Lipanians: Certified Mandarin Learners

2013, Felizardo C, Lipana National High School witnessed the invasion of foreign cultures in the Philippines in the form of Department of Education’s Special Program in Foreign Language. Lipanians in each pilot section of ever y year level were chosen to be the very first learners of the elective subject

Chinese Mandarin. Students of this class must have a final grade of not less than 85% in their academic subjects and they must also pass the annual Young Chinese Learners Test (YCT) with the score of not less than 120 out of 200 for them to advance to the next level, however, if they did not meet the requirements,

they are to remain in their current levels and pass the next YCT. The first year of the students in studying Mandarin is focused on the basics such as the introduction of oneself, counting numbers and forming and verbally presenting common sentence patterns; the second year is for the intermediate

learning that consists of writing basic strokes and characters and forming of a more complex sentence patterns. Each level, the lessons get more challenging that the last one. “Masaya ako dahil nabigyan ako ng pribilehiyong makapag aral ng Mandarin sa unang taon ko bilang mag aaral sa sekondarya. Ngayon na ako

DepEd provided materials to the selected schools such as flashcards, charts and books to

Lipana National High School (FCLNHS) has constructed a three-story building with two rooms each floor for the Senior High school program through the efforts of the outgoing principal, Mrs. Aquilina Monte and the current school organization. In line with this, the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Association (COCOPEA) chairperson Br. Jun S. Erquiza FSC Ph.D., said that their organization sees that the K-12 program will be embraced “entirely and whole-heartedly”. With the signing of the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, two years have been added to the basic education system of the Philippines, making this feat as DepEd’s last major classroom construction, according to Education secretary, Mr. Armin Luistro, The construction of FCLNHS’ new building for Senior High School program started last month, April 2016. Mary Jane Lumando, a grade 9 student said that the new building even though it only has 6 rooms, at least the school would not remove another section just to have a room for Senior High School. According to some Grade 10 High School students, they are now assured next school year because the construction will pave way to bigger classrooms that will accommodate their students specifically for their specialized subjects that will need wider spaces. pBy Kim Anne Lacson

Dionisio Memorial High School, September 9. The places of the students in this competition are written as follows: John Lester Doliete, 8th Place; Regine Sibug, 3rd Place; EJ V. Esguerra, 2nd Place; Kenneth Gravamen, 1st Place. Overall, Team Lipana was the second overall champion in EDDIS level. The winners continue to

defend their titles on Division level. Sibug got the 2nd place, Esguerra become the 9th place and Gravamen won 4th place. The contestants were overwhelmed of the success in the said competition. They said that everyone worked hard for this to reach their ultimate goal--to win. “Nakakagulat kasi umabot kaming lahat sa ganito. FCLNHS conducts World Population Day

o promote awareness about the urgency of population issues, Felizardo C. Lipana National High School (FCLNHS) conducted the celebration of World Population Day last June 11. This year’s theme “Investigating Teenage Girl’s” focuses on early age pregnancy. This also included educating students about the causes and effects of teenage pregnancy such as poverty, undergraduate and other social and economic

conflicts. Teenage pregnancy is one of the biggest problems that the country encounters. To minimize the problem, World Population Day was governed in 1898, where worldwide government, schools and local government units (LGU’s) raise awareness about this significant issue. In this celebration, different departments ran contests, acting performances, and film viewing of documentaries related to teenage pregnan-

cy such as the I-Witness’ “Nanay na Si Nene.” Moreover, the Social Studies department directed the role plays while the MAPEH and English department administrated art making activities such as poster making and slogan writing contest. “E

ducation is the most powerful weapon,in combating poverty” a famous cliché among elders but will never go wrong. The world needs the youth for a better tomorrow who will mold them? Of course, our beloved and honorable teachers. What could have been great about them? They are already are our heroes, who always fix every problem; who had a vision of every student’s potential; who has seventh sense of feeling a student’s needs. With all those, a day for the teachers deserves a special celebration. October 5, 2016, Wednesday, FCLNHS held the annual celebration of the Teachers’ Day,

which carries the theme, “My teacher, My Hero”. The celebration was made possible through the joint efforts of the Supreme Student Government (SSG) and the school officials. Each grade level prepared performances for their heroes and second parent at school. They never missed on giving flowers and sweet treats from their hearts and most of all, the letters that they themselves wrote. The event has gone better when the teachers presented their own dance numbers that made everyone off their seats – remarkably showing off that teachers are not just of great minds but also with groovy bodies.

Before the programs ended, a video clip was presented by the SSG together with the 32 Harmony of the Grade 10 Rizal. And as an additional treat for the teachers, the ATEC students offered manicure - pedicure and foot spa services, which they enjoyed a lot. Truly, teachers are molders of the youth. They may be strict or lenient, jolly or not, they may not always appear they way we expect them to be, but they are also humans, they get tired and feel stressed at times but they care about you. They still aim the best for their students. And giving them a day like this definitely warms their hearts. pBy Nash Ville Villena

Not Just Being Professional

y the mandate of DepEd Order no. 25, s. 2016, the Guidance office initiated the Career Guidance week, which carries the theme, “Trabahong Hindi Sikat Pero Pak” last August 2016. During the weeklong event, students were encouraged to join the different activities prepared by the Guidance Office such as the hugot lines, from which students came up with dramatic lines used by a specific occupation. There was also the Dream job mo, I-Selfie mo, wherein students drew their dream profession and posed for a picture with their head on it. Moreover, the dress up contest happened to be the most awaited part of the event, from which every class chose a representative who will act and dress to their chosen profession.

Less known yet needed. Chosen students took the center stage as they dress-up showing off their ‘Trabahong Di Sikat pero Pak’.

