SECTION ONE DESIGNERS In this section i will be highlighting a few designers that have given me inspiration over my three years at LCA.

5

Bianca Chang. Bianca Change is a designer . artist from Melbourne Australia who specialises in paper manipulation. She has a brilliantly unique way of forming shape and pattern through accurately cutting and manipulating stacks of paper to result in visually impressive 3D outcomes..

6

7

Claudio Reston. Claudio Reston is a graphic designer from Rio Brazil. He uses his skills as an illustrator and hand rendered typographer to create inspired promotional materials on small and large scales. His visual style and textured designs have been a consistent form of inspiration.

8

9

Helmo. Helmo is a French Designer who is very visually orientated and loves to use photography and typography for a basis of many of his designs. Helmo’s creative freedom has helped me realise that there are endless options to take when considering the visual out come of a piece of design and not everything has to be vector based. 10

11

Stefan Sagmeister. Sagmeister was one of the first designers I was introduced to. Even though he is hugely famous in the graphic design world I still use his positive and inspirational approach to design as a basis for my design and concept approach.

hands-on approaches when considering what direction a brief could go.

The fact that Sagmeister closes his studio for a year (every few years) to allow himself and his team to experiment with different production and image making His perception of techniques, shows experimentation and pushing the boundaries that he still is trying to of design has helped think outside the box in open my mind to more relation to design. 12

13

Wang Zhi Hong. An award winning designer from Taiwan has used his experience in the design field to home his preferred style. He spends a lot of his time designing for editorial and publication but has a beautiful style of using type, space and photography as a main foundation for his designs. The photography and type 14

layout he produces is beautiful and the Oriental style of visuals he produces are hugely inspiring.

SECTION TWOSTUDIOS In this section I will be highlighting a few studios that have given me inspiration over my three years at LCA.

17

Disturbance. A small independent studio formed by brother and sister Richard and Susie Hart. They have a broad sense of style when it comes to design, many of their design outcomes are produced in different visual styles, so their portfolio seems quite versatile. They also use a combination of 18

photography and illustration in their work which is the area I respect the most

19

Ditto Press. Ditto Press are not purely a design studio, they are a print press that produce vibrant and interesting printed deliverables. They mostly print for other designers but their outlook on the design process especially in the production stage is really impressive. They always result in both a high quality and original finish to the publications or printed 20

materials they produce for either themselves or their clients. They also often have quite a comical / educational approach to their personal work, which is another area that I respect.

21

Dr. Me. I was not aware of Dr. Me until the beginning of this final year, but when they came in to do the flag creation master class I was hugely inspired by their light hearted and fun approach to design. Everything they produce, they enjoy and specifically direct briefs into areas that they know they love or try experimenting with new processes if they 22

feel that this would be suitable. Their message ‘graphic design should be fun’ really helped update my outlook on how I work and the areas I enjoy when it comes to design.

23

Kolektiv. Kolektiv, based in Prague and formed by LukĂĄĹĄ Kijonka and Michal Krul. They are an interdisciplinary studio that focus a lot on editorial and publication design, They often use a mixture of photography, type and colour in their visual responses and this again if done well is a combination of my favourite areas of design. 24

SECTION THREEPHOTOGRAPHERS In this section I will be highlighting a few photographers that have given me inspiration over my three years at LCA. Photography is an area that I really enjoy to utilise both for the design process and presentation of work.

27

Aubrey Powell. Aubrey Powell is the Photographic side of the 1960’s/70’s design studio Hipgnosis. Powell and Storm Thorgerson were the foundation for a huge amount of iconic album covers and were pioneers in the design industry especially when it comes to design in music. Aubrey Powell used his photography to create original and ground 28

breaking album art and many of the photos that were used in Pink Floyd’s and Led Zeppelins album covers are now known as some of the most iconic images in the design world.

29

Mitchell Kanashkevich. is inspired and he always seems to capture the emotion and feel of a scene and this ultimately creates His aim is to document beautiful images that ‘disappearing ancient can be analysed in cultures and the human more than just pretty piece of photography. condition in unique, challenging situations.’ Mitchell Kanashkevich is a world travelling, travel/documentary photographer.

I love his portfolio, for both design and personal reasons, His use of colour and light in his photography 30

31

Raghubir Singh. Raghubir Singh was one of the pioneers in colour photography in Asia, he was one of the first to experiment with the contrast of colour in his photography and the Indian setting of his photographs create beautiful contrasts of bright vibrant colours and 2rd world desert environments. When I have used photography I have tried to take inspiration 32

from Singh’s unique take on colour contrast, light and motion.

33

Robert Capa. World war photography is by far one of my favoured eras for photography, not just for the historical interest but also because of the visual documentation. Robert Capa is one of my most favourite photographers from that time, he captured some of the most iconic images of WW2 and has managed to capture the feeling of tragedy, chaos and fear 34

that would have been felt by most soldiers throughout this campaign. The use of old Cameras witch grainy black and white film adds to this beauty but the composition, and use of space and light really help each image to create a focus and tell a story.

35

W. Eugene Smith. W.Eugene Smith is another famous WW2 photographer. He not only was responsible for some hugely iconic photos (like the raising of the American flag on Iwo jima) but also helped document the effect on civilian life during WW2 and after. He uses shock factor in many of his images which ultimately help each photograph tell a story whether positive 36

or negative. This kind of documentative photography is fascinating as it proves that a single image can be studied and respected as long as its content captures the emotion of the scene..
