Quite often, what separates those who thrive from those who struggle are the everyday things we all call habits. From our morning coffee to our nightly Netflix and all the productive and non-productive moments in between — we are creatures of habit.

As the new year begins, we’ve put together a list of 25 items that may amplify habits you’ve been working on to optimize physical health, nurture mental and emotional wellness and make smarter financial decisions.

Amongst those I find most interesting is the use of AI to manage investment portfolios. In nearby Westlake, Charles Schwab utilizes AI through “Intelligent Portfolios” to help keep costs low and gains high.

Don’t worry if tech and finance sound a little dry – this month, we’re also serving up tastier trends. It’s 2025, and non-alcoholic beverages have taken on a life far beyond the tasteless NA beers of the Y2K era. If you’re looking to join the ranks of Dry January revelers, you’ve got options. Armed with inventive zero-proof spirits, Southlake-area bartenders have been perfecting top-shelf libations that we’ve profiled for your liberal enjoyment.

And if fitness is a habit high on your list, we’ve got a heavy dose of inspiration coming from Southlake strongman Bradford Hall. The Carroll alum and current Champions Club trainer shares his passion for the process.

Here at Southlake Style, we’re excited for another year’s journey with you. It’s our habit to highlight the best and brightest people, places, events and things that bring our community together. Here’s to a happy new year!

This 21-and-up event is free to the public, but reservations are required. Wine and snacks will be served.

New Age Weight Loss Techniques

What is Modernized Weight Loss?

Traditional weight loss strategies are overly restrictive and not sustainable. Modernized weight loss allows for food flexibility, educates on caloric budgeting, and doesn’t involve any crutches so you can achieve sustainable success and still live life to the fullest.

What are the keys to effective weight management?

Overly restrictive fad diets are unhealthy and unsustainable. The key to true, long-term weight management is consistency. The good news is, consistency doesn’t mean perfection. The 80/20 rule is a good way to look at it: 80% of the time food is fuel and you make good decisions, and 20% of the time food is fun and you can indulge. To help structure out this method you have to think ahead. Being mindful of your upcoming week can help keep you on track instead of reacting to curveballs.

What type of exercise is best for weight loss — weight training or cardio?

In order to lose weight, we must burn more calories than we eat, and exercise simply helps us burn more calories than we naturally would. A common misconception is that cardio is better for weight loss, but that’s not necessarily true. By performing resistance training, you encourage the body to retain your valuable muscle tissue which helps keep your metabolism running efficiently as you age. Since muscle burns triple the amount of calories that fat does, retaining muscle mass contributes to a healthy metabolic rate. A proper balance between aerobic exercise and resistance training is the most effective for weight management and overall health and wellness.

Are weight loss injections safe, and are they right for me?

Weight loss strategy has undergone some drastic changes recently with GLP-1 injections like Ozempic (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide). In order to safely and effectively utilize weight loss injections you must consider a few crucial things. Most importantly, you should be monitored by a practitioner regularly that has the ability to be flexible with your dosing regimen. Also, it’s highly advised you receive nutritional guidance throughout your treatment so you maintain lean mass, aesthetic appearance, and overall health and wellness.

our country to life.

Commemorating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War in 2026, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the American Battlefield Trust have partnered to create a traveling exhibition that connects modern audiences with the people and places that shaped the birth of our nation. When Southlake resident Michaelann Bush, a member of the Captain Molly Corbin DAR Chapter and chair of the America 250 Committee, heard this exhibit would be touring select cities nationwide, she immediately set to work bringing it to Southlake.

Through a combination of photographs, illustrations, maps and technology, this free, weeklong exhibit presents diverse viewpoints and experiences, touching on the journeys — both literal and figurative — of Patriots, Loyalists and even international allies. Rather than focusing exclusively on generals and famous statesmen, it introduces audiences to ordinary everyday people who personally lived through the history we recall today.

The traveling exhibit includes multiple 7-foot-tall banners and interactive digital kiosks that use storytelling and illustration. Although geared toward middle and high schoolers, this immersive exhibit engaging for history lovers of all ages who want to reconnect with their American roots.

FBLA HOSTS HOLIDAY HUNGER PROJECT

The CISD Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) worked hard to make a difference for those in need during the holiday season. Held on Dec. 15, the FBLA’s Holiday Hunger Project was a community-wide partnership with Altrusa to benefit six food banks around Tarrant County, as well as Southlake Carroll cafeteria, janitorial and lawn maintenance staff. Filling 160 gift baskets with food, $25 gift cards and handwritten notes, the community came together to support FBLA in their mission to make the holiday season special for everyone.