The career guidance week aims to remind the students of those jobs that may not be popular to everyone but are helpful and financially beneficial. Like what Mrs. Marilen Paguio expressed during the event, “It (Career Guidance) specialized on the

jobs that are being left behind, like miners, beauticians, plumbers, carpenters and others. They are more work beyond being professionals, with which, students (nowadays) prioritizes being a professional.” pBy Kimberly Ann Lacson

spite reports saying that the voucher program will stop accomodating recipients for the school year 2017-2018. The above mentioned statements were further clarified on the DepEd memorandum order no. 66, series of 2016., stating its visions of providing clear and detailed guide-

lines in the implementation process of the voucher application system starting from pre-qualification up to the redemption. FCLNHS and GNVHS join forces

eptember 29th of the current year, witnessed the very first In-Service Training (INSET) for teachers in reference to the Division memorandum no. 127, s. 2016 Division Orientation Workshop of the School-to-School Partnership for the curriculum year 2016 at the premises of Felizardo C. Lipana National High School. DepEd Order No. 44, s. 2016 cited that high performing schools have been identified to become leader schools and are given Php 140, 000 SBM allowance providing and upgrading teaching strategies of the select partner schools. Leader School should identify the partner schools’ specific needs based on their school improvement plans (SIP) in order to strengthen cooperation, collaboration and partnership to achieve full potential among schools nationwide. This year, FCLNHS became one of the leader schools with Guiguinto National Vocational High School being its partner school. Together, they started the INSET with a warm welcome coming from the Leader School’s former principal, Ms. Aquilina R. Monte, followed by GNVHS’s director, Mr. Julian S. Canonoy, with his short but inspirational message. The seminar proper started

with Ms. Monte’s important topic about School-Based Management Assessment that inspired everyone in the room to be a more competent and responsible public servant. The seminar’s scope broadened and became even more challenging and interesting when several topics have been discussed Dr. Maria Cecilia L. Santiago challenged the participants of the seminar when she discussed her topic about Action Research Writing an Action Research requires more wit and ideas of innovation to meet the demand of the new curriculum-this was the brain-draining challenge Dr. Santiago threw to all of the INSET’s participants. Being one with the students and being to capture their attention everytime you are discussing a lesson is one of the most wellknown struggles of teacher,This particular problem was discussed and resolved by Mathematics teacher, Mrs. Josephine M. Valencia, with her topic of differentiated strategies wherein she suggested of using different elements when teaching a particular like what she is doing-letting her students use their creativity in presenting given task or just simply reviewing the past lesson. With the topic of Continuous

Improvement, English Department Head, Dr. Antifas R. Reyes, discussed about the project of the Department of Education that will resolve around the continuous improvement of an identified school process ,and service related to access, quality or governance with the end view of improving learning outcomes. Next was about School Learning Cell , Discussed by the School Guidance Counselor, Mr. Michael Santos where he emphasized the big role of potential stake holders in bringing support and resources for the improvement of teacher’s instructional management skills. Techniques and useful strategies on coping with students weakness in reading was discussed by English teacher, Mrs. Christine J. Villena, with her topic of Remedial Reading Program. The Master teachers of different departments became one in discussing the remaining topics such as Best Practices Different Teaching Strategies, Multiple Intelligences and visual Style. As a fruit of their hard work and creativity, Joshua Valibia, Ernesto Casidsid, and Jasmine Leoncio were honored for being the Second placers on their head to head battle against the students of Dr. Felipe De Jesus National High School, during the Technolympics, Landscaping category. Lipanians, on the other hand, participated on the other categories such as the Home Economics (Nail Art with Hand Massage, Hair style with Facial Make-up); Agri-Fishery Arts (Landscaping and Experimental Cookery) and ICT (Web Designing). Tracking the Senior High

t was May 15, 2013 when former President Benigno S. Aquino III signed the K to 12 law, a landmark piece of legislation that institutionalizes 12 years of basic education, making it responsive to global educational standards. Senior High School (SHS) covers the last two years of the K to 12 program and includes Grade 11 and 12. In SHS, students will go through a core curriculum and subjects under a track of their choice. Tracks to choose from at FCLNHS are General Academic Strand (GAS), Food Beverage Services (FBS) and Computer System Servicing (CSS). Felizardo

Meanwhile, the Math club also had the arcade booth. The Science and Filipino clubs opted for a film showing of latest Filipino and English movies. The English

club continued their traditional wedding booth and freedom wall. The fREADom wall has always been a hit specifically because of the famous ‘hugot’ lines. 116th LGU Guiguinto Blood Letting and Tree Planting

n line with the celebration of the Philippine Civil Service’s 116th anniversary, a bloodletting and tree planting activity were conducted by the LGU of Guiguinto, October 2, Sunday. Continuing to their public service goals, the LGU initiated the bloodletting activity as a start of the celebration. The Guiguinto community as well as the public servants at the municipal hall actively joined the activity. Happening hand in hand with this event, is the tree planting on the neighboring areas, joined by the office heads and staffs. The LGU is an active organization of the municipality. It has continuously increased efforts on joining and organizing health-related and nature-friendly activities. his year held the Environmental Summit last August 4 at the Guiguinto Municipal Athletic and Cultural Center (GMACC). The said event

showcased the innate talents of the Guiguintoeños in making world class products such as bags, wallets and house decorations out of recycled materials. Participating mer-

chants coming from the different barangays of the municipality were given the chance to present their products and were glad to be invited on the event. Each merchant placed their best product and together with small talks about with how they came up with the idea of the product. As a culminating activity, young ladies, dressed in there flamboyantly crafted gowns made from indigenous materials, proudly took the center stage and presented them among the crowd. Lipanians, namely, Mikhail Vince Villena, John Lloyd Cruz and Krista Marie Cervantes, proudly joined the activity as they walked on the stage with pride and confidence through the efforts and creative mind of Mr. Marcelo Nebreja. o enhance skills and gain further training on using their mighty pen, the young journalist of FCLNHS attended and competed on the second leg of the ByLine Journalism Conference at the Guiguinto Municipal Art and Culture Center (GMACC) last July 30. Private and Public schools from different parts of Guiguinto were gathered in the event made possible by the Guiguinto Scholars Association (GSA). The event started with a program together with opening remark coming from Mayor Ambrosio ‘Boy’ Cruz, Jr. and the president of the GSA community. Afterwards, students were sent to their assigned rooms accordingly as the seminar on each category will be conducted. After each talk, the contest proper started.

