Let’s welcome our New councillor for Brislington West .. GOVERNMENT
The dust has now settled on the local elections and there is a real feeling of change in the air. Gone is George Ferguson, who turned out to be a rather divisive figure. He thought that being an ‘Independent’ Mayor placed him above any sort of accountability. Let’s hope that the Labour Mayor Marvin Rees will reach out to all those who want the best for our City. Although it’s early days he has fulfilled one of his election promises to give places in his cabinet to Councillors from all the parties represented on the Council.
As we all know the Council faces some very big financial challenges in the years ahead. Whilst the building of the Arena enjoys widespread support, there are still some very important details to iron out. The whole issue of stopping people turning right near the "Three Lamps" junction is something that desperately needs to be resolved. In addition more overflow parking will be needed at those times of the year when the Arena is very busy. Then there is the whole issue of residents parking permits, I believe those directly affected by the Arena should not have to pay for a permit. I have arranged to meet with the Mayor to discuss these and other important local issues such as the future of Wick Road Library, the John Peer building redevelopment and getting Stockwood Lane open throughout the year by sorting out the drainage. If you feel there is something that could be done to improve our part of South Bristol then please let me know.
Liberal Democrats Councillor Brislington West Jos Clark

Slimming World’s new recipe book is just for you! The fast pace of life today is no excuse to let healthy eating fall by the wayside, says a local Slimming World Consultant. Sarah Bryant, who runs Slimming World groups in Whitchurch and Hengrove, is encouraging people to make a little more time for themselves – and their health – with the help of Slimming World’s latest recipe book, Meals for One.
Meals for One treats readers to a collection of 60 super-satisfying single-serving dishes – from light bites like Lemon and Prawn Crab Pot and a Quick Chicken Noodle Soup, to magnificent mains such as Eggy Chip Bake, King Prawn Dhansak and Chipotle Steak with Sweet Potato Chips. Even better, when friends or family are eating with you too, it’s easy to increase the amounts to feed a crowd.
She says: "Life is busy and hectic nowadays and I’m sure we’ve all called up our local takeaway just to get something on the table – especially if it’s only yourself you need to worry about that day! Looking after yourself and healthy eating shouldn’t be a chore though, so Meals for One has been designed to help you fall back in love with food and cooking. It’s packed full of quick and easy recipes that are – as the name suggests – perfect for when you’re only cooking for one." Slimming World’s Meals for One has been created in response to huge demand, as slimmers look for ways to fit Slimming World’s famous Food Optimising plan into their lives in as many ways as possible. She continues: "Lots of people tell us they struggle to stay on track with slimming when they only have to prepare a meal for themselves, whether that is because they live alone or because the rest of the household isn’t eating with them for one reason or another. Many can find it a challenge to adapt recipes for four or simply struggle to motivate themselves to go to the effort of cooking just for one.
What’s more, there’s an inventive chapter on batch cooking featuring three ‘master’ recipes, which takes a staple dish (such as BBQ Pulled Chicken) and shows the reader three clever ways to enjoy it, so readers will never be bored by what’s on their plates. You’ll also find easy puds like Blackberry Eton Mess and a Chocolate and Coconut Soufflé to give any meal the perfect finish.
"The brilliant thing about Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan though is just how flexible it is – it fits into members’ lifestyles rather than them having to fit around them, as is so often the case with weight loss plans. Members satisfy their appetite on a huge variety of satisfying, filling foods freely – and can use them to create a range of delicious meals, whether catering for a crowd or just ‘for one’."
It’s so easy to pull together a delicious dinner from Meals for One. Sarah says: – it’s perfect for those times when you’re desperate to put your feet up and enjoy some alone time! If it leaves you wanting more, everyone’s welcome at any local Slimming World group. For more information including more delicious recipes visit slimmingworld.co.uk or call Sarah on 07879 443888

