The big question going around this time of year is, “When do you decorate for the holidays?”
At my house, that’s traditionally the weekend after Thanksgiving. After a few days of excessive eating and lounging around, we tend to get a little antsy. Then it's off to the garage to gather the decorations. By lunchtime, there’s nothing left to do but put the boxes back in storage and enjoy the view and a turkey sandwich from the couch.
One year, our family went to Disney World for Halloween. My youngest was dressed as Ariel, so I, in a lobster outfit, was a giant Sebastian. Together with Nicole and our oldest, who were dressed as M&Ms, we enjoyed the elaborately costumed parades while candy came at us from all sides. To our surprise, by the next morning, the entire theme park had been completely converted to its Christmas dress. Since then, I’ve had immense appreciation for how quickly Southlake Town Square makes its many themed conversions.
With the 25th anniversary of Southlake’s Home For The Holidays happening this year, we wanted to get a little more knowledgeable about how it all came together. Our small village may not have the manpower of thousands of nocturnal elves, but there is a committed team and process that starts before Halloween.
On the morning of November 12, with Veteran’s Day decor still in effect, we caught up with the crew responsible for erecting our 30-foot friend. With smiles on their faces, this team of eight was fast at work unboxing the branches, baubles and bows that would be standing tall before day’s end.
In a few weeks, people will be whispering, “Can you believe they still have their tree up?” The one place I know they won’t be talking about is our town square.
Our best to you and yours this holiday season.
Yours in Southlake Style,

HOW THE MAGIC IS MADE
Southlake Celebrates 25 Years of Home For The Holidays
BY DAVID DUNN
LEWIS
On a perfectly blue and sunny Tuesday in November, Southlake’s Town Square’s usually calm Rustin Park is abuzz with activity. Trucks and trailers bearing garlands, ornaments, fence parts and greenery line the streets. In a short eight hours, eight workers will efficiently assemble the myriad pieces into what will soon be instantly recognizable as this year’s iteration of the city’s beloved holiday display.
Every year, the Christmas season officially kicks off in Southlake at the annual Home For The Holidays tree lighting. Along with hundreds of residents, Town Square welcomes carolers, street performers, carriages and even Santa Claus, himself. But getting the square ready for St. Nick’s arrival isn’t a one-day affair. In fact, each year initial decorations begin weeks before trick-or-treating even gets underway.

HOW THE MAGIC IS MADE
“It’s still part of our holiday tradition,” Mayor McCaskill says. “Even as those years passed and the event’s gotten bigger and bigger, it still retains that small-town, old-fashioned feel to it, which is really nice in the middle of the DFW Metroplex.”
The first Home For The Holidays event shared its founding with another Southlake staple. Shortly after the newly built Southlake Town Square was unveiled to the public in 1999, the city council came together to plan a holiday celebration that everyone could be a part of.
“It’s been quite the journey,” former city councilmember Carolyn Morris (2002-2015) says. “Back then, Southlake was just this small little town, and we were trying to build this as a way to bring the community together.”
For Mayor McCaskill, his first Home For The Holidays experience came in 2003 when he and his family moved from Arlington to Southlake.
“I don’t think it’s really changed much,” Mayor McCaskill says. “It’s become bigger and more features have been added over the years, but the overall look and feel of it has really stayed the same.”
During this year’s celebration, city vendors filtered into the streets to get ready for the holiday event. Colorful houses were put up as part of Santa’s Christmas Village inside Rustin Pavilion, and arts and crafts stations were placed on the lawn for families and their children to make homemade gifts and ornaments.
When it was time for the festivities to begin, hundreds of holiday revelers flocked to Town Square to spread tidings of goodwill. The Uptown Carolers, a singing troop that has been featured multiple times on “Good Morning America,” made their way around the square singing from a catalogue of over 70 jingles while dressed in elegant Victorian costumes. The Southlake Community Band returned to perform their own tunes in front of Town Hall. And annual fan-favorite, The Olde Tyme Carriage Co., ferried revelers around the square in their horse-drawn carriages around town.
While Texas is well known for its lukewarm winter weather, that doesn’t prevent this seasonal staple from having its own icy attractions. Prior to the event kickoff, a 12-foot-tall snow hill was constructed for children to slide down, while ice sculptors carved bold and stunning pieces from 150-pound ice blocks. For its 25th year, Home For The Holidays introduced a brand-new ice skating rink that will run through Jan. 18 and cost $15 through the Geoji ticketing app.
“Every year, we always try to come up with something different,” Mayor McCaskill says. “As Home For The Holidays grows bigger, it’s important to keep introducing new and unique entertainment options to keep things fresh and interesting.”
But some of the best things are often left unchanged. The evening tree lighting is always the main event, and this year it shined brighter than Rudolph’s nose. Not only did the beaming white lights illuminate the entire square, but the display took cues from Stars & Stripes and launched a spectacular fireworks show for the grand finale.

