RÉSUMÉ

ABOUT Marcelo Ramirez (*1989) is an industrial designer. After spending time at ITESM in Monterrey (MX) he graduated in product design from Politecnico di Milano (IT) in 2014. After that he has spent time working with various top design studios in Mexico City, where he currently resides. He is convinced that, as designers, we have to work together for the improvement of our community and that the final form of an object must be the result of a methodological approach that enables the object to resolve a problem the most optimal way possible, while also being coherent with it’s context. He also has a positive vision for the future. He is currently pursuing his Master Degree in Product-Service System Design at Politecnico di Milano.

Creative process

“Curiosity, ideas, ethics, a lot of work, cook slowly.”

-Antonio Cittero

The final form of an objects is the logical result of a proyect that aims to solve in an optimal way all the components of a design problem: choose the most suitable materials, the right techniques, experiments with the possibilities of both, take in account the psychological component, the cost and each of it´s functions. Aesthetics and functionality are intrinsic characteristigs of design, if a product lacks either of those it should not be called design. A computer does not make a designer, we believe there are many ways to bring design to life; through research, sketching, model building and more importantly throught dialogue.

San Miguel Craft Map A visual research about the crafts we can find in a kilometer radius from our studio.

One of the skills any good designer must have is the knowledge to make anything- a skill that comes with an exhilarating sense of being able to make whatever you want, just because you can. But what if this skill were used in a context where makers are everywhere?

Having our studio in México City, in a context where many people become makers for financial reasons, could be both a blessing and a curse. This project was developed for Do Flex Test magazine commissioned by independent curator Regina Pozo for The British Council.

Wine Opener

A comfortable and modern wine opener for the contemporary house.

This Wine Opener is a solid wine tool with a twist, cleverly designed to provide a comfortable grip and ease the wine opening experience. The subtle organic shape and the texture convey a sense of familiarity and nostalgia, a reminiscence of wine vineyards. It’s comfortable to hold and the textured surface not only serves an aesthetic role but it’s also functional allowing for a firm grip. Uncork and pour a glass of wine for yourself and your friends using this unique wine accessory.

MĂŠxico Design Cover A visual representation of the tools and modern instruments of design.

We were invited to design the cover for the 38th issue of MĂŠxico Design magazine. In the cover we portray the importance of understanding were our modern objects come from, and represent the diverse mediums in which we can utilize tools and modern instruments to modify our surroundings with the goal of ensuring our wellbeing.

Standard Office Chair A modernist take on a traditional Mexican design.

This is the second object produced by The Chair that Rocks initiative. Designed in collaboration with local cabinet makers from CarpinterĂa Casa Prieto in Tlacotalpan, Veracruz, the starting point of this project was to create an office version of the common standard rocking chair, the most popular chair found in the region.

Story

Rodolfo Kusulas & Marcelo Ramirez first crossed paths while studying product design at Politecnico di Milano in Milan, Italy. Since then they have shared many ideas, beliefs and techniques regarding their profession. They believe design should aim for a seven billion people audience -the whole world and not just a select number or people. The designer does not bother to make an object that it will last forever in time, but aims to proyect an object to be consumed as bread, every day, as if it were a cultural food, hence the name of the studio. In this way, this aesthetic, can be administered in small doses, by means of the objects we use every day. Today they come together as nom to create their first collection: prologue. It consists of a series of indoor funiture. The objects are based on simple shapes for modern household needs. It focuses on exploring the neccesary elements of an object in order to find that essential quality to achieve simplicity. The collection consist of 6 elements with various format variants.

Prologue I read somewhere – and I cant remember where – once: “You can reach timelessness if you look for the essence of things and not the appearance.” And that got me thinking... We are no past the mark of 7 billion people on this earth is this fact is both unnerving and exciting at the same time, it’s normal that everyone wants their chance and, don’t get me wrong I want everyone to have their chance, i wanna know all the possibilities, besides why should someone be denied the freedom of trying? With whatever outcome, everyone should get their opportunity regardless of their point of view, as long as its justified. The paradox here is that all this availability makes it really hard to concentrate and distinguish what its really worth from the background noise, like a party for deaf people where everyone is talking. In a way we think we are getting more but in reality we are getting less, the old argument of quantity vs quality. The problem here I think lies not only in the the source but also in the receptor end of the situation. We don’t do our part, we get distracted from all that noise, we get lazy and stop using our brains and stop criticizing or, as Socrates puts it a man must understand and examine himself and the universe that surrounds him; “...for the unexamined life is not worth living.” Look, what I’m trying to say is that besides from anyone having their chance, we should not exalt whats empty and useless; and we should strive to posses the humility and respect to recognize this fact, both when creating and evaluating. We as a society need to start looking in another direction, this is what this journey is all about: exploration. Because how can you know for sure whats essential without first evaluating all your options? And from what I’ve seen I’ve come to the conclusion that ours its a time to be conscious, of what we need and of what we use, but also importantly of what we don’t need and use; create fewer but more significant things. Focus on substance, on essence rather than looks because the appearance is transitory, the appearances trendiness but the essence is timeless.
