Introduction & Calendar Message from the President Welcome to the Jazzschool 2014 Spring Quarter! And this spring brings some incredibly exciting news:

• • •

Accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) A new institutional name — California Jazz Conservatory World-renowned pianist Benny Green as our artist-in-residence

It’s been said that all good things come in threes. In line with this familiar aphorism, these recent developments are simply groundbreaking. First, accreditation signifies that the institution has met the rigorous artistic, academic and administrative standards set by NASM. Accreditation will soon enable us to participate in U.S. government financial aid programs and will also allow us to admit students from abroad. Second, we’ve adopted an organizational name that best reflects our mission as the only stand-alone conservatory devoted to the study and performance of jazz and related styles of music in the United States. Third, our students will now have the opportunity to learn directly from one of the country’s most revered jazz pianists — Benny Green — an authentic living legend who exemplifies the ultimate in artistic excellence. Our momentum will continue to grow this year, allowing us to bring you and the entire music community the very best in jazz education and performance. Please join us by taking advantage of the many exciting opportunities the California Jazz Conservatory has to offer you this spring! Yours in jazz,

Susan Muscarella President and Dean of Instruction, Calfornia Jazz Conservatory

FACULTY PROFILE

Kenneth Helman Ken Helman is a classically trained pianist, singer and composer. He presently teaches at the CJC and is the composer-in-residence at San Francisco’s Little Opera. Ken graduated from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins and did post-graduate fellowships at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music and Tanglewood. He also studied vocal pedagogy at the Westminster Choir College. As a performer, Ken has appeared as singer and pianist at major venues around the world including Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, the Rainbow Room, Hotel Bayerischer Hof, the Elba Music Festival and the Lensic Theater in Santa Fe. He has worked extensively with Sting on numerous projects for stage and recording, as well as with Jessye Norman, Harvey Fierstein, Han-Na Chang and Elton John. In 2009, Ken released Emerging, an album of original songs and he is currently working on an original musical.

SOME OF KEN’S THOUGHTS ABOUT TEACHING “Everyone is different, and has specific requirements. We all have habits and quirks that only an outside listener can perceive. I work with song repertoire, both for musical thoughts and ideas, and employing the techniques that we’re striving for. It’s very important to be as connected to the lyric as possible. Words matter. They inform much of how you treat the material, both technically and

interpretively. I spend time having each student working toward that connection in the deepest way. It lays the groundwork for how to phrase the material, convey the meaning, and bring your personal stamp to the song. Only then, have you accomplished the work at hand. In order to make ‘the magic’ happen, I feel a safe space needs to be created to experiment, to risk, and to feel the freedom to try new things, without fear or inhibitions. That’s how you find your voice. That’s how you get results. I love to teach as well as to learn. I’ve been teaching in one form or another for 38 years. I’m also a perpetual student, always studying, taking classes of some sort, as well as being a student of yoga for over 20 years. In addition to performing and writing music, this has been my life.”

Introduction Dear JYMP students and parents, I’m typing this letter while listening to the Jazzschool Studio Band record their work at Fantasy Studios, the scene of so many legendary jazz recordings. I’ve really enjoyed my first quarter as the director of the Jazzschool Young Musicians program. The most rewarding part of this job is seeing these young musicians as they rehearse, perform, record and grow together. The energy they bring to their music is fresh and exciting, and it provides hope that the future of creative, artistic music is in good hands. The fall performances of all the youth ensembles at the Jazzschool were inspiring. Over a hundred middle and high school students played over the course of a weekend, and hundreds more friends, family, and peers were on hand to support them. Each group has developed and grown since their first rehearsal and has started to develop its own unique sound — the most exciting result from playing in a group regularly across a whole year. We’re very fortunate to have such strong, unique musical personalities leading and shaping these student combos. Faculty members Dave Eshelman, Michael Zilber, Kasey Knudsen, Rob Ewing, Colin Hogan, Joe Bagale, Sista Kee, Kyra Gordon, Eddie Mendenhall and myself all have years of bandleading, teaching and performing experience — and we love working with young musicians. We also strive to find performing opportunities for the ensembles, where they’ll gain valuable experience on the bandstand. This year, student concerts are scheduled at Yoshi’s Oakland, the Freight and Salvage, the Oakland Asian Cultural Center and of course at the Jazzschool. And, there is an ongoing collaboration with the Sound Room and Jazz in the Neighborhood to feature Jazzschool youth groups on Oakland’s “First Fridays.” A quick word of thanks and kudos to all the parents who provide transportation, lessons and support for this next generation of musicians. It’s definitely a group effort and I’m thankful to be a part of it!