Narrow down the dealership
Welcome to our new section each month called 1st Gear! Here we will give you information on new cars, old classics, advice, offers, reviews, tech and more each month.
Guide to buying a new or used vehicle Buying a quality used car or van is not as difficult as it may appear. Not all car dealers are out there to sell you a lemon, or to force you to buy services which you may never use. However, you must do your homework before you step onto any dealership to ensure you are fully prepared to negotiate with the dealership to get the best possible deal. Consider these tips when planning to purchase your next used car. They are not in any particular order but you should pay close attention to each one of them. Determine your budget Before you visit a dealership to test drive a car, consider your spending limit, based on your ability to pay now and in the future. Often, during the sales process, buyers end up purchasing a vehicle that is beyond their budget. So, make sure that you are firm as to how much you want to spend, how much financing you need, how much monthly payment you will be able to handle, and how much down payment you can afford.
Use social media sites, like Facebook, Bing, and Google Plus, to do research on local dealerships. See what people are saying about the dealership, its sales staff, after-sales customer service, and the way a dealership handles a complaint. You can also use sites like www.cardealerreviews.co.uk to read comments and feedback from customers. You should also ask your friends for referrals and their experience with local dealerships. Nothing comes close to personal experience. If you do decide to visit a dealership, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Bring someone with you If you feel intimidated by the car salesperson, then it may be a good idea to take a friend with you to help out during the test drive, finalizing your selection, and price negotiations. Be aware of add-ons that the car salesperson may try to sell you. Don’t be afraid to negotiate and say no when the price is outside of your budget. Don’t be afraid to walk away If not all of your expectations are met, walk away. Even if you feel you are ready to buy, we recommend you take a night to sleep on your decision and make sure it is the vehicle you really want. Discuss the car, its price, financing costs and other details with your family and friends. Review other dealerships’ websites to see how your selection compares to other vehicles. There is no need to rush. A smart dealer will always have good deals for a willing buyer.
Finalize which vehicle you want to buy Before you visit any dealership, you should know the make and model you want to buy. Do your research to make sure the model meets your requirements. Is it the colour, fuel efficiency, personal or family use, or resale value that is important for you? Read Consumer Reports to narrow down your search.

Now, I accept the necessity for upgrades and replacing worn-out infrastructure as much as the next person, but most of these don't appear to have people working on them most of the time or for most of their distance.
Welcome to The Word On The Street our new section where you the public can get your views heard also you can visit www.facebook.com/ thewordonthestreetbristol to post live chat with former Bristol councillor Eileen Means and public person Perry Hicks on everything Bristol. Last weekend, family and I went to the Lake District, up M5 then M6 expecting it to be busy, it was Friday lunchtime after all, but not take too long. WRONG! Avoiding the M5/M6 interchange that is always jammed, we stopped for a break just beyond Cannock. "Whay -ayy", we thought, "Cracked it, won't take long now cruising up the Motorway, nasty bit over". How wrong we were.
As a simple (all jokes off a duck's back!) motorist who pays all local and national taxes is it unreasonable to expect to travel from A to B in reasonable time without having to pack as many supplies as if setting out for a desert trek? Getting across Bristol is a nightmare, causing stress, extra fuel, unnecessary pollution and it must be costing the local economy.
There is a long, long stretch of roadworks, well, miles of marked off inside lane with lots and lots of cones, not a lot of actual "working" visible as you go north. Steady 50 mph just to bunch the traffic nicely. As I haven't been out of Bristol much recently due to elections'n'stuff, I thought roadworks were a Bristol disease; actually, the number of them plus the fact that they pockmark most roads from the suburbs to the centre, it's less a disease, more an epidemic. Barriers, traffic lights and holes in the roads are everywhere, thanks to Metrobus and its lesser variant, Bristol Waterworks.
Have you any ideas/solutions? I would suggest setting time limits and fining the company for outstanding repairs. My niece takes it further and says for every 100 yards without anyone working there, fine them for every half an hour, including nighttimes. Whatever, the poor motorist is not getting value for money for the taxes we pay. The customers - usare at the back of the queue, figuratively and literally. Article by Eileen Means Former councillor

Local dance school attempts world record Whitchurch Dance Studio (Principal - Anne Webber) proudly performed a week-long show 'Rainbow Galaxy' at the Redgrave Theatre, Bristol in March 2016. The show included all the colours of the rainbow followed by a spectacular journey through space. Performers were aged 2 1/2 years to adults (3 generations in one show!). There was classical ballet, tap, modern jazz, street dance/hip hop, lyrical, acro, singing, musical theatre and more.....! All the students, teachers, helpers, crew and parents had a great week. Proceeds went towards Mind, the mental health charity.
Whitchurch Dance Studio also held a Belly Dance Workshop in May at their studio where Baladi, Malfouf and Masmoudi rhythms were explored. We are looking forward to taking part in a nationwide tap dancing event in aid of Children in Need in November. We are hoping to break a Guinness World Record - the most amount of tap dancers dancing in multiple venues at the same time. Please contact me if you would like to participate.
Some members of the school performed in their charity dance social event held at their studio in May to help those affected by the earthquake in Ecuador last April. There was dancing, music, cakes, raffle and a tango master class.

