Mayor Rees is finding it hard to balance the books GOVERNMENT
Cast your mind back to the Mayoral referendum, we were told by Government ministers, that if Bristol voted for a Mayor then lots of extra money and powers would be coming our way. We were also told that our Mayor would sit on a Downing Street committee with other Mayors and the Prime Minister to push forward plans for Bristol. But just like the Brexit promises they have turned out to be all spin and no substance. The issues that faced Bristol before a Mayor, still face us today, the poor transport system, congestion and pollution and inequality between the richer parts of Bristol and the rest.
The Mayor has not been given extra money as promised and we are now faced with the prospect of 1,000 Council workers losing their jobs as Marvin Rees struggles to balance the books. Many now worry about how the Council will keep even basic services going with 15% of the work force being cut as it tries to find an extra ÂŁ29m in savings.
Of course our newly elected Mayor made no mention of these massive cuts in his recent election campaign. This all comes after a major refurbishment of the Council House (sorry I am not calling it City Hall!) to consolidate office accommodation, which was suppose to save money, but has not. The Bristol Post also reported that the outgoing Chief Executive Nicola Yates was paid off to the tune of ÂŁ196k by Mayor Rees, which I am sure those facing redundancy will be shocked by. Not to mention that he brought in one of Jeremy Corbyn's spin Doctors from London on a nice big salary.
There is no doubt that local Councils have borne the brunt of the recession, its an easy hit for the Government. But my worry with our new Mayor and his Corbynista spin Doctor is that they will want to turn this into an ideological battle, placing the vulnerable and our Council staff in the frontline against Government cuts. I will join with anyone to ask for more money for our City, but would expect the Mayor to do all he can to protect our frontline services and staff. Councillor Jos Clark Liberal Democrat Brislington West Ward

Learning and practising Bristol Fashion ladies’ barbershop chorus club is working hard at the moment in preparation for our national competition at the end of October. In addition to our weekly rehearsal time of two-and-ahalf hours at Four Acres Academy on a Thursday evening, we are expected to work at home, learning notes and words, and practising choreography, “the moves”. The only way you can do any choreographed movement while singing is to make sure you know the song by heart so that you are completely free to move about. Of course, these days we have lots of technology to help us with all aspects of our performance. Those of us who read music may prefer to learn the song from the score, whether it’s in print or on a phone or iPad. Others rely on recorded teach tracks to learn their voice part. We even have recordings of the other three parts so that we can practise where our particular part fits in to the harmony. This is the sort of work we’re expected to do at home, and with experience you learn that it’s also helpful to sing your part against one of the others in duet, as well. And videos of the chorus in rehearsal help us to practise the moves. So we get plenty of help with learning to learn. In performance Bristol Fashion singers don’t generally stand in sections according to voice part, so you may find when singing that you are actually part of a barbershop quartet with the other three voices immediately around you. This helps you to hear the harmonies and adjust your voice accordingly. Sometimes making the note just a tiny bit higher or lower will help a chord to sound right. Our music team, our Musical Director Craig Kehoe and the leaders of the voice sections, then put a lot of work into checking accuracy of singing, breathing and tone, to make sure we’re actually singing what the arranger of the music wrote in the way that Craig wants to interpret the musical and emotional content of the song. They also do a lot of work on singing technique for individuals and groups.
In addition to all this, we are lucky enough to have regular coaching sessions throughout the year from the highly qualified judges, coaches and other chorus directors in our national organisation. For some strange reason, it’s very easy to get into bad habits in singing, but our experts in the chorus and our coaches from outside make sure that we each make as good a sound as possible and that the combined sound is unified, pleasant and even exciting to listen to. If you want to hear what we sound like (and see some of our stage costumes) have a look at our video on YouTube with a selection of excerpts from our repertoire: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=XXQjApGN_WA&feature=youtu.be or on our website at http://www.bristol-fashion.org.uk/bookus/listen The video also features photos of some of our smaller groups, and lovely pictures of our mother-and-daughter pairs of members like Rachel and Ruth (right). And who knows, you might recognize a friend or neighbour who could tell you more about singing in the chorus and invite you to come along and join us. Special congratulations to Craig, our Director, who after 3 years training has just qualified as a barbershop singing judge!

