P.1 BREAKING BARRIERS My project trajectory will be anchored in the idea that the public space will be A Center of Public Discourse on higher education and its accessibility. Education continues to grow more expensive, while incomes are not rising to meet the demand. At the same time, higher education is becoming increasingly imperative to acquiring and maintaining jobs. My project looked into these correlations and the dialect that could take place there. My intention is to create a space that will allow for a discussion on this topic, including meaningful and collaborative interaction. interaction. This will include exhibition space, community space, and collaborative space. The primary design aspects I will utilize include barrier-like materials, to represent the struggle and correlation materials between getting education and/or a job. I also plan to use many interactive elements, elements including the the objects I chose - books, digital screens, and stairs.

P.2 FLOW Flow is a collaborative work space intended for a technological developement company. The program for the space is specifically tailored for this company, complete with open working spaces and shared amenities. The overall design is intended to create chance encounters fostering collaboration through an emphasis on circulation and a playful and colorful interior. interior The basis of this intention comes through research. The firm Haworth conducted research on working spaces with the following findings: “Innovation in business often occurs through informal interactions and therefore it is necessary to ensure that workplace design accommodates and facilitates such dynamic interactions.” It later goes on to say: “Creating moments interactions for interaction among employees boosts productivty and morale...” This research influenced the overall design; an morale attempt to form a unique and interactive workplace. workplace

P.3 STUDY ABROAD Over the summer, I was selected to study abroad in Barcelona with a group of students from the College of Architecture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The classes heavily emphasized sketching, sketching as we took in the many architectural and interior wonders that Europe has to offer. Sketching is an extremely important part of my design process, as I first put my ideas to paper before attempting anything digital. We also explored various methods of model making and artistically journaling, including water color and collaging. As we sketched, we were able to attempt different styles throughout the four week long trip. This guided me towards finding my own personal sketching style. It also helped me to closer analyze the buildings themselves and their characteristics. I believe that being able to communicate ideas quickly and efficiently via paper is an important skill, skill and I am thankful that I was able to develop mine more in depth through this experience.

P.4 THINKING OUTSIDE The intention behind this project is to design an atmosphere intervention that will cause the user to be less aware of themselves and connect to something outside of themselves, themselves as research shows millennials are typically focused on themselves. A prominent reason for this is due to technology and social media, therefore I used these mediums to do the opposite. The design strategies that I used include three zones that portray different forms of light in order to make the user aware of their surroundings and less aware of themselves. The first zone is the courtyard, where the user will be aware of the natural light. The second zone is the entrance to the building, which includes a feature wall allowing light in from outside. The last zone includes the main light feature, which is a series of balls that hold lights and are interactive with the user, using technology to direct the user’s focus outside of themselves. themselves

P.5 HERE Here is a Behavioral Health Center for teenagers with mental health issues. Extensive research into North Carolina showed that only one in every five adolescents will seek help for behavioral health problems, such as depression and anxiety. Knowing this, my design aims to provide a mental health center that would attract and maintain adolescent patients. My intentions were to offer long term growth and support for behavioral health, destigmatize seeking care for mental health adolescents, and provide patients with available help and assistance at all hours. The program of the center provides a variety of spaces for the patients to socialize and hang out, including an open group area, a game room, and a screen space. Specific design interventions, including color and biophilia, form an inviting and comfortable atmosphere for adolescents based on research.