Bristol Harbour Festival celebrates 45th anniversary Save the date for Bristol’s flagship event, Bristol Harbour Festival which celebrates its 45th anniversary on 15-17 July with a weekend packed full of music, entertainment and activities around the city’s harbourside. The Harbourside will be transformed with over four miles of activities, showcasing the talent and skills of the city. Stretching from the Underfall Yard on Cumberland Road into the City Centre and up to Castle Park, there will be an incredible variety of cultural entertainment. There really will be something for everyone. The anniversary celebrations will start with a special outdoor concert in the Lloyd’s Amphitheatre Friday 15th July.
The festival has a long standing commitment to waste recycling and as in previous years will once again come with a call to action – Keep Glass off the Grass and be responsible with your litter, using the recycling bins provided. To maintain the green space, alcohol cannot be brought into Queen Square, where bars will be available. All Festival traders will be encouraged to use environmentally friendly packaging and food wrapping. Visitors to the festival are requested to buy plastic bottles or aluminium cans instead of glass bottles and use the correct recycling bins around the Festival site to help cleaning teams recycle over half of the waste generated.
The ticketed event will be headlined by English rock legends and 80’s chart toppers, Echo and The Bunnymen with support from singer-songwriter and former Haircut 100 front man, Nick Heyward. Following the Friday night concert, the Lloyd’s Amphitheatre will be the venue for the Festival’s music stage, making the most of the natural acoustics of Bristol’s harbour. The dance performance and participation stages move into the city’s iconic Queen Square, surrounded by a continental food and craft market. This year the beautiful aerial acts, daredevil stunts and family entertainment will return to Castle Park and a new route featuring music and markets will run along Redcliffe Quay and Merchants Quay to connect the festival areas. The Festival showcases Bristol’s incredible maritime heritage, encompassing M Shed and Wapping Wharf at the east end of the harbour, SS Great Britain –the venue for a music stage and market over the weekend – and the newly-opened visitor centre at Underfall Yard. Festival goers can either jump onto the Cross Harbour Ferry at the ss Great Britain across to the New Harbour Inlet or continue to enjoy the walk along the harbour from Underfall Yard, over to the Grain Barge where festival entertainment will take them along Harbourside Walk and back into the heart of the event.
Councillor Estella Tincknell, Deputy Mayor with special responsibility for Culture, said: “I am delighted to welcome back the Bristol Harbour Festival for its 45th anniversary for what I am sure will be one of the biggest celebrations of our city’s maritime history yet. The festival has become an important fixture in Bristol’s world class events programme and a popular showcase of the city’s talents, skills and imagination. With so many people expected to come and enjoy the Harbourside over the festival weekend I would like to remind visitors to show the city some love and do what they can to reduce litter and waste and above all, have a happy Harbour Festival.” Tickets for the Friday night concert are available now from the Colston Hall Box Office and cost £21.50 including booking fee. Call 0844 887 1500 or visit www.colstonhall.org. For more information see www.bristolharbourfestival.co.uk, @Bristolharbfest and www.facebook.com/bristolharbourfestival

Ask the vet What should I do if I find flystrike on my rabbit?
Flystrike can, and often does, kill very quickly. We cannot stress enough how important it is to get your rabbit to a vet immediately if you notice any sign of infestation.
Flystrike is a veterinary emergency and your rabbit should be seen straight away.
Flies lay hundreds of eggs at a time in smelly, moist areas (e.g. your rabbit’s bottom) and the warmer weather means that the eggs can hatch within 1-2 hours. As the skin is eaten by the maggots it gives off a smell that attracts more flies, leading to even more maggots.
Flystrike is an incredibly distressing and painful condition caused by flies laying eggs on your rabbit. If left undetected, the hatched maggots will literally eat your bunny alive! Rabbits that have flystrike are often initially lethargic and reluctant to move around and eat. If you find fly eggs (white clusters on the hair) or maggots on your rabbit, you should contact your vet as soon as possible and make an emergency appointment. DO NOT wash your rabbit, this will make it very difficult for your vet to shave the area and could affect correct treatment. If left wet, it will also increase the risk of further infestations from the smell.
Be sure to check your rabbit a minimum of twice a day for any sign of flystrike. You should also use preventative treatments which are available from veterinary practices. Contact Brislington Veterinary Surgery on 0117 971 5115 for more information about flystrike and what you can do to help prevent an infestation. In the event of an emergency, call Highcroft Veterinary Hospital on 01275 832410