Individual awards were presented and are as follows: For the English Division, the students who out-performed the other contestants are the following: Trizhalyn Maglangit (Feature Writing, First Place), Sherilyn Delos Reyes (Photo Journalism, Third Place), Reena Bautista (Editorial Writing, Seventh Place), Joshua De Vera (News Writing, Sixtth Place), Mikhail Vince Villena (Editorial Cartooning, Fifth Place) and Gian Paulo Aquino, (Sports Writing, Sixth Place). Afterwards, gifts and tokens of appreciation were offered by the head teachers on behalf of all the teaching force of the school. Aiming to improve teacher’s professionalism, INSET focuses on ways of making strategic intervention materials by identifying factors and objectives that contribute towards the effectiveness of in-service training such as identifying the pedagogical approaches methods and strategies applicable to all subject areas and reviewing and updating the Result-based Performance Management System (RPMS). INSET started with FCLNHS’ principal Dr. Jesie L. Borja, emphasizing additional information in Teaching Strategies,

Child Protection Policy and Stress Management by sharing his thoughts and experiences about those basic but significant things. Mrs. Honeyzel F. Calderon then discussed some important matters about the Mutliple Intelligences (MI) of the learners. Differetiated Instructions and some things to remember in applying it was discussed by Mrs. Josephine M. Valencia. Ms. Marivi B. Lobedario clarified many things about “Pagtuturo ng Panitikang Gender-Based” wherein she gave some instances or cases as regards to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) that showed how a teacher should do in such events. The Code of Ethics for

teachers discussed by Mrs. Helen M. Polo reminded the teachers of the rules and regulations that must be inculcated to their hearts, minds and souls. Lipana’s Guidance Counselor, Mr. Michael M. Santos shared the updated laws of the Child Protection Policy that showed the ways of protecting the learners inside the school. Ms. Rochiel B. Barcelona shared some programs on how to develop intervention materials for students who are mentally challenged. On the other hand, reviews about RPMS and some updates about the Key Result Area (KRA) were given by Dr. Antifas R. Reyes. Stress management was presented by Mrs. Christine J. Villena. The seminar’s participants learned various ways on

managing the stress they have been experiencing. Moreover, Mathematics teachers Mrs. Maricel P. Ablaza, Mrs. Vilma R. Figuerroa, and Mrs. Editha Sugay discussed “Presentation and Critiquing Outputs”. Each department’s representatives shared differentiated instructional materials to be used by teachers and learners in their demo-teaching. ‘Brains without skills are useless.’ Broadcasting the requirements of the being a top pressures the students especially to the one who is expecting more on their co-curricular activities. According to DepEd, all extra curricular and co-curricular activities are now excluded on the computation of grades. Candidates for honors, at any grade level shall be drawn from the top ten (10) students of the school. They must not have a final grade lower than 80% in any subject. The students’ grades in the previous curriculum level shall

not be considered in the ranking of honors for graduating students. Only the grades in the current curriculum year shall be considered in the ranking of honor students. Transferees shall be considered in the ranking provided they are enrolled not later than the second week of classes of the current School Year (S.Y). It came to our knowledge that low-lying classrooms will soon be demolished and rebuilt. However, I just want to express my concern with the school especially with the comfort rooms. I personally feel uncomfortable because of its appearance, cleanliness as well as the problem with the water supply. This I noted because I want to change our comfort rooms not just for the students and teachers of Lipana but also for our visitors, especially these days that the Alma Mater is often used as billeting quarters of other neighboring schools. Example, you are joining to a Math competition and you won, technically, your grade in Math will increase but do not forget to accomplish your responsibility to the other subjects. Brains are now the main requirements for being one of the honor students but do not stop joining co-curricular activities because it enhances your skills. With the newly appointed principal comes better progress Not wasting any time, on his first day of office as the school principal, Dr. Jesie L. Borja immediately discussed a run-down of things that he hopes to see among teachers, students and staff. Priorities are on the school improvement in terms of access quality and governance. On top of his list is the systematic and orderliness in the school. Students became more responsible today, seldom to no one would you see students roaming around. He also stressed on the cleanliness and beautification of the school. From the basic waste segregation to the round the clock classroom inspection, such practice is well-implemented and followed appropriately. Putting stress on the safety, orderliness and welfare of students, late comers are no longer to avail of a seemingly late-all-you-can pass. Two or three instances of being a late comer will need necessary actions, same goes with absenteeism. Remarkably, the incidences of fights and student-to-student major offences progressively lessened. Moreover, clear communications and properly documented transactions are some other facets that he looked into. He believes that transparency will lead to better transactions inside and outside the school. He also aims to relive and reinvigorate the school’s long known credibility on being the training ground of well-competitive students. Whereas, he wanted to expose the school on the outside cities whenever there will be student-participated activities. Embracing changes will come a long way. The new school head, being an experienced principal already knew what the school hungers for. Being the new father of the school, he is set to give us his five or more years of service and is willing to become an initiator of improvement. Truly, he accepted the challenge and he has begun.