“UNDER OUR WINGS” STATUE SET TO ADORN SOUTHLAKE DPS

Southlake is getting an exciting new addition to its public arts space in 2025. Originally approved in February last year, the city has been developing a new piece for the west Southlake DPS station titled “Under Our Wings.” Portraying the city of Southlake logo in between two golden wings, the city has commissioned Florida artist Vito DiBari to develop the 16-foot piece in front of the station. With construction currently underway, “Under Our Wings” is expected to be completed by the summer.

up 2024 by giving back to student-athletes around the area with their annual shoe giveaway. Celebrating their 10-year partnership with Youth World in Dallas, SASO is a Southlake service organization that provides volunteer opportunities for around 500 local students. President Tracey McDevitt says their shoe drive helped more than 50 children throughout the metroplex. “Our partnership with Youth World enables us to provide meaningful, hands-on service opportunities for our members and directly impacts the lives of children in need,” Tracey says. “The squeals of excitement and joy as our volunteers fit children with brand-name athletic shoes is priceless and makes us realize that something we often take for granted could be life-affirming for another child.”

DRAGON BAND MUSICIANS QUALIFY FOR REGION

A record number of Dragon Band members will be performing in the All-Region band this spring. With auditions held early last month, Southlake Carroll saw 64 musicians qualify for the Region 31 convention, including eight in the ninth grade band, 16 in the concert band, 14 in the symphonic band, 18 in the wind symphony and eight in the wind ensemble. In addition, 14 band members qualified for the area audition round, which is the second-most qualifiers in Dragon Band history, while four also qualified for the All-State jazz ensembles, including Michael Fradkin, Nikhel Kamalia, Weston Clark and Matteo Longarini.

DRAGONS DOMINATE AT NIKE CROSS NATIONALS

Southlake Carroll’s boys and girls cross-country teams traveled to Portland, Oregon to compete at the Nike Cross Nationals alongside the Top 22 teams from across the nation. The Dragon boys finished in fourth place with a final score of 135 points. Junior Caden Leonard was named an All-American after finishing third overall with a time of 15:31, while seniors Blake Bullard and Griffin Cords and freshman Kai Gutierrez also had strong showings, finishing in 47th, 51st and 55th respectively.

“Nike Nationals has been around for 19 years, and we are proud to say that our boys’ and girls’ teams have each qualified 16 times,” coach Justin Leonard says. “Our program holds the record for the most combined Nike Nationals qualifications of any high school in the U.S., a testament to the strength, dedication and hard work of these athletes.”

CARROLL SENIOR RAISES $13K FOR SICKLE CELL PATIENTS

Ishani Gandi has a big heart. Between serving as the treasurer for the Southlake Foundation and volunteering as the youth services philanthropy officer for the American Red Cross North Texas region, the Dragon senior is always putting her best foot forward for those who need it most. Ishani’s commitment to others continues this winter with fundraising efforts towards sickle cell treatments. Volunteering with the Red Cross organization since her freshman year, Ishani’s involvement with the nonprofit has ranged from social media vlogging to community-focused health care initiatives. Throughout the month of November, Ishani led a series of community events such as car washes and bake sales to raise over $13,000 for sickle cell treatment and research.

MISS TEXAS TO COMPETE IN MISS AMERICA

From Miss Dallas to Miss Southlake, Annette Addo-Yobo has come far in the pageant world. After winning Miss Texas last year, Annette is now going after her biggest title yet at Miss America 2025. Anna has dreamed of competing in pageants ever since her family emigrated from Ghana in 1999. After she received her citizenship, Annette won her first pageant at Miss Dallas in 2022. Now, she’s looking to make history at the Miss America pageant, which will take place in Orlando, Florida, on Jan. 5. “[This] encapsulates not only the journey and work in my time as Miss Texas but also my story as an autism advocate, immigrant, first-generation American and aspiring attorney,” Annette says on Instagram. “Texas, I’m ready

RENOVATIONS PROPOSED FOR RUSTIN PARK

The Southlake city council considered multiple proposals to update Rustin Park during their regular meeting last month. Located in front of Town Hall, the renovations focus on improvements to the gazebo, pond and water fountain and all range in cost between $13 million to $34 million to be taken out of the city’s $50 million parks budget. According to city documents, the first proposal adds a restroom build-

ing, fountain shading and a patio overlook for the pond, while the second proposal includes an all-new fountain and gazebo. The third and most expensive proposal would also include additional seating, artificial turf and new fountain features. While no action was taken on the proposed renovations, the city council will review all submitted plans and circle back on the issue later in the new year.

HALL OF HONOR ANNOUNCES 2024 INDUCTEES

Eleven new inductees were announced for the Carroll ISD Athletic Hall of Honor class of 2024. The class, which will be formally inducted later this year, consists of two teams, seven athletes, one coach and one fan. Since its founding in 2011, the Carroll ISD Athletic Hall of Honor has inducted 87 Dragons who have left their marks at one of the most successful high school athletics programs in the country. Once formally inducted, this newest class will bring the hall to a total of 98 honorees. The 2024 Hall of Honor Inductees include Brian Hodges, Trevor Tacker, Nathan Chandler, Brooke Upshaw (Bible), Justin Padron, Robert Prigmore, Ross Stripling, the 2011-2012 Boy’s Cross-Country Team, the 2011-2012 Girl’s Swim & Dive Team, Coach Robert Drake and Ronnie Binion.

