lifting up community

Together, everyone achieves more. It’s a well-worn statement from the boardroom to the locker room and everywhere else in our community. No matter how big or small your contributions may be, giving back locally can create a ripple effect of positive change, encouraging others to also get involved.

Take, for example, Dragons Care, whose mission it is to support Carroll ISD teachers, staff and SROs in facing unforseen hardships. Before it grew into a city and school-wide network of volunteers donating thousands to staff in need, it was the brainchild of one concerned Dragon mother.

Then there's Southlake Style’s own office manager Kelly Rose. A 10-year breast cancer survivor whose personal story of resilience and community support is one our team cherishes every day. After a decade of participating in cancer walks, fundraisers, screening clinics and mentoring her fellow sisters in diagnoses, she’s found her home locally as a board member of the Southlake-based Me Squared Cancer Foundation. When the Dallas Cowboys got word of Kelly’s inner strength and caring nature, they made her an honoree of this year’s Star Survivors campaign recognizing survivors who have made an exemplary impact on breast cancer awareness.

A short drive away, Chip and Joanna Gaines' revitalization efforts in Waco have been nothing short of amazing. Through their thoughtful restoration of outdated homes and neglected properties, the couple has sparked economic growth, community pride and inspired worldwide tourism to their hometown. The “Fixer Upper” family’s newly renovated Hotel 1928 was recently named one of the world’s top 100 best new hotels by “Travel & Leisure.” If their work wasn’t enough, perhaps our feature will inspire you to start planning a visit of your own.

These are but a few examples of how even the smallest contributions by just a few people can help lift up an entire community to new heights.

Yours in Southlake Style

Southlake’s Star Survivor America’s Team Rolls Out The Pink Carpet For Kelly Rose

Ev ery year, the Dallas Cowboys and Susan G. Komen hand-pick a select group of breast cancer survivors to recognize as part of their Star Survivor program. For its 10-year anniversary, the sports organization brought 10 survivors to AT&T Stadium for a weekend full of special experiences. Southlake Style’s own office coordinator, Kelly Rose, was one of this year's recipients, and she celebrated with an anniversary of her o wn — being 10 years cancer-free.

The weekend began with an exclusive tour of The Star in Frisco, where Kelly and the rest of the Star Survivors met with Dallas Cowboys players including Dak Prescott and Cee Dee Lamb. Later, they met with the DCC cheerleaders and performed their own high-kick routine. After that, the group was treated to a private party sponsored by Kendra Scott, where they enjoyed mimosas and

picked out their favorite jewelry pieces. On Saturday, the Jerry Jones family bus picked up Kelly and her pink siblings for a private tour of AT&T Stadium.

The four-day extravaganza culminated on Oct. 13th, where all of the survivors watched the game from their own private suite. But before kickoff, Kelly and company got their moment in the spotlight when Charlotte Jones Anderson and Sam Williams presented them with pink corsages on the field, celebrating their journeys of overcoming cancer.

“Because of this whole experience, I now have nine new survivors that I’ll have as friends for life,” Kelly expresses. “We have a bond that will never be broken, and I’ll always be grateful to the Dallas Cowboys for giving that to all of us.”

DRAGON BAND EXCELS AT BOA

For the first time in the program’s history, the Dragon Band finished in the Top 5 at the Bands of America regional championship. Held on Oct. 12, Bands of America saw 29 programs from across the state come to Prosper ISD Children’s Health Stadium to see which marching band is the best in Texas. Performing its show “Aquarium,” the Dragon Band finished with a final score of 84.15, which is Southlake Carroll’s best BOA finish ever. Hot off of the heels of their competition victory, the Dragon Band continued its successful streak by finishing with superior ratings at the UIL Region 31 contest and will participate in the area contest in early November.

WHITE’S CHAPEL HOSTS CLASSIC CAR SHOW

The first annual “Yesterday To Today” car show was a smashing success at White’s Chapel in Southlake. Featuring 92 car collectors’ automobiles, hot rods and motorcycles, the show exemplified some of the most unique vehicles around the area along with food trucks and live entertainment. With awards handed out for best supercars, sports cars, Kids’ Choice and Best In Show, the event raised $23,500 for the Texas Area Food Bank, which will provide 115,000 meals throughout the area.