GRACE GALA ENJOYS RECORD-BREAKING EVENT
In early November, the Grapevine Relief and Community Exchange held its 21st annual GRACE Gala at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center. Emceed by NBC 5's Laura Harris-Means and hosted by Theresa and Justin Mason of Grapevine, the black-tie event had more than 750 supporters in attendance. For the 16th year in a row, Classic Chevrolet Fleet & Commercial was the event's presenting sponsor— leading a lengthy list of the most generous businesses and community partners around. The event turned out to be a "record-breaking success" in part due to its abundant live and silent auctions. Generous supporters tried to outbid each other during auctions for luxury trips to Maui, the Bahamas, the Amalfi Coast and Portugal. "On behalf of the Board, Staff, and most importantly, the thousands that will be able to receive needed help this coming year because of your generosity, I want to say thank you to our community for helping GRACE see a record-breaking Gala this year," said GRACE

MILAN GEORGIA NAMED VETERAN OF THE YEAR
The city of Southlake was proud to honor one of its hometown heroes during the annual Veteran’s Day ceremony last month. A Vietnam veteran who flew combat missions, Capt. Milan Georgia is a well-decorated pilot who’s earned multiple accolades throughout his military career, including two bronze stars, two Purple Hearts and 17 Air medals. When he moved to Southlake, he continued to serve in other ways, volunteering with the Metroport Rotary Club, the Southlake Arts Council, SPIN and the Veterans Memorial Focus Group that’s working to bring a veterans memorial to Southlake. For his many years of service, the city was proud to recognize him alongside 14 other local veterans in front of the steps of Town Hall. “It has been a true honor getting to know Capt. Georgia and witness firsthand the passion and dedication he brings to serving our community,” says Robert Briggs, economic development and tourism director. “Being named Southlake's Veteran of the Year is a well-deserved recognition of his lifelong commitment to service — both on the battlefield and here at home.”
DRAGON BOYS XC, CADEN LEONARD WIN CONSECUTIVE STATE TITLES
The Dragons boys’ cross-country team won its sixth consecutive 6A state title, defeating runner-up Austin Vandegrift by a mere 4 points, 49 to 53, at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock on Nov. 1. The win was not only the team's sixth straight state championship but also the 15th consecutive year they have finished either first or second at the state meet. In the effort, junior Caden Leonard also won his second consecutive individual state title with a time of 14:50. "We are incredibly proud of our runners and their performances at the state meet and throughout the season," Southlake Carroll Head Coach Justin Leonard said. "Winning a state championship is a significant achievement, reflecting the dedication and hard work of our athletes. Securing six championships in a row is truly remarkable."