START 2025 WITH PEACE OF MIND

"Dave Campbell's Texas Football" is putting the spotlight on spirit teams in the Lone Star State, and Dragon Cheer was among this year’s 10 finalists. Partnering with the jewelry company Kendra Scott, the magazineaccepted votes last month for its Spirit Team Spotlight Award to find the most dedicated cheer group in 2024. With finalists ranging from Denton Guyer to San Antonio, Dragon Cheer saw plenty of support from the Southlake community in its race toward Spirit Team of

MALOUF’S CELEBRATES 15TH ANNIVERSARY IN SOUTHLAKE

One of Southlake Town Square’s fine apparel stores recently celebrated a major milestone over the winter. Originally founded in 1949, Malouf’s is a fashion merchant that offers a variety of high-end suits, jeans, shirts, dresses, shoes and accessories to fit each customer’s physique and style preferences. While the company celebrated its 75th anniversary last year, the Southlake store specifically commemorated its 15th anniversary at the same time. Between the wealth of men’s and women’s clothing options, Malouf’s always has the perfect fit.

H-E-B BREAKS GROUND ON NEW STORE

The sibling to upscale grocery store Central Market has officially broken ground on a new 126,000-squarefoot location near Grapevine and Colleyville. Breaking ground in late November, construction for the new HE-B store is slated to last for 15-16 months, with an expected opening in mid-to-late 2026. The latest store in the San Antonio-based grocery chain’s portfolio will include a full-service pharmacy, gas station, car wash and True Texas BBQ restaurant, plus it will offer curbside and home delivery services.

TWO SOUTHLAKE STUDIOS WIN INTERIOR DESIGN AWARDS

Over 200 entries were submitted into the American Society of Interior Designers’ Celebrating Texas Design Awards, and three award-winning homes came from Southlake. Winning first place in both the residential model home and home office categories, Heritage Design Studio is a local firm that has specialized in residential design and remodeling services for over 20 years. But they weren’t the only Southlake studio to be represented amongst the winners, as G. Interiors also won first place in the outdoor living category. Between both Heritage Design Studio and G. Interiors, these recognitions exemplify the very best of Southlake’s interior design studios.

PORTILLO’S OPENS IN GRAPEVINE

One of Chicago’s most popular restaurants has landed in Grapevine. Established in 1963, Portillo’s is a Chicago staple that specializes in serving street food such as Italian beef sandwiches, Maxwell Street polish sausages and Chicago-style hot dogs. With a variety of pasta, sandwiches and salad options, Portillo’s is also notorious for its signature chocolate cake, which can be chopped up and mixed into ice cream for its infamous chocolate cake shake. Now open at 460 W. State Hwy. 114, the new 6,250-square-foot restaurant features a rustic garage theme and seating for around 125 guests, plus an additional 40 on the outdoor patio.

MILKSHAKE FACTORY OPENS IN GRAPEVINE

Sweets lovers, rejoice — Grapevine Station is officially home to a tasty new milkshake shop that is sure to delight locals with its decadent offerings. Milkshake Factory, a franchise brought to Texas by longtime Southlake residents Anna and Scott Sheehan, features handspun milkshakes made from rich, expertly crafted homemade ice cream. In addition to the creamy milkshakes, the shop offers a range of dairy-free shake options, as well as chocolate-covered fresh strawberries, an array of chocolate bark and other seasonal confections. "We were captivated by [franchise founder's] family's four-generation legacy of serving their community with cherished family chocolate recipes," Anna says. "We were excited about the opportunity to grow our own family-oriented business in Texas."

25 tips for a healthy, wealthy, wise new year for

We’ve compiled a few pointers covering fitness, nutrition, mental health and finance. From adopting a budget-friendly diet to harnessing AI for financial gains, each section offers actionable insights, along with expert-backed advice to enhance your daily life.

FITNESS & NUTRITION

“ Treat your diet like you would a budget,” says Dr. Bryce Calvillo. The lead practitioner at Southlake’s SciFit Center isn’t asking for an accountant’s logbook of caloric intake – what he wants for his patients is a more balanced approach to eating and exercise. For instance, picture your diet like saving for a vacation. You have to spend wisely if you want to indulge in that trip to Bora Bora. The same goes for your caloric budget. To lose weight, you have to manage calories properly. Whether you're saving or dieting, sometimes unforeseen extras pop up. When that happens, Dr. Calvillo says it’s ok to indulge as long as you “don’t get overly restrictive” in your weight loss and exercise routines. He also advises to “balance food for fuel with food for fun,” until you start to see and feel an “adequate return on effort.”

03 . HAVE stretch goals 02 .

A LONG-TERM APPROACH TO FITNESS

— in his “New York Times” bestselling “Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity”, Dr. Peter Attia outlines a comprehensive approach to exercise by preparing for the physical challenges one might face in advanced age. By focusing on lower impact cardio sessions and functional strength training through squat, push, pull and grip exercises, the author believes you’ll be more inclined to succeed in what he calls the “Centenarian Decathalon.”