FACULTY PROFILE

Kasey Knudsen

Saxophonist Kasey Knudsen performs widely around the Bay Area and leads a variety of Jazzschool ensembles. We sat down with her recently for a Q&A session. What are some of the projects that you’re professionally involved in? I perform with a number of different projects, both my own and other people’s. I play with the Ben Goldberg School, Fred Frith’s Gravity, Ian Carey Quintet + 1, Michael Coleman’s Enjoyer, The Schimscheimer Family Trio, Aaron Novik’s Cosimo Lissy, the Nathan Clevenger Group, Disappear Incompletely, the Evan Francis Group, The Holly Martins, Lorin Benedict, The Klaxon Mutant All Stars and more! When did you begin teaching, and when did you start teaching at the Jazzschool? I began teaching privately right out of college. I started teaching middle school ensembles at the Jazzschool in 2006 and began teaching high school, adult combos and at the college level a few years later. What do you like best about teaching? I love demystifying improvisation. Playing jazz can feel overwhelming and I love helping people understand it and feel like they have the tools to improve. Do you teach high school and middle school combos differently? Absolutely, it’s very different. High school students are often more self-directed and benefit from making

their own decisions within the ensemble. I give them repertoire that I think is fun and challenging, arrangements ideas, pointers about how to approach improvisation, and then I let them make a lot of their own decisions past that point. With middle school ensembles I take a much more hands on approach. My courses involve a basic introduction to the music, exposure to different styles, and fundamentals such as how to “keep the form,” spell chords, and understand scales.

What advice do you have for young musicians? Listen to as much music as possible and surround yourself with other musicians your age. You will keep each other excited and motivated and that will help keep you practicing! Beyond that, get a good teacher and figure out a good practice routine for yourself. Music teaches you focus, consistency and patience — and all of those things come from having a good practice routine.

THEORY & IMPROVISATION

SOUND ADVICE FOR SAXOPHONE with Marcus Stephens This workshop is designed to help saxophonists develop and refine their approach to sound production. PRE-BIRD: SWING FEELING THEN & NOW with Michael Steinman This workshop is an informal guided tour of the musical life — audio and video — that so richly blossomed before World War II. It’s a way of providing vintage musical experiences that you might not discover on your own. These earlier giants offer insight into the formative influences of today’s jazz icons.

MELODIC MINOR HARMONY with Mark Levine The harmony derived from the melodic minor scale is an essential element of the sound of modern jazz, with its minor-major, lydian dominant, altered and half-diminished chords. This workshop provides an overview of melodic minor scale harmony and its practical applications, as heard in the music of Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Wayne Shorter and other influential jazz composers and improvisers. Sunday June 1, 11 am – 1pm $30 advance • $45 day of workshop Mark Levine is the author of The Jazz Piano Book, The Jazz Theory Book, and The Drop 2 Book. DIMINISHED AND WHOLE-TONE — ARTIFICIAL SCALES IN JAZZ with Mark Levine Many jazz musicians draw a blank when confronted with diminished or whole-tone chords. Sure, you may know how to spell them, but it doesn’t sound like jazz! This workshop addresses all aspects of the two chords including chord theory, scale theory, the various functions of the two chords in jazz, four-note voicings, and voice leading. Mark Levine also explores how jazz greats such as Bill Evans, Duke Ellington, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and Barry Harris effortlessly used these much misunderstood chords.