Bristol-could be like Venice? Metrobus routes across Bristol are still causing huge hold -ups whether you are goIng through the Centre, up the M32 or around the City's suburbs in the south. As I was driving my daughter into work this morning and held up by aforementioned Metrobus roadworks, I got to thinking how pleasant Bristol could be if we were travelling by water as they do in Venice. I went to Venice recently for a long weekend and it was so great to travel into the city by waterbus. Really relaxing, as opposed to the frustrations of travelling by road. Then I remembered that the River Frome runs under the Centre. Indeed, the Police could come out of their new Police Station and get into a speedboat with sirens as the police do in Venice - very exciting.
But, just as Venice is proud of its historical architecture, so should Bristol; indeed more so as we have so little left after the blitz. A kayaker I know has been under the city via the Frome and says that at least 7 medieval bridges are still in existence under the roads, over the river and culverts, plus lots of ancient stonework. So here is my suggestion: stop Metrobus, open the river put on lots of river buses and taxis. It would probably be far cheaper and certainly reduce road rage. By Eileen `Means

What is dry eye? Dry Eye is when damage to the tear glands occurs resulting in too few natural tears being produced. Without tears, the eye becomes very dry and uncomfortable, and makes the eyes more susceptible to infection, conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers. Dark pigmentation may also develop due to new blood vessels growing on the surface of the eye. Dry Eye is one of the most common eye problems we see as vets, and affects as many as 1 in 22 dogs.
For the majority of cases, Dry Eye is a lifelong condition requiring daily treatment. If left untreated, the dog will experience pain and discomfort, and the disease could lead to permanent blindness. A simple eye ointment is available to treat Dry Eye, which can increase the amount of tear production, keeping the eyes lubricated and much more comfortable.
Symptoms of Dry Eye in dogs can include uncomfortable eyes (your dog may blink excessively, rub its eyes or try to keep its eyes closed), eyes are red and inflamed, discharge from the eyes, dry looking eyes, frequent conjunctivitis, eye infections or corneal ulcers, dark pigment or prominent blood vessels on the surface of the eyes.
Diagnosing Dry Eye is quick and painless so book your dog in to see one of our nurses for a FREE test. You will also be entitled to regular discounts for treatment if you book in before 30th November 2016.
Dry Eye can affect all breeds at any age, however, certain breeds can be more prone to developing the condition, such as Cocker Spaniels, Shih Tzus, Bulldogs, Pugs, Yorkshire Terriers, Lhasa Apsos, Westies, King Charles Cavalier Spaniels and English Bull Terriers.