— according to Flavio Silva, the personal training leader at Westlake’s Life Time Fitness, “[there is] a growing emphasis on longevity and recovery as part of an optimal training solution.” The brand-new facility is seeing an increase in members participating in oneon-one guided stretching of their “Dynamic Stretch” sessions, where members can go through personalized movements with a specialist in 25 or 50-minute increments.

TAKE a plunge

— from the old ice bucket challenge to today’s celebrity cold plunges, taking a frosty dip seems to always go viral. Why not? The practice helps improve muscle recovery, enhance circulation and boost metabolism. Dragon cross-country coach Justin Leonard has been offering them to his 17-time state champion winning runners for years.

05 .

PUT A RING ON IT

even though the Fitbit was launched in 2007, it was the Apple Watch’s debut in 2015 that really established the wearable tech movement. Now, the Oura Ring 4 with Smart Sensing technology brings heightened accuracy and a redesigned app to help you better understand vital health information. Available in 12 sizes and six finishes, it may be the perfect fit for new year routines.

06.

Getting back to the gym — a Peloton bike was the wave of the future, until it wasn’t. The 2021 darling exercise equipment stock has since hit the floor. In its place, new community building gyms like Built4It, Crunch in Colleyville and Life Time in Westlake are proof that real-world gym memberships are flexing.

07.

Water it down

— according to the Harvard School of Public Health, the average adult needs 9-13 cups of water per day for men and women respectively. But before you fill your Stanley one more time, know the Ivy Leaguers also report that roughly 20% of our total intake comes from water-rich foods like leafy greens, vegetables, berries and melons.

08 .

MAKE EVERY BITE COUNT that’s the USDA’s tagline for focusing on nutrient-dense foods and beverages to help meet your needs within calorie limits. Kale, blueberries, nuts and spinach all fit the bill and are all conveniently found locally in a range of products at Nektar Juice Bar. Try their Popeye’s Acai smoothie (330 calories) or an Acai Bowl (320 calories) for a tasty yet nutritious treat.

H E ALTH

09 . 10 .

PHONE a FRIEND

texting and social media have turned the practice of actually speaking live into a lost art. Phone calls may be so yesterday, but so are some of your longest friendships. Go ahead and rekindle with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. You’ll be glad you did, and they will too.

DIGITAL DETOX

from juice cleanses to cardio circuits, January is the month for resets. Put tech in your rearview for a while by turning off notifications and deleting those time-wasting apps. It may be easier than a week of celery juice or CrossFit and well worth the effort (or lack thereof).

11 .

Laugh

it OFF use humor to reduce anxiety, boost mood and get a mini-workout. Take in a set at one of several DFW-area comedy clubs like Hyena’s or the Addison Improv. Did you know a good laugh can burn as many as 40 calories every 15 minutes?

12.

— many of us have pets, but those who can’t commit to a full-time family friend can still reap the benefits of the human animal bond. Volunteering at an area shelter like the Humane Society of North Texas in Keller can also help decrease anxiety and increase social and physical interactions. Beyond house pets, Ride With Pride and Loving Long Ears have been providing horse and donkey-assisted therapy right here in Southlake for years.

— remember that moleskin you have in the drawer? It's worth its weight in golden vibes. Re-engage with your inner self through journaling. From Einstein and Churchill to Lady Gaga, the practice has been proven to reduce stress, deal with trauma and set the mind in a forward trajectory.

Turn the page 14 . 15

INVEST IN RELATIONSHIPS

— because good ones help us live happier, healthier lives, that’s the bottom line from the longest scientific study of happiness ever conducted. “The Good Life” authors Robert Waldinger and Marc Schulz get into it in detail in their “New York Times” bestseller and in a companion TED talk that’s been viewed over 48 million times on YouTube.

TOSS THE TURNING

— according to the National Sleep Foundation, adults require 7-8 hours of sleep while teens require 8-10 hours despite their higher energy levels. For a restful night’s sleep, it's best to create a bedtime routine that does not include electronics but should include a quality mattress. Take advantage of the fact that Southlake has almost as many mattress stores as coffee shops and see if Sleep Experts, Casper or Purple has your Sleep Number.

— home trends are leaning away from the sterility of clean, white decor and towards more layered and cozy spaces. Don’t stress, even the smallest space can be a mental oasis with a comfy chair, a throw, some pillows and plants to help set your mind at ease.

GET TO KNOW HOW AI WORKS IN FINANCE

“AI is rapidly spreading through the finance industry,” says Mike Mills, managing principal at Southlake-based Mills Wealth Advisors. "Almost all analysts that have three to six trading screens already have one dedicated to AI programs that they use as a research assistant and a decision-making helper." An example is in portfolio comparison and portfolio generation, where artificial intelligence can compare enormous amounts of data to create different options an advisor might not have considered on their own. One drawback today is that AI really can only compare previous data, and past performance is not an indication of future performance. As AI gets access to more data from more markets over longer time periods, it will continue to get better and will be an instrumental tool to help humans make better decisions.

