cutié served as Assistant Director for Facilities Management and Engineering, overseeing the largest and most diverse division within the county’s Aviation Department.

He became Interim Director of MIA in June of 2021, after the previous director had retired, and was officially appointed as Aviation Director and Chief Executive Officer by Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava in September of that year.

Expectedly, for a man in his position, his days are long. “I’m in the office before seven,” he outlined. “It’s a 24-hour operation here. The first flights begin at 4:30 AM. Even in the middle of the night, there are always people in the terminal. At home, I’m working, answering emails. You’re always on [the clock] with this job. But I make time for my family. At night, after work, my wife and I go out for a jog or to the gym.”

The scope of Cutié’s responsibility is as enormous as it is daunting, in both management and financial terms. “We have 35 to 36,000 employees that come to work here daily,” he stated. “About 1,450 county employees that are under my purview and the other 34,000-plus are airline partners,

cargo partners, tenants, concessionaires; it’s like a small city. Our coordinated relationships with our large government entities, TSA (Transportation Security Administration), FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), CDC (Centers for Disease Control), CBP (U.S. Customs and Border Protection), and Homeland Security are a big part of what makes the airport work.

“We and the Port of Miami are the two biggest economic engines in the county, in that order. We represent about $32 billion in economic impact. We have a symbiotic relationship with the port. What’s good for them is good for us. Most people who cruise out of the port typically fly into our airport. So, when the port is doing well with cruises, that means we’re doing well with passengers.”

The 56-year-old senior executive is also responsible for four other municipal area airports: Miami Executive Airport, Opa Locka Airport, Homestead Airport and Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport in the Everglades. “There are always things going on. Whether it’s with aircraft coming in and out, issues with our checkpoints or parking. It’s never boring. Weekends, I’m not technically here, but I’m always connected with these things,” he added, holding up his cell phone.

The airport is seeing a record number of visitors.

“We are on pace to reach 50 million passengers by the end of 2022,” the director said proudly. “That’s significant because our previous record was 46.2 million in 2019, pre-COVID. And we have a three percent increase expected for 2023.” During the height of the pandemic in 2020, that number fell to 18.5 million. “I was here every day during that difficult period, and it was like a ghost town,” he recalled. “We had an average of 3 or 4,000 passengers a day. The only people in the terminal were mostly janitorial staff.” Helped by the government’s business relief programs, the director is pleased to point out that MIA, unlike other airports nationwide, never had to lay off anyone. Passenger volume bounced back last year to 37.5 million.

The pandemic could not, however, stop three straight years of record-breaking cargo growth for the airport. Cutié attributed the sharp spike to a huge increase in e-commerce, as the general public massively shifted to on-line ordering. “We plan to solidify our position as one of the premier cargo airports in the world,” the chief executive assured. “Ninety percent of all the flowers that enter the country come through MIA. Seventy percent of all the perishables that come into the U.S. come through MIA.”

Ralph Cutié es un brillante ejemplo de una historia de éxito de inmigrante de primera generación. Nacido y criado en Miami de padres cubanos emigrados que se conocieron aquí en la ciudad, Cutié es uno de tres hijos (dos hermanas menores). Él mismo tiene tres hijos, dos en sus 20 y un adolescente, “todos los cuales son mucho más inteligentes que yo”. Ha estado casado por 32 años y, coincidentemente, tiene la misma cantidad de años en el servicio del condado. Cutié también es director de aviación y director ejecutivo del Aeropuerto Internacional de Miami.

“Mis primeros 16 años fueron con la Agencia de Tránsito de Miami Dade (ahora llamada Departamento de Transporte y Obras Públicas), de 1990 a 2006”, informó Cutié. Antes de su puesto actual, Cutié se desempeñó como Subdirector de Administración e Ingeniería de Instalaciones, supervisando la división más grande y diversa dentro del Departamento de Aviación del condado.

Se convirtió en director interino de MIA en junio de 2021, después de que el director anterior se jubilara, y fue nombrado oficialmente director de aviación y director ejecutivo por la alcaldesa del condado de Miami-Dade, Daniella Levine Cava, en septiembre de ese año.

Tenemos una relación simbiótica con el puerto. Lo que es bueno para ellos es bueno para nosotros. La mayoría de las personas que salen del puerto suelen volar a nuestro aeropuerto. Entonces, cuando al puerto le va bien con los cruceros, eso significa que a nosotros nos va bien con los pasajeros”.

