Halloween (Celtic New Year) As well as having its more serious side. It's the time when we dress up as witches, vampires, and werewolves etcetera. A time of parties and tricks and treats. It is the time also when the veil between this world and the other world becomes thinner, and a time to connect again with our ancestors. The other name for this time of year is Samhain {Pronounced Sowain} One of the old traditional games for this time of year, was apple bobbing. Some apples are placed in a bowl of water, young ladies try to get a apple from the water without using their hands. Who ever succeeded in getting the apple, would be the first to marry. How ever you celebrate, enjoy, and may the blessings of the cosmos be with you By Marie from Akasha

City and Port of Bristol Bowls Club Sunday 4th September saw 43bowlers and supporters set off to enjoy five days of sun, sea and bowling at Eastbourne. Staying at the excellent Langham Hotel, there was a different green to bowl on each day. The first one was Eastbourne Parade and on the following days games were enjoyed at Newhaven, Rottingdean, Bexhill and finally back in Eastbourne to play Royal Sovereign. It was great to meet bowlers from a different part of the country. Also very good were the views of the East Sussex countryside with its rolling hills and also the coastline. A number of people made use of the local bus service to visit Brighton --- some even venturing onto the British Airways i360 for views of Brighton from 400 feet up. For others a swim or a paddle in the sea at Eastbourne or a leisurely cup of tea and cake on the beautifully refurbished pier. There was even a firework display to be enjoyed one evening. Bowling tours are much more about enjoyment than the result of games. Meeting people --- like the 90 year old President at Newhaven ---- and talking about bowling over a drink at the end of the game is all a big part of going on tour. The final evening at The Langham Hotel saw a gala dinner and presentations to a number of people. As always there was a prize for the best scoring lady (Janet Reed) and best scoring gentleman (David HInksman). There were prizes for the best rink each day. Jill Hinksman lead the tour, taking it on from Lis Davies when she became ill, and she was thanked by one and all for continuing with it and for making it a success. The greatest amusement of the week surrounded the small teddy bears presented each evening to the four bowlers on the worst loosing rink that day.
Following on from returning on Friday from the Tour was Finals Days on Saturday and the following Tuesday. The competitions were keenly fought and the winners were: Ladies Pairs Dawn Evans & Ray Cook Ladies Singles Dee Crawley Ladies 2 Woods Jill Hinksman Mens Pairs Trevor Scanion & Ken Davies Mens Singles John Conroy Mens 2 Woods Bill Hatherall Mixed Pairs Trevor Scanion & Dawn Evans Sid Holmes Handicap Trevor Scanion Bill Deakin Novice Phil Cormack Jack Ashton Triples Bill Hatherall, Dave Hinksman & Matthew Price This year’s Club League title was once again won by the Exiles. The Club league Cup was won by The Marvels The final big day of the 2016 season was Presidents Day on Sunday 18th September. It was blessed with fine weather and It started with a spider ---- whose wood comes closest to the jack in the centre of the green wins --- and this year’s winner was David Garrod. This was followed by a game between the Ladies and the Gentlemen. Followed by an excellent barbeque presented by Bill Cook. The result was a win for the gentlemen. There was a debutant bowler on the ladies side ---Julie Looker who only started bowling a few weeks ago. Amongst those watching procedings were John Brailey, a previous president and Lis Davies, making a welcome return after serious illness. Thanks go to Warburtons for their support of this very enjoyable event. It is time to look forward to events that take place out of season. The AGM will take place on Tuesday 25th October . Saturday November 5th is the date of the first indoor game against local opposition at the City and County Arena. Friday November 25th is the date of the Dinner and Presentation evening at Shirehampton Golf Club. Into 2017 and at the end of January it will once again be time to set off to Torquay and the Toorak Hotel for five enjoyable days of indoor bowling. The summer tour will see a return to Bournemouth.

Bristol-could be like Venice? Metrobus routes across Bristol are still causing huge hold -ups whether you are goIng through the Centre, up the M32 or around the City's suburbs in the south. As I was driving my daughter into work this morning and held up by aforementioned Metrobus roadworks, I got to thinking how pleasant Bristol could be if we were travelling by water as they do in Venice. I went to Venice recently for a long weekend and it was so great to travel into the city by waterbus. Really relaxing, as opposed to the frustrations of travelling by road. Then I remembered that the River Frome runs under the Centre. Indeed, the Police could come out of their new Police Station and get into a speedboat with sirens as the police do in Venice - very exciting.
But, just as Venice is proud of its historical architecture, so should Bristol; indeed more so as we have so little left after the blitz. A kayaker I know has been under the city via the Frome and says that at least 7 medieval bridges are still in existence under the roads, over the river and culverts, plus lots of ancient stonework. So here is my suggestion: stop Metrobus, open the river put on lots of river buses and taxis. It would probably be far cheaper and certainly reduce road rage. By Eileen `Means