Southlake Carroll is aiming to wipe out kids' cancer with its newest fall fundraising challenge. Partnering with local hospital systems, including Children’s Health Medical Center, Cook Children's Hospital and Medical City Healthcare, the Carroll Student Council’s “Wipe Out Kids Cancer” fundraiser will support families that are directly impacted by pediatric cancer in the area. Donations will be accepted through Nov. 22 and can be made through the Carroll Student Council’s website.

DRAGON BOYS WIN REGIONAL XC CHAMPIONSHIP

The Southlake Carroll boys’ cross-country team came out on top of the Region 1-6A cross-country championships last month. The boys took home their second consecutive regional title, while the girls finished in third. This meet marks the 28th consecutive year the girls qualified for the state meet, while the boys qualified for the 15th year in a row. “We are incredibly proud of our runners' performance at the regional meet,” Head Coach Justin Leonard says. “Competing in such a competitive region, they rose to the challenge and earned their spots at the state meet. Our boys are excited to defend their state title, while the girls are eager to reclaim the championship.”

SOUTHLAKE CELEBRATES THE LIFE OF “PAPA” BILL LAFAVERS

Last month, the community came together to honor the memory of Feedstore BBQ’s “Papa” Bill Lafavers. Passing away on Oct. 7 at the age of 87, “Papa” Bill is considered by many to be the heart and soul behind Southlake’s longest-running family establishment since 2001. In addition to founding Southlake’s favorite barbecue, “Papa” Bill also enjoyed a long and successful executive career in the spirits industry. When he wasn’t working, he and his wife of 65 years, Phyllis, dedicated their time to outreach programs at White’s Chapel Methodist Church. With hundreds coming out to show support for the Lafavers family during his visitation, it goes without saying that “Papa” Bill left behind a lasting legacy in Southlake that will never be forgotten.

DIWALIFEST LIGHTS UP TOWN SQUARE

The seventh annual DiwaliFest returned to Southlake Town Square last month. With hundreds gathering for the annual festival of lights, DiwaliFest was filled with food, music and Bharatanatyam dance routines that paid tribute to Indian culture and traditions. Families got to keep the little ones entertained with arts and crafts and photobooths, while clothing and jewelry exhibits tapped even deeper into the region’s rich cultural heritage. By the end of the night, DiwaliFest went out with a literal bang thanks to a vibrant display of fireworks.

Topping the list is the $27.5 million estate located at 1469 Sunshine Lane in Southlake, which has three levels of exquisite entertainment options such as an indoor theater and basketball court, a bowling alley, an indoor trampoline park and a nine-car garage. Westlake rounded out the list with three additional luxurious properties, including a $11 million home at 1405 Ridge Circle, a $10 million home at 1621 Meandering Way Drive and a $9.5 million home at 2102 Cedar Elm Terrace.

Southlake Carroll finished third at the 6A state water polo championships last month. This is the third consecutive year that the Lady Dragons qualified for state after finishing first at regionals. DURHAM RALLIES BEHIND PEANUT BUTTER DRIVE

In recognition of Hunger Action Month, Southlake's Durham Intermediate collected over 500 jars of peanut butter and raised $1,000 to benefit the North Texas Food Bank. The annual peanut butter drive was introduced to the school by former student and NiHao Food Bank Initiative Ambassador Athena Wen to support those in need during the holiday season. "Durham’s participation in this year’s peanut butter drive has been outstanding, and their generosity will help spread hope to children and families facing hunger," says Johnny Jenkins, manager of strategic initiatives at the North Texas Food Bank.

Their signature Master Tox treatment is a blend of different modalities combined to effectively restore balance from the inside out. However, this isn’t the kind of treatment that will send you off to dreamland. Through the use of specific massage strokes and noninvasive tools, their skillful technicians work to restore lymphatic flow, resulting in the release of toxins, reduction of water retention and relief from bloating. Besides physically noticeable results, devotees also claim benefits ranging from more energy and focus and less brain fog to reduced anxiety and heightened immunity.