Rebalance your IRA — opting out of monthly paper statements has practically made individual retirement accounts a forgotten asset. Take a moment at least once each year or after a major life change to rebalance and ensure your accounts are still on track. 19 .

for

HIT PAUSE ON IMPULSE SHOPPING a weak moment on your social media feed could equal a lifetime in your junk pile. Break from the next gotto-have purchase and instead drop those dollars in an online savings account.

20 .

SAVE MORE WITH THE HELP OF AI “More and more people are choosing to use apps like Monarch Money that will track spending and locate duplicate subscription services to help save money,” says Mike Mills. Other notable apps on the market include Banktrack, Rocket Money, Hiatus and Trim.

21.

Yield is the right way — we’re not talking about pumping the brakes, we’re talking about taking advantage of today’s higher APYs. It’s easier than ever to put your money to work for you through high-yield savings accounts. Today’s online banks like Pibank, Newtek or Openbank offer security and annual percentage yields that are often at or above 5%.

Sneex-ing Into Our Hearts

Hybrid Heels From The Creator of SPANX

Are Taking The World By Storm

Si nce Sneex hit our radar - and the stores - in late summer, discussions surrounding them seem to follow a similar pattern. It starts with “Wow, who would wear those?” inevitably followed by “Hmmmm... I actually kinda like them.” The next day, it’s “I just hit ‘buy now.’” It’s no wonder the company can barely keep them in stock.

DETAILS

Sneex Material:

Lining: 100% Napa leather

Upper: mesh; suede; leather

Rubber-like sole

Price: $390-$595

Sneex.com

Love them or hate them, Sneex, created by Sara Blakely, the genius behind shapewear sensation Spanx, have captured the attention of the nation. Promising “the comfort of a sneaker with the fun of a high heel,” the hybrids have already graced the feet of A-listers from Reese Witherspoon to Mariah Carey. They even briefly sold out after topping Oprah’s Best Things List 2024.

Suffice it to say that Blakely knows her audience. The billionaire fashion mogul explains, “Sneex are my love letter to every woman

who has taken her shoes off at a party, who wears flats to work with heels in her bag, who thought her days of wearing heels were over.”

The Hy-Heel is designed to fall somewhere between formal and casual. It’s the shoe equivalent of the now-revived early aughts going-out-top with jeans trend. The shoes are made with an Italian mesh upper, Nappa leather lining, and suede for breathability and durability. Blakely also focused on widening the toe box, creating more arch support and redistributing weight more evenly between the ball of the foot and the heel.

Sneex Hy-Heels currently come in three models: The Icon, The Tepper and The Blake. While there are multiple colorways to choose from, the limited-edition Teppers in Varsity Green will undoubtedly make you the envy of your Dragon den – if you can manage to get your hands on a pair.

Get Ready For Winter Chills

Winter in North Texas may not always bring heavy snow, but as we’ve learned in the recent past, unexpected freezes can cause major disruptions. Getting ready for colder weather means a little more than pulling sweaters out from the guest room closet— it also means keeping your home and car ready so the entire family stays safe. It’s never too late – a little advanced planning can spare a lot of headaches when temperatures drop.

HOME AFTER THE HOLIDAYS

After the hustle of the holidays, stay on top of lower temperatures by first servicing your heating system and replacing worn filters. Be sure to check the insulation in attics, walls, and around windows and doors, and pay special attention to gaps that could allow for excessive heating leaks. Exposed pipes in attics and garage areas should be wrapped with insulation. When temperatures do drop below freezing for extended periods, allow for faucets to drip to avoid ice and pressure build up that could lead to broken pipes.

Once the inside is ready, take a walk around the outside to disconnect and drain garden hoses and cover all spigots with insulated caps. Schedule pool service providers to ensure all equipment is functioning properly so you don’t end up with your own personal ice rink. Also, remember to check the freeze protection settings and keep water levels above the skimmers during these colder nights.

KEEP A KIT

Unfortunately, winter weather can also bring gridlock to the state’s electrical systems. Assembling an emergency kit that prioritizes both safety and comfort will bring peace of mind should the power go out. Start with a large bucket or cooler, and add essentials like bottled water and non-perishable food to last at least three days. Include flashlights, extra batteries and a battery-powered radio for staying informed during extended power outages.

Should you be stranded on the couch or on the road, be sure to treat your car the same way as your home by keeping a fully stocked first aid kit and having blankets, gloves, and portable hand warmers at the ready. Car jumper cables, tire inflators and roadside assistance information should also be close at hand.

Bring On The Warmth

It’s official: the indulgently creamy shade of Mocha Mousse is about to dominate your designs now that global color authority Pantone has named it the Color of the Year for 2025.

Each year, the Pantone Color Institute assembles a panel of color experts who scour the world looking for influences ranging from design to new technology to travel aspirations and everything in between. This year, experts quickly noted an overarching trend toward nourishing the senses and more closely aligning with nature. Mocha Mousse — or PANTONE 17-1230 — is the perfect bridge between those two inspirations. It is a warming, rich shade that effectively appeals to our yearning for comfort in a harmonious and sophisticated way.