Start with One Good Thing If there is one thing that I’m not today, it would be successful. I am but a typical human who works eight hours (or more in most cases) a day and goes home to sleep to repeat the same monotonous cycle the day after. Nothing exceptional about me, I think, to proudly share with thousands of students my Alma Mater currently has. If that’s the case, why am I on this space of the school paper? Well, let’s back track to the not so far eight years ago. Almost a decade past, I was that freshman who wanted nothing else but to always be in the star section, get good grades, and be among the top in the class. Studying is my thing and I promised myself to be consistently on the Top 10 list within my four years in high school the way I did so for six years in grade school. Competitions inside and outside the school were once my source of pride. I represented the school in numerous competitions and I also have a share of organizations that I joined inside the campus. You might be thinking that this is already the start of my road-tosuccess type of story, but guess what? It’s not. The thing is, I failed to maintain being on the Top 10 list of our class and I was that low profile student whom my teachers can easily forget. I was that shy girl who chose to stay quiet during recitations even if I knew the answer. I was that timid girl who kept her hair tied and did not exhibit any sense of kakikayan. I was that girl who wanted to tell many stories but decided to keep it to herself. Rarely did I win competitions outside the campus and each failure had delivered severe blows to my already idealistic self then. Fast track to 2012. The sky was evidently threatening to douche our

faces caked with our best make-up while clad in those white gowns. The rest of the day was a blur and only one thing was going through my mind. I got to go to college and tell (or rather, write) my stories. This may sound funny, but I felt like Moana being called by the ocean to restore the heart of Te Fiti. College is where I let go of all my inhibitions. I started telling my stories, as well as of the others. For four years, I was raised to be a descendant of Del Pilar. I chose the mighty pen and started constructing a lofty dream to become a member of the press someday. Yet after four years of hard work and eight months after graduation, here I am. I did not become a media practitioner and my dream remains a dream. I currently work as a team leader in the writing department of a solutions company—far from what I imagined for myself back then. Again, let’s go back to the question. Why am I here and eating a serious space of your school paper? It is for me to tell all of you that success does not happen overnight; it has not happen to you yet and it has not happen to me either. Putting aside the melodrama, here’s my point. Don’t sulk if you did not make it to the Top 10 or if you did not win the most coveted award. Give your best shot, but accept that there are things you just can’t achieve. Like what Oshima said in Haruki Murakami’s novel Kafka on the Shore, “...there are things we could do better, and limits to what we can accomplish. But rest assured we’re doing our very best. I think it’d be a whole lot better if you focus on what we do well than what we’re unable to do…” On a further note, let me borrow what my thesis instructor said back in college, “what you focus on expands.” If you focus on your failures and self-proclaimed defeats, you will probably dwell on more letdowns in

Start by opening your book and understanding the very first words of your day’s lesson. Begin with baby steps, then giant leaps. All of these unsolicited pieces of advice are not only for those students from the pilot section alone. This goes farther than any hierarchy there is in the campus. Focusing on what you can do is a good start for your journey toward success, regardless if you are in the cream of the crop or not. Forget about your class section ladder for it will not matter a few years from now. Forget how cool you want to be when you go to college or graduate from senior high. Forget the zeroes you are computing for your dream job’s salary (I did this once and it really broke my heart, and my wallet). Forget about the pessimistic environment that you might be currently in. But do not forget this tiny bit of flame inside of you. You are dreaming, you would be and you should be. If you still don’t know which path you want to go looking for success, remember that you still have six years or less in FCLNHS. For now, do at least one good thing for your soon to be alma mater and to the millions of Filipinos who are paying their taxes to subsidize your education. You don’t need to write an opinion article nor coax your teachers that they are awesomely doing well with their lessons. Just do one good thing. Two words: Study well.

It was not easy for me to have such money - I had to skip several recess and lunches and even do walks after school if I

We find the answer on I Timothy 6:9 “ But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.” Money or wealth becomes evil when a man desires to be rich and that desire he fall into temptation. Why is this so dangerous to a person who wants to be rich? In I Timothy 6:10 “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows” . The love of money will lead man or any person who loves money too much to perdition or destruction. Why? Because their desire for causes them to stray away or keep them far away from obeying God’s commandments. Now there are those who they have so much love of money and because they have so much love for money that they think about killings, they commit murder, they steal , they commit fraud and so many other things just because of the love of money. What does the bible say that man especially the chosen servant of God must do ? On I Timothy 6: 11 “ But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness ”. The chosen servant of God are advised to flee or separate themselves from evil things. And if we listen to the advise given to us by the holy scriptures, we can prove to God that our trust and hope are in Him and not on our possession.

Dream less, hopeful. By Trizhalyn Maglangit My dream came true. Streaks of sunlight were peeping behind the clouds, caressing my face gently with warmth. The relaxing gale embraced and accompanied me to my destination. It was not your ordinary four-cornered classroom, walls may be absent but students with raging hope in their eyes were present in my class every single time. I had them sat on our make-shift chair – a used box cut along the edges – and ignoring the honks of vehicles beside us, we started to discuss the lesson for that day. Watching them striving hard just to be able to study pained me a lot. It made me wonder, “Can life be more considerate?”

It was just unfair. For them to be listed and be one of over 26.5 million children worldwide who were disabled to go to school just because they belong to almost 46.7 million people around the world who were chained into the depths of ruthless poverty was so tragic compared to those kids who were just labeled as students but were not really one, they – these kids in tattered clothing trying their best to answer the quiz I had given to them correctly, were the most deserving children to be in the clad in those fresh-scented uniforms, a bag equipped with books in hand. “Thoughts are useless unless followed with action.” – P. Rubbing my eyes that were out of focus, I picked up the can beside me. A five peso coin was added to it. Flakes of my dreams rushed into my mind like the sunlight pouring around me., flooding the fogged street with a cool morning scent. A smile was drawn on my face. I happily stood up, pressed the creases off of my torn cloth and picked up the can beside me. First day of classes is due soon.