Sarah’s exceptional success celebrated at Slimming HQ Local weight loss expert, Sarah Bryant, is celebrating again this year after being recognised for the exceptional work she does to support people in South Brsitol achieve their dream weight. She was one of around 100 high-achieving Team Developers invited to Slimming World’s ‘Team Developer Thank You Day’, at the organisation’s head office in Alfreton, Derbyshire. Sarah is a slimming Consultant for the Hengrove and Whitchurch Slimming World groups and also one of the UK’s leading Team Developers, meaning that as well as managing her own group as a self-employed franchisee, she is doing a great job of managing other Consultants in South Bristol to ensure excellent service right across the area. As part of the day, Sarah was invited to discuss best practice and share her tips on delivering a first-class weight management service to ensure fantastic weight losses and members’ success. She also shared ideas for building and managing successful local teams. In the afternoon the guests were invited to take part in a workshop, hosted by Slimming World’s Director of Field Operations, Lisa Salmon, and were treated to a healthy banquet in a pop-up marquee. Sarah says: "It was honour to be invited to the special day at Slimming World HQ - when the event invite dropped through my letterbox I got goosebumps! The day itself was just so Inspirational from start to finish. To have had the opportunity to meet and share ideas with other top-performing weight loss experts and managers was an experience I’ll never forget. I left the day absolutely brimming with tips and ideas, and there’s no doubt the insight will enable me to improve the support I give to other Consultants in the area, so that anyone who attends Slimming World in Bristol, including the members who attend my Slimming World group each week, get the very best possible service and support to achieve their weight loss dreams.
"I know what it’s like to struggle with your weight, and having lost 2 1/2 stone as a Slimming World member myself after joining in 2009, I also understand what a huge difference the right kind of support can make to your chances of achieving long-term success. There are so many fad diets around, so being able to tell people that they can lose weight without going hungry and while enjoying everyday foods - like pasta, rice, potatoes, fruit and vegetables, lean meat, poultry and fish, and they can find new ways to get active that don’t have to involve going to the gym or taking part in team sports, is a great thing." "I feel so passionate about helping people to change their lives by learning new healthy habits, and to be able to keep excess weight off for life. Having the chance to get together with other high-achieving Consultants from across the country to share ideas and experiences is yet another example of the superb support that we get as Slimming World franchisees. My job is flexible and rewarding, and although I’m self-employed I feel wholly supported. I’m so proud to be part of Slimming World – the UK’s favourite weight loss company!" adds Sarah. To join a local group either pop along or give Sarah a call on 07879 443888.

Driving while on your mobile phone is as bad as drink driving and the penalty is just as bad Modern life means that the mobile phone is a basic requirement. The user can be contacted at any time, can get assistance in an emergency and can stay in touch with anyone when anywhere on the globe.
Using a mobile phone can mean many things; it is not just restricted to calls. Mobile phone usage also includes reading or responding to texts, being logged into the Internet, pictures and using the phone camera. Hands free kits were invented to counteract the problem of driving using mobile phones. However, recent studies have labeled the hand free phone accessory is just as dangerous. The hands free kit is equally distracting, and though it is not prohibited in many countries, it should not really be used. If it is completely necessary, then the call should be kept brief and any emotionally stressful or distracting calls should be ended immediately. Although the hands free kit is allowed, it can still be used as evidence to prosecute if considered a cause for a road accident.
Travel plays an important role in mobile phone use, particularly in the world of business. Excellent deals can be cut whilst on the move and there need never be anther office crisis. It is generally agreed that the mobile phone has a positive impact on modern life. However, cell phone usage can also have its down side. To use a mobile phone whilst driving is extremely dangerous yet many people choose to drive and make or answer calls. It is important that people become more aware of the effects of using a phone whilst driving to help prevent further accidents from happening. The importance of the matter is being slowly reflected in laws, with outcomes ranging from fines, to detrimental effect upon licenses, and even imprisonment. To use a mobile phone whilst driving put the driver four times more at risk of a crash. This means they are four time more likely to injure or kill themselves or another person. Recent research has revealed that using a mobile phone whilst driving is even more dangerous than drink driving. Studies show that responses are 50% slower than normal when using a mobile phone, and 30% worse than under the influence of alcohol. The reason behind this is the distraction. Using a mobile phone can create visual, auditory, physical and mental distractions. Distractions to this degree have a series of possible effects. When using a mobile phone a driver is less likely to notice road signs, is more likely to drive too close to others, and find it difficult to maintain a regular speed so display erratic driving.
To stay safe, the best action you can take is to take notice of laws and never use your mobile phone whilst driving. This includes using it to even look up numbers or check the time. a momentary lapse in concentration could have fatal results. Turn your mobile phone off and use the voicemail messaging facility as this encourages you to check and use only when safely parked. Remember, even if you are in slow moving heavy traffic; do not use your cell phone as weather conditions and unexpected events can still cause an accident. Leave any received texts until later, and never try to send one whilst driving. Pull over if any text or call is vital. If you use your mobile device for work, then make use of use government guidelines. The increased problem of driving whilst using a mobile phones has caused government initiatives and information services to spring up all over the world. And finally , be equally vigilant with others; hang up is you call someone who is driving.