Culture of Care

Carroll Teachers

Feel The Love From Dragons Care

WITH PHOTOS BY ADRIAN CORTES

There are over 500 educators who are part of the Southlake Carroll family, including Maureen Fauatea. As a sixth-grade math instructor, Maureen has taught at Durham Intermediate for 22 years and counting. She even met her husband, Joe, on campus during one of his busdriving shifts.

Earlier this year, tragedy struck the Fauateas without warning. Not only did Joe suffer from a surprise heart attack, but his father also passed away just a few days later. Between Joe’s recovery, hospital bills and their combined grief, it was a lot for the couple to process all at once.

“It was a rough time,” Maureen recalls. “He just got out of the hospital, and we had to go to Utah for his dad’s funeral services. We had a lot to deal with for one school year.”

with nine other Rockenbaugh parents, Virginia coordinated a meal train to ensure the family was provided for throughout the week.

“She came home a couple of days later, and we did this ‘Welcome Home’ celebration in her front yard,” Virginia recalls fondly. “We had flowers, cookies, all sorts of baskets, and I had the neighbor across the street videotape it for me. She was so excited to come home. That’s where the whole [idea for Dragons Care] came from.”

A philanthropist and community volunteer with a servant’s heart, Virginia divides her time between caring for her two younger daughters and serving the community at large, volunteering for both local nonprofits and her school’s PTO. Knowing the pandemic would continue to be a concern throughout the year, Virginia decided to help more than one family.

“I went to my husband and I said, ‘I really think we should help people at our school who get sick,’” Virginia says. “I felt called to do this, and he just said, ‘Let’s just do it until we can’t anymore.’”

From there, that same group of 10 families became the foundation of Dragons Care and kept their pulse on the community, continuing the meal train and delivering cleaning supplies to those in need.

“It grew to 86 members very quickly,” Virginia recalls of her fledgling organization. “We brought on a few staff members as well, and they helped us become more connected to the district.”

In just its first year, Dragons Care raised $12,477, which went towards nine families and 13 staff members. While the group of big givers was initially formed in response to the pandemic, they decided to expand and cover all illnesses and injuries in 2021. The pivot paid off twice over, with over $25,697 going toward four families and 29 staff members in only its second year.

“The staff would always tell me it not only made them feel more loved by the parents, but it’s changed the environment within the school,” Virginia expresses. “It brought everyone closer together. That inspired me to keep going.”

GROWING THEIR GIVING

In 2023, Dragons Care was approved for 501(c)(3) status, officially making it a tax-exempt organization. To expand its grassroots operation and keep up with the growing number of requests, Virginia appointed a parent liaison volunteer at every school to help keep track of campus requests.

“I’m the main point of contact for any teacher or staff who have a grant request come up,” Carroll Middle School liaison Abby Ward says. “I get notified if someone fills out an interest form or if we have a teacher who reaches out. From there, I follow up for more details and forward the request to the board for review.”

After the grant request has been filed, the executive team will process the request and present it to the board of directors for approval.

“We vote based on whether it falls under one of our three criteria, which is an illness, injury or family tragedy,” Virginia explains. “It has to fall within one of those three categories. If it doesn’t, we’ll write an email listing other resources or nonprofits they can refer to. I don’t ever want our staff to feel like they don’t have options or don’t have anywhere to go, because they still have a need that has to be addressed.”

Once a grant request has been approved, the parent liaison will notify the campus principal and open an online fundraiser through Givebutter on Dragons Care’s website for donations. From there, Dragons Care members will share the campaign community-wide to raise funds for the recipient, including in email communications and on social media.

“It’s a lot of networking, thinking about who I know, what parent groups can I connect with, how do we best communicate this and get the word out to others,” Abby says.

Needs vary from person to person, which is why there are different support levels for each grant request. Level One fundraisers last for one week and are reserved for minor injuries, while the highest Level Four fundraisers will last a whole month to cover bereavements, long-term diseases and cancer diagnoses.

“We have somebody who’s walking through stage four colon cancer right now,” Virginia expresses. “Somebody just got a tumor removed from their spine, someone else is going through chemo and radiation. It’s just hard sometimes, knowing how heavy some of these burdens are that our teachers are carrying.”

When the fundraisers close and they have the money in hand, the campus liaisons will present a check to the recipients along with flowers and a personalized note. In Abby’s case, she’ll select a student to bring along so they can share the good news together.

