SUMMER 2015 YOUTH CAMPS

Six 1-week sessions June 22–August 7

ADULT CLASSES

17 different disciplines! June 29–August 23

DIRECTOR’S Message Dear Friends, Summer is a great time to be at The Crucible. On Monday, June 22, we begin six solid weeks of youth summer camps! Our studios are full weekdays, with hundreds of young makers ages 8 to 17 working on projects as diverse as robotics, welding and glass flameworking. Evenings and weekends our studios are buzzing with activity, with students ages 16 and up exploring their own creative instincts. Although summer is our shortest session (June 29-August 23), it’s jam-packed with an incredible array of options across all departments. There are several brand-new classes, including Juggling (pg. 10); Fused Glass Decals (pg. 12); the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair (pg. 12); Drawing for the Absolute Beginner (pg. 16); and Beginning Acrylic Painting (pg. 16). Summer youth camps are open for enrollment right now, while summer adult class sign-ups begin Friday, June 5 for Crucible members and Friday, June 19 for the general public. Members get the satisfaction of supporting a vital East Bay arts resource — plus, they save 10% on tuition fees and get first choice of courses and dates. Early Birds who register by Sunday, July 5 take an additional 10% off, for a combined savings of 20% off. Enroll now to take advantage of these substantial benefits! Take a free tour to see what we’re all about! Tours take place every Tuesday night at 6pm, and every 1st and 3rd Saturday at 3pm, except during holidays and special events. I joined The Crucible team last July, and every day I am still amazed by the spirit and enthusiasm of our instructors and students, eager to explore and to create. I’ve learned as much observing classes and speaking with our students as I have in the office. Last year it was a fun, inspiring, and creative summer for me. This year, it’s your turn! Please include The Crucible in your summer plans. Sincerely,

David C. Miller Executive Director

ABOUT Us

Founded in 1999, The Crucible is a nonprofit arts education organization that fosters a collaboration of arts, industry and community. We aim to inspire creative exploration and expression through hands-on arts education and experiences. A hub of innovation built around the industrial arts, The Crucible serves as a catalyst for personal growth and community transformation. At The Crucible, forges roar, sparks fly, glass bends, neon glows and creativity explodes! Over 85 celebrated faculty and industrial arts experts teach nearly 175 courses and workshops to around 5,000 students a year at our impressive 56,000 square foot West Oakland facility, making The Crucible the largest institution of its kind on the west coast. Our programs include ADULT CLASSES as well as our award winning SUMMER CAMP and other youth programs, in which kids 8-17 gain memorable learning experiences and make new friends.

and WEEKLONG COURSES. We also offer “TASTERS,” to get a quick overview, as well as WEEKEND INTENSIVES and MASTER CLASSES. The Crucible features a low faculty-to-student ratio (often 1:6 or better), which fosters a hands-on teaching approach. Our pricing structure includes both tuition and studio fees, as well as all the materials, tool access and safety training that students need. There are no hidden costs, however some classes may require additional materials as noted. Many leading Bay Area businesses participate in our TEAM BUILDING WORKSHOPS, encouraging their employees to learn and collaborate in new ways. These take place in a single day and range from 2 to 8 hours in length (see page 6). The Crucible provides two special options for continuing access to our studio and tools. STUDIO RENTALS offer students a chance to continue their hands-on practice in areas where they are currently taking or have taken a class. Our CREATE program (CRucible Expanded Access to Tools & Equipment) gives members a chance to work in the studio area of their choice during regular studio hours, with access to professional-level equipment that would otherwise be unavailable to most homebased makers (see page 7).

Using metal, wood, stone, glass, clay, leather and many other materials, Crucible courses have something for everyone — from novices to experienced artists and trades people. We offer a noncompetitive, open atmosphere for people with diverse interests and backgrounds. Our instructors have extensive experience and a passion for what they teach, and make learning industrial arts fun and unintimidating. And our students agree: 75% of those who take a Crucible class return for another, and another.

The Crucible produces a wide variety of innovative performances, featuring highly trained craft and industrial artists. Throughout the year we also offer daytime OPEN HOUSE events for the whole family, as well as FIRESIDE LOUNGE evening gatherings.

Crucible classes give you training and support to succeed. Most classes feature project-based lessons that allow you to create a finished piece. We utilize a variety of formats, including 10-WEEK, 5-WEEK

Take a FREE TOUR to see what we’re all about! Tours take place every Tuesday night at 6pm, and every 1st and 3rd Saturday at 3pm, except during holidays and special events.

Volunteer at The Crucible

Gifts to The Crucible’s Annual Fund fuel our fire, providing youth and adult scholarships and free programs for local public schools. A gift of $25 buys safety equipment for a student, while $300 sponsors a youth in our summer camp program. Just $4,000 brings 300 children on a Crucible field trip! Every gift matters, and donors giving $75 or more to the Annual Fund also receive complimentary membership.

Volunteer in our studio, office, or at special events, and earn discounts on classes. No experience or special skills are needed. Over 11,000 hours are contributed each year, and we’re always happy to welcome new people to our community.