Kids set for Jurassic Perk as CBeebies favourite signs up for rap show at the world’s biggest inflatable obstacle course Young thrillseekers taking part in the world’s biggest inflatable obstacle course are set for a Jurassic PERK when CBeebies star Andy Day puts on an exclusive Dino Raps show for them. Andy, star of ‘Andy’s Prehistoric Adventures’, will be one of the main attractions at Gung-Ho! Spooktacular, as well as obstacles including Europe’s tallest inflatable slide as the world’s biggest inflatable obstacle. The event, at Ashton Gate, Bristol, on Saturday 29th October, will feature a fireworks display spooky, kid-friendly Halloween activities as well as ‘spooks’ around the 5k course. Andy, who will be performing tracks, among others, from his album ‘Andy and the Odd Socks’, said: “It should be great fun. It is a different take on Gung-Ho! and what is one of my favourite times of year, and to be performing in Bristol makes it extra special. “I have lived here for five years and see it as my home town now and I love performing here and getting involved with different things. “My tracks have had a lot of hits online and are loads of fun. They are really easy to join in with, are educational and interactive.
“Hopefully I’ll have the kids – and their parents – rapping along after no time at all.” Andy, who took part in Gung-Ho!’s recent visit to Windsor, added: “I thought the event was absolutely great. There was an incredible atmosphere with people of all ages taking part. “For me personally, it was like being a kid again! I came with my nieces and they had a great time, too. “It was so much fun - I’ll try and have another go at the course when it comes to Bristol, as well as doing my stuff on stage!” After the fireworks, at 7pm, the event takes on a darker side as runners will slip and slide across the obstacles, including a giant all pit and labyrinth, while being chased by ZOMBIES. Up to 5,000 people are able to take part in the run – GungHo!’s first in the city – with space for another 5,000 spectators to enjoy Bristol’s biggest fireworks display of the year. Tickets are on sale to take part in the entire evening, or just to attend the Halloween celebrations and fireworks.

CBeebies co-star Alex Winters is the brains behind Gung-Ho! and can’t wait to bring it to Bristol for the first time. He said: “It was really important to me that this be an event that everyone can take part in. I have so many amazing memories of Halloween and of fireworks displays when I was young and I want others to have the best time they could ever imagine.
“All the early activities will be geared towards children, with nothing too scary for them. Getting Andy on board is fantastic and I’m sure he will be a massive hit. “He took part in Gung-Ho! in Windsor and absolutely loved it, and I’m so glad he’s back! His Prehistoric Adventures is such a popular show and his Dino Raps are amazing, I’m sure everyone will love him! “Then, after 7pm things get a bit spookier, when, among other things, runners get chased round the course by zombies!
“I am a huge zombie geek and since we came up with Gung-Ho! have been desperate to get them on the course – and now it will finally happen!” Alex came up with the idea for an inflatable obstacle course while sat in front of the TV watching an episode of Ninja Warrior, and that idea spawned Gung-Ho!’s first three events in 2015. Their latest ‘Spooktacular’ event was announced days after Gung-Ho!’s latest visit to Windsor, Liverpool, where thousands of thrill-seekers young and old slipped and slid across obstacles at Stanley Park. Gung-Ho! Nottingham took place on Saturday, the 12th event of this year, where the number of people to have conquered the unique obstacle course topped the 50,000 mark.

Halloween (Celtic New Year) well as having its more serious side. It's the time when we dress up as witches, vampires, and werewolves’ etcetera. A time of parties and tricks and treats. It is the time also when the veil between this world and the other world becomes thinner, and a time to connect again with our ancestors. The other name for this time of year is Samhain {Pronounced Sowain} One of the old traditional games for this time of year, was apple bobbing. Some apples are placed in a bowl of water, young ladies try to get a apple from the water without using their hands. Who ever succeeded in getting the Apple, would be the 1st to marry. How ever you celebrate, enjoy, and may the Blessings of the Cosmos be with you By Marie from Akasha