“I just think it’s so moving for [students] to see how this affects the teachers and how grateful they are,” Abby says. “There’s raw emotions that come out — tears of happiness. Presenting these checks is the best part of the job, and the people working behind the scenes don’t get to see that.”

Maureen and Joe experienced that star treatment themselves when Abby hand-delivered their check last spring. What made it extra special was Maureen’s former student presented her with the check — it was Abby’s daughter, Marley.

“It was a full-circle moment for us,” Maureen says. “We couldn’t be more grateful for the help Dragons

At the end of every quarter, Virginia sends a followup newsletter to members with updates on the campaign’s final numbers. By maintaining communication and transparency every step of the way, Virginia builds trust with supporters and ensures their continued support for the Dragons Care mission.

“Every single dollar goes directly toward the staff members,” she says. “Having a full team to rely on, having people dedicated to helping out and having businesses always say ‘yes’ when we call — it’s simply incredible how the community has come together to support us in this.”

PAYING IT FORWARD

While Dragons Care has helped several people through tough times in just a few short years, their goals for giving have only grown. The nonprofit began accepting title sponsorships earlier this year, which led to more funds going toward grant campaigns. They’ve also increased fundraising goals, aiming to raise $100,000 by the end of the year. With $65,000 going

(L-R) Mark Flores, Jen Horsley, Virginia Hinkle, Mandy Brasch and Tina Wilkins all serve on Dragons Care's executive team.

towards 44 CISD staff members so far this year, it’s a goal well within their reach.

But for all of the volunteers and community members contributing to this caring initiative, most feel the greatest significance is seeing how it’s changing the district’s culture overall.

“I’m finding more and more often there are people who receive a grant, only to turn around and submit a request right back for another teacher they know who is struggling with something behind closed doors,” Abby says. “These teachers care about each other. They know their personal stories, and they also know what’s going on in their schools.”

Experiencing Dragons Care’s generosity firsthand has motivated Maureen to support her fellow teachers’ campaigns and pay it forward in whatever small way she can.

“These volunteers aren’t getting paid — they’re doing this out of the goodness of their hearts,” Maureen states. “To think somebody is doing that and we’re fortunate enough to benefit from it, I think it’s made us really want to help and give back.”

From the very first family to those she’s yet to meet, everything Virginia has built through Dragons Care has been in the spirit of being a good neighbor. With an entire community of volunteers and supporters standing behind the organization, its legacy of caring for Carroll’s teachers, staff and families will last well into the future.

“I think we’re just called to love our neighbor,” Virginia says. “We live in an incredibly generous community. The hearts of the people in this district are really beautiful, and they have a genuine love for our teachers. I just felt in my spirit I was supposed to help. My hope is that we can get everyone in Southlake to support our staff and join the Dragons Care family.”

n his memoir “Taste: My Life Through Food,” Stanley Tucci recounts the endearing story of how he fell in love with his wife on their first dinner date. Even though they had just finished a belt-loosening meal, she chased down a waiter to order the cheese plate because she was so enamored with the selection. Her passion for scrumptious sustenance, which rivaled his own, had him immediately smitten.

Anyone who has sat enthralled watching Tucci taste his way through the Italian countryside and reminisce about the kitchen table of his childhood in “Searching for Italy” knows that his love language is food. This is precisely what led the Academy Award-winning actor and filmmaker to partner with GreenPan to create a line of superior-performance cookware that would seamlessly

transition from stovetop to tabletop. The TUCCI by GreenPan cookware collection, exclusively sold at Williams-Sonoma, has expanded with 34 new products that draw inspiration from his Italian American roots.

The new pieces, all meticulously crafted in Italy, boast innovative design features such as cuttingedge ceramic nonstick coatings and contemporary stay-cool handles. One standout is the eco-friendly nonstick lasagna pan, designed for baking and serving beloved comfort-food favorites. Another highlight is the 4.5-quart Stanley pan, available in six colors inspired by vintage Italian sports cars. The expansion also introduces stainless-steel options, promising professional results in the home kitchen.