COMMISSIONER GARY FICKES HONORED
On Nov. 7, Tarrant County commissioners officially renamed its courthouse after former Southlake Mayor and longtime Precinct 3 Commissioner Gary Fickes. A native of Houston, he first moved to Southlake in 1982 and served as its mayor from 1989 to 1996, key growth years for the city. Serving his community for four decades, he was first elected to the position of county commissioner in 2006 and will serve through the remainder of 2024 after choosing not to seek reelection last month. During his 18-year tenure as commissioner, Fickes championed many causes, from transportation, healthcare, and economic development to quality of life for Tarrant County seniors. "It takes a team— you can't do it by yourself," Fickes said at the ribbon cutting held in his honor. "It's been a really fulfilling time for me and, I hope, for the taxpayers. That's who we work for and that's something we can't ever forget."

A CHANCE FOR A NORMAL CHILDHOOD
Christ’s Haven Provides A Family Model Of Care
"Christ’s Haven For Children has been walking alongside families for 70 years, showing hope for a brighter future.”
— Cassie McQuitty, Christ's Haven CEO
Earlier this year, a single mom going through a rough patch had no family network or support and became homeless. She made the brave decision to place her child at Christ’s Haven while she got back on her feet.
Their life had been unpredictable with a lot of moving around. Her daughter wasn’t used to a regular bed time, school schedule or dinner routine. Slowly but surely, at Christ’s Haven those types of routines became the norm. She was able to have typical childhood experiences like classroom holiday parties, riding a bike outside, going to church and making new friends.
Once the mother had forged a more stable situation, the case managers and houseparents worked together and celebrated their reunification. Several weeks later, the mother reached out and proudly said that she has kept her daughter on a similar routine and sleep schedule, making a huge difference for them both.
This is one of many success stories that help keep the Christ’s Haven team focused on their mission. Now in its 70th year, the organization has stayed true to providing a family model of care, believing that every child deserves typical childhood experiences and nurturing caretakers in a consistent home environment.
Christ’s Haven For Children is a nonprofit organization centered around the core values of Normalcy, Dignity, and Hope. Located in the north Fort Worth/ Keller area, this voluntary placement organization provides a trauma-informed, family model of care for displaced children, teens and young adults as an option outside of traditional foster care, often when a caregiver has exhausted all efforts to care for a child.
The organization includes seven different houses spread out across 58 acres where a married couple lives taking care of around 5-8 children. Throughout the day, kids are riding their bikes, playing at the playground, and older kids are working on homework. In a word, it looks like childhood.

Exceeded Our High Expectations
We’ve seen Thomas and Sharon’s thorough and professional work for many years throughout Southlake. It was always evident to us that they do such an incredible job and take an immense amount of pride and care in their efforts. It was never a question for us who we wanted to work with when it was our turn to sell our home. Our expectations were high given all we have already known about their work. Yet somehow, they still went above and beyond and beat all our expectations. Literally everything they told us came true, from their market expertise to timeline, prep work and process. They were both honest, professional, experienced, knowledgeable, incredibly responsive and very clearly caring about us and our family. If I had to do it over again, there is not one thing I would change about the experience and process. Thomas and Sharon guided the process in an incredibly smooth and professional manner from start to finish. Thank you guys for all of your hard work! It was truly a joy to work with you on a very important step in our family’s life.

Thank you so much to BillyGO and Christopher for an excellent job replacing our garbage disposal. He did a great job telling us what was wrong and recommending parts or options to help budget. Such a great guy! You were so kind to share our story with your BillyGO family! We’re blown away by the generosity and so thankful. Many blessings to come to you and your family. I love our Grapevine Community.

Friendly, Professional and Helpful
Richard and Kevin were amazing! They came out and worked hard and diligently to repair our plumbing issues. They were friendly, professional and helped explain everything that happened. When we found new mold from the plumbing issues, they tackled it like champs and spent the whole day with us. I love that they test and report their work, showing us before-and-after pictures to help us see the mess we had. I’m so grateful for these two. I have enjoyed every interaction with BillyGO and their employees.