“A merchant ship was sailing in the calm waters of the ocean, and suddenly, a storm hit.” I had my eyes but I did not use them. I had my ears but I did not use them as well. If I could let my mind go to all possibilities, I would actually be terrified where a 15-year old could be. My youngest sister was missing. She has been lured out of our parent’s house in the early morning. Exactly how, we still don’t know. We’ll probably never know. They arrested them man who did it. The investigators found some of her remains buried 19 feet deep. The trial was all by means, the worst part of the situation. I was left in horrific images, reliving the nightmare. During that time, my father was also struggling with cancer. He passed away not knowing where she was. Several years after, my mom passed away as well. I was in my mid-30s and I felt like an orphan. Well, I still had everything, but all I ever wanted is to stop the pain. I found myself addicted to drugs and alcohol. Yeah, it made me feel like I’m in heaven but the reality is I am living in a living hell. I enjoyed the stimulating effects of ecstasy. Ecstasy is a man-made pill, so the purity is questionable. The maker can use whatever ingredients he or she would like in making the drug. Every 45 minutes after swallowing a pill, it made me feel high of ecstasy. It increases my energy, pleasure, emotional warmth, distorted sensory and time perception. It also triggers my hormones which affects my sexual arousal and trust. I usually take the second dose as the effects of the first dose began to fade. But it doesn’t change everything. It’s high last three to six hours. And after it, I am nothing once again. I really felt so betrayed. I felt that God withdrew,

In this game, where money runs everything, we are bound to be their pawns. Checkmate. Victory was drawn all over my face as I look proudly at my queen, bishop and pawn trapping my opponent’s king. I held my hand out and received three crisp paper bills together with a sachet with our all-time favorite meal. On my way home, a lad suddenly ran in front of me carrying what looked like the prize I had received earlier, only it was contained in a larger sachet. I continued to walk and was stopped again in my tracks. This time, it is not because of a young boy but because of the sight of smoke erupting form my neighbor’s houses. A thought struck me. Is it not so fascinating to witness a whole community being indicted to over 125 million of illegal drug users worldwide? And even more marvelous is that they are also united in increasing their number by being part of approximately 72.3 million people around the world that sell these drugs for livelihood purposes. This thought of not being alone – that I have got my whole neighborhood

to support me – made me smile. I started to walk again and was suddenly in front of an extremely lighted façade of my house. The proud smile that was drawn on my face earlier was removed by the weeping of an aged woman while she embraces the cadaver of his son – on his neck is a necklace with a wooden pendant. The picture of my queen, bishop and pawn trapping my opponents. King rushed into my mind. The crispness of the paper bills and the touch of that sachet in my mind followed. Then came the gun shots. A queen. bishop, and pawn cannot beat a king in reality. The law, justice, and even the witnesses do not stand a chance against a king, against someone who could silence them with just a handful of crisp paper in their mouths. In the end, in this game where money runs everything, we are really bound to be their pawns; not to be their witnesses to put them in jail but rather, we are the sacrifices to protect them.

that God let all things happen. It was about that I gave up trying to control my drug abuse. It was too much. It was the time that I needed some deeper help. I had been a sober for, well, over a year and had been all through the 12 steps to the best of my ability. But I was still struggling. I couldn’t understand why, if I have gone through these steps, why was I feeling like this? I sat down and just started reading what each of the 12 steps were, because I knew that there had to have been some place that I didn’t do everything I could do. And I got step 6, and I couldn’t really recall truly asking God to remove my character defects. I decided I was going to do it. I don’t know what exactly is going to happen so I just thought to myself, “If He was in front of me right now, what would I want Him to say?” And I thought, “Will you let me take this?” And I realized that I had gone this entire works to be relieved of this misery. And that question, – “Will you let me take this?” changed the trajectory of the recovery and my life. I had a good friend recently told me, of an African proverb that says, “If there’s no demon within, the demon outside can do us no harm.” And that’s where I live; I’ve conquered those interior demons, nothing on the outside matters. Well, it is definitely our own choices. Become entirely ready to have God remove all your character’s weaknesses. I heard claps and cheers as I ended my inspirational speech in my Alma Mater’s commencement exercises. People say, “Studs you’re an optimist.” I never said I was an optimist. I just have hope because what’s the alternative of hope? Despair? If I had despair, I might as well put my head in the oven. I must free myself of the hope that this river will ever rest. I must learn to sail in high winds. I had always held to the belief that there is a better life, a better world beyond the flowing waters. I am prepared for the worst, but works for the best. It is long but totally worth it. I went down form the boat to finally go to school. I am doing this everyday for we are living beside the river. My parents cannot afford to buy a house because of poverty. This day is the day I would never forget. Arghhh!” “ I just felt nothing but the cold icy water and the scratch on my face. But this did not stop me. I still went to school. The sudden disappointment of hope, it leaves a scar, literally, a scar on my face, but this is the ultimate fulfillment of hope that never entirely removes. I am here, finally. Thoughts swirl in my mind. Strands of light from the setting sun guided my every step as I walk towards the finish line of this journey, towards the end of the cliff—to the Utopia I have been longing to reach. Realizing it was the last page, I close the book with a heavy sigh. The last forty-five words (You did count it, too, didn’t you?) of the protagonist still reverberate in my ears. It flooded my system a mix of comfort and depression that it made me entertain certain ideas; Will I ever reach such impossible place? Will I ever have the chance to go there? Do I even want to go? Being unable to give an appropriate and logical answer to my questions, I took the idea off my head and went out of the cupboard I am hiding at. Maybe it was because I am the only heir left that I am being treated this way—being given all the things I wish to have but do not really need, being cared about like I am some sort of a treasure. Well, maybe I really was. Maybe I am a treasure whose origin must remain a mystery; I am a treasure that should be handled with thorough care. Maybe it was because I am the only heir left that I am being treated this way—being given all the affection, all the love I had been wanting to receive even if I do not deserve it—even if it all were really meant for someone else. I do not know if I should consider it a blessing or not. Maybe it is situated in between. But, you see, since that fateful accident that took my twin away from us, our parents finally looked at me. They finally noticed my existence, they finally took me away from the shadows of my brother.