How To Turn Yesterday’s Leftovers Into Today’s

We’ve all been there. It’s the day after Thanksgiving, and the fridge is overflowing with more leftovers than you can handle. It’s time to start thinking about tonight’s dinner, and the absolute last thing your family wants is a repeat of yesterday’s elastic-waistband-necessitating feast.

It’s at times like these that we’re glad to know Southlake-based private chef Aly Romero. Previously featured on “Good Morning America,” “The Chew” and The Food Network, this culinary professional shared some top tips on how to upcycle your turkey and sides into an entirely new festival of flavor.

“The best strategy is to try not to use every leftover ingredient in one dish, or it will remain too Thanksgiving-ish,” Aly says. “I like to repurpose the leftovers after ‘one round’ so the family doesn't get sick of them… I want to create something that's almost unrecognizable from the original Thanksgiving dinner.”

One of her favorite options is creating a Turkey Pot Pie with leftover turkey. Add some gravy to the stock for flavor and use biscuit or pastry dough as the top — either sealed or in individual ramekins — and you’re off to the races. Along similar lines is a Turkey Shepherd's Pie, where you can layer dressing, green beans, turkey and mashed potatoes.

Let’s face it — most of the time, that poor cranberry sauce sits on the shelf until it’s past its prime. Not this year!

“Cranberry sauce turned into a baked brie with puff pastry, that's perfect!” Aly says. “Another appetizer idea is to use puff pastry in little mini cupcake tins to add brie and some cranberry sauce.. I make these for my private chef events all the time.”

If you want your leftover mashed potatoes to take center stage, she suggests turning them into potato pancakes or fritters. Just add a tiny bit of flour, egg and scallions, form the mixture into balls and put them in a pan with a little oil, and voilà — the perfect dish for breakfast or dinner.

No matter your leftover style, with a few handy ideas in your back pocket, your family will be counting the hours until you get to do it all over again next month.

Dirty Dough-zen

New Southlake Cookie Shop Is Sweet To The Core

From the ever-changing flavors of Crumbl to the heartwarming sensation that comes with a Tiff’s Treats box, there are many names that Southlake recognizes when it comes to cookie deliveries. But Dirty Dough is not a usual name, and these aren’t your usual homemade treats.

Having recently opened within Wyndham Plaza, the idea for Dirty Dough began in 2018 when the company’s founder, Bennett Maxwell, started selling freshly baked cookies out of his dorm room kitchen at Arizona State University. Six years later, what began as a small-time college side hustle has evolved into a rapidly growing franchise with over 70 stores in 28 states, with 30 more well on the way.

What sets this cookie company apart are the many decadent fillings that add another layer of delight to every bite. The Classics are always available year-round and include the traditional stuffed chocolate chip with a gooey, melt in your mouth center, while the Brookie piles on layers of brownie and chocolate chip cookie with a thick caramel core. Two great tastes come together in The Reverse, which bakes a chocolate cookie with a fudge filling inside a peanut butter cookie. Not to be outdone, the Cookies N Creme comes loaded with white chocolate chips and Oreo cookie chunks.

This sweet storefront is always experimenting with different flavors, with a rotating selection of weekly specials that features everything from cinnamon to blueberry cheesecake. If you’re feeling particularly indulgent, add extra scoops of vanilla and chocolate ice cream to turn these treats into a milkshake or a sundae.

From those looking for their next big bite to families looking to indulge in sweet moments together, Dirty Dough proves that it’s what’s on the inside that counts.

Purple Heart Recipient Stands With Veterans

There are over 1.5 million veterans living in Texas, with only 3% having earned the prestigious Purple Heart. These courageous service members injured in the line of duty stand as a testament to the nation’s finest. In Colleyville, Eric Newton proudly hangs his Purple Heart where it belongs — next to cherished photos with his brothers in arms from his tours in Vietnam and Iraq. Now serving as the senior vice commander of the DFW Mid-Cities Chapter 1512 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Eric continues to advocate for veterans, ensuring that everyone recognizes their many sacrifices for the land they call home.

I CAME FROM A MILITARY… background. My stepfather was in the Air Force, and we traveled all throughout my childhood. I went to places like Morocco, Buenos Aires. I got a little taste of going around the world and experiencing different cultures and lifestyles in different places.