ELSA KACKLEY
Caring, Savvy, Smart and Knowledgeable
Elsa is an extraordinary realtor! I have witnessed Elsa work her magic in a variety of scenarios and price points, each with its unique challenges. She is always professional and endlessly attentive. Real estate is her calling. During the sale of my most-recent house, we had a very difficult buyer’s realtor to contend with, but you would never know it. Elsa handles everything that comes her way with grace and ease. Her professionalism and focus on my goal to sell my home never wavered. Having COVID and being out of the country didn’t stop her from working my sale every single day of her “vacation.” She is unstoppable! She has sold three homes for me, all for over asking price. She is a super star, she is caring, she is savvy, she is smart and she knows real estate law. Do yourself a favor and hire her as your real estate agent. You can trust her to give you her best for the sale or purchase of your home.
— Annisa V.
Absolutely Outstanding
Working with Elsa was a truly exceptional experience from start to finish. She helped us to buy and sell a property in a very short space of time. From the moment we met, she demonstrated an impressive understanding of the market and a devoted commitment to helping us find the perfect home. She was always available and went above and beyond to ensure we felt confident and supported in every decision, taking the time to explain our options, answer our questions and make the process feel seamless and enjoyable. If you are looking for a realtor who combines expertise, honesty and kind care for clients, look no further than Elsa Otero Kackley.

Thrilled With The Results
Susan and her staff were a joy to work with on our living room redesign. My goal was to design everything around a single piece of art, and I couldn't be more thrilled with how it turned out. We had a truly collaborative process, merging our current collectibles with new pieces and testing various options to ensure I was confident and in love with every selection. We are all so thrilled with the results.
— Andrea W.
A Consummate Professional
Susan is the consummate professional. She took the time to ask questions until she had a very clear picture of what we wanted. She didn't try to sell or hype anything but showed a genuine desire to do the best job possible for us. And she has done just that and more.

I have recently started services with the Law Offices of Kate Smith and was very refreshed with the plethora of ideas and concerns that Kate brought to the table. I’m just starting on the tumultuous journey, but I already feel that a smoother path has been provided for me.