“Underpinned by our desire for everyday pleasures, Mocha Mousse expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone Color Institute Executive Director. “Sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic, Mocha Mousse extends our perceptions of the browns from being humble and grounded to embrace aspirational and luxe.”

When it comes to interiors, Mocha Mousse is a shade that’s easy to infuse throughout your home. Whether it's painted on a wall, used for fabric on a sofa or subtly incorporated through accessories like throw pillows or a coffee table tray, this color envelops a room with warmth and earthy elegance. Plus because of its neutral tone, it’s the perfect complement to a wide range of color palettes.

Look for Pantone design collaborations with midcentury modern furniture maker Joybird, which features the color on over 300 items, including sofas, sectionals, sleeper sofas, upholstered bed frames, accent chairs, ottomans, pillows and slipcovers. Pantone has also collaborated with wallpaper producer Spoonflower to create an exclusive range of print-ondemand wallpaper, fabric and home decor doused in the luxurious brown shade.

“It [creates] a room you want to be in,” Pantone Color Institute vice president Laurie Pressman told “Architectural Digest.” “People will say, ‘I love coming to your home. It feels so warm and welcoming.’ That’s the ultimate compliment, right?"

Spirited Away

The Age Of Zero-Proof Craft Cocktails Has Arrived

The beginning of the year always feels like an appropriate time to bring out the adage, “Out with the old and in with the new.” This year, that 100% goes for outdated ideas about what it means to drink a nonalcoholic cocktail.

In years past, opting for something zero-proof usually meant an O’Douls or a club soda with lime along with a boring story no one wanted to hear about how you’re driving home or have a big day tomorrow. Luckily, those days are long behind us. Mindful drinking or abstaining entirely has become a badge of honor. In fact, it has become so popular that in 2024, nearly 25% of American adults claim to have participated in Dry January, according to a Civic Science study.

It’s no wonder that the low and no-alcohol beverage sector has exploded in the last few years, with the worldwide market now worth over $13 billion. Companies like Lyre’s, Ritual and Seedlip have worked tirelessly with experts to craft alternatives or all-new botanical creations that can mimic the mouthfeel and flavor profile of alcohol — all of which can be easily found at your local grocery or liquor store.

Restaurants around town are following the trend, stepping up their alcohol-free game with flavorful libations you might even like better than the originals — especially the next morning. Ushered along with the recent renaissance of craft cocktails, master mixologists have been putting these flavorful new alcohol alternatives to good use. We’ve rounded up some of the most stellar takes on your old favorites, as well as some all-new flavorful concoctions you won’t want to miss.

No-Fashioned

NO-GROSNI SBAGLIATO — Muchacho

If an effervescent Negroni Sbagliato is your style, Muchacho’s No-Grosni Sbagliato, a tangy and slightly bitter mix of Lyre’s Italian Orange, Lyre’s Rosso, nonalcoholic sparkling wine and a dash of rose water is unquestionably the way to go.

For a zesty and vibrant margarita alternative, they work their well-known margarita magic with the Mock-a-Rita, which blends hibiscus-infused Lyre’s Agave with lime and a touch of agave sweetness. The No-Fashioned is a soon-to-be classic with Lyre’s American Malt combined with Chica Morada and a hint of orange.

TROPIC THUNDER — Moxies

Moxies’ must-try nonalcoholic cocktail, Tropic Thunder, features a tangy botanical blend of passion fruit, lemon juice and Seedlip Garden 108, which is a distilled alcohol free spirit with subtle hints of rosemary, spearmint, thyme and hops. The chili lime rim adds a zesty kick that will send your taste buds soaring. They also have a beautifully herbal Rosemary Grapefruit Tonic, combining fresh rosemary with grapefruit juice and pineapple, topped off with cold tea and the invigorating fizz of Fever-Tree ginger beer.

THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS —

The Curve Lounge

Much like the film starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, The Pineapple Express is an energetic blend of CBD soda and pineapple juice, enhanced with a splash of lime and a hint of grenadine that will put you in a zen state.

The Chico Berry is also highly recommended with a blend of Lyre’s Agave nonalcoholic spirit mixed with strawberry puree, carbonated Topo Chico, a squeeze of lemon and a touch of mint, creating a revitalizing and fragrant experience.

THE BERRY PATCH — Truluck’s

The Berry Patch combines muddled strawberries, almond rosewater syrup and coconut soda, resulting in an “I-need-another-sip” effect. “[It] goes great with crab, particularly King Crab, as the brininess plays a delicious counterpoint to the refreshing fruitiness of the drink,” Truluck's Beverage Director Dave Mattern says. You also won’t want to miss the Blackberry Bramble, a nod to their fan-favorite Spicy Blackberry Margarita. The spicy hint of habanero syrup is guaranteed to delight. If an island vacation is more your style, the Hibiscus Fresca is the way to go.

POMPELMO HARVEST SPARKLER

MOCKTAIL — The Henley

Grapefruit lovers rejoice. The Henley has created a mouthwatering blend that will tingle your taste buds. The Pompelmo Harvest Sparkler

Mocktail is a refreshing mix of grapefruit puree with San Pellegrino Pompelmo and a Tajin rim. For a sweeter option, try the Strawberry Mocktail, with fresh strawberries, honey, Fever Tree club soda, fresh lime and mint.