THE VIETNAM WAR WAS… going on while I was still in high school, and it was just getting hot and heavy. Your choice back then was to join or get drafted. The difference was if you were drafted, you didn’t get to choose what your profession would be. So I chose to join and completed my basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana.

I ENLISTED AS… tank crew. I finished tank training at Fort Knox, and was sent to the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. The commander at that time was George Patton IV, who was the son of WWII General George S. Patton himself. I spent a year under his command.

I EARNED MY PURPLE HEART FROM A… mortar attack around Thanksgiving 1968. I was sitting down cooking my meal, and there was a stray dog hanging around our company. When the rounds started going off, I ran out to grab him and dropped him off inside our tank. That was when I got hit in the arm with shrapnel from an exploding round.

AFTER WE CAME HOME, I DISCOVERED… the 11th Armored Cavalry Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia and became their public affairs officer. When we went to Iraq in 2005, I asked if my cameraman and I could go with and do

stories on them. We got the permissions from the Pentagon, and the military sent us equipment and body armor and designated us as journalists. We were sent out with a unit, taking photos, talking to people and documenting everything that was going on over there.

THE DAY BEFORE WE LEFT FOR HOME... the unit commander sat down with us and said ‘I don’t think I’m gonna let you guys go. We’ve been here six months, and since two 55-yearold guys got here from the [11th Armored Cavalry], we’ve seen morale increase.’ From their perspective, we came there for them. That was the absolute best part of the whole [trip], knowing you made a difference in those young soldiers' lives.

MANY PEOPLE ARE UNAWARE THAT THEY… have a veteran living next door, and they may have been through a lot. They don’t ask to be thanked, so when I see somebody go out of their way to make that gesture, that makes them a good American in my eyes.

I JOINED THE MILITARY ORDER OF THE PURPLE HEART IN THE… last four years. The former senior vice commander had just passed away, and I decided to step up. You don’t want these organizations to fade away, because they’re doing a service not just for the veterans, but for the community. When veterans don’t show up to a parade or event, the community and their children don’t have exposure to see what the cost of war is. It’s our duty to get out in front of the public and show them what our service members have done for them to live free in this country.

COUPLES RETREAT

Chip and Joanna Gaines lounge in their newly-renovated Hotel 1928.

A Touch Of Magnolia Magic

Chip And Joanna’s Hotel 1928 Is Waco’s Newest Attraction

Whether it be tropical, snowbound or full of worldly arts and culture, Southlake Style readers know how to vacation. And with DFW Airport so close to home, it's easy to understand how one could miss the evolution of a down-home destination happening right under our noses.

Grapevine High alum Chip Gaines married Joanna Stevens in Waco in 2003, and they’ve been pouring their hearts into the city ever since. The “Fixer Upper” stars first brought shiplap and Waco itself into the national spotlight beginning with their first season back in 2014. A decade later, the couple have transformed

not just homes, but the city itself into a destination for anyone looking for that Magnolia touch.

Documented during the first season of “Fixer Upper: The Hotel,” now streaming on Max, Chip and Joanna took on the renovation of a 53,000-square-foot property into a boutique hotel near their famous Magnolia Market. The new Hotel 1928 opened in late 2023 and has already garnered acclaim as one of the world’s top 100 best new hotels from “Travel + Leisure” magazine. Allow this amazingly updated former Shriners temple to act as a launching point for a punch list of weekend fun and relaxation worthy of Chip himself.

The early 20th-century lodge originally designed by Herbert M. Green and Roy Ellsworth Lane, who also contributed to the city’s famed Alico building, was a sight with its square rooftop penthouse and distinctive brick and trim features that made it a downtown standout.

After decades of neglect, the building was in a state of disrepair. Chip and Joanna jumped in like they had so many homes before, not only to preserve the building’s history but to give it new life — all while documenting the process every step of the way.

The original design's intricacies are both celebrated and enhanced, and the sixth and final episode ends with the grand opening of Hotel 1928, which now stands four stories tall in the heart of downtown Waco.

“For us, this project represents everything we are most passionate about — hospitality, restoration and home,” said Chip and Joanna Gaines as the latest season was announced. “We’ve always been firm believers in the value of home as a place but also as a feeling. Our dream for this hotel is that it would serve as an extension of home to every guest who comes to stay.”