AN… associate professor and a board-certified physician’s assistant for over two decades. I was experiencing severe burnout, and I took some time off to reflect on the importance of life. That was when my husband brought up my passion for candles and asked why not apply my skills and knowledge toward making my own brand. That was how Lilyfield Candles was born.
CANDLEMAKING IS A… science and an art. The process starts by securing the wick in the center of the vessel. Next, you melt the soy wax to a very specific temperature and add the fragrances, stirring the hot wax mixture for two minutes. This step is crucial to the candle-making process because it ensures the fragrance molecules bind with the soy wax completely. Once it’s ready, you pour the mixture into a vessel and let it cure for two weeks to get the best cold and hot throw possible.
EVERY CANDLE COLLECTION IS MADE IN… small batches to ensure the highest quality and attention to detail. I am very proud that all of my candles are free from paraffin, phalates and other potentially hazardous substances. I specifically want my candles to be all-natural, which means using organic soybeans, clean wood wicks and nontoxic scents. I look very closely at all the chemicals in my products, because I don’t want my customers burning anything that might be considered toxic.
ONE UNIQUE THING ABOUT LILYFIELD CANDLES IS… every candle comes with its own motivational message. How it works is you scan the QR code that comes with the order, and an inspirational video will play that explains the meaning behind the name and how to apply it
to your life. I find that many people get burned out easily, that’s why I want to give them a moment to pause and inspire them to pursue a life lived well.
PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE THAT THE POWER OF SMELL IS… the strongest link to recalling memories. Unlike other senses, your sense of smell has a direct connection to the brain’s limbic system, which is responsible for emotion and memory. If you think of an apple pie, that scent conjures up nostalgic memories of when you were a kid watching Grandma bake in the kitchen. A simple whiff can unlock a flood of memories that brings past experiences vividly back to life.
I WANTED TO CONJURE UP… good times and feelings of being thankful with my Christmas line of products. “Miracles” evokes the pine and fir you’d smell off of a Christmas tree, while “Enchanting” smells like a peppermint mocha you’d order from Starbucks. And the woody, cinnamon clove scent of “Believe” evokes the feelings of Christmas Eve, sitting around the fireplace and spending time with your family.
ONE PEARL I’VE LEARNED THROUGH CANDLEMAKING IS… to be open and flexible to change. There’s a lot of moving pieces to this, whether it involves manufacturing, packaging, taking photos, posting on social media or running your online marketplace. You can’t be stuck in your own way of doing things, because that’s the quickest way to fail.
I JUST WANT TO BE AN… inspiration for people. Many people have invisible struggles with anxiety and depression, that’s why it’s important to spread joy in whatever small ways we can — especially during the most wonderful time of the year.
CHRISSY HOLLAND FIVE MINUTES with ...
local FLAVOR
From beautiful smokey interiors to the sizzling sounds and steamy aromas coming from the kitchen, it’s no secret that Southlake’s many steakhouses are the star attraction of its dining scene. While there are several restaurants to wine and dine at, few have the longevity or significance of Kirby’s, which just celebrated 25 years atop the city’s fine dining landscape.
The original Kirby’s Charcoal Steaks was originally established by B.J. Kirby in 1952. His father, Jesse, ran a series of pig stands in seven states widely credited with popularizing
the “drive-in restaurant” concept. While his fa ther’s franchise regularly sold over 50,000 pork sandwiches a week, B.J. was more interested in introducing elevated fare to the more focused market of Dallas. Following up on his father’s suc cess, B.J. opened their namesake Kirby’s in Lower Greenville and successfully ran it for 33 years un til his retirement in 1987.
Remembered fondly for being the go-to place for first dates, anniversaries and special occa sions, it didn’t take long for Dallas diners to miss the fine dining experiences Kirby’s provided. That was why in 1993, B.J.’s next-door neighbors, Jim