THE ESPRESSO NOT-TINI — Volstead

Fans of extending a good night out and the buzz a good espresso martini can bring can’t get enough of Volstead’s Espresso Not-tini, featuring rich espresso mingled with demerara sugar and sweet cream cold foam, elegantly garnished with espresso beans for that perfect touch. If a caffeine jolt past noon isn’t for you, Southlake’s first speakeasy has other must-try options like an NA version of their popular Strawberry Mule, made from fresh strawberries, lemon, simple sugar and ginger beer. The Spicy Cucumber Spritzer, offering a unique blend of lime, agave, cucumber and a hint of serrano, all topped with sparkling water for a crisp finish is also a huge hit.

Sweet Paris Cafe Perfects

Parisian Cuisine

From the many soft, thin layers stacked atop one anoth er to the diverse selection of sweet and savory toppings, crepes are a French staple that is as beloved as they are exquisite. Thankfully, one doesn’t need to fly to Europe to enjoy these sensational delights. Instead, Paris comes to Southlake with the opening of the brand-new Sweet Paris Creperie & Cafe.

First opening in Houston in 2012, Sweet Paris has perfected the art of eating crepes with over 30 varieties on its menu. While the rapidly growing franchise has 18 cafes and counting across three states, the Southlake lo cation represents its first foray into the DFW Metroplex.

“We’re excited to see Sweet Paris grow,” CEO and cofounder Allison Chavez says. “Southlake Town Square is the optimal location for our entrance into the market with its vibrant shops and upscale boutiques.”

Locally owned and operated by the Hymes family, Sweet Paris is located in the space that formerly housed Rockfish Seafood Grill and has been transformed into a bright and lively Parisian bistro with cozy seating, am bient lighting and a spacious patio perfect for brunch dates and outdoor gatherings. With a multifaceted background in running their own restaurant and cater ing business, Edward and Cynthia Hymes are more than ready to introduce Sweet Paris to Southlake.

Those who show up early can indulge in the cafe’s breakfast crepes, which are filled with everything from scrambled eggs and smoked salmon to feta-ricotta and bechamel sauce. For lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers even more extravagant options, whether it be chicken alfredo, Philly cheesesteak, ham and gruyère or truffled caprese. Of course, the sweet selections never fail, especially when they involve decadent offerings such as dulce de leche, cookie butter, lemon and sugar or apple cinnamon creme brulee.

Between its relaxing atmosphere, gorgeous patio, re freshing cocktails and delicious bites that diners love to sink their forks into, it’s no wonder why Sweet Paris is the new talk of the town.

“We started out as customers of Sweet Paris and have frequented many of its Texas locations,” owner Edward Hymes says. “We are excited to continue our love for Sweet Paris as strategic partners, building on its legacy in Texas while at the same time creating our own family legacy.”

Where Sushi Is An Art Form

DFW’s First Michelin Star Goes To Tatsu

The Michelin Guide, long the gold standard of fine dining, has finally made its way to Texas. Though DFW now boasts 27 “Bib Gourmand” and “Recommended” restaurants, only one has earned a coveted Michelin Star. Ladies and gentlemen, allow us to introduce you to Tatsu.

At Tatsu, an unassuming 10-seat omakase bar burrowed inside a quiet corner of Deep Ellum’s Continental Gin Building, the focus is exactly where it should be — on the food.

This intimate culinary gem is renowned for its focus on Edomae-style sushi. This technique has roots in street food from early 1800s Tokyo and sticks to traditional methods like preserving fish in soy or vinegar. The quality and freshness of the ingredients are paramount, with one solo ingredient meant to shine.

Amidst the traditional, almost tranquil setting, executive chef and owner Tatsuya Sekiguchi works his artistry on meticulously sourced seasonal ingredients. Every detail, from the flown-in fresh catch down to the sublimely pickled ginger, is choreographed to perfection.

“Omakase” translates to "I leave it up to you.” If there is one place where you can truly entrust your taste buds to the chef, it’s Tatsu. During the hour and 45-minute dinner service, diners can expect a carefully curated chef’s menu, including one or two appetizers, 13-15 pieces of nigiri-style sushi, a hand roll, miso soup and dessert. For those with room to spare, rotating à la carte pieces are available after the dinner service.

Chef Tatsu is a fourth-generation sushi chef from Hasuda, Japan. He is now the first in his family — and the first from his hometown — to receive a Michelin Star.

"Receiving this Michelin Star is surreal and a dream come true," says Chef Tatsu. "This honor provides me with the opportunity to serve, teach and mentor the next generation of chefs."

With limited seating and only two fixed dining times at 5:30 and 7:45 five days a week, Tatsu has been one of Dallas’ most notoriously hard-to-come-by reservations since it opened in 2022. For those fortunate enough to get a spot, it’s well worth the wait.