The space’s historical charm is found throughout 33 bespoke guest rooms with both traditional and premium king and queen rooms available. The decor blends well with Joanna’s sense of modern comfort and elegance that are brought to new levels in the largest rooms called the Columbus suites. The largest of the hotel’s four suites is called The Washington, where separate sleeping suites come together in a common living area that is designed especially for larger family

or group gatherings of up to 12 people.

In many instances, the original craftsmanship, including the historic terrazzo flooring, has been preserved wherever possible to offer guests a real connection to the past. Exposed beams and the original concrete floors are showcased in several rooms, adding to the building’s authentic character.

For those who’ve made the two-hour drive from DFW, the cherry on top will be enjoying brunch or dinner from the rooftop at Bertie’s. Seated amongst florally ensconced booths and plush pink sofas, Bertie’s terrace offers sweeping views of Waco along with a wide variety of dishes ranging from comforting cheeseburgers and skillet cornbreads to an elegant wild mushroom risotto and cedar plank salmon.

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT

The city is bordered by Lake Waco to the west and more than 400 acres of Cameron Park to the north, but it's the Brazos River that brings an extra element of fun and excitement to those who choose to visit downtown.

Every June, TriWaco hosts sprint and Olympic distance triathlons that start with a swim in the river and finish with a run within the breathtaking 400-plus acres of Cameron Park. More casual joggers and walkers will also enjoy a morning jaunt along the Waco Riverwalk and its wide paths that cover more than 7 miles along the Brazos.

Not to worry, taking in the sights and sounds of the river does not have to be a workout. Waco Tours of-

fers a serene and award-winning journey that sets sail from Baylor’s McLane Stadium. Those aboard this two-hour cruise, rated fourth on "USA Today's" 10 best boat tours, will enjoy sunset views as they unwind and connect, all while learning a bit about Waco's rich history. For those who have yet to get enough of Chip and Jo, Waco Tours also offers a “Fixer Upper” city tour that extends fandom to the very neighborhoods made famous on television.

A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE

Long before HGTV, Dr. Charles Alderton put Waco on the map with the unique flavors of what is still America’s oldest major soft drink. Dr Pepper was first formulated at Waco’s Old Corner Drug Store in 1885 — a full year before Coca-Cola entered the market. Those who are thirsty for some old-time Americana

should trek to the original bottling plant from 1906. Converted to the Dr Pepper Museum in 1989, the building houses the largest collection of memorabilia devoted to Texas’ favorite soft drink and the industry as a whole. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities from taste-testing newer flavors like strawberries and cream and dark berry to concocting their own favorite flavor in the Liquid Lab. Dr Pepper purists can take on the Extreme Pepper Experience, which includes a private VIP tour concluding with a celebratory Dr Pepper float. The museum’s gift shop is overflowing with swag from soda can candles and glasses to T-shirts and hats.

MORE MAGNOLIA MOMENTS

From restaurants to retail and even real estate, the Gaines own a variety of businesses in their hometown.

With its opening back in 2015, thousands of people from all walks of life have made a day out of a visit to the Magnolia Silos. The expansive shopping, dining and entertainment district is home to special events including Spring at the Silos in March, Silobration in October and Christmas at the Silos in December.

Spend the afternoon shopping for seasonally-curated home decor at the Magnolia Market or furniture and fixtures at Magnolia Home. The Shops At The Silos will inspire shoppers to hit the books at Chapter One or get some vintage sports memorabilia at No. 16 — Chip’s old baseball jersey number from Grapevine High School.

After loading up your haul, shoppers can refuel before the trip home with a stop at the Market’s many food trucks or head to Magnolia Table for a bite of Jo’s Favorite Chicken Salad Sandwich made with pecans, red grapes, chives and generously portioned on a croissant. The 1919 Pimento Grilled Cheese is another must-have with house-made pimiento cheese grilled between fresh sourdough bread.

From its history to its many updated experiences, Waco has evolved into a vibrant atmosphere that provides endless opportunities for both adventure and relaxation. Whether you want to shop ‘til you drop, take a serene river cruise, or dive into the Dr Pepper Museum, Waco is an unforgettable destination that promises something special for everyone.