Ingram and Monte Hough, bought the original recipes and reopened the restaurant in 1995. From there, the franchise expanded into opening four new locations, including in Southlake in 1999 — the same year the ribbon was cut on Southlake Town Square.
“We like to say we’re the original steakhouse in Southlake because we were the first ones here,” marketing director Ashley Avery says.
Embracing a rich mahogany aesthetic with warm tones and ambient lighting, Kirby’s delivers the traditional steakhouse experience with modern and elegant flair. The main dining area can seat over 100 people around its central fireplace, while the private dining rooms can host an additional 80 guests. Hundreds of Kirby’s finest award-winning bottles can be seen from their forward-facing wine rack, and the bar area has an adjacent lounge that transforms into its own miniature jazz venue when live music starts playing on the
The white tablecloth, wine and jazz-filled setting is only part of Kirby’s appeal. The star of the show is its all-natural midwestern prime beef, which is dry-aged in house 14 to 28 days. Entrees range from 16-ounce New York Strip steaks to 24-ounce ribeyes, but the most popular selection by far is the center-cut filet mignon, which is pressed in cracked peppercorns and served on top of a creamy cognac pepper sauce. For the month of December, the steakhouse will also have a hefty prime rib take-home feast to feed up to 12 holiday
Far from its only offering, the exquisite establishment also has an extensive selection of seafood dishes prepared by executive chef Javier Davalos. Joining the Kirby’s team when he was just 16 years old, chef Davalos started his career as a dishwasher in Southlake before beginning training as a sous chef. Now as the executive chef over 20 years later, he updated the menu to introduce new entrees across all five locations, including the pan-roasted sea bass with lobster risotto and the parmesan and hazelnut-crusted redfish. Every dish even comes with their own perfectly complemented wine pairing, with over 500 different varieties curated by their in-house sommelier.
“Each component has its own role in the dish, all the way from the seasoning and preparation method down to the sauce that finishes it,” chef Davalos says. “It’s all about good-looking presentation and making sure the flavors complement each other in a way that showcases my style.”
Between its elegant atmosphere, high-quality cuts and specially catered service, it’s clear Kirby’s continues to earn its moniker as Southlake’s original steakhouse.
“We’re incredibly honored to have served the Southlake community for the past 25 years,” general manager Thomas Alexander says. “This milestone is a testament to the loyalty of our guests, the dedication of our amazing staff and our commitment to providing an extraordinary dining experience. We’re excited to celebrate this occasion with the community that has supported us all these years.”
A Tale Of Tamales
Tamale & Salsa Company Delights
With Tiny Parcels Of Holiday Joy
Anyone who has spent a holiday season in Texas has undoubtedly come across a store or vendor selling piping hot parcels of meaty corn husk-wrapped goodness. Tamales have a rich tradition in Latin America, especially around special occasions, so it’s no wonder these tasty treats have found their way onto countless Christmas tables.
Jack and Racquel Morehead, owners of the Farmers Market of Grapevine and Grapevine Tamale & Salsa Company, have both had a deeply ingrained love of tamales since childhood.
“When we were kids, we would often go to the farmers markets with our fathers,” Jack recalls. “There would always be somebody there selling tamales, and it was probably the most exciting part of both of our days. It was just such a big part of our families to have the tamales.”
When the couple founded Main Street’s now-beloved Farmer’s Market in 2009, they knew this Latin American staple had to play a role. They began honing their skills making the notoriously labor-intensive treats, which involves soaking corn husks, creating the masa, fillings and salsas and then assembling, ultimately creating the Tamale & Salsa Company.
“It's a very long process,” John explains. “When the hatch chile harvest came in this year, our daughter would arrive at 5:30 in the morning, often not finishing until 9 at night. That's why we don't make every single flavor — we specialize.”
While you can certainly find traditional pork or beef versions, the Moreheads are known to have fun with their fillings. Depending on the time of year, some of their biggest fan favorites include Hatch Pepper, Jalapeño Popper and Sausage and Potato. For a sweeter option, customers go crazy for their seasonal Pumpkin Spice Pecan, Apple Pie and Fudgy Brownie tamales — especially around the holidays.
“Christmas is traditionally the busiest time of year here in Texas,” Racquel notes. “The week before Christmas, everybody's buying at least a dozen tamales. Some people buy eight to 10 dozen tamales. They're awesome gifts.”
Given the market’s prime location on the Christmas Capital of Texas’ Main Street, you won’t want to miss snacking on fresh, hot tamales while taking in the Christmas sights.

Add More Sparkle To Your Life Coupes Turns Popping Bubbles Into An Everyday Affair
Coupes co-owners Eric Chiappinelli and Amanda Hale would wholeheartedly agree with Oscar Wilde's sentiment that "Only the unimaginative can fail to find a reason for drinking Champagne." Nestled in the vibrant heart of Dallas' Shops of Highland Park, their champagne bar has unquestionably become the place to go for an elevated effervescent escape with friends or loved ones, no matter whether you're toasting to a new year or a Tuesday afternoon.
Less than two years after its opening, Coupes has already carved a niche for itself with an extensive, carefully curated list of Champagnes. It also recently earned a distinguished place among the Bureau du Champagne, USA's prestigious list of the Top 10 Bars and Restaurants for Enjoying Champagne in 2024. As the only establishment in Texas to receive this accolade, the bar has unquestionably proven its bona fides.
The bar showcases around 50 labels available by the half or full bottle, including iconic names like Perrier-Jouët and Veuve Clicquot, as well as 15 sparkling options by the glass. It also boasts a formidable list of sparkling and still wines from France and Texas, not to mention standout cocktails.
The food menu, developed with Michelin star-winning chef Bruno Davaillon, features French-inspired offerings like quiche, caviar, and delightful Gruyère cream-filled gougères, aka choux pastry cheese puffs. And for those who doubt bubbly libations can also pair perfectly with more quotidian fare, there’s even a scrumptious burger that will make you reconsider.
"Champagne is more than just sparkling wine — it's an art form, and we've built our entire concept around this understanding," remarks Eric Chiappinelli. "We are honored to be recognized by the Bureau du Champagne, USA… as we continue to share our passion for this exquisite wine."
A lively and welcoming scene is set by a well-honed music selection and an interior infused with pops of sparkle in the pink quartz bar and booths clad in an almost-Tiffany's blue. There couldn't be a more apropos setting to decide what kind of Brut most suits your fancy. That’s a New Year’s resolution we can get behind. Photos by Kathy Tran.