Page 92 Five. Walking along the sandy road I did not see anyone. I did not hear any noise. Indeed, a serene place with only the chirping sounds of birds and the waves of the sea are the only music in my ears. Twelve. I didn’t know what place is this. I walked along the street. I saw a trees, must be Mahogany, tall, yet slender, must be nearly century old because of carves and cuts on its body. It must have witnessed all seasons and weather cycles. On its side, I saw a bench, wooden, weak, and with thick dust on it. Sixteen. With no hesitation, I sat there and I felt the presence of the wind. Felling the air will make you realize that you are far from the city. Not a glimpse of smog, but pure, fresh and cold air despite the 11 A.M. sun. I stood up and I started to walk again and with no less than fifty steps, I saw a river, with clean and calm current, I soaked my feet. I sat beside the river and I saw beautiful butterflies on the top of the flowers, bluish green, magenta and purplish red butterflies. I run out of colors that I knew. Twenty-Eight. Felling in awe with what I’ve seen, I seek to look for more, then in no less than a mile, I saw a mountain at a distance. But I was thirsty. My throat feels dry for I have travelled far. I felt like I have seen the mountain somewhere. Déjà vu. I sneaked on the shrubs and bushes and saw glowing roses. Fire.

Or maybe not, really. Since that fateful accident that took my twin away from us, my parents finally looked at me, their eyes accusing. But I cannot just waste my only chance. So I did everything that I could to fill that space left by my twin, even if it means being his shadow again. I would do anything that I could, that I could endure just to have my parents look at me even if it means living as my brother. Now, the weirdest part of my ‘transformation’ is giving a heart-breaking eulogy for myself, at my own funeral. Since I have to be my twin, I have to die. I have to stand in front of my mourning relatives and friends as I give my last words for myself while staring at the empty ceramic vase where my ashes are supposedly situated. Silly, is it not ? But I have to. I need to even if it really is killing me. I would endure anything just to have my parents look at me, even if all they see and want is my twin. I have to. From that night of ‘my’ wake onward, I became a different person. My twin has always been the perfect son and now that I have to be him, expectations from my parents were overwhelming. But I have to endure it, I have to. I need to but I failed. I just cannot bear to let my old self rot away. I stand to wake up everyday living as a different person, pretending that I am him. I have loved my parents dearly, I have always been wanting to receive their love, their affection, but it hurts me to see them looking at me as my twin brother. It hurts me to see them only looking at me, the real me, just to cast accusing eyes, to let me know how disgusted they are to even keep alive. But I am the only living reminder of their beloved son so they really have no any choice.

It hurts me deeply to know that I am the reason of their sorrow, of the despair they are feeling every time they look at me. So, I ran. I ran away from them, away from everyone. To where? I do not have any idea. I ran until I am out of breath, looking for that place where I belong, where I am accepted as who I really am. Well, I may have an idea to where I would go, after all. All I ever wanted is my parent’s attention and I finally received that since that fateful accident that took my twin away from us, since that night I had let my brother’s blood stain my hands. I have lived a life worth dying for, worth killing for. At least, that is what everyone has been thinking. Thoughts swirl in my mind—ideas storming in and out of my head that it made me sway a little as I stood at the finish line of my journey, at the end of the cliff—in front of me is the Utopia I have been longing to reach. Will I ever reach such impossible place? Will I ever have the chance to go there? Do I even want to go? The answer immediately weighed my shoulders down, flooding my system with a mix of comfort and depression. Yes! Yes, I do and badly want to go. Strands of light from the setting sun enhance the agony in my features. I hope it will also guide the last step I will be making in this quest. The gale’s mighty arms embraced my fragile shell. Then I saw people outside their huts. Forty-one. I asked them about the place. No one answered. No one is noticing me. Not even a single soul tried to respond. Hopeless and tired, I stopped questioning and let my senses work. Fifty-nine. I saw children playing outside. They are different in several ways – in color, in built, in behavior. I let my eyes watch their ways. Still no one has noticed me. Nearly dawn, and the sun is slowly hiding at the mountain’s back. The people went back to their house. The children took their slippers, left those sticks they used and kept them at the back of a pigeon cage. After hearing their mothers shout to their lungs, they moved like soldiers - hurrying, almost catching their breath. Then, I just only have myself, I saw my shadow slowly pointing the west. It’s sunset. Eighty-five. Slowly, the darkness killed the light. Only the glowing flowers are seen in their houses. They are laughing, must be sharing stories. But still, no one noticed me standing right at their door step. Ninety. Ninety-two. Then I felt something soft, then I twisted on the other side. Awakened. I saw myself holding a book. I remember holding this earlier and I was on number five. Still grabbing the book and is now on the seventh to the last page.

He is a typical Grade 10 student, often seen roaming around the school, asking for teacher’s signature for a memo, doing errands at the Guidance office, and asking for other necessary things to be done. The student assistance program is intended to aid deserving and hardworking students with financial needs, who are willing to spend their free time in doing extra works beyond their usual student tasks. SA’s are entitled for the waiving of school fees together with transportation and meal allowances. “He is very consistent; you don’t have to tell him what to do. In the same way, he was able to balance his studies and the tasks we are giving him,” said Ms. Marilen Paguio, school’s Guidance Counselor. Despite his tasks beyond studies, Jay Ar managed to maintain his good grades in the same way that he is a good son and a brother to his siblings. He still makes it a point to find time to hang out with them or even a small catch-up on what happened to each family member throughout the day. Truly, a man with aspirations, unwavering determination and dedication to finish his studies, will outsmart any other difficulties in life.