Our special news for this month We are delighted to let everyone know that our new Priest in Charge, the Rev Helen Johnson is to be licensed on Monday, 17th October at 7.30pm at a service led by The Right Reverend Bishop Mike Hill, Bishop of Bristol & The Venerable Christine Froude, Archdeacon. We are looking forward to this special occasion and to working with Helen as she leads our parish in the years to come. On Saturday 22nd October we shall be holding our Christmas Gift Fayre in the church from 10.00 am until 12.00 noon when there will be beautiful crafts made by our church Craft Group – a very talented group of people who meet in church each Tuesday afternoon from 2pm-4pm. They always welcome new members so if you enjoy craft – knitting, sewing, embroidery, card making or any other craft, bring your craft along and join them. They will be delighted to share their skills with you and will welcome you sharing your talent with them. It’s also a chance for a chat and a cup of tea! In addition at the Fayre there will be gifts, paper, cards and Christmas items. We also have a Festive Food Fayre with food gifts, preserves, cakes and more each year and this year this is on Saturday 26th November.
On Saturday 5th November at 3.00 pm we will be holding one of our most attended services of the year and for all of us a very valued one. This is our Annual Memorial Service for those who have lost loved ones, whether recently or many years ago. This is a short service when we focus on our memories, our sadness and just take time to remember. There are forms available in church now which you can pop in and pick up and fill in with the names of loved ones you wish to be added to the prayer list, which will be read out during the service and to let us know that you will be attending. This is a lovely service which includes filling in remembrance cards which will then be put on our Tree of Light which is lit at a special service at 6pm on Sunday 27th November and will stay on out Tree of Light throughout the Advent and Christmas period. We welcome all to come along and share these times with us. Our Harvest Appeal is drawing to a close and we have had lots of fun and fellowship as well as raising money. We’ll let you know the final total but we are over £2000 now thanks to everyone’s generosity. This money will be shared between Hop, Skip & Jump (Bristol) & Paul’s Place. More news next month!

10 top tips for the winter As winter approaches 1st Gear has cold weather driving tips and a few hints to encourage car longevity and reliability, during the winter months. 1. Prior to making a cold start in sub-zero temperatures, leave the ignition on for approximately five seconds, before activating the starter motor. This will allow fuel pumps time to pressurise and the car’s electrical system will have the chance to complete any diagnostics check first, saving the battery the extra stress of performing these tasks while it has to turn the engine over. 2. During starting, depress the clutch pedal. This ensures that the starter motor does not have to rotate the gearbox shafts within cold and thick transmission oil. The result is less stress on the battery and starter. Once the engine has started, release the clutch pedal slowly.
6. If you cover many short journeys, it is possible that your engine never gets the chance to warm up fully during winter. If your average journey length is under a few miles, take your car for an extended drive at least once a fortnight, at speeds in excess of 45mph, assuming the conditions are safe enough to do so. This will give the battery more chance to recharge and, if fitted, will allow the particulate filter to regenerate on diesel cars. 7. Ensure that the engine coolant contains anti-freeze strength of between 30% and 50%. If the concentration is too low, the engine could freeze. If too high, the effectiveness of the solution to disperse heat is minimised. 8. Keep the screen wash bottle topped up and use the right concentration of solution. Driving with an empty bottle is illegal. 9. Be very wary of driving through deep water. On many engines, the air intake is located low down and, should any water be sucked into the engine, severe damage is likely. Similarly, allowing flood water to soak the carpets could be enough to ruin the electric components that are located on or near the floor-pan.
3. Never rev the engine, by ‘blipping’ the throttle, immediately after a cold start. When cold, engine oil takes longer to reach the moving parts and so revving the engine needlessly will increase wear rates, as well as wasting fuel. Never run the engine in an enclosed space, the exhaust gases are still poisonous even on the most modern of vehicles. 4. Engine oil has to be at an optimum temperature to offer the fullest protection. Therefore increase engine revs and load progressively as the engine warms. Note that lubricating oil takes longer to reach its ideal working temperature than coolant does. 5. Turn off any electrical accessories as soon as you do not need them. Leaving high-current sapping items engaged, such as heated rear windows, mirrors and seats, deprives the battery of current that could be used to recharge it.
10. Tyre pressures will reduce as the external temperature drops and you should check them at least once-a-week. Running under-inflated tyres will not enhance grip either. Although the minimum legal tread depth is 1.6mm, tread that has fallen to below 2.0mm will have seriously-reduced grip in wet conditions.

Stay bright this coming winter Now we're at the tail end of Summer, things are going to start winding down. Pretty soon you'll be leaving for work or driving to the post office to cash that all important giro and it'll be dark; now is the time to start thinking about visibility. If you own a drill, I have a solution for you. I work at Motaman in Bedminster and for the last few weeks I've asked each customer who purchased a headlight restoration kit to email me what they thought of the results.