Wet Rooms
ow more than ever, homeowners are embracing the customization of their most private room, right down to the air-drying toilet seats — resale values be damned. Far from your mother’s “loo,” today’s wet rooms are often built without barriers like shower doors or trays to provide a more open spa-like environment. Houzz, a leading platform for home building, remodeling and design, has released their “2024 U.S. Bathroom Trends Study,” which explores this trend and the top styles, features and materials people select when choosing to invest in their personal priorities over maximizing their home’s resale value.
The reasons for creating a wet room can be diverse. However, most go this route to create a better use of space and add a new aesthetic while also updating fixtures throughout. In addition to removing typical barriers, wet room designs also level the floor, guiding water to a drain typically located in the shower zone. The entire space, including tiled walls and floors, is sealed with a waterproof membrane to prevent water damage. This overall design creates a seamless, eye-sweeping aesthetic that is not only calming
Claw-foot tubs are now taking a back seat to a more modernized version of free-standing flatbottomed and water-efficient tubs that are now center stage. When it's time to take a seat, the report shows that more than two in five renovating homeowners are installing toilets with a bevy of specialty features. At the top of the list are bidet toilet seats with and without water pressure and those with self-cleaning function-
Whitening isn’t just for teeth – it's also for today’s bathroom remodels. White and off-white shades are overtaking grays across the board. Lighter, natural wood tones are also gaining prominence in vanities, cabinets and even ceilings of today’s updated bathrooms. As always, pops of color are added in tile selection where many are opting for horizontally- or vertically-stacked rectangular tiles in hues of lighter

Choo-Choo Into The Chapel
White's Chapel Celebrates The Season With Custom-Made Railroad Display
Fa milies looking for a fun, free Christmas tradition are in luck, as White's Chapel's historic annual miniature railroad has pulled into the station. This beloved local custom has evolved to include many of Southlake’s cherished establishments, and better yet, the display was built with care by city residents who can’t get enough of the holiday cheer their hard work brings.
Enlisting the help of engineer and locomotive enthusiast Hal Bryan in 2016, White’s Chapel began building the framework for their very own model train masterpiece that would soon grow into quite the spectacle. Collaborating with a team of 35 to 45 volunteers, Hal spent the summer constructing 20 modular tables to form the base of the railroad.
After hundreds of hours of work, the set made its debut at White’s Chapel just in time for holiday revelers to marvel at all of the little details. Church members donated every model train in this magnificent display, some dating as far back as the 1930s. Today, the display includes miniature replicas of Southlake’s most beloved local landmarks,
including Town Square and Town Hall, recreational parks and gazebos, shopping boutiques, grocery stores, restaurants and even a Southlake water tower. The scene also includes portions of the Fort Worth Stockyards.
When asked what fulfilled him most about creating the display, Hal explained that seeing awe-inspired eyes and little noses pressed against the plexiglass surrounding the display would always be the greatest reward he could’ve asked for. Between all of the trains chugging along sand an authentic re-creation of the city it calls home, White’s Chapel’s railroad display is embracing the spirit of the season.