Being a teacher, one is expected to be multi-faceted since teachers are to deal with students with differing intelligences. Having said that, one teacher in Lipana is on top of the list when it comes to talents and special skills, that is, Ma’am Alice. MAPEH Teacher. Rondalla member. Majorette. Ballroom Dancer - Tango and Latin Dance. Singer. National Certificate holder in House Keeping. Masters Degree Holder. It is a long list and it still keeps on going on.. W i t h mo r e t ha n 2 5 years in the teaching profession, Ma’am Alicia Wenceslao, most fondly called by the teachers and students as Ma’am Alice, is a heaven-sent. Given her talents and special skills, students would never want to miss her classes because of the new learnings they will gain from her. During one of my conversation with her, she cited one of her memorable experience together with Mr. Regie, also a MAPEH teacher, when they joined and won in a ballroom contest. ‘It was unforgettable’ she said. The graceful steps accompanied by a lively music made them show a superb dance performance. Also, one of the most recent accomplishments of Ma’am Alice was the FCLNHS Ensembles, wherein a group of students performed during the MANCOM at St. Agatha Subdivision. In such opportunities, Ma’am Alice is being given

a chance to showcase her talent by sharing her knowledge on how to play musical instruments. She, on her end, supports the students with their growing inclination to music. Keeping the fire burning in her chosen career, her lifetime vocation, Ma’am Alice keeps on sharpening the saw, she gained her National Certificate on House Keeping. She went further with her Masters Degree in the region of Isabela.

Moreover, she has always been down to earth. You will happen see her walking along the school corridors and will give you a sweet smile. Upon entering its premises, I remember being so excited to know every mystery that is surrounding such beautiful place, oblivious to the fact that I may not be able to return home again. It was when I landed that one of this planet’s secrets unfolded before me and, I must say, it was the most mysterious at that. I have learned from the citizens that there was this great giant snake that has been haunting the whole planet and causing numerous deaths, though not directly. They have no idea of this predator’s identity or where it came from, at the least. It was just there. Its way of killing people, however was not much of a secret to the whole planet as its identity. It was said that it would slowly swallow the unfortunate victim whole, enveloping him with his poisonous and rotten saliva, but would not eat him – it would spit him back to the world. The places where it throws its victims vary. It could be on top of really high buildings with intense winds circling the place; it may be at the edge of the railway with a blinding light coming towards the unfortunate person; or it can also be at the middle of a high way. But on some rare cases, it would splatter its victim on a place “safe” from any possible accidents to let them tell their tale.

Its recurrence in 1977 was the most wellknown. Approximately 303 deaths among 19,040,000 ten to fourteen year-old children was caused by this nameless monster. In the same year, it also caused the death of 1,802 among 19,068,000 fifteen to nineteen year-old young people. With 10.6 people out of 100,000 being killed by this unknown predator, the deaths summed up to a total of 30, 535 in that year. Disturbingly, there was one thing common in its victims, they all had been either isolated, insulted, bullied, or violated physically and sexually. Over the years of its existence, there were speculations that the only way to get rid of the snake and finally put a stop to its hauntings was to give it a name, like the Rumpelstiltskin’s tale – a name that would have the snake be identified and understood that people it had swallowed whole and threw back to the world covered in its poisonous and rotten saliva can finally let go of very memory. But even if there are rumors flying over the whole planet, no one can really guess what name will suit the monster best. I can now feel its drool bathing me, the poisonous saliva pouring over me like big raindrops sent by the furious clouds. The sight of its mouth widely opened clearly states it is ready to welcome a new guest. My time is seriously running low. Can you now answer my question? Please, I badly need your help. What? It is never denied that the world is slowly being filled with plastics – nearly all materials and furniture, kitchen wares, personal stuffs are made of plastic. Most common than not, such plastic materials are thrown away irresponsibly after being used. Thus, seeing all those plastic everywhere will definitely give us a bigger problem sooner or later. With all these known problems, a company called the The Tzu Chi foundation made a revolutionary effort through the recycling method of turning plastic bottles into durable, comfortable and affordable fabrics that can be turned into clothes, blankets and other fabric materials. The efficiency of the process is being improved as the company strives to make it perfect. The bottles will soon be yarn but a lot must be done first. The final color depends on the bottle thus the first step is recycling, sorting, shredding and turning the materials into One kilo of recycled yarn is about 70 bottles. Recycling bottles into cloth is more efficient that directly processing the oil into fibers. The conservation of plastic bottles into Polyester will give us the following benefits: Energy Conservation – 50%; Air Pollution Reduction – 60%; Water Pollution Reduction – 20%; Solid Waste/ Landfill Usage – 90%. Amazingly, the final cloth is soft and fine. According to Huang Huade, the founder and administrator of the Tzu-Chi Foundation in Taiwan, “You must give people what they want, even if this is recycled, we want it cozy, beautiful and elegant.” He also instructed that it must have a human touch. One key to this technology is that the material purity must be maintained. Thus working on this must have painstaking care. Therefore, how do to turn plastic bottles into cloth? 1. Plastic bottles are collected and are delivered to bottle recycling centers.

2. After such, plastic bottles will be shredded. Shredding the plastic will remove the remaining amount of liquid inside the bottle. 3. Sorting separates the clear plastics from the colored ones. Clear plastics can be made into white clothes materials that can be dyed. Such stem is an extremely valuable process. Clear plastic bottles have colored lids and stickers on them. 4. The shredded and sorted plastic materials will undergo a filtering process. After all the sorting and filtering, what is left is a pile of clear plastic that will be turned into threads. 5. The clear plastic materials will be mixed into large ovens together with light colors plastics – this will give the polyester materials a cloth like texture. 6. After about 10 hours of rotating the mixture in the oven, it will be heated in a machine at 270 degrees Celsius and will be melted down in tubes with tiny holes. Thus, the melted material will look like threads. 7. The thread like plastics will again be combined while heated to make them firm enough and will bind the bonds together. 8. At a different factory the bonded materials will be shipped and will be formed into cotton wool. 9. The cotton wools are processed and stretched and finally be made into thread collected in large bobbins. 10. Finally the collected threads are placed into a large room with rotating machines that will turn the threads into a cloth. The process of turning plastic bottles into cloth may be a seriously complicated process but it is rather easy that waiting for a single plastic cap to decompose which will take a hundred of years.

