Synthesised Practical The practical element has been developed from the elements which were most common when researching the theoretical side of this module. It is clear that the early stages of album cover design seemed to be the most enjoyable period of time for both designers and consumers of music, in the 60’s and 70’s much of your peer status would have been determined on the vastness of your record collection. People enjoyed having large physical pieces of artwork which accompanied their music, it was another element for a fan to relate to as well as another format to band promotion. This sense of ownership and pride of physical items in relation to the music industry is slowly disappearing with the progression of downloading and file sharing. Therefore this practical element is a collection of my suggestions on how we can keep the album cover physical, so we can keep on enjoying the art work that accompanies the music we purchase.

There has become such a strong bond between visuals and music since the development of recorded music and it would be beneficial to both consumers and designers if their was still formats of design that can be bought, held and cherished.

12 CD Case
What is it for? Having gathered many designers and authors opinions on the future of the designers role in the music industry, there seems to be an agreement that most forms of design are heading towards digital formats, which in the opinions of Aubrey Powell, Dan Mumford and Rich Lock is a negative aspect. This CD packaging was developed through the concept of taking the elements that both designers and consumers enjoyed about the 12“ Vinyl (the size of the art work, the physicality of the packaging, feeling like you own and are proud of your music collection) and aimed to apply these to a more modern music listening format.

Keeping Design in Music Physical
Alternates to the Album Cover As downloading and file sharing takes main place in purchasing your music, it results in you spending the same amount of money for an album of MP3’s as yu would buying an actual physical album. However, you have nothing to admire, touch or study as you would have done with a vinyl cover or even a CD case. It is a worry that in the future, design for music will become purely screen based, especially when considering album covers. These Ipod and Ipad cover alternatives could be used to replace the album cover, instead of you purchasing MP3’s online and recieving no physical product, then this could be replaced by cover art for your touch screen tablets or smart phones as the covers are interchangeable and necersarry for the protection of the harware so could be swapped for another album design whenever they purchase a new album. This concept is aimed to keep a physical element to design in music as the digital age starts to take over as well as bring back the elements that people enjoy about recieving a piece of design with their music which in turn would also be useful and a format that is large enough to actually be able to see the piece of design