Fresh from their own national competition, the men’s quartet “Tonic” sang us the songs they had performed there. One of their members is our Chorus Director, Craig Kehoe, seen in the photo in his lime green “Tonic” shirt – and believe it or not they were wearing lime green socks to match!
Yes, we have been back to Staple Hill Methodist Church again for a concert as part of their regular series. It’s a lovely church to sing in, not just because of the acoustics but because they get such nice people in the audience! !In addition to the chorus performances one of our chorus quartets “Obsession” performed several songs, including the two that they’re going to take to the preliminary round of our national barbershop competition:good luck, girls! We also had some upbeat songs from another chorus group, 8 ladies this time, called “Vintage”. Once you get bitten by the barbershop bug, “just” singing ina chorus is obviously not enough!
As we keep going on about how lovely it is to sing from the gallery of this church, we’ve been invited back to do just that – we’ll let you know when. If you think this sort of thing might suit you, ladies, come along to one of our rehearsal nights at Four Acres School in Withywood, Thursdays 7.30 to 9.00 pm. For more information contact the Chorus Secretary, Jenny Wood, email: jennybari@blueyonder.co.uk

Psychic protection We live in a world of many different forms of energies. Even in our everyday lives, we can be affected by these energies that places and other people give out through emotions and past events. Some people are more able to pick up these energies and feelings, and most of us still use our intuition although we are not always aware of doing so. One of the easiest ways to protect our selves is with the blue cloak. You simply visualise a blue cloak surrounding yourself from head to toe and ask your angel's or whoever you work with to protect you, and always finish with a thank you and a bliessing. For home or property, I always ask my guides or angels to protect my home, garden and cats, and for blessings on my day and for those that I meet. With thanks and blessings.

EURO-THEMED SUMMER HOLIDAY FOOTBALL CAMPS Keep your kids entertained throughout August. Bristol City Community Trust will be delivering its popular football camps at two venues during the summer holidays, with both camps having a special Euro 2016 theme. The camps will be delivered at Gordano School, Portishead and Abbeywood School, Stoke Gifford from Monday, August 1st – Thursday, August 25th. They will run from 10am-3pm each day and are designed to give boys and girls of all abilities aged six-14 the opportunity to develop their footballing ability, social development and fitness, whilst participating in a fun, safe environment. Bristol City Community Trust’s highly-qualified and experienced team of coaches will deliver the sessions with the days being split into two. The morning will focus on introductions and a variety of drills, while the afternoon will feature tournament style matches, where participants will look to replicate the performances of players and teams involved in the Euros. Each of the coaches work to the same format so no matter which venue you attend, you will receive the same service.
“Not only do the participants benefit physically and mentally, but they also have a great chance to socialise with other children from around the community, who they may not otherwise interact with. “Our camps cater for children of all abilities, so whether your child has been inspired from the Euro’s and is aiming to become a professional footballer, or are a young player who simply enjoys participating in the sport, these camps are perfectly suited. “Although we hope to develop players during their time with us and give them some direction, the main emphasis of the camps is on participation and enjoyment!” The Euro-themed camps are priced at just £15 for one day, £30 for two days, £40 for three days or £50 for all four days. These camps always prove popular, so to avoid disappointment, book online now at www.bristolcitycommunitytrust.org.uk. Alternatively, contact the Trust on 0117 963 0636 for further information. Those who book before Sunday, July 31st will automatically be entered into a draw to win a signed Bristol City shirt.
Commenting on the Trust’s holiday camps, head coach Sarah Adams said: “Bristol City Community Trust’s holiday camps are an affordable and accessible way for children to remain active during the school holidays in a fun, safe environment.