While browsing my Facebook newsfeed, I accidentally clicked on a page that shows the modern society - that fresh graduates are asking for alms; that beggars, a woman with children are given contraceptives instead of money or food; that the celebration of Earth day will only be on posters standing in front of cut-down forest tress. I also came across the scene that shows how a book may seem to be an ‘extra-terrestrial object’ when a man is trying to distinguish the ‘squarething filled with seemingly papers’ while cameras are being pointed at it. The sad truth is, being a graduate student will not give you an assurance that you will land a job. It will be a struggle on getting a company or institution, worse; you will never get a job at all, giving you no chance to prove what they got. People nowadays are dependent on the technology, more so, with social media. We are now living by the number of likes and how famous we are. We seek attention through it. Some people try to appear merciful and helpful nowadays

by posting a picture on social media and wait for the throng of likes and smileys to be given by their friends. We must have forgotten the real value of what of helping that we are using it for mere publicity. We are also becoming innocent with things that were long existing be were depreciated. In our efforts of attaining better convenience, where everything is offered on just a click, we tend to forget the things that have established their importance back in the times of the early scholars and their predecessors. At one point, nature is suffering. With all the technological advancements, it will be an ironic thing to celebrate the Earth Day when everything in nature is forsaken and damaged. There may come a time that the future generation will only have the concept of buildings and not of fields and farm-lands. They will no longer know the difference of a swamp to a lake, nor may not see trees older than their mothers. With all those points given, it is still up to us on how responsible we will be with all the things that life is giving us. It is all for us to be competent, realistically helpful and conscious of our actions.

Diaz breaks PH 20-year Olympic Medal Drought

“Challenges are part of life. Time will come that you would just wish to give up, but you need to fight for your dreams, Believe in God and yourself, your capabilities and to all the people who believes in you.” – Hidilyn Diaz The Philippines celebrated the victory of Hidilyn Diaz for winning the silver medal in the Weightlifting category in the Rio Olympics 2016. This made our countrymen feel proud especially for the women who are now proving and showing what they can. With this, PH has finally conquered it’s another silver medal after 20 long years since the victory of Onyok Velasco’s triumph at the 1996 games in Atlanta. Diaz, a native of Zamboanga city has become the first female athlete to win an Olympic medal for the Philippines. She was also the first Filipino to medal in Weightlifting and the first non-boxer to medal from the Philippines since 1936. The 25-years old, a bronze medallist in the 2015 World Weightlifting championships and the gold medal

winner in Asia recorded a total of 200 kgs in the women’s 53 kg weightlifting division of the 2016 Summer Games on Sunday, August 7, (Monday morning, August 8 MNL time). In the snatch event, Diaz failed to lift two of her 3 attempts and tallied just 88 kg for 6th place in a tough field led by Li Yajun of China and Hsu Shu Ching of Chinese Taipei. The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) honored Airwomen 1st class Hidilyn Diaz for winning the country’s first Olympic medal, Diaz received a plague of recognition from AFP Chief General Visayas and the outstanding achievement medal from Defense secretary Delfin Lorenzana. Diaz received P 5 million pesos incentives from the government for her silver medal as stated in Republic Act 10699 or the national Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentive Act. From their home with P5 million incentives, she would like to turn the property into a gym for the next Olympians. She also received 2 million from President Duterte during her courtesy call in Davao City.

Her coach Alfonso Aldanete said that Diaz almost quit the sport in 2014 after she failed to qualify in the Southeast Asian Games. Diaz’s road to Rio began in 2014, after a rough year of dealing with losing her trusted coach, her boyfriend and a string of subfar performances compounded by a lifestyle she eventually deemed satisfying. What man can do, woman also can. This has proven Hidilyn Diaz to us, gender equality is not a big wall to our dreams, just follow what you want, who you are and don’t be shy on showing your talent, be proud of it. Accept the challenges in your life, try until you succeed, try until you are done. Try until there is no more number to count from. There are endless possibilities and there are endless of chances ahead of you. And in the long run, all those loses and misfortunes will lead you to a better you. Having been playing tennis for quite a while now, do you have specific routines before and after playing? • Yup, of course I make sure that my body is clean and I am wearing comfortable clothes, (which is important in playing) then after the game, I have to clean myself again and rest. Aside from table tennis, do you have other sports you are inclined with? • Badminton. But definitely I prefer Table Tennis because I am more knowledgeable of the rules already. What are your ways of managing your sport and your studies? • Time management. It is my way of balancing sports and studies. Going home from school, I see to it that I study first, (and the rest will come afterwards). Have you ever failed before? When and how? • Yes, I failed before. I failed when I did not won eventhough I trained and practiced hard back then, but that’s fine because I regained victory this year. So far what do you consider as your greatest achievement? • What I consider as my greatest achievement is when I won 2nd place this year because I have long waited for the time that I will win. he Chess Warriors Adrian Gurnat of Grade 8 has surprised us with his 66-move victory against to his opponent which is a grade 11 named Alexis Lapasanda in the term of Chess Championship Finals in Intramurals at exactly September 1. Age and status of life with Gurnat’s opponent didn’t pressure him a lot. Gurnat was only thirteen year-old and at an early age, he likes to play chess more than any other sport. It actually challenges him the most. With Gurnat’s tactics, his opponents fall in a trap resulting of a less queen Lapasanda. But after that, Lapasanda refused of losing so she gained more tactics from her past

games and used it in the recent game with Gurnat. The game went well until Lapasanda made a move that made the queen of Gurnat cornered. After the intense and breath-taking games, Lapasanda took title of winning that made Gurnat lose the game. Thus, he accepted the defeat. “I was confident that I will win.