Southlake Strongman Talks Training

When it comes to personal trainers, Champion’s Club has no shortage of exceptional fitness professionals who know how to help their clients succeed. While they all bring their own unique style and personality to their workouts, there’s no doubt Bradford Hall’s presence is the biggest of them all. Weighing in at a statuesque 275 pounds, this former Dragon football star turned powerlifting pro is always testing his limits. With 25 years of weightlifting experience and dual degrees in kinesiology and nursing, Bradford’s passion for strength training shows that working out should be enjoyable no matter where you are in your fitness journey.

I’VE BEEN IN SOUTHLAKE EVER SINCE… kindergarten. I grew up in the school system and started playing football in seventh grade. By my sophomore year, I began as a linebacker for the B team before moving up to varsity on the kickoff team the next year. By my senior year, I started as a nose guard under Todd Dodge, and we won the state championship in 2002.

I REUNITED WITH MY TEAM DURING THE… 2021 induction ceremony into the Carroll Athletic Hall of Honor. Reconnecting with my teammates 22 years later, it was amazing to see everything that happened and all of the ways we’ve changed since then.

AFTER GRADUATING FROM CARROLL, I… immersed myself with strength sports, including powerlifting, Olympic weightlifting and strongman competitions. For me, it’s never just about being strong — it’s about the journey. From the weights I’ve lifted to the challenges I’ve tackled, each moment has taught me the value of persistence and the rewards of hard work.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE COMPETITION MEMORIES HAPPENED... early in my career. I was at the APF Texas Cup, and I was getting ready to squat 800 pounds. As I unranked the bar, the weight shifted and I fell forward. The refs came up to me and were asking ‘What do you want to do?’ I responded, ‘Do I have one more attempt?’ The whole crowd was cheering after I went to finish my set.

WHEN DISCUSSING GOALS WITH CLIENTS… I try to really listen so I can understand what they need from me. What you have in mind for the client isn’t always what’s right for the client – you really have to look at them holistically to see what training regimen is going to work for them. An 8-year-old’s needs are going to look different from an 80-yearold’s needs. It all comes down to communication.

ONE THING I LEARNED THROUGH BODYBUILDING WAS… how to eat. It’s basically 50/50 between nutrition and training. I always encourage my clients to minimize refined sugars, processed foods, dairy and wheat. It’s not just about lifting weights — it’s about creating a sustainable foundation for long-term health and fitness.

MY APPROACH TO FITNESS COACHING IS… ‘Stimulate, don’t annihilate.’ The goal isn’t to push past limits recklessly — it’s to train smart and maximize results without overdoing it. If you can’t perform five to eight reps with good form, your weight is too heavy. Progress doesn’t always require heavy loads — consistency and technique matter more than people think.

WHAT REALLY RUINS EXERCISE IS WHEN YOU… compare yourself to others or dwell on your self-image or performance. Fitness is a personal journey, and everyone is at a different stage. I always remind my clients to focus on the present and where they want to go. That mindset is key to real growth and lasting success.

ONE PHRASE THAT’S ALWAYS STUCK WITH ME IS… ‘It’s not the size of the dog in the fight — it’s the size of the fight in the dog.’ This lesson has stayed with me not just in sports, but in life. Whether it’s injuries, adversity or setbacks, we all face challenges that test us. The key is picking yourself up, focusing on what you can control and moving forward.

WHAT MOTIVATES ME MOST IS… seeing my clients’ growth. Whether it’s losing 20 pounds, hitting a new personal record, resolving pain through targeted interventions, or simply going on more walks, those little improvements add up. Watching someone progress knowing I had a part in helping them makes all the effort worthwhile. Photo by Toby Fournet Photography

A Mark Of Infinite Hope

Celebrate And Commemorate The 43rd Annual MLK Day Parade

Dr . Martin Luther King Jr. propelled the fight for racial equality in the 20th century, and today, his legacy continues with a lifelong commitment to justice for all. The city of Dallas is honoring and celebrating the extraordinary life of MLK Jr. as a beacon of hope and change through the 43rd annual MLK Day Parade.

Featuring approximately 250 entrants from various community organizations, church groups and nonprofits, this year’s parade will liven the streets of Downtown Dallas with marching bands, drill teams, colorful floats, performers, food trucks and much more. Presented by Hope Encourage Love Protect (H.E.L.P.), the MLK Day Parade is a testament to the power of community. It is one of many events occurring during the 2025 MLK Celebration Week, which also includes a day of reflection, candle lighting cer -

emony, equity indicators symposium, an MLK Fest and a scholarship and awards gala.

This family-friendly event encourages participants to give back to H.E.L.P. and The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. There’s a reason why Osaka has earned the nickname of Japan’s kitchen. With a rich culinary scene that exemplifies the mantra “kuidaore,” or “eat until you drop,” it’s no wonder why this bustling city is at the top of assistant editor David Dunn’s travel list. With street vendors sizzling up delicacies like Takoyaki grilled octopus, Okonomiyaki savory pancakes and deep-fried Kushikatsu, there’s more than enough to satiate your appetite and curiosity at the Dotonbori district.