El alto ejecutivo de 56 años también es responsable de otros cuatro aeropuertos del término municipal: el Aeropuerto Ejecutivo de Miami, el Aeropuerto de Opa Locka, el Aeropuerto de Homestead y el Aeropuerto de Capacitación y Transición Dade-Collier en los Everglades. “Siempre están pasando cosas. Ya sea por la entrada y salida de aeronaves, problemas con nuestros puntos de control o estacionamiento. Nunca es aburrido. Los fines de semana, técnicamente no estoy aquí, pero siempre estoy conectado con estas cosas”, agregó, sosteniendo su teléfono celular.

El aeropuerto está viendo un número récord de visitantes. “Estamos en camino de alcanzar los 50 millones de pasajeros para fines de 2022”, dijo con orgullo el director. “Eso es significativo porque nuestro récord anterior fue de 46,2 millones en

2019, antes de COVID. Y tenemos un aumento del tres por ciento esperado para 2023”. Durante el apogeo de la pandemia en 2020, ese número se redujo a 18,5 millones. “Estuve aquí todos los días durante ese período difícil y era como un pueblo fantasma”, recordó. “Teníamos un promedio de 3 o 4.000 pasajeros por día. Las únicas personas en la terminal eran en su mayoría personal de limpieza”. Con el socorro de los programas de ayuda comercial del gobierno, el director se complace en señalar que MIA, a diferencia de otros aeropuertos del país, nunca tuvo que despedir a nadie. El volumen de pasajeros se recuperó el año pasado a 37,5 millones. Sin embargo, la pandemia no pudo detener tres años consecutivos de crecimiento récord de carga para el aeropuerto. Cutié atribuyó la alza a un gran aumento en el comercio electrónico, ya que el público en general cambió masivamente a los pedidos en línea. “Planeamos consolidar nuestra posición como uno de los principales aeropuertos de carga del mundo”, aseguró el director ejecutivo. “El noventa por ciento de todas las flores que entran al país vienen por MIA. There are several factors for Miami International Airport’s robust recovery since COVID, according to Cutié. Pent up travel demand and the fact that markets were kept open, especially in Latin America. Three low-cost carriers were added during the pandemic period. (Jet Blue, Southwest and Spirit). Geographic location and weather are other specific attraction draws for the airport.

As the airport is braced to enter its busiest time of the year during the upcoming holiday travel period, it continues to gain in the metrics area of seat capacity— which projects passenger volume—elevating its station among worldwide peers. “MIA is not only the fastest growing airport in the country but also worldwide with a 17% growth increase in seat capacity, with the next closest, Dubai at 8%,” Cutié affirmed, based on an April 2022 industry report. “MIA is the number one airport in the United States for international travelers and tenth in the country in total passengers. We are number 11 in the world in the international passenger arena and twelfth in total passengers among airports around the globe.”

Throughout the interview, Cutié impressively did not require spreadsheets when discussing the immense range of operations and programs and projects he oversees. He has the numbers in his head. “When it comes to cargo, MIA is the number one airport in the country for international freight,” he stated matterof-factly. “In the U.S, we’re number four for mail freight and fifth for total cargo. On a global basis, we’re the ninth-largest airport for international freight. In what’s called in the industry, “total aircraft operations,” which involves all aircraft movement, passengers and cargo, we are number nine among all other airports. Therefore, technically, we are the ninth-busiest airfield in the world.

“The entire terminal and its concourses are 10 million square feet, including 8 ½ million square feet of air-conditioned space, on approximately 3,200 acres of airport land. We have 617 conveyance units—escalators, elevators and moving walks, which constitutes more than half of the county’s 1,200 total conveyance units. We are employing a bathroom renovation program to address the airport’s 447 public restrooms, not counting the bathrooms to which the public does not have access, behind the ticket counters and other places. We currently have stateof-the-art bathrooms completed in the North Terminal.”

The airport is moving forward with advancements in technology, as well. Biometric Boarding (scanned face recognition) and Virtual Queuing (allows people to maintain their place in line without having to be in the actual line) are expected to become operational in the not-too-distant future. Cutié explained his goal is to leverage technology to make things more efficient: “We have a pilot program expected to go in effect, whereby if a unit malfunctions or is on the verge of malfunctioning, it will send out a signal to the vendor and our operation center. Senator René García and Commissioner Eileen Higgins teamed up to host a friendly domino tournament between their districts. Two tournaments were played, one in Little Havana and one in Hialeah, with the winners playing each other at the championship on Saturday, October 29th at Domino Park.

“It’s great to be able to have some friendly competition between our districts and to have some fun with our seniors,” stated Commissioner René García.

Ultimately, District 5 came out victorious and took home the prize. Next time, District 13 will look to bring the trophy back to Hialeah.
